My Fastest 100 miles Ultra Running - Aravaipa Running's Jackpot Ultra Marathon

  • Jackpot Ultra Marathon was the perfect setting to run my fastest 100 miles Ultra Marathon - but can I do it? Aravaipa Running holds annually in Las Vegas this 100 miles ultra marathon which is also the 100 miles USATF championship.
    Curious about the trail running gear I use and recommend: check out this link
    linktr.ee/runn...
    The race consists of small loops around a park. About 3/4 of the course is paved, the rest is non-technical packed dirt/gravel. There is slight elevation gain every loop that will creep on you, but nothing major. And the weather tends to be mild.
    I'm not a fast runner - I race for fun and I'm perfectly happy just finishing a 100 miles. But as I'm preparing for the big challenge of my running season - Cocodona 250 - I wanted a special challenge. I wanted to test my speed. And importantly, I wanted to test that speed on tired leg. And only 1 week before, Nora and I were running Black Canyon 100k. So this race wasn't exactly the perfect set up to run my fastest 100 miles ultra marathon...but in ultra running, you have to do with what you have!
    Next for me is Antelope Canyon 100 miles - March 8. I'm also doing the Goggins Challenge 4x4x48 on Feb 29/March 1.
    As always, thanks for watching!

    I'm a 72 year old ultra runner who does mostly looped races, so I really enjoyed watching this video. I appreciate your unique sense of humor . Keep the videos coming. That's quite a series of runs you have planned, thank you for taking us along.

    Awesome job Simon!! I was watching Aravaipa's live coverage from the desk top and saw you dancing with Elvis and started laughing! But when I first saw you, I said out loud: "yeah, Simon is there"! Again, awesome job brother! Skal!

      Thanks!! I don't even know why I did it again... I think honestly it was to have variety on the channel, but I miss the mountains! UTE will be much more fun.

      Thanks! I think it was a good run but really, it’s 3rd only because of who was racing. And the best runners were the day before. Still, very proud of my little trophy which is now sitting in my studio :)

      Thanks! Gonna slow down eventually, but for now I'm having a blast. Just by going a little slower than I could, it makes it much more "sustainable"

    Thanks so much. I was there racing and cheered you on when I saw you. Met Nora a couple of times. She is AWESOME! You and I had talked back and forth in the comments on another video (I forget which one) about doing this race. I signed up and finished my first 100 miler!!! It took about 38 hours (I think). I've already signed up for my next one. Another short loop course. Thank you for all your videos and inspiration. YOU ROCK

      Oh yeah! If you are who I think you are - way to go on keep pushing! I partly wanted to finally wrap up my "mental toughness' video because of that. Just pure grit - it was really impressive to keep going when things just aren't going smoothly! Awesome and congrats!

    Oh congratulations that race looks like a little bit of mind control. It’s almost like running those kinda like I’m doing a 24 hour race this year I know 5K course but least that’s in the woods with some elevation. This is something else. Congratulations I think that’ll tune your mind for your 250.

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  6 месяцев назад +1

      It gets very mental very quickly! There's nothing (except dogs...) to distract you from the pain. And the pain is there, especially that I was pushing that pace! Honestly not a big fan, but it was nice to switch it up and have some variety on the channel! Good luck at your 24! That's also very tough - I prefer having a fixed distance myself as it creates an incentive to push towards the end (aka "the faster I run, the sooner I'm done, and the sooner I can be in bed").

    Incredible amount of totes for a race with one aid station!

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  6 месяцев назад

      What's totes? Trophy? If so, yeah it's kind of intense because there are soooo many distance and fixed time races. Which makes it weird - on a small loop like that you'd think you can keep track that you're ~3rd, but I had no clue (and since display was broken for 100 milers, that was quite shocking to me, ... I thought I was 5-6)
