- Ed Coan is considered the world's greatest powerlifter of all time. In this video we will see him pull 750 lbs / 340 kg in a conventional and faint! After after the deadlift hes gonna do some lower and upper back traningen.
In the 80s and 90s as well as the 00s he won all but one of competitions he entered. In 1991 at the USA nationals he deadiftet 901 lbs / 409 kg RAW with a stifbar and a 2 h weigh in. Today almost 30 years later no one has beaten that. Ed was also tested positive for three times in the IPF. All those were at world championships. The first time was in 1985, in the USA and his home town. Second time was in 1989 in Canada. And the last time before he was bnd from the IPF was 1996 in Austria.
This is footage from Video power magazine.
Backs a little injured, I’m just gonna deadlift up to 750, do some bent over rows, and rep out a few sets of pull-ups 😂
20 years later he was at mark bells gym pulling 600 like a sack of groceries
And so injured can't even brace fully...

Stay natural buddy!
Those are 2 different sessions edited together. He must have stopped at around 300 in the first video.
1 set of pull-ups
Thank you for this. Just amazing
Sure wish Louie SImmons could've seen this video and applied it to his westside techniques, deadlift + westide = sucky deadlift
The deadlift just isn't that important to multi ply
Can you name a single gym that has produced more 800 pound deadlifters than Westside barbell?
@@davidmb3376 --MetroFlex
@@TVTruther which Metroflex and how many 800 pound deadlifters have trained there, under what coach, and using what program?
@@davidmb3376 --I recall a interview with Louie years ago saying how his club lacks at deadlifts.. so how many are you saying are 800 and up pullers at his westside?
No wonder his back was bothering him with all those fucking reverse hypers! lol
Reverse hypers actually make your lower back feel a lot better, when the weight comes down it decompresses the discs while pumping blood into the low back. That's why he (and many others including yours truly) warm up with them prior to squatting or deadlifting.
@@Chris88895 I don't see a problem using light weight on the reverse hyper, but when the weight gets heavy, it can over stretch the ligaments in the lumbar spine. Ask Mark Ripetoe about the reverse hyper. He got rid of all his reverse hypers years ago because too many people were complaining that it gave them lower back pain!
Additionally, the reverse hyper is a very poor glute and hamstring exercise the way it's normally performed.
@@totallyraw1313 I don't think it's the exercise itself or even the intensity, people have some really atrocious form with it. Most people just swing the weight up, they "hyper extend" at the top of the movement (which is a big no no for the low back) and then it screws them up. Doing it properly and not swinging ensures that the weight is reasonable and it makes hyper extending nearly impossible. Also, contracting the abs/glutes at the top always makes me feel it big time throughout my glutes/hamstrings.
@@Chris88895 Agree. I actually do the exercise using single leg at a time with heavy ankle weights and pause at the top for 2 sec. This is a better way to do it imo.
@@totallyraw1313 The only thing I would ask Mark Rippetoe about is how to bench a measly 396# while taking anabolic steroids.
One major takeaway for me is how meticulous and purposeful he is pulling 135 lbs.
Also miss that vertical leg press machine behind him.
Every rep should be the same for practice, it's like honing a skill. Also it helps with a warmup when you get heavier your form is in the groove

When I started lifting a guy told me to always deadlift like it's my first time doing it and I think that's good advice
That looked like it. I believe him
This Gym is from 1995--that's 25-years-old--and it's more well equipped that today's Gyms!
You should find another gym homie
I trained there when I visited Chicago a few years ago. It's great. A great classic 80's feel.
I was thinking the same thing.
Today’s gyms equipment is complete shit all gyms are today is people sitting on there phones

Ed coan: My back's been bothering me
Pulls 750
This dude was decades ahead of everyone , before people knew about lifting. He's right about the massages too.
The beginning with Ed just petting the tiger and feeding the monkey is so damn random but great. Thanks for posting, awesome video!
Amazing to see a guy that massive able to do pullups for reps
The row platform should be more common.
He's literally like a small ball of straight muscle. Holy shit
I love it that he didn’t even put his lifting shoes on until he got to 435.
the fucking absolute density of the man. yes the size but the density of muscle is off the chart.
I literally worshiped this guy back in the early and mid 90's. Double kudos for having Somewhere in Time playing in the background!
Entire album. No Spotify bullshitplaylist 👍
Zeek Banistor I pray to Ed Coan every night before I go to bed.

Love Iron Maiden in the background
Sounds like wasted years but im totally guessing
Jeremy E Correct album, the song I heard was ,”Stranger in a Strange Land”
@@TheCimmerian6 im sure youre right. That album definitely has a distinctive sound!
Please, can you tell me what is name of song at 5:45?
@@petarstoisavljevic4230 If you're still looking for it, it's Alexander The Great from the album "Somewhere in Time" - my favourite Maiden album by far.
At 1:20 in, does he say ‘Gotta warm up the back up every way I can right now when it’s hurt’? And he still pulls this much weight. What a beast. The 🐐 🙏🏾
POOR PIRANO he was warming up with it? And rows don’t matter lol they aren’t a way to show strength

He sounds nothing like he does now. I know he’s a lot younger but still.
Thanks for posting all the old videos. Had a weekend seminar with Coan a few years ago (along with Efferding and Poliquin) and I've never met anyone better at explaining training and technique than him. Btw his name is spelt wrong in the title, don't know if that hinders people from seeing the video when searching his name :)
Love the Maiden playing in the background!!!
Why’d he change his shorts; poop story??
He was so strong becouse in his gym they played iron maiden
Another wacko friend of joe exotic?
John Tetzler No Coan is a sweetheart
Ed Coan, tiger king
Hej Josef! Tack för att du laddar upp sådana här videos, det är gött o få se hur det var på den tiden också // en 16 åring som brinner för styrkelyft
Ed + iron maiden = the GOAT
Ed Coan + Iron Maiden = Iron Coan
Perhaps his untold training secret was working out to Somewhere in Time!
And it only took over 30 years but Iron Maiden is playing Alexander the Great live!
Time for me to go deadlift …
0:02 does he say"I think he wanna see Kirk Karowski"?
i think so
I heard he eats Kirk Karwoski :)
anonymous 275*
375 is close to Brian shaw/haphthor weight....if he was that ripped at that weight he’d be the next evolution in humanity haha
Is there anything more 1995 than wearing American flag parachute pants and posing with a Tiger?
Upload Ed Coan bench press workout.
search ed coan supertraining. he does a ton of vids with the bells n co, dated around 2015 or 16. "journey of the greatest etc." he does a bench workout, plus alot of old footage.
He looks like a beefed-up Tom Hanks
I just noticed on the DL, at least in the recording, it doesn't sound like he's dropping the weight really hard.
That gym looks dope not many like that anymore
Thats animal abuse
I saw him compete in 1996 at the USPF worlds in Philly, dude was a world class power lifter.
Just casually passes out
750 lb conventional and with a bad back.
One of the greatest of all time... I miss those competition days
john haack looks like his son. HAHAHA
Somebody sound the lunk alarm 🚨 🚨 🚨
is that alexander the great from iron maiden playing in the background lmao
Iron Maiden in the background. \m/
Hans startposition såg rätt shit ut men vad vet jag
lmo when he said Calumet City, Illinois. He's the only white person there. Cal City wasn't even as ghetto back then but he's still shining.
So music in the gym were better back then.
That's the best high when you almost pass out from a deadlift
750 DL with a injury…incredible!!!
Real gym, real music!
I wish they played Maiden in my gym.
I feel sorry for the monkeys inside this stone cells.
He trained like a BB with no ego n applied intelligence
why the lifetime ban in ipf Ed?
Why the animals? I like this guy.
What was that first machine he used??? Looked very similar to a reverse hyper, I wasn’t aware of them being around back then?!?
Yeah I believe they came out late 80s/early 90s
Westside
reverse hyper machine patented by louie simmons
@Bob Rocks I stand corrected good sir
Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time
Dude was big!
Iron Maiden 😎🤟
Thats sick, Powerlifter doing pullups like its bodyweight master
Damn, he was jacked here.
So that's what Sam did to keep busy after Frodo left Middle-earth, heavy deadlifts and rows
Those Quads Gym tshirts are aesthetic as fuck
I'd buy one right now if I could
Who are the 9 wierdos that disliked this
David Atreides tIgEr KinG
Was he natural or steroids?
Dude please.
While iron maiden blasts in the background. What a great time to be alive.
The real Tiger King
Hes looking like John Haack but younger.
Anybody notice the short change at 2:34 ?
I saw red to blue but the same song was playing I'm pretty certain.
Actually I think he's wearing shorts on top of a one piece. 😂
Shoe change too when it got heavy
THE WEIGHT SHOWN ON SCREEN SEEMS 20LBS MORE THAN WHAT I SEE ON THE BAR - or is this a heavier bar ?
Some plates can be 55lb each instead of 45lb
First plate is 100lbs
Lol, guy passes out and on to the next exercise.
Stranger in a strangeland solot börjar ju vid 4.40....
Ed changed shorts did he crap in the red ones??
He changed his clothes in between sets @ 2:36???
Ed Coan is the best. Go Brother Rice!

Young ed coan 💪

Awesome info and insight
🏋🏽♀️🔥
Using the reverse hyperextention.!!!!!
👍
🏋️👍
4:45 not sure what that is called but when I do that half the time I faint afterwards
They're barbell rows, you should to chest supported rows instead of these if they make you pass out bud
Breathing during rows can be tricky. You need to sneak a new breath in between reps and keep your core and lower back tight during the pull. Passing out is usually caused by not enough oxygen to the brain . Hope this helps
They’re barbell rows.
Try a pendalay row if you struggle with them.
Can we talk about how jacked Ed was? Impressive.
imagine if he did sumo? omg
He did used to pull sumo before an injury. Has pulled 920 sumo in training.
Imagine if he took steroids AND did sumo
@@nunyabizness690 he did take it tho
Horrible seeing those animals locked up
You spelled his name wrong...
Legend
Lol pmsl worst form owf
Worst form I've seen on a pro terrible no wonder is back is fucked lol
His back isn't fucked. He said it was sore. He's a world champion. The people putting on the competitions thought it was good enough. Hes also TRAINING and explained how he's doing it differently that day. Clown.
Video tutorial: how to get two hip replacements by the time your 50.
Ah naivete must be nice
I guess you missed the videos of him well over 50 still lifting massive weight like it's nothing. Oh well, why let facts get in the way of a moronic statement?
