Watching this in 2024, having been a viewer since before this video came out, it sure is crazy to see! Little did you know you would move to a bigger room, get a console, and your son would be playing music himself! This gives me hope that dreams do come true!
Thinking about buying one to use with ableton.... I was wondering if the money justifies how much I will use it since I’m so used to mouse and keyboard but I’d love to get used to using consoles and my ears. Any advice?
Look how awesome the UF8 was packaged. You purchased it from a retailer who takes as much pride in packing the product as they do in giving great customer service. Sweetwater rocks. Thanks for the video. Just found your channel and subscribed.
Thanks a lot Love everything you do I’m about to purchase a Dangerfox desk Thanks to you I’ve been searching everywhere and think that it is the perfect desk Keep up the great work Stay blessed
I love the console feel of having all the controls at your fingertips since I learned a lot about audio working on colsoles but every control surface falls short to me, I think my end game is getting the SSL origin which is the best designed board I have seen for a daw/console hybrid workflow, but thats a long ways down the road, for now long live mouse activism
Would be best if you had your keyboard and mouse below on a tray so you could have your controller directly in front IMO but it is a very nice piece. Congrats!!
It’s so damn cool, went and got the UC1 after playing with 360 for a day… It’s really incredible as close as your going to get to a hardware console while still being in the box…. Super happy with the new SSL stuff, it just can’t be beat… And it’s relatively affordable for what it is…
Definitely faders. I moved to an analogue desk for recording and mixing but I've worked with DAW controllers at lot in studios, one of these is very tempting tho...
I have to say how much it’s worth heading to his site and getting consults with him one on one. Really streamlined my gear list and when I’m ready to really mix down I can always hit him up again. So glad I did it.
Good video - I like the forthright statement that Sweetwater gave it to you. The production values of the video are very good, including the audio. I like the inclusion of your son also.
Having a control layer with faders definitely has an allure. I thought it was pretty cool years ago when I bought a Tascam Dm4800 with a 24 channel control layer. It turns out that I only rarely use it, however. For me, writing automation with a trackball just seems quicker, less messy, and more precise. I have to admit that I occasionally use the fader control to impress a client now and then. But, it's all just a work flow issue...pick the process that gets the job done in the most efficient way for you. Always envious of a new toy though.
A brand sparkling new SSL controller for the compact home studio..... Even if I´d still want my old school analog hybrid setup this is the stuff dreams are made of when controlling a DAW in the physical realm. Guess you´re gonna keep it. You absolute bastard! :) Congrats.
I've had an SSL Nucleus since it initially came out. 2x UF8 with transport, 2 super analogue channels; totally customisable. Great the buzz about the UF8 but, not a new concept
Nice! Sweetwater rocks. I'd figure you'd already have a controller by now ;). I hated too much mouse work after a while. I have PreSonous FP8 (and Zoom R24). I use it for mixing but also very cool is plugins the control (autofill in Studio One) saves a ton of mouse clicks.
I am having issues with uf8 and macOS Big Sur. It sorta works but it’s not accurate when I open Ableton it doesn’t detect where the faders should be. Been back and forth with support and don’t know when the Big Sur patch will be ready. Also had some issues with usb. I connected it directly to the back of my trashcan Mac Pro which are usb type 3 connections. The uf8 did not function properly at all. I recently moved it to a powered usb type 3 hub and now it’s working better but need that driver update bad.
Great review Andrew thank you, though I have tried so many DAW controllers and always end up going back to just the magic track pad a computer keyboard shortcuts, quicker, easier, less to go wrong and works 100% of the time! this SSL one looks the best so far, but I am sticking with the magic track pad! Stay safe.
I will have to replace my old artist mix, I wanted an Avid S1 but this one can make me change my mind, I need to check the quality and precision of the faders I really recommend you to put it right in front of you in the center, that's the right place, like an analog board
Just putting things together and make my own acoustic foam for a window: FUN FACT for my surprise it doesn't stop the noise! ha! ready to rearrange the setup again! 💪
Hey Andrew, in this video at 8.30 you use the channel wheel and cursor keys to scroll through the mixer on the UF8, and the mixer window is moving!! I didnt think it was capable of this, I cant get it working in Cubase, is there a trick or is it just Protools? Thanks.
Hey my brother love your channel. I've using Protools since 1987. I was just going purchace a Avid S3 when suddenly I just found out that greedy ass Avid won't have anymore support for it after 2026... So my question how awsome is this ssl controller. Need your help. Looking for truth. Thanks so much.
How do you compensate for playback delay compensation vs where the live automation lands on the timeline? Thanks for sharing the video. Very informative. 🤙🏼
hey Andrew! love the Channel, you at one point had platform (desk by output) what made you want to go another route with a studio desk? your new desk looks amazing btw
Stopping by from the year 2054 just to let everyone know that we’re on to the USB-ZGBXL, but there are plenty of USB adapters for the whole library of USB connections. In the future we’re far past discriminating against any one USB connection. That is all.
@andrewmasters thanks for your channel! How well is the uf8 fitting in the genesys 24 desk gap (after removing the plank)? I m thinking to get the desk and fit the uf8 uc1 uf1 combo in the same gap... I saw you moved the uf8 to the rack in your latest videos so was wondering if it s a good idea or not
Curious if it was racked directly in front of you where the Keystep is if you would find it more useful and productive beyond just automation. Ergonomically you might take better advantage of all the faders and display 🤓
Regarding your placement of the UF8, looking down like that for long periods of time has to be bad for your neck and comfort level overall. Get that baby in the rack and in the center position as soon as possible!! First time watcher. New Sub!!
Nice review. I want to include it on my ableton desk setup. The thing is my macbook pro is a bit old. It's 2014 model. Which one should I buy first between macbook and UF8?
Hey Andrew, You haven't found a resource of cool macros for the UF8 by any chance? It's pretty hard to write them in, if you make a mistake you have to start all over as far as I can tell. Love the thing! And one more gadget aff my list. From mostly cloudy but cold Ireland! ☘💪🏽👀👍🏽☘
Hi Andrew, any thoughts on how was the transition from mouse click to this powerful tool? After a few weeks, any final thoughts? Was is really game changing?
I've seen UF8 in your previous videos and I just can't waited to see your review on it!. Being mounted to the right UF8 with your desk looks almost like mixing console. I'm not sure if I get it correctly: will the controller be able to control Pro Tools while being on Logic layer? I'm considering buying it but I'm Reaper user (it's not officially supported). While on the Reaper side there will be no problem as I can program any controller to any function using Reaper CSI extension, but I'm curious if the UF8 is able to operate in different DAW than selected at that moment. And what's that chair you're sitting on BTW? Looks cool
I love sweetwater but I spend 5k per year from them and all I get is candy! Your a lucky fellow ! I’d like to see this unit work third party plugins? Or even an ssl eq and dynamics compression
I almost returned mine because the LPX integration was disappointing. The LPX integration has this annoying behavior where selecting a track always tries to open the first device in the channel strip, and if there isn't a device, a blank Logic device window pops up. Also, there are other mysteriously annoying behaviors too complicated to even describe. Incidentally, with Live 11 coming out in the same week as UF8, I sort of ditched LPX, and have found myself working mostly in Live 11. I kind of like the UF8 with Live and a Push 2. Don't get me wrong, I'm most productive with a keyboard and mouse, but there's always points in my workflow that benefit from sitting back and using the faders to set levels while focusing 100% with my ears. However, it's awfully expensive for what I use it for.
I haven't used the newer faderports I'm sure they're great, but for me it was a matter of workflow/utility with my desk. The UF8 feels very similar to flying faders in the spacing and layout of buttons. It also mounts perfectly in my racks right in front of me. The faders on the faderport 8 are super close together which makes it a bit tricky when you're doing automation rides and bumping the other faders, and the shape of it wouldn't work with my desk and feels a bit cheap in my humble opinion.
Hey Andrew! Great vid, I'm curious would the UF8 fit in a rack space? It kinda looks like it might from the angle where your patch bay is. I have a zaor maestro 36 desk coming and was thinking about putting on in the centre but it looks like the dimensions on the website say the UF8 would be too wide. Looking at your vid it seems it might fit between a standard rack space? any insight would be super helpful! Great channel, subbed and liked. cheers
Yes as i mentioned in the beginning, I have the rack mount ordered but they aren't in stock yet. The unit takes up 6 rack units. I can't wait to get it.
Make sure your not running Big Sur OS. Apparently it doesn't work correctly with that OS yet. Would have been nice if they had posted letting people know before they go through the trouble. And if your not using protools, many of the function buttons are useless.
Same old story with controllers and new OS's unfortunately, Cant go wrong with just the magic track pad and keyboard shortcuts, I have wasted so much time and money on controllers/ firmware updates etc. Forgetting about faders and concentrating on writing etc has been the best move I have made. The SSL looks fab however, in the past I might have been tempted, but not anymore. Enjoy
@@michaelolgaalgar5729 I have actually had a Mackie MCU for years and it's great. Best one on the market for years. Still is IMO. The only problem I had was the display fading after time. I use my trackpad and keyboard as well all the time.
