Actually kali is an older art than wing chun. Ng Mui lived between 1662-1722. Magellan was killed in the Philippines by Datu Lapu Lapu where kali was described by a Portuguese writer and sailor in the book Suma Oriental 1512-1515. Kali and silat were brought the islands when they were part of the Majapahit Empire - 1293 - 1527. They are branches of Kalaripayattu.Shaolin kung fu dates to the 16th - 17th century, with the Bodhidharma legend at least.
its very nice to see someone demonstrating a martial art without showing off. it makes it honest and beautiful to watch. to all the people making disrespectful comments: keep an open mind in all martial art or you'll never get far.
After twelve years, still nice to see. Sure a lot has changed since in FMA, particularly in Escrima and Arnis, but Kali sticks mostly to the Base and their roots in Panantukan and solo/double Baston. And its great and so much important to repeat this basics even if you are high rank student or master. keep up the great work and spirit of FMA Mabuhay to all Escrimadores and practising fellas out there.

0:08 I am learning JKD at a school in my hometown and we just learned that arm trap last week! It's so nice for a novice like myself to recognize a technique from your video. Excellent work by the way!
I learned arnis from a young age by my father and godfather who migrated to Hawaii after World War 2. Later traveled while in the military learning more from other people, styles and system. After retiring I moved here to the Philippines, Cebu to be exact I thought in the states and Europe was was high speed training, well it is but you should come to the source. They got it in high gear here. But keep training be safe and God Bless! I hope you all could make the journey here to the Mother Land, All martial Arts is good, it depends on the practitioner.
@ARTBUS1 actually, contrary to popular belief the battle of Mactan was a true battle not a duel. From Pigafettas' journal who was the chronicler of Magellan, he said that Magellan was struck by spears hurled by natives and died covering for the retreat of his already beaten men. They sailed with three ships but only had enough crewmen to run two ships back due to the heavy losses incurred during the bloody battle.
Great video, showing various moves. I like the way people on the most part, keep their eyes focused on the movements of the opponent; it's very critical in giving faster times to react. If fast motions of attack are not seen from their start, it is likely too late to stop it because the brain takes time to give the signal for our muscles to move, so every millisecond counts. Thanks for sharing, from the wonderful country, Philippines!
I'm not an expert. I'm just a Physical Education elementary teacher learning MA from youtube (but I did earned a yellow belt in taekwondo back in 1995 but afterwards no more formal training). I started my interest in learning Krav Maga and Kali on my own for my own protection on the streets. And I can personaly say that even without formal training, Kali actually worked in street fight My aggressor (obviously without training) went throwing wild punches at me. At first, all I could do was slap his punches away. And then at the right timing he threw a left jab at me that I outward block with my right, that he followed with a right cross (or was it a right hook?) that I blocked again with the same right hand followed by the traditional left hand grab, and from there (left) I knuckle-fisted the guy with my right, followed with a left hook to the face, and then spinning back-fist again with my right. It was a simple move but i looked so much like a trained fighter for someone who only learned stuff from the internet. Wait... I'm not sure now if it's Kali.
Kali and Silat does work. The reason it doesn't work in MMA is because of distance. Kali/Silat is more for close quarters combat similar to how jkd and wing chun work. In a mixed martial arts cage you have freedom of movement, in buildings and tight corridors you do not. Some of the best security and special forces units use Kali and Silat. It is deadly effective in the right situation.
The last answer precisely explains why the sport is different than an actual self defense event. One is a sport, it is staged, in a ring, like boxing is in a ring. In a real self defending, battle for your life event, it would be different. Even an untrained individual going about their day, if attacked by an assailant, may and has full potential to kill the assailant many different ways. And if attacked like that, in example an attacker with a knife, club or gun, the one who fights back, if it is with the intent to finish-kill the assailant, stands as much chance of being killed than vice versa. This is why it is stupid to attack someone lethally. Because that individual is going to fight to survive, and will not stop until they have killed the attacker.
Kali works in MMA, the reason we haven't see any UFC champion from Kali background is its smaller talent pool. People think this MA is for MMA or some shit. It might work if you’re really good at it. This MA is more like a close range fights. I’ve seen my friend used this MA in a fight and that was pretty sick cuz he finished him in a second and he almost break his opponent’s arm.
i want to see more more more!!! awesome work you guys! i'd also like to see an instructional video on some basics fundamentals and principals of this style!
@goosenooseable Yes, Pekti Tirsia is very similar to this and I can highly recommend it. There are different styles of Kali and Pekiti is one of the oldest and most effective styles. I trained for two years and I can only say that I have learned more during this time than during my 7 years of Kung Fu and 4 years of Karate.
This is some great work. If your not skilled enough you won't have the speed to quickly execute these techniques Which will allow your opponent to slip out and counter attack.
@Bakunaga I have practiced krav maga, jkd, wing chun and brazilian ji jutsu but i don't think they can compare to eskrima since eskrima or arnis is so much more effective and deadlier in my opinion, because unlike wing chun, fma by itself with no influences is perfect. You see unlike like other martial arts, fma is fine on its own with any major influences. Thats what makes filipino martial arts the most effective out of all.
Just making a point - FMA's are old, and have actually survived into modern times and modern martial application with their integration into several military forces. Battlefield and street tested gives me a pretty high opinion of them. I have survived having both knives and guns pulled on me. Changes one's perspective.

I think techniques need to be a bit varied depending on your opponent like if you are up against a smart and well-trained one or even just someone physically larger and stronger, you probably will think twice utilising some risky and complicated moves. You gotta go for the kill the soonest you can like going for the eyes or just run away.
@Mider999 You are right but engagement for a cop in uniform against a criminal is a slightly different matter. In my opinion (I have held a concealed weapons licence and been an avid shooter for over 20 years)is that if in a street fight situation if you dont have your gun out and trouble starts up close like it most often does by the time you see the knife you wont have the time and distance to get a good shot off. Taking one hand out of the fight to reach for a gun may get you killed.
@Bakunaga kuntao and silat is part of fma and the only western fencing i know in fma is the ones that are used in sports, which is not meant for actuall fighting. the only system that uses fma with jijustsu is eskrido, man fma schools only use whats native filipino since it is known to be more deadlier and lethal then what is taught from bjj and wing chun schools.

@Bakunaga Easy, panantukan is better then wing chun, panantukan doesn't need any influences. Its good on its own, unlike wing chun and ji jutsu which rips some things off of filipino martial arts.
But I'm not sure about Kali empty hand against knife attacks. Knife attack on the street is not just a single-action movement. Just like wild street punches, they will stab you multiple times successively. So I don't think a kali empty hand flow wont work. I'd rather have a stick or a lead pipe at hand, or if possible escape. Or better yet, pull out a gun.
I agree completely, sir. I would never be comfortable facing a knife wielding assailant while unarmed. And in a street encounter using melee weapons, I'd me comfortable with a lead pipe in my hand than any knife. And tama din po kayo. In the street, the gun is king.
@ 1:20 That little part where guy on the left punches and the opponent on the right blocks and detours the path of his fist, I was wondering: Is that a common 1st step you are suppose to take before delivering your self defense blows to the attacker? I ask because of course I've seen "the Bourne Films" and when I was watching the behind the scenes in one of the movies, I noticed that same gesture. It's an extraordinary martial art and would be nice to learn nevertheless. =)
when the student is advanced, and understands the concept of the drill. Even the Dog Brothers dont start that way, they build up to it. First a student has to learn the mechanics of the technique, and then they learn the application later. Drills are mean to to show the technique to the student, one has to learn to do it properly, no matter what martial art you do, that is how the beginner student will be shown, then once they get it and know, you up it to the next level. It is like playing Rocksmith, the first time you play it you play single notes, then you play chords and as you progress you put it all together. But first you have to learn the little things, and how to get there... going full speed, and against a resisting opponent off the bat isnt teaching you that, and can lead to bad practices. Start slow, get the technique and then you can add more as you progress.
David Downs I understand what you mean because I used to do jkd concepts and trust me I understand the process of learning . But I will never see a Kali or jkd person just introduce them selves talk about the knife, show the technique and now show it with aliveness. When ever a person comment on jkd or kali demo stuff but yet do not show restiance they always keep trying to give that process of learning before you get there and I truly believe that's there excuse of getting out of being held accountable for not teaching a person aliveness. Yet they can collect that money and justify the price due to them being in a tree or lineage of other teachers teaching pattern crap. Its become a scam. When some one has this mysterious lineage now no one can now question there methodology. This a new day new era its the era of mma and we want to see things that work and work against trained people when some one is not allowing you to do it not a patty cake drill or you do this and I do that. The key is restiance. If you want to learn how to fight you have to have the person fighting back. Thats my take to much pattern and no aliveness.
Anthony Allen, the problem is that real knife defense is hard. A slight change in angle of the knife attack can mean you got cut or stabbed and no one really attacks like they do during training drills. There is an art to learn, but realistically angles, footwork, and parry and blocks trained during live sparring is all you need to learn for defense.
@copypacercopypacer you realize that all of those martial arts you stated including FMA are made up of different martial systems right? Kali/Arnis/Eskrima has obvious influences from kuntao, silat, western fencing, and in some schools even jiujutsu. I agree that kali is very practical but also has it's limitations.
Actually kali is an older art than wing chun. Ng Mui lived between 1662-1722. Magellan was killed in the Philippines by Datu Lapu Lapu where kali was described by a Portuguese writer and sailor in the book Suma Oriental 1512-1515.

Start slow, get the technique and then you can add more as you progress.
but i will say the knife stuff here is pretty sketchy. But for empty handed stuff, I think the above applies.

@bladesociety You should get super buff so you can fight better.
Not to mention Wing Chun is actually older, and is only similar in regards of trapping techniques.
Where is this gym at? Is it in the Philippines?
very cool
You will never trap/catch a knife wielding arm in a fight as it's flailing about. Don't even try it.
That is great advice! It is always safer to keep distance than to try to engage a knife-wielding assailant. Thank you!

I just said bobbing and weaving isn't good in a street fight, read the comment properly before replying.
