Great video, no pointless chatter or theme songs or other clutter! Just straight to the point. You've earned your spot as my youtube go-to guy for BJJ in the gi!
Your videos have both helped enormously and also inspired me to begin systematizing my game. I’m going to search your channel and elsewhere for an explanation of guard options and what activates them-i.e., opponent attempts this pass in such-and-such a way, giving you these opportunities to grip, which makes this or that guard possible. If I don’t find an explanation along these lines I’ll start putting one together on paper. Ideally it would allow me sort out my game and help me structure my training and drilling.
I love your videos and recommend them all the time. Excellent detail, but you also include the concepts/strategies behind the technique that make it more dynamic. I've personally been working more on my bottom half guard and was wondering if you'd do some videos on that position (philosophy, sweeps, attacks etc). Thank you.
Jordan Cleckler depends on which half Guard you are referring to. I play a lot of single leg guard which is a variation, but I do not play deep half much. I want to focus my channel on only showing stuff I have a very high understanding of. So at some point I will probably do a month or two of specific work on deep half and then make some videos on that topic. For right now I will focus on a lot of the things I am currently very knowledgeable about. Single leg guard videos will be coming soon though.
thx a lot Jon this video is so helpful, i always have trouble to deal with HQ position when i was on the bottom. would you plz make a video to demonstrate how do you solve this position when you are on the bottom thx a lot .
Your videos tell detials so it's great! Just wonder if you would do any no gi? At lessy maybe you can mention how to apply shown techiniqes in no gi at the end of your vidoes for gi just a thought thank you!
This is awesome, there are a few players at my gym who have nearly unstoppable leg weave passes. I usually find myself with my defending leg too deep under the weaving arm so mobility is hampered. I'm sure focusing on getting the knee out further is the detail I've been missing.
montana payne awesome try it out let me know how it works and what difficulties you have. I will try to help give feedback as you develop it. Make sure you keep the inside knee that’s pinned close to you. Let me know how it goes.
stefano cioni I’m very aware of flexibility factors for techniques, I have addressed this in previous videos. I don’t think for this technique a ton of flexibility is required. All techniques have a base flexibility and strength requirement, take your mobility work seriously. It’s often easier to build mobility than it is to create a technical work around a position. I find many students have limiting beliefs about this. Read the book stretching and flexibility by kit laughlin. Like it or not it’s a part of our sport. In taekwondo or kick boxing the basic of the sport is developing flexibility, you can’t do 70 percent of the techniques with out it. Take it seriously it’s the easiest way to improve your game fast.
Thank you for all your videos! Helping so much!!! I know you mentioned that you try not inverting as much but sometimes when I am trying to get my hips back in from granby rolls or other similar scenarios I get my legs stacked over my head (their hands pinning my ankles to the mat). Do you have any help for this scenario? I always end up getting put in leg drag with their knee already over my leg pinning it (which I would like to see defense to as well if possible please!) or they reach around for my high collar and pressure in until my legs fold to the side. Any thoughts?
blahnisa That’s the reason I don’t like to granby roll to recompose very often, I feel it’s too easy to get stuck there. Depending on the flexibility level of your hips and neck you can try to push their hand up off of your ankle then kind of shoulder walk back and let your hips drop towards floor. It’s hard to describe through text. If you stretch where you to side split stretch and lay forward that helps a lot with your ability to escape stack. Michael langhi does that very well. If you want you can message me on IG or Messenger and I will send you a short clip trying to give you some answers for the situation. Thanks
Could you please go over leg drag counters. I've seen some advanced guard players using their free leg to hook behind passers calf from the inside... Are there any other methods you use?
Eugene Bidchenco I can definitely cover this, I feel very good at defending The Leg Drag, it’s one of the reasons I don’t like to leg drag often I prefer toreando variations instead. Are you referring specifically to when they Leg Drag you in de la riva? Or any other specific situations
JonThomasBJJ thank you for your replay. Yes, normally I do see it from DLR or just an open guard when the bottom guy guy does not have any grips. So if a passer drags your right leg across, you quickly insert (hook) your left leg behind his calf or knee from the inside. I hope I am making myself clear.))
I'd assume during the foot press to break the grip you can potentially get your right hand spider grip, continue pushing with the foot, and then replace your left foot with your right foot to reset the position as well?
Eddie the Foot You can do that for sure, only difficulty could be if the guy had strong grip you really need to press your body away hard. If your holding his sleeve it may keep you so close it’s harder to break the grip. I will play with it some and see how I feel about it, but that’s my instinct from thinking about it.
Man, I can't believe the quality stuff you are putting out for free. Thanks!

Love your teaching. Best Bjj videos on the web
Cheers for this. You always have interesting takes on technique. Thanks!
Love your videos. Keep it up!
i knew this video was going to be money from the title :D Much needed and thanks as always

Excellent content. I think these shortened types of videos are more to my liking. Keep up the good work!

I usually change the leg weave to a leg lasso and invert. Foot detail to brake the collar grip is going to come in handy thanks.
great detail with the foot on the bicep!
Keep up the great work!
This is my highest percentage pass, just hit it on a black belt last night. I really hope my training partners don't see this video lol
Amazing variation
Brilliant!!!

@JonTomasBJJ. Can you make a video on how to counter when your opponent stalls in various guards. Like the closed, spider and other guards.
Hami Abdullah Great idea! I will shoot that video today, more conceptual but very good topic.
JonThomasBJJ could you do a video on a fake guard pull to a ankle pick.
Nice content! Subbed!
You are super flexible man, u don’t recognise how inflexible how most gents are in their hips etc. this will not work for 95% plus

OH DANG, HERE WE GO.
Do a video on good turtle posture, how to avoid grips on your lapel and reguard
Good suggestion!
SICK!!

JonThomasBJJ makes sense!
everyone gives up on the leg weave pass on me, so i never get to invert triangle anybody :(
defense to cartwheel pass?
diabolic42090 Don’t think I can do a whole video on this topic but can cover it during a video about grip fighting on bottom.
