I make that mistake of turning to my side and going to knee shield all the time and always felt like I was already 2 steps behind. This is gold! More videos exactly like this please.
I watched all of your videos. Your videos are amazing. It's very applicable!! I really appreciate for sharing your knowledge with us all the time. Thank you again!
Jon been a long time. I’m from KC and trained with Steve Hannah years ago until he passed away. Last time I was at Vaghi’s was years ago and got to train with you, big mike, Todd fox (was in town) Brazilian mike etc. that was old school. Glad to see your still training and teaching. 👍🏽
I’ve really been trying to adopt this guard defense system and had some success with it the other night against a younger, faster, stronger, more experienced opponent. I still have the habit of using that knee shield though which is tough against much heavier opponents. I just really need to work on quickly transitioning to getting good grips and counter attacking once I stall that initial guard pass attempt. I think that’s where I struggled. However this guard retention game has really opened up some opportunities for me. Thanks!!!
Hey! I just listened to you on the gcp podcast and searched for you on yt, and I'm so glad I did. I was really intrigued by your analytic approach to bjj. Please keep uploading as there aren't any bjj proffesers in NW UK with your approach or experience
JonThomasBJJ np man, I love fellow redheads in the sport. Ive got a question though: how would I win back the inside space in half/rdlr when they underhook your distance keeping leg while youre playing bottom (distance keeping leg as in one that is not hooking)?
Well that was like a private for me. I keep making that knee shield mistake and I haven't found a way to make it work. I just never use the leg over the top defense and I see it all the time in videos of competitive matches. Thanks Jon.
Quality videos, helps to patch holes in my blue belt game :) keep them coming. Also would request Toreado pass defense video. Not that technique where you grab the sleeve and shrimp out it does not work against better and bigger dudes.
You have an excellent content right there, can you teach us how to use the closed guard against big guys? I'm have problems because my team mates don't even try to break it, just hold the fight till I tire :/
yes! i needed this video so badly! If you could give me the secret for defending the toreando pass too that would be amazing. My instructor has killed me with that one for months
Man what gym you train at? I would love to visit y'all one day, I already said once my I'll say it again: These videos about concepts in jiu jitsu are the best. Much love.
Hey Jon, I remember you talking about doing a stretching/Mobility routine for bjj. What does yours look like? Is it different before and after training?

Fantastic Jon! These videos are gold. Would love to see your approach to recovering from hip smash/fold position
My vote is for the over/under pass defense, close seconds double under pass def. Thanks Jon for the knowledge!!

Awesome. The "common mistakes" explanation is especially valuable for me.

That makes a lot of sense. Great detail and I really like the thought process 👍🤙
Solid defense and fluid motion in guard play. Great non rigid approach to stopping your guard from getting passed with the cut
4years on great video thank you 🙏
Great video, that last knee shield knee cut spot is where I’m getting stuck a lot

Just what I needed! Can you post some follow ups to this? Like how you play or what you build on rdlr? etc?
Thank you, Jon! You helped me a lot🙏

This is awesome I asked a top level guy about this position, he just said "dont give them underhook".
