As a Libertarian Socialist Republican my feelings are similar. The whole "undefeated army" thing was for Sinn Fein & Gerry Adams to sell merch. Self-criticism as hard as it might be is the only way Republicans will improve. Two of the best books in that regard are Ed Moloney's "Voice's from the Grave" were he interviews Darky Hughes, and Tommy McKearney's "Provisional IRA - From Insurrection to Parliament".

Gerry & Marty wanted to run down the IRA, if you listen to Adams speeches I think he wanted to run down the IRA since the late 70s, that's why him & others turned the IRA into a cell structure, this was a disaster, the cells worked well in England because you only needed 3-4 volunteers operating in England as not to bring much at0[tention to yourself, this worked great with the 1973 - 1976 campaign especially with the Balcombe Street 4 who turned the West End into a war zone, giving the British establishment a taste of their own medicine.
But the Cell system was useless in Ireland, you needed a mass popular liberation army that the people could relate to on the streets and who the people could identify with. 0[0[The IRA leadership pointed to the Bessbrok, Warrenpoint and Dungannon W

But they decided if they could take control of the IRA they could make it smaller and more compact and centralize power to themselves which they did by 1983 and they used the IRA as a tool to give them leverage in political negotiations with the British which they did from around 1989 - 1998 when they signed the GFA.

Ireland cannot be independent while it is in the European Union. They are currently being ruled by the non democratic Technocrats in Brussels. The Irish people have no control over their own country. They are in a permanent minority. They have 14 Irish MEP's out of a total of 705 in the EU, so they have to follow the laws made by people who they didn't vote for and who do not live in Ireland. The primary reason for conflict is not the british or irish government or unionists or nationalists it is religion and identity politics. You are wrong there, my friend. The reason for the conflict was rather simple. Inequality. No democracy.
Unionists had absolute control of the economy of NI post partition. The republicans were persecuted. They did not have access to work or the vote. How could it not lead to conflict? My great grandfather was an Orangeman of some note from Belfast. The other side of my family is Catholic. It’s very clear what happened.
Thankfully, we have peace (if not prosperity) in the north. And being an EU member, although not always ideal, affords security in the face of British leaders like Johnson and May. Yet to see what Sunak will be like.

Neither was there majority support for the IRA's campaign in the 70's and 80's in Northern Ireland. I much prefer to elevate someone like John Hume, a true man of peace than any former members of the IRA. I am convinced for instance that if it was not for endless talking to the IRA over the years, that they may not have come to the realization that the war was at a stalemate. You do know that the uneasy peace has only been established since the IRA gave up political violence as a tactic? There is no fundamental difference between the current Peace Process and the Sunningdale Agreement in the 1980's. The major difference is that finally the British Government put on their big boy pants and did not cave to Unionist intransigence. Besides, the notion of killing your fellow countrymen in to a 32 country Republic is abhorrent to me. The Unionist population is not going away and soon enough, the Republic of Ireland will be challenged with how to protect the rights of a large minority, many of whom will remain deeply suspicious of being ruled from Dublin.

@@cdeignan47 You cannot rewrite history to suit narrative, that is what happened after the executions ,support for the Irish Volunteers later I.R.A became widespread, To gain freedom requires violence in most cases, Those who have the power will never give it up willingly, Better to fight and die for the freedom of your country instead been in the British army fighting to keep some other country from gaining their freedom.

@@cdeignan47 most armed insurrectionist movements all over the world in history have always been in the minority.....most nationalists in the north joined the republican movement without romantic ideals on their minds.....in my opinion.....they wanted to hit back and get revenge sadly because of the way they were treated.....it definitely set back unification of Ireland by at least 50 years or more.... hopefully people will learn from the past but in the north I'm not so confident in that
