  • Brendan "The Dark" Hughes Speaks! "This war was to bring about a Democratic Socialist Republic, to fight for the working class!"
Interview with John McDonagh of Radio Free Eireann in Spring, 2000. In this interview given after the Irish Republican Writers Group published the first volume of Fourthwrite, legendary IRA commander Brendan "The Dark" Hughes discusses a wide range of subjects. From his early memories of growing up in Belfast to joining the Irish Republican Army and escaping from prison, Hughes gives a first hand account of the war fought by Irish Republicans. Brendan also discusses the Hunger Strikes at length as well as the "Peace Process" engaged in by his former comrade in the Republican Movement. Utterly compelling interview from one of the most feared, and respected, guerilla fighters of the 20th century. Brendan Hughes stayed true to his republican calling and socialist convictions throughout his eventful life. In later years, Hughes was determined that history not be rewritten by the "victors" and the truth about the struggle be known by future generations so that they might learn from it. It is with that in mind that this interview is presented. Brendan Hughes, soldier of liberation, died at 59 on February 16, 2008.
