💡Tip for anyone who loves bully breeds but doesn't have the energy for intense physical activity: Go to your local shelter and adopt a senior pittie. Even the ones I've had that spent their whole life on a chain, was effortlessly house trained. They are very mellow, are perfectly exercised with a short few walks a day, and after being rescued...they have an unmatched appreciation for you giving them a new family that loves them after a lifetime without it. Bonus is that you are really helping a dog that would likely otherwise be put down since so many Pitties are euthanized each year, and senior dogs are often looked over (despite being super loving, extra chill, and low maintenance compared to young dogs). They are pure magic. Most incredible dogs ever. P.s. Pitties are the only dogs I've ever had, first dog and all...but I've only had senior pitbull rescues and they are perfect for my energy level.
Great advice for anyone with the patience to deal with the aging issues of health and incontinence, etc... they deserve all we can give them at every stage... a personal favorite, they are great dogs for the responsible and knowledgeable owner...

I had a female named Moolah. She was my best friend. Wherever we went, if she saw little kids she would beg me to go over to them so she can play with them. I would usually comply because sometimes she would get a little mad if she didn't get she wanted. Sometimes that would culminate in her destroying the most sacred thing in the house which is the TV remote. I went through a lot of those...
I watched this video before I got my amstaff puppy almost three years ago (because some people told me that you have to be an “alpha leader” to own this type of breed). He’s now 2 and a half years old and the best thing that ever happened to me. He’s funny, loyal, social, caring, has bad patience and loves to play. My experience with this breed is that they mature pretty late and it’s not a dog you leave at home every day. They’re super social and outgoing if they’re properly socialized and are happy to follow you every where (they’re extremely loyal to their family.) I know a lot of people like to call them “nanny dogs” but I wouldn’t personally let my dog play with small children or small dog breeds. Not because he’s aggressive or doesn’t like them, it’s because these dogs are really strong/heavy and energetic and they don’t realize it themselves, they can easily accidentally knock a child over. He’s great with older children, adults and bigger dogs tho (he’s in doggie day care.) The only “negative” things I have to say is that we have to work on patience, lead pulling when he sees wild animals and they can also be big chewers. You don’t have to be super athletic to have this type of dog, they just need a balance between mental and physical stimulation (we do rally obedience for fun.) And you can not be to harsh on them (they take it personally haha) being a stable, patient, positive leader that’s fun to work with is the best way to go. With that said, if you’re interested in getting a medium active allround dog don’t look past this breed because of their bad rumor, this might be your perfect best friend.
3 months ago i had to put my AmStaff to sleep, for his own good. I miss him every second.he was almost 15years old.I've never felt love like he gave it to me. I cry every day when i am alone. Yesterday i got a tattoo with his name. If you are searching for a soulmate, a friend for life, buy a AmStaff. Tony i miss you, i will never ever forget you
Our 7 month old boy loves the dog park. He'll play with any dog that doesn't scare him too much, and happily take pats from everyone in the park. We want him as socialised as possible.
You wouldn't recommend this breed for a first time dog owner, yet mine fell into my lap because she was kicked out and became a stray after being bred..... It depends on the person I would say. I've never even lived with a dog...but this is the BEST dog I've met ever. I would die for my dog. And I train her as much as I can and I watch what I can to learn more. IF YOU HAVE PASSION: Get an amstaff.
I just got my 8 week old am staf 5 days ago and I’m blown away by what a GOOD dog this breed is. She learned sit her first day and does it regularly and on cue now…5 days in. She’s learning the “come” cue and doesn’t even always take the treat, she started to just tap her nose to my hand and then goes back to playing. Cracks me up. Loves her crate, fully 💩 housebroken (her bladder is tiny, so I know it take a while) She’s already the star of the neighborhood. 🥹
I love my am staff…wish people understood the difference between them and pit bulls. Pit bulls are wonderful don’t misunderstand…just wish people could tell the difference
Parents never had any Pitties but slowly educating myself about them. I’ve been around German Shepherds, Poodles, Akita’s, and Great Pyrenees throughout with family but looking out at different breeds of dogs beforehand I make a buy on a dog.
This lady knows what she’s talking about and she has beautiful dogs 😊👏🏼! The Amstaff & APBT were the same at one point, but now are 2 separate breeds used for different things. The Amstaff is mainly bred for a show type structure, definitely has more bone, more of a boxy shape, slightly lager more square shaped head, wonderful with people, most of the animal aggression has been bred out (but can still be there with some dogs like she said) and has a more calmer show dog temperament. The APBT (what I work with) is bred to the original standard of the APBT breed ( minus the fighting obviously.) They should be full of energy, built for work, shouldn’t be over done (less bone in the overall structure of the dog), slim muscular build, is prone to animal aggression (there are dogs who don’t have this trate, but it’s more common then the Amstaff,) and they absolutely should be people friendly (it is out of the standard to have a Pit Bull aggressive towards people. If your at an ADBA show and your dog barks at a judge you will be asked to leave the show ring, human aggression is not tolerated.) The are both fantastic dogs, I love both, but are now different breeds.
At 2:50, she discusses a bit of the history. She says that they crossed the Bulldog with the White Terrier. I saw two great videos on this breed by Dogumentary TV that featured Diane Jessup and Richard F. Stratton. Both of them basically said that the American Pit Bull was the Bulldog. They even mentioned Pit Bulls being involved in bull baiting and work with bulls that the Bulldogs of that time would have done. Stratton went into more detail questioning and explaining why the idea of dogs needing to be crossed with Terrier to make them more game or more agile did not really add up. I am not exactly sure which is correct, but I lean more towards going with Jessup and Stratton. I am not criticizing this individual or saying she does not know what she is talking about, because Stratton said that is the history most people go with that seems to be more of the origins of the Bull Terrier that got confused with the American Pit Bull. I just wanted to point that out.
Before they were called APBTs they were known as English Staffordshire Bull Terriers(ESBTs). It seems to me that the old English bull terriers(EBTs) and English Staffordshires have a similar history. Staffordshires probably just had more “bulldog” content while EBTs had more Terrier. Once the ESBTs were brought to America, the breed evolved into the APBT. The ESBTs that stayed in the UK became mostly show dogs with breeders focusing on looks and calm temperament rather than gameness and athleticism. There was probably a huge gene pool of dogs back in the 1700s/1800s with crazy diversity. I believe the original bulldog used for bull baiting didn’t have a standard. They may have bred those dogs with a terrier to make the dog a bit smaller and more tenacious. Tbh, when it comes to animal aggression, it’s those little 30 pound terriers that really tear shit up and give no fucks about getting hurt.
As to the mention of history and the crossing of the bulldog with the White Terrier or to be more specific the Old English White Terrier , this was actually crossed with the existing bull and terrier hybrids of the time to creat a more even and showable type dog by James Hinks and which went on to be called firstly the White Cavalier and eventually the English Bull Terrier.
I had the English s,b.t and he was so game ,rats, rabbits, cats, and with other dogs was crazy, but apart from that was the best family dog ever it just means I couldn't get another dog or pet when mad max was about awesome dog though
I always say there are many breeds that are great at certain things, but amstafs/apbt's can do everything good. Imo the best all around dog breed. Also easy grooming, relatively healthy, no slobber or crazy shedding, just a great low maintenance dog with a great temperament and great physique.
There is very little health risk!!!!!! They are one of the top breads of very low health issues. Everything else this lady is talking about I would agree with. I have Been breading for over 15years
I'd say I can believe they can have some working ability.the breed seems to have been created from a lineage of working breeds.we had an am staff mix growing up.looked a lot like the one in this video, except he's massive.lol my dad still has him,he's about 13 years old and still a pretty active dog.he is the sweetest boy ever.
Staffy, even called "Nanny dog" is the english, Staffordshire bullterrier! Amstaff is the American staffordshire terrier! Some ppl seem to mix them up! 😮I've have had both!! Size and looks are totally different!
Someone threw our dog out of a car when she was a pup. we’ve had her 8 years now and while she is skittish, she is the sweetest, most loyal dog. Can’t go to dog parks tho
To most: yes...you will see this "type" of dog in a shelter. The AST is much different from what most shelters are going to have - its going to be mostly APBTs. I'm just reiterating what others have said...different breed. An AST is not going to sit in a shelter for long.
I love my American staffy Baxter he's nearly 5 years old and I've had him less than a year! He is very protective of me, based on how I treat him! He is very spoilt and built like a brick shithouse, but I've imprinted on him
The ears are cropped so that when they are in a dog fight the other dog does not rip the ear and potentially lose the fight. Its for purpose not looks.
@@Alex10daysago You're making my point. Its done for fighting. If you own this breed as a pet, then cropping the ears is ONLY done for aesthetics. There is no reason to do it to a pet.
black star so you’re saying you rather the dog has his ear torn off during a fight? That must be very painful for the dog. No need for it to suffer if preventable measure can be placed to hold back extra cuts or tears during a fight.
@@Alex10daysago No, I'm saying you DON'T put your dog in dog fighting. That's cruel. What's wrong with you?You think people should be pitting these dogs against one another. I KNOW EXACTLY WHY people do it.It is unnecessary unless you are going to make your dog fight. So unless you are advocating for dog fighting, then WTF are you talking about?
Historically, ear cropping has been advocated as a health benefit for certain breeds with long, hanging ears. It was believed that dogs with standing ears may suffer from fewer ear infections than dogs with hanging ears. It has also been hypothesized that standing ears are less prone to damage and subsequent medical complications, especially in working dogs.
The first Ambullys back in 1980 were a cross of APBT and Amstaff other breeds were introduced later on so most if not all bullies have Staffordshire terrier in their genetic makeup.
Stop cropping their ears. They have such cute ears and half their emotions are expressed by their ears. Neither of my two pitties have had cropped ears.
My dog is an Amstaff American pit mix, but she meets the exact height, weight, and shape of the Amstaffs shown in this video. With the exception of her ears not being clipped.
@@flyy1312 It’s actually essentially the same thing as having a new born baby boy circumcised. They do it within the first few months of life, and the dog is given anesthesia as well as numbing agents around the incision site. It’s even an out patient procedure bc it’s so benign. My husband had us do it for our male so that the girls couldn’t pull his ears accidentally while they were babies. Long story short, it’s actually a super simple procedure and doesn’t really hurt the dogs at all unless done improperly.
@@flyy1312 No actually male children are circumcised (if they’re circumcised bc most none European countries don’t) for religious and esthetic reasons. There are some arguments for health reasons but generally physicians today agree that there is no real medical reason to today given the widespread use of soap and generally better hygiene. So that said, it’s actually the perfect analogy. 👍🏻
What work would you say they are best suited for? I travel all the time but would love to have something that could possibly use it’s nose to do some tracking type things like my JRT
Ive owned German Shepherds my whole life and they are one of my favor dog breeds, but im seeking a medium size dog and ive always loved terriers and their energy. Im debating on a Amstaff or Bull Terrier

@@kvee6840 genetics have changed over the years. You look at an apbt and they're different for sure. When you breed for show you lose characteristics of the original breed the apbt.
@@roelguerra8604 Of course but that goes for any breed. Unless the apbt is being bred to scratch it'll lose those characteristics as well. That being said there are still most definitely working staffs and game staffs out there as well. Not everyone just breeds solely on looks.

Tony i miss you, i will never ever forget you
We have a 16 month Amstaff, he's a character and bundle of muscly energy.
I thought I am adopting and saving a Amstaff. But it turns out my boy saved me.
Thanks for the upload man, great video! Hoping to get am AmStaff for the Fam some time soon!
Our 7 month old boy loves the dog park. He'll play with any dog that doesn't scare him too much, and happily take pats from everyone in the park. We want him as socialised as possible.
While herding type dogs are my type and I wouldn't want to own one of these myself, all the dogs in this video are so stunning!!
Surprised she only said 3to 4 times a week. Surely a hr everyday is what most breeds need.
Bare minimum
same, my boy gets 2-3h runs everyday and a lot of training + its my first dog.
The most affectionate breed
I have an Amstaff/Australian cattle dog mix and he is a great pet.
The breed really Rocks...so does the trainers.
Bred these beautiful terrier for 6 years. Now I'm on malinois. Still have my main stud the."primus"
Very nice video. Congrats from Italy
BEST DOGS EVER... 💚🐾💚
5:50 this is a very important point!
“They want to be with you” this. My boy drake was attached to my hip. A jack of all trades. He will always be with me. I miss you buddy.
Wow those are some beautiful dogs
Very accurate video, spot on !
@@ronagresta6734 definitely 👍🏼
I just wana point out Diane Jessup is a bonafide RAT 🐀
@@carlobrigante881 I don't think that is the case at all, but even if it were, there is still Richard F. Stratton's word to take into account.
@@carlobrigante881 what'd she do
Before they were called APBTs they were known as English Staffordshire Bull Terriers(ESBTs).
The best dog in the world..
while i like to leave my dogs ears and tails Natural i will say whoever cropped her dogs ears did a nice job!!
Beautiful breed!
Whoever crops a dog's ears is a piece of shit
Great vid !
Keep you're dogs safe always 💓
There is very little health risk!!!!!! They are one of the top breads of very low health issues. Everything else this lady is talking about I would agree with. I have Been breading for over 15years
I'd say I can believe they can have some working ability.the breed seems to have been created from a lineage of working breeds.we had an am staff mix growing up.looked a lot like the one in this video, except he's massive.lol my dad still has him,he's about 13 years old and still a pretty active dog.he is the sweetest boy ever.
Took my 8 month old on a walk and 3 dogs surrounded us...he takes off and goes to play with them...me standing there like, wait; what? 🤣
Pack instincts!.
They are 100 percent the best dogs but they keep the pressure on you relentless ball and chains
Thanks for the knowledge!
I love this breed so much even over the APBT
Amstaffs, staffies nd bull terrier....most consistent nd best breeds..
Huge fan of the puppies Kicker and Frank
Staffy, even called "Nanny dog" is the english, Staffordshire bullterrier! Amstaff is the American staffordshire terrier! Some ppl seem to mix them up! 😮I've have had both!! Size and looks are totally different!
I miss my amstaffs. Beautiful dogs
Okay RUclips is being funny... because all the sudden i wasnt subscribed to this channel but i BEEN subbed..
go to any animal shelter and you’ll see 90% or more are these type of dogs
Adopt don’t shop.
Someone threw our dog out of a car when she was a pup. we’ve had her 8 years now and while she is skittish, she is the sweetest, most loyal dog. Can’t go to dog parks tho
The Rockabillys Band Most at shelters are APBT’s not AST’s.
To most: yes...you will see this "type" of dog in a shelter. The AST is much different from what most shelters are going to have - its going to be mostly APBTs. I'm just reiterating what others have said...different breed. An AST is not going to sit in a shelter for long.
@@IslenoGutierrez they are the same breed
Best dogs.
Beautiful dogs
The Moscow watchdog would be an awsome video
I had dogs growing up but never had dogs with my family...
Looking at this dog since they are most popular at shelters
Great vid per usual, but I have a question.
Could you do a vid on medium-large dog breeds suitable for first time owners?
Belloooo!!!!!!! L' amstaff.
I love my American staffy Baxter he's nearly 5 years old and I've had him less than a year! He is very protective of me, based on how I treat him! He is very spoilt and built like a brick shithouse, but I've imprinted on him
This woman is an exemplary breeder.
I just wish people wouldn't mutilate their ears.Nice to see none of them in this video had tails docked as well.
I have an American bully and I’m pretty sure she’s half Staffy half Bulldog. I love her to death. She’s a tough cookie but loves her some hoomans
Only brainless people can do that do their dogs
@@flyy1312 clip their ears?
@@flyy1312 It’s actually essentially the same thing as having a new born baby boy circumcised. They do it within the first few months of life, and the dog is given anesthesia as well as numbing agents around the incision site. It’s even an out patient procedure bc it’s so benign. My husband had us do it for our male so that the girls couldn’t pull his ears accidentally while they were babies. Long story short, it’s actually a super simple procedure and doesn’t really hurt the dogs at all unless done improperly.
@@cami4CYeshua787 dude u can't compare those two things lmao baby are circumcised for health reasons and you clip dog ears for esthetic reason
I like this woman knowledge in this breed of dog
Ive owned German Shepherds my whole life and they are one of my favor dog breeds, but im seeking a medium size dog and ive always loved terriers and their energy. Im debating on a Amstaff or Bull Terrier
Hi Zeke! please make a Dogumentary on the Korean Mastiff, Abruzzese Mastiff, Aksaray Malaklısı and American Mastiff. By the way I'm a big fan of your channel. THE BEST DOG CHANNEL on RUclips without a shadow of a doubt.
I Hate when people say these are pitbulls. They are not the American pitbull terrier. They are two different breeds
Why? They are still bull and terrier dogs. Same exact genetics as an apbt.
I'm getting one this February. My labrador is pregnant so I will get it after she has given birth.
Nice dogs! I have two biutifull Amstaff femails in Russia too with an american bloodlines.
