      Thank you for sharing Jeffrey. What an amazing heirloom you have. Not only is this a personal treasure for you, but your Mom would have spent a LOT on this back in1954; with just the table alone being very $$$$$. As is always true of any vintage appliance, be sure to inspect your electrical cords and replace if warranted.

    I have this machine in a gorgeous walnut cabinet. It runs well and has the manual and all the attachments, most of which I never used because I am not a great seamstress. I got this over 30 years ago from a retired professional seamstress. I maybe used it 40 times over the years. I have no idea how to price it. It's taking up space and I know someone would love to have this.
    Edit: after reading all this and more I have decided to keep it. Now retired, thinking I might sew myself a little something. Maybe a throwback peasant shirt from an Indian tapestry. Remember those?

And yes, I agree, all of the Necchis I have restored are some of the finest engineered sewing machines I have ever encountered. I restored a pink Necchi Nora which is shown in one of my videos. It is metal covered with plastic sleeve. It is used for lowering the feed dogs for darning. FYI, BE CAREFUL with that part of your Necchi. They work just 'ok' but are fussy and can droop causing your feed dogs not to feed all that well. If you don't intend on doing any darning or free motion sewing with your Necchi, I would leave that feature alone. Just my 2 cents!

    I have Necchi machine from the 50's or early 60's that belonged to my mother. It's very heavy but it is in its own case and is meant to be portable and used on any table top. It has been in good working order, however, over the last 10 years, either the machine or it's case has developed a rancid odor so intense that I don't use it at all. I took it to a repair shop, thinking the oil needed to be changed but was told that it was "off-gassing" and that there was nothing to be done about it. Do you have any suggestions? It's a shame to own it, have memories of my mother using it decades ago and not be able to use it myself. P. S., I spent a year in Pavia, Italy in my 20's and two of my three roommates worked at the Necchi factory!

    • @VintageSewingMachineGarage
      @VintageSewingMachineGarage  4 года назад

      Hi Amy. You are so fortunate to have your Necchi as a family heirloom. Although old oil/grease can absorb some odors, I am willing to bet most if not all of the odor your machine has is coming from the case. Most cases back them were made of pressboard or think plywood for the covers and wooden frames for the bases. The culprit though is often the material coverings that were applied to these cases. Sometimes, it was bark cloth, vinyl, (often textured to look like leather), or some form of what we might call today "Contact paper". Over the years, moisture gets absorbed into these cases and mold/mildew can grow. The whole situation is exacerbated because the glues they used are also fertile ground for mold. Metals don't generally absorb odors unless they have a layer of old oil/dust/Nicotine on them and some do. The great news is I think there is hope for your machine, but a lot less hope for the carry case. Some folks will try spraying them with various products to remove the smell, but I really feel you would benefit from replacing the case with another. You can get new machine bases made out of wood. (See sellers online) and most are reasonable. Or, you can search for a used case that is free of the odors. The bed dimensions for MOST Necchi machines match the dimensions of Singer 15 models and so its not a rare thing for you to seek out. Cleaning your machine will also help remove any residues that might trap odors on the metal parts. I would remove the machine from the current case and give it time to air out and breath. Sunlight is a great antiseptic. Good luck with your Necchi. I love mine and it wasnt even my Mom's!!

    • @amyhirschel3005
      @amyhirschel3005 4 года назад +2

      @@VintageSewingMachineGarage Thank you for your kind response. Your suggestion about the carrying case makes perfect sense and I will see if I can find a replacement. The machine has never had a problem that I know of and in this case, I think it's true that they really don't make them like they used to. Many thanks, once again.

It is in a large mahogany sewing desk that I have moved more times than I can say. I have attempted to use it a few times. If memory serves it has quiet a few accessories & has a cool box to store almost everything. This model has a pedal & knee control. I love the clickity sound of this machine. You mentioned emailing you but I'm at a loss on how to do that thru YT.

    I got the new cording on my Necchi BU Mira and thankfully the wires were all alright and did not have to mess with those. My problem is that the hand wheel i have to help along when trying to sew It gets stuck and i have oiled the wick inside the wheel and i have really oiled well but it is still sticking. DO you know what is causing that? Do you have any videos showing some of the things that you had to service on yours or any machines that have similar features that would be useful in helping those of us who have this wonderful machine. Thanks so much for everything you teach I would love to see your handy work on repairs for this very machine I think i may need a new belt and if so where can i get one. ? Someone said i could use a singer strectchy rubber belt at Joanns not sure if they are right. any help would be appreciated

    • @VintageSewingMachineGarage
      @VintageSewingMachineGarage  5 лет назад

      Hello Denise. There can be many causes of your hand wheel slowing/stopping, but first thing to check is your belt. As belts age, they loose their gripping ability. I would clean the groove of the handwheel with a cotton swab and then check the tension of your belt to make sure its not too loose (Do this gradually since you dont want a belt overtightened either). If this is not helpful, then a new belt can be ordered online and they are not very costly. I would highly recommend using an orange lugged belt or new black belt but I do not agree with the suggestiong of using stretch rubber belts. They were originally created so that people could buy one belt or a set of those to fit multiple machine lengths. But those belts are not a good substitute as they rob a LOT of the motor's power and can strain the motor.

Love your videos as always

    • @VintageSewingMachineGarage
      @VintageSewingMachineGarage  5 лет назад

      Thank you Denise. Rewiring machines is can be labor intensive and I have not done a series on this. The power cord/plug can be replaced with reproduction new cords. But, the motor could more easily be replaced than rewired although that is also possible. New motors (as long as they have bracket mount holes that match your Necchi bracket), can be installed. Wiring must be done to the plug terminal. I would suggest seeking out someone in your community that has the skills to safely do the work or , there are some Sew_Vac businesses where you might find someone who would rewire it for you. Until then, I would not plug in or use the machine. Once the rewiring is done correctly, these machines make for incredible sewing.

      @VintageSewingMachineGarage  5 лет назад +2

      Hello Matisse and thank you for writing. Whenever something like this occurs with any machine, its often helpful to do a little troubleshooting. I have noticed over the years that when an issue occurs, its often not a mechanical failure although that can always be a possibility. Try taking a look at my 2 troubleshooting videos and see if any of these things are a source of the problem. I often tell folks to try re-threading the machine both top and bottom as well as changing out the needle. But each of the TROUBLESHOOTING videos I made could possibly be of help to you.

    What is the best vintage machine that can handle thicker leather?? I LOVE these old machines but want to do bags and belts from full grain leather. Thank you for any help!

    • @VintageSewingMachineGarage
      @VintageSewingMachineGarage  5 лет назад +3

      Hello Kelly. Your question is one I get often. Terms such as "Full Grain" and "Top Grain" are often used to describe different areas of a leather hide that are used. What can really impact a sewing machine's capacity for sewing leather is the density which can be impacted by such variables as tanning. For example, some vegetable tanned leathers' can be either soft or very hard (board like). People who create things like gun holsters or book covers use very heavy/dense leathers. Its not just the thickness but the density that matters. It's important to note that most home sewing machines can sew leathers BUT ONLY garment weight leathers that are soft. If you have a sample of leather you want to use, hold it in your hand and wiggle it. It should flap around easily like paper does. If it moves more like cereal box paperboard or stiffer, then its likely your machine cannot pierce it. I would also add that most industrial lock stitch machines cannot sew dense leathers either. Industrial walking foot machines are the most capable for sewing dense, heavy leathers and these are very specialized even for industrial models. But I have had clients sew garment leather and also light weight leather straps for tote bags with success. Its important to use leather tipped needles and an appropriate thread weight. Also, leather can be more difficult for any machine to feed through as you are sewing which is why you sometimes see roller feet installed to assist in smooth feeding.

    Did Necchi use two different types of tension devices on the Necchi esperia?

    • @VintageSewingMachineGarage
      @VintageSewingMachineGarage  5 лет назад

      Hello Jill. Unlike Singer, Necchi changed their upper tension assemblies over time. The first Necchi's sold in North American for home use had a dial that was chrome and had a slide taper or cone shape to it. Then, they used a design such as the one you see on this machine for the BU Nova and BU Mira models. They continued to use this design until introducing machines like the Esperia and Nova models when they shifted again to a white plastic housing that looked like a notched dial. If you google images of these models, you will see how they literally look. I have found for the most part that these tension dials have proven reliable. If I have one that has failed, I seek out a vintage replacement. The only upper tension assemblies that I rebuild are Singer assemblies since they are easy to find parts for and were intentionally designed to be disassembled and repaired instead of removed and replaced as many other brand's tension assemblies were. FYI, I have had decent luck with finding vintage parts on both Ebay and Bonanza.

    • @VintageSewingMachineGarage
      @VintageSewingMachineGarage  6 лет назад

      Hello Dean. Necchi did produce a free arm model off of the flatbed version of the Supernova. It was called the "Nechhi Supernova Automatica Free Arm C model" They were a lot less common given the considerable up-charge from the already premium prices that Necchis commanded when new. There was also the even less commonly available Necchi Lycia 524 Free Arm Model. These models were all metal. The last free arm Necchis made in Italay were the 542 and 544 models. These have platic cam stacks which are vulnerable to cracking so I don't consider those truly "Heirloom Quality" machines though they make beautiful stitches. Any other Necchi Free Arm machines would be Japanese made ZigZag clones. They make nice machines but those are not all metal either. So, the first 2 models I mentioned would be your best bet. They do come up for sale occasionally but not often. Congrats on your other machine finds which sound very nice and mint. Its always wonderful to get them from the original owners or their families.

      Oh yes. People have sewn delicates on machines for generations. The key would be to see if you can lower the feed dogs partially. If not, you can try loosening the pressure on the presser bar which will allow the fabric to feed but with less friction on the fabric.
