I've got aftermarket projectors and have used hid bulbs for a couple of years. One of the ballasts started acting up, so I bought a H11 LED "upgrade" that was considerably more expensive than a replacement HID kit. Right away, there were the same problems you highlighted- no matter how the bulbs were indexed, there were multiple 'hot spots' and 'dead spots' in the beam pattern and the light output was nowhere near what the old HID bulbs had. So, the LEDs were returned and new HIDs are where they belong. On my other car with H4 bulbs, the LEDs work great and HIDs are horrible, so you just have to try both and see what works best for your situation.
I have always preferred the HIDs over LEDs as it never fails no matter how I clock LEDs I have the dead spot making it harder to see which is the complete opposite of what we are trying to accomplish by upgrading halogen bulbs.. great comparison video!
I use HID headlights in my '14 300C, they seem to work OK. LED lights are very bright but the "dead" spot that many of them have can be a bit difficult to work around. Great video! Thanks man!

They are now making projectors that are specific for LEDs if you wanted to do a custom swap on the projectors. The retrofit source sells some pretty good products. I think it'd be pretty cool to see a custom headlight mod video from you because you're fairly skilled with a lot of these tasks and by the looks of that headlight housing it'd be really easy plus we could get to see a comparison for the new led projectors vs the old HID projectors, you could even add some nice custom halos, etched lenses and such. Much harder but well worth the work would be a dual Bixenon projector integration into the dakota headlight housings you have as the ebay projector headlights for the dakota are subpar at best I think custom ones would give you better light output than most vehicles but again this would be a lot of work, planning and wiring though it might work better with the new hellcat swap as the charger and challenger had projectors.
imo the good ol HID xenon is still better, but LED is catching up. I just found HID is brighter, throws light much further away onto the road and its wider too. Yes LED still bright in fact if you look at them HID and LED side by side they looks almost identical, you just need to remember you need to also look at the road and check the light output to make a better observation. I do most of night time driving on the country side recently due to work and I found HID works way better, it really lights up the road so much better. with LED is tricky sometimes it works with projector sometimes it doesnt, and sometimes they work better with reflector headlights and so on. with HID they are meant to be inside projector housing also they are omni directional , while LED is bi directional that's why you can have dead spot with LED.
i got the s-v.4 and they work better than i expected, clocked them at 3 and 9, they do have a vertical dead spot, but i didnt notice it when adjusting the height. also i wanted more of a plug and play vs having a ballast. also i can see so much better going down the road at night. good video showing both and comparing them side by side

I've also heard that 55w runs too hot that it actually melts the reflectors on their projectors; have you experienced anything like that?
Yup! You got it! Halogen projectors are made to accept normal LEDS. Meanwhile, HID projectors need a specific style of LED. Same with reflector bowls need a specific style of LED.
all boils down to what you already got and what amount of trouble you're willing to go to. for me, i'd just go with the plug & play led. those dead spots aren't major. but since he's already got the old hid kit, he may as well go with it. beyond that, i don't think this is one of those channels that run the full gamut of all configurations to find the best of the best

Nice with HID'S, do you think it has something to do with the model year of your truck? I installed Sealight LED's on my 2020 5th Gen 2500, no dead space. Previous lights were halogen bulbs from factory.
Depends if your truck has projectors or are reflector housings. If it’s projector take a piece of paper and put it in front and I bet you’ll see dead spots
They worked for about 2 weeks each time. Apparently doing that obd2 app and tell the computer to accept them is how to prevent it. I ended up using the led fog light assemblies he put in on a recent video and for the headlights I put in the sylvania extreme white bulbs and it don’t trigger the computer and still gives the white look

For some reason this video popped up to me...so I watched it about halfway through...the "beam pattern test" with putting a sheet of paper right to the headlight had me dying of laughter :D ... dude, you're litteraly filming this in a garage...backout that truck, point it toward the garage, close the garage door and check the pattern on the door. I bet you will see that the LEDs are actually working just fine, if not better than HIDs. And the "blind spot", that's because you got some garbage LEDs man...try S.V4 or something from GTR lighting - clock it like a normal human being - 3&9 (I have no idea where you got the idea of 12&6 in the previous video), and you can start throwing out all the HID bubls and ballasts to the trash. But then, yeah, looks like you're selling them...that will be hard to move on from...
You have the wrong kind of led headlights for one no wonder u have dark spots go on Amazon and type audew led its a true led bulb that is wrapped the whole way around with leds I have them in my ram there crazy bright they make hid bulbs look like weak sauce for sure
The led still won't match the hid in brightness. I've done it. I've put a 55w led in and compared to a 45w hid. The hid was brighter. By a good margin too. Those audew bulbs are only rated at like 30-35 watts anyway. On top of that, led lose efficiency over time. It's not uncommon for them to lose 15-20% brightness over 30 minutes or driving due to heat management.

Feel free to send me a set and I'll try them, but the next thing I spend money on is an actual decent set of hid bulb instead of the Amazon specials I'm running now. The Amazon bulbs just aren't quite lined up right and the pattern isn't as crisp as it could be. But they are still brighter than the leds I've used.

Hey John I got the HID kit and I have a 2015 ram 1500 with projector headlights. I got the kid you showed plugged it in to the low beam and it won't turn on sometimes it will flicker but never holds on. I got the resistors and they didn't change it. I finally just ordered this obd2 port and got the alpha app. Do you think this will make it turn on, someone please help it's been very stressful trying to figure out. Also the hid will work in my high beam just not the low beam projector. Can I use both at the same time also ?
Did you get it fixed? I’m having the same issue….
@@nicholascollins4055 for some reason 15’s got 9012s not 9005s make sure you get the right ones I ordered the HID bulbs suggested but decided to return them and get regular halogens as the problems that come with converting them are too much.
I ordered the same HID in the video/link in description and they burnt out in less than 6 months do you have any other recommendations?
I installed LED's in projector headlights, and I can only see 2 seconds ahead, though the beam is bright for that short distance. Flick the high beam and I can provide light for an entire city! What gives?
Nice with HID'S, do you think it has something to do with the model year of your truck? I installed Sealight LED's on my 2020 5th Gen 2500, no dead space. Previous lights were halogen bulbs from factory.
Depends if your truck has projectors or are reflector housings. If it’s projector take a piece of paper and put it in front and I bet you’ll see dead spots
So I bought the same brand of HID but does anyone know why these won't stay on? They turn on for maybe 1 minute than shut off?
I bought the same kit as you three times. They keep dying on me and I was using the canbus wires
How long did you get out of yours? I put a set on mine on December 6th and they stopped last night.
HID’s are superior. I have GTR 5000k bulbs and Hylux 35w ballasts in my Ram. Love them like crazy
I dont understand why there is no cut off. Specially projector headlamps. Hmmm. There is something weong with that LED.
by the way im using a XHP70 led from china and its good
LED swap on all exterior lights was the first thing I did to my 2019 1500 Classic. Next thing i did was regret it from all the "light out" codes I get. Not interested in installing all the resistors.
Alfaobd made them all disappear on my 19 classic.
Any reason you go with 9005 vs 9012 (HIR2) for low beams? Does it matter?
I'm wondering the same thing.
Dont forget the HID fluid
LEDs are far superior. But they need to be installed at 12 and 6. I have them in my wife’s 13 Explorer and my 12 class A MH both have projector lenses. The light output is great. No dead spots and no blinding oncoming cars. Curious to know where the LED sits in relation to the filament on a halogen bulb?
wrong 9 and 3 i have tried done many tests
Damn wang, now try the correct orientation and see BETTER results than you think you have.
@@apossol08he is talking about the position of the housing where the led chip is attached and it should be 12 - 6 position... Once its on a 12 to 6 position, the led chip itself is on a 9 to 3 orientation
I build my own headlights with 4 hi/low beam projectors. Don't use LEDs,.. hids are way so much better and focus right on the center of the projector, I'm replacing my 2.5 hi/low projectors to a 3" I'm having 4 with 8k hids plus led fog lights....
Your Amazon Links come back with "Page Not found" Are you still associated with this?
I instaled hid lights on at Toyota and i think they have 2 hot 🥵 to make the car turn on fire 🔥 that that’s posible to make yuo car on fire i think
should have used products offered by Headlight Revolution, they are not cheep. GTR-Lighting and MORIMOTO 2STROKE,
Headlight revolution is a joke as for reviews and stuff, for that reason, I won't buy their stuff. My go to source for lighting products has been www.thelightingguru.net
The owner has literally walked me through a retrofit, put a complete parts lost together and still offers tons of advice after the fact. He sells the same stuff hr does but doesn't offer the bogus reviews the guys at headlight revolution do to try and peddle their products.
*VIDEOS LIKE THIS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE PROBLEM! People have put LEDS in reflectors not made for them or used LEDS in projectors, NOT MADE FOR THEM! There are projectors specifically for Halogen and HID! LEDS are made in different specs for Reflectors, Halogen projectors or HID projectors!!!*
There are specifically made LED Projectors but they are a whole package built together. Meaning non replaceable led bulbs.
Hi John love your video just wondering did you install a hid harness or did you just plug the ballast into the factory plug any flickering on the headlights
HID outshines all LED bulbs in a projector headlight. Period!!!
Hid wins again 😏👉🏼 flawless victory lol
I bet money on the gtr ultra bulbs
Hid better for projectors
Go with gtr ultra 2 led trust me
All I've owed was mopar. And I've done evey headlight upgrade
No thanks. You clearly didn’t watch the whole video 🤦♂️
@@BoostedMotorsports I did. But ur not using gtr bulbs ur using auxito or we
@@BoostedMotorsports just trying to help I spent more than $2k on hid and led. And have receipts to prove. Had them in every one of my vehicles
I was one of those guys that never wanted led. Always wanted hid 55watt. But gtr had changed my mind
HID
How are you gonna put the LED om the highbeam??? If the truck is high and low in one bulb lol goes to show how little you know about lights
Two separate bulbs for high and low on these headlights bud
It’s a ram there 2 bulbs 😉
But then, yeah, looks like you're selling them...that will be hard to move on from...
watch the whole video, then comment
I did...doesn't change a thing about what I'm writing about.
@@hunterdan2002 buy a set and see the difference there crazy bright and the led bulbs out last a hid bulbs no doubt. I also have them in my kia Optima it has projector lights and instead of judging buy a pair from Amazon they have great reviews compared to a hid bulb
@@joshuaknows8273 I've thrown several types of led bulbs in projector housings and none of them have been brighter than the hid bulbs. Just tried a set the other day, put them in, compared them to the hid and took them right back out and sent them back to Amazon. The hid was simply brighter.
There are way better led bulbs out there
HID's are awesome as long as they don't burn the reflective coating off the projector bowls, Stupid fucking Camaro.....
Hid not even close
Wow the new ballast boxes are way way smaller than the ones I bought back in 2001
Hey this is Winston and I would love to talk more about the hid kit can I email you?
