While I do like GX, I have to agree. I don't remember them, at any point, talking about the genuine charm the writing has, but I do remember one of them mentioning how the overarching story was (don't remember the exact words so I'll just put something that has a similar meaning) unique, when the story is really just the junk food of fantasy plots. My guess is because they grew up with the original Dragon Quest games, they don't have a strong ability to differentiate between what's part of the Dragon Quest name and what's actually good, ex: some bosses suck, but that's a jrpg tradition vs. You can do good things for the world that aren't part of side quests

In this regard Dragon Quest should learn from games in Growlanser and Langrisser series. Neverthless DQ is a great game with its flaws.
