Shokudo (食堂, shokudō) are casual restaurants or cafeterias that serve a variety of inexpensive Japanese dishes. Many of them are mom-and-pop, hole-in-the-wall type restaurants where the locals eat. They are numerous across Japan in urban centers and on the countryside.
**Apologies for not adding the prices. I'm currently on family business in USA.

Today is the 7th anniversary of my fathers passing, being able to watch Eric Mealtime has really allowed me to calm my anxiety. He was a "steak and potatoes" kinda guy, and always liked to tease me when I'd eat things like sushi or anything outside the norm. Miss you, Dad!
😢happy death day!
Sorry for your loss 🙏🙏
@@jeremyp3729how insensitive! It's an anniversary not "death day"
First let me say how sorry I am for your loss. I lost my mom 16 years and it is hard but they live on in our memories and in us. As far as the video, I appreciate how much you have to eat each time for your viewers! I do enjoy seeing all the foods and options and I hope I make it to Japan one day.
C'mon Eric, if I can enjoy natto, you can too! I don't know how or when I acquired the taste for it, but I bought it by accident one day and immediately liked it. It wasn't what I was expecting, but I now buy it whenever it's available at my local Asian market. It sells out fast too.
I'd enjoy the cafeteria style eatery; very casual, many options.
Cheers from 🇨🇦
You're very good. I can't get past the texture xD
These are my favourite kind of videos! Proper Japanese dining experiences!
Japan makes cheap cafeteria food look and taste good. Bravo!
Seeing these kind of little restaurants brings me joy! I love seeing these little restaurants.
Out of all Japanese food videos, yours are always educating and exciting to watch. Love from Sweden 🇸🇪
Thank U so much Sweden! 💛💚💙
Love learning about the food and culture
Things will get better.
Very cool video! Great job of showing local business support. I appreciate your attempt of eating stinky beans. It was a wonderful example showing that we should try foods that we may not think we like, and we may be surprised. As always, looking forward to the next adventure. 😊
Today would have been my Father´s 94´th birthday... he passed one year ago. We lived in Japan in the early ´80´s. He was such an adventurous foodie. Miss him everyday. Our family loved Tokyo! This meal looks fantastic...
I appreciate that you are still uploading through all you are going through. I hope all is well with you. GET SOME!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know how he does it! I was an absolute wreck after my dad passed away. Grief is an awful thing, if not treated can be crippling, although I bet the Chef is taking good care of everyone.
what happened?
I appreciate the old-school cafeteria style convenience of this type of eatery!
The price point is a big bonus, too!
Thank you for this video!
I'm with you. Mackerel are a darker, oilier fleshed fish and full of flavor. Glad you gave us this insight into typical dining dishes. If Japan has comfort food, this would be it
Another wonderful show. Some of the items I probably couldn’t eat, but it’s interesting to watch. 6 out of 6
You can always tell when Eric is in northern Japan by the way the lights strobe in the videos ;p Northern Japan uses 50hz in its electricity grid and if your camera's shutter speeds aren't calibrated properly they'll make the lights flash as they'll be out of sync. It didn't affect how wonderful this meal was though! It looks incredible! Thank you for sharing!
Love to watch these places... happy you film all sorts of Japanese restaurants.
Very cool vid! I really enjoyed the totally different atmosphere and it definitely makes me happy to hear that such quality food is open for 24 hours everyday! I'd love for something like this to be close to me.
When you start the video off with fried Mackerel even before the vlog is over, I have to say great video. What a meal.
I love the variety of different restaurants and cuisines you try, not just vending machines or bento boxes. It helps give us a good glimpse of what exists in Japan.
A lot of us love these kind of videos. I’m glad you do them and don’t feel the need to do a viral video every time. The big cam is LIT!!
Love seeing a local little place like this!
If Mega did a food review alone, you know it can be called Mega-meal time. 😅
All the best
Thanks for showcasing this place. Made it all the way to the end.
As a mother of 1 son, and the aunt who takes her nephew out a lot, I LOVE cafeterias! Wish America was not losing so many! Eat on friend.
I feel ya! Love cafeteria food in Japan ✔💯👅
Whenever I see 1 of your videos that's the first 1 I have to watch. I love the way you present the meals especially when you have your sons but that's another story. I just love everything about your channel when I discovered you I can't get enough. Keep up the good work and keep up the good spirits. GET SOME!!!!!!! 😀😁
I love watching the videos I have learned so much about the different foods Every time I go to a Japanese restaurant I try a new food.
This is my idea of a great economical place to dine, so much variety for a great price! If only I could get such a great meal here!
30:43 one of the things on my bucket list is the trade sushi for the first time in my life in Japan, Tokyo . And now that I work for a Japanese company, my dreams is that much closer. I have a lot of projects I want to work on and it’s gonna save the company millions and millions of dollars. I plan on being a manager Sommeday :)
Aloha from Hawaii! My wife and I have been watching your videos for a year or so. We enjoy them very much. We watch several channels from Japan that feature food. I find the vending machine videos interesting. I like the family owned restaurants, where the prices are reasonable. They serve good everyday dishes. We will be leaving at the end of the month visiting my mother-in law. Mahalo for all your work on the videos.
First attempt for a snack pack. Always love watching these feast videos during lunch.
Everything looks great. Man! Love the atmosphere of Japan. Love the channel
You can't beat a cheap great meal! nice find Eric!
Honestly all of that food looks great. I would love to hang out at a place like that and just relax. Seems like a nice experience.
So glad to see you! Everything looked so good!!!!
Grab and go cafeteria style restaurants are so efficient. I like one, because to the many options. Glad you found and showed us this place.
I like how you always explain each dish. It’s so helpful. I’ve been trying new things now at our favourite Japanese restaurant here in Canada. Some are good, some not lol 🤷🏻♀️
Eric’s facial expressions eating the sardine was epic!!
Was it? Thanks! ✔💯🏄
You mentioned burdock. In the UK 🇬🇧 one of our favourite drinks (especially from childhood) is Dandelion and Burdock fizzy pop (soda) it's delightful and I'll send it some if I can find your address, although I'm only on RUclips. Not Instagram xx
Love family dining. Always good food and great prices
The fish ofc was my favorite part. Looked wonderful!
I love how they do their advertising on that board outside. 👏
Agedashi tofu is one of my favorite Japanese dishes!
always love the tour of the different restaurants. 😍
You should do a picnic episode with all different types of picnic foods
Another great video Eric and reasonable prices and a great selection of different types of food keep it up
Loved this video and the prices are awesome.
Those kinds of places are often the best. The old familiar, comfort food-type places, y'know? I'm sure they have many loyal customers.
Very interesting type of restaurant. Much different from typical cafeteria style places in the states. Looks amazing. Self-made sour is a new one for me too!
Omg the fermented beans and eggs kill me!! Lol
It's amazing how many different types of food places with different ways to order there are in japan
I like crispy, crunchy textures, I really don’t think I could do the Nato and raw egg combo but I’m proud of you for keeping on trying
The mackerel looked great! The sardines not so much 😂
Truly loved all your honesty in this video. I feel like you were expressive in your dislikes more than normally. 👏🏻👏🏻
Now that’s a selection! What an awesome variety.
Missing your pop for you too. I miss my dad so much. Eat well, live well, surf well for him.
Cheap eats and good company can’t go wrong!
That is the type of place I would like to visit when I come to Japan
nice place to bring the family for affordable dining.
Another great video its amazing seeing all the different foods definitely enjoy your videos its nice that you order a bunch of different items
Looks like a great place! So many options for such good prices.
Great video! I loved the variety of options at this restaurant. Love a cafeteria!
Love saba cooked in mirin, soy sauce, sugar, ginger & umeboshi! Yummy💕💕
Thank you the wonderful experience and another great video. 🫶🏼🫶🏼 from Wyoming
One of everything is always a temptation... loved the menu
Wonderfully casual meal. Thanks Eric.
So interesting seeing most dishes premade and in a cabinet. But love your selection even though you almost bought the whole menu, lol. Great video again, Eric
I love these !
Thanks for a glimpse of Japan out to eat .Sorry for your loss . My mom passed in January @ 86 so I feel you!
Would love a snack pack in little Rhode Island!
Thanks for sharing this eating experience even though you're going through a tough time. My Grandpa who was the father figure in my life passed on July 21st, my deceased mother's birthday. Take care of yourself❤ I love how you always try natto even though you don't like it! I would love to try it but I know it would be tough for me too!
Love the new location this shoot. Variety is the spice of life.
Nice find! 😲👏 When I was a University student, I saw this type of restaurant a lot on Seibu Line in Tokyo. Ima sukunai yo ne. A variety of dishes!😋👍
Yet another totally entertaining and informative video Eric, love what you do my friend. You don't know it but you are currently getting me through a very difficult time in my life with your video's. I am currently nursing and caring for my wife/partner here in South Wales, United Kingdom. She is dying with terminal lung cancer and very ill, but gets some enjoyment when I show her your videos, anything to her from you I am sure would lift her spirits 100% Don't know if you will see this but keep up the great content my friend and keep me fighting on please, love and best wishes to you and yours, take care and enjoy life
I love the idea of being able to pick lots of little dishes by sight via self service. I think I’d end up with way more food than I could handle though.
Kinda reminds me of an old Timey supermarket where you get your food and you can sit down there and eat
Cool video on the cafeteria style. Even relatively cheap food in Japan feels gourmet!
I've always wanted to try natto. I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food. - Cindy
I always get hungry when watching these videos! Good thing I just finished eating a rather large Sandwich (ham, turkey, Cheddar cheese, pickle, mayo, mustard, bread)!
Have been watching episodes for a while would love to see what Snacks you love to eat since everyone in my family has been serving this country in the USA proud to serving in the USA God bless America 🇺🇸
Your videos are so entertaining and fun. I love your expressions, especially when you like a food! Natto is definitely an acquired taste!
I love these kind of videos. Would love to come to Tokyo. Thanks
Best Japan food blogger on the RUclipss! GEEEEET SOME! YUM YUM YUM!
I don't care what anyone thinks. All your videos are interesting and educational.
Thanks for another great video eric. The food looked amazing and made me hungry lol
Looked really good, thanks for taking us.
Thank you for doing a more cafetaria style of place, you so rarely see these on youtube.
Looks great. I need to try it when I visit Japan. Keep up the great work Eric. 👍
Never tired of your video's 😮
Looks awesome ❤
So simply yet so amazing!
No matter how good the rest of the dishes look, the sashimi is always what makes me the hungriest.
His mouth said feast away, his eyes screamed help.😅😅😅😅
Yet another yummy video Eric, Thanks for making them for us to Enjoy.
Pretty cool concept for a restaurant!
Groovy 🎵I’m picking up good vibrations 🎵🎵
These videos never get old, I absolutely love your content!
Eric needs to do anther all Natto dishes episode! I love natto, make it all the time!
Looks delish! Thank you for sharing even though you're going through tough times.❤
I would love to try that Mackerel. Looked so good! Love the video!! Thanks Eric.
Great video Eric, loved the variety of food and of course the lemon sour!
Wow great prices! Love your videos!
I didn't think this would make a 6/6, wow! You're right, wood chop sticks are so much more user friendly than the plastic version.
I had natto before I like mine without raw egg an just a hint of a thick sauce. I prefer lake or river not so much on the ocen flavor the latest one I have try is rock fish it's ok but snapper I enjoy just a bit more 😀✌️❤️
