In my opinion, I think this solo should have won. Yes, Bryce does have incredible chops and does and excellent job demonstrating that, but his solo is just like all other snare solos out there, a bunch of crazy stuff and then a big rim shot. This guy demonstrated his creative abilities as a snare player, along with demonstrating excellent chops and technique. I could actually remember some of the stuff in this solo after he played it. Very well done.
@@isaacpham499 you know most of the grips snare players have will destroy their hands and wrist because they barely use their fingers. I think they should teach them technique at the beginning and its bullshit how they say they focus more on musicality all you need to do is teach the line the grip for a day and let them get used to it. It's not that hard to get used to a new grip and of it is for them then wow
Gabriel {BYOS} I can guarantee you Paul Rennick and his staff teach technique. I can also guarantee you their grip won’t “destroy their hands,” especially given that the way Paul’s groups drum relies on the resonance of the stick, constant motion, and other incredibly conscious drumming fundamentals that ensure relaxation and minimal strain from the players. If anyone is destroying their hands, see the obnoxiously sticky and harsh approach nearly every other group plays, especially at the low end. If you want to see Paul talk about technique, there are videos of him demonstrating the approach and the thought process behind it. To say Paul doesn’t teach technique is almost as erroneous as claiming their approach harms the players. I’ve heard many ridiculous claims about Paul’s approach, but none as outrageous as the players being harmed by the technique.
I personally think this should’ve been a tie between Bryce and Ryan, but I personally like seeing Chops. I’ve noticed people who play theses really tasty/creative solos never make the top 5 so displaying your chops is what you have to do. I wish we could do both honestly
I don't get this solo. Why does it seem like the time signature is in 13/4, then 7/16, jumping to 47/32 in some spots? It sounds like someone on drumset trying to play a groove when they don't have any experience
While Bryce's solo was probably more technically challenging, this one is so much more enjoyable from a viewer's standpoint. I enjoy watching Bryce's solo in that I can appreciate the difficulty and technical nuance of his solo, but not so much because I like the way it sounds. I enjoy watching this one because I like the writing and sounds being produced, and it just flows a little better in my mind.
@@officialnovadrome I understand that, and I'm not arguing with Bryce's win because I think it was absolutely deserved. I just personally enjoy listening this one more, and that's nothing more than my own opinion.
At the end he hits the rime really hard. It sounds like a gun shot I love the marching snare drum the rime shots and all the sounds of a marching snare drum
ThunderAnt The trad is something you'll have to develop on your own. I almost had a similar problem when I was in high school. Matched is super important for developing killer trad tho.
bruh he gave that drum a whole spanking at the end
Yo I'm totally okay with this recent trend of musicality in top placings

100% agree. SCV doesnt teach technique which bothers me. Nice to see some technique aside with some creativity.
James P. Confident rennick, along with most of the SCV staff care more about sound quality than they do technique.

nothing beats how cool BD 17 snares play
Someone needs to sample 1:34 this is so musical dear lord
it's a 2/3 poly rhythm just with weird sticking.
@NPC 1984 Thanks :)
@NPC 1984 Lol , you're funny.
@NPC 1984 Man, you seriously need some help. First your sarcasm was obvious, and horrid, second now you're being annoying and honestly childish.
@NPC 1984 it's a public website. Hate to hit with a reality check but you don't own the video nor do you own the website.
Haven't seen an ending to a solo this cool since Drew Guy 2010! Amazing stuff!
2:08 "mmm... t a s t y"

That boy spankin that drum like it just shit in his fiji water.
Definitely should've won! The control is so consistent! Also an extremely musical solo!
Chase Manhart Bryce is pretty insane though, you have to admit
Ekodevil there’s more to drumming than being “insane.” People just write hard solos for the sake of being hard, without trying to be musical.
Kaamel Mathis tots galore
A STATEMENT HAS BEEN MADE! I hear you sir!!!

well the judges go based off of technique, difficulty, how well the piece is executed, mistakes, all that

@kielee dowell I say this as a drumline member myself, but I agree that to a general audience this would be more appealing
@@ericnunnellee6024 ah my bad
I love this solo. The only reason it wasn't first was probably because of the amount of ticks.
Liam umm what ticks?
chase2208 im assuming his sticks hitting each other or anything of that sort
chase2208 He dropped a stick at 2:57
Edit: I know it was a trick haha
DatGuyWithNoName he threw the stick away that wasnt a drop
honestly I don't think that's why, SVC is just better musically that's why they won drums and continue to win drums year after year
his trad finger/thumb control is insane
2:48 Holy
DatGuyWithNoName dude I see you on the comment sections an all of the drumming vids across youtube
He’s like the Justin Y. of drums
I appreciate the quality. You can see how wet his chops are
mmmmm juicy
I’m over here like wow ooooin and aaaaahin how the fuck this ain’t win!?! He is ON IT with those pings, clean and crisp with the timing
At the end he hits the rime really hard. It sounds like a gun shot I love the marching snare drum the rime shots and all the sounds of a marching snare drum
What's the trick to writing solos
Ethan Grubb Be musical, technical, difficult, but fun.
Maybe start simple and build from there
I dont know what it is about the 35-40 second lick that just gets me every time
Thank you for uploading this! I was so excited to see this performance
The musicality in this definitely outshines the 1st place slot. Should've won! Ryan you're an inspiration!
I like this one much better than Bryce’s this year.
Amen
@2:22 reminds me of him with Rhythm X 2013. I wonder if that's homage to way back then.
Excellent beautiful amazing sublime 🎼 🥁 💫🙏💫🎶🎵
Ryan's awesome, he's come in to work on visuals for our indoor drumline group twice. Cool guy
So musical. Beautiful.
He marched Blue Coats 2014 I'm so jealous
@ 0:47 dose anyone know the name to that trick
continuous thumb roll/pizza tossing (if you toss the stick up in the air afterwards).
Dude has a great left hand. perfect ending!
Lol he used to go to my high school he's a tech for our marching band now 😂
acaringxPPTYx what high school?
FishingTexas247 he currently is the percussion tech at lebanon high school in cincinnati. i just saw him at our recent state competition
0:05 when you stub your toe
Brandon olander tribute...
He spanked that thing at the end 😂
Wow, it's amazing how fast the human hands can move. I'm a snare and my hands can only move 1/2 of that speed.
Jalon Richardson just lots practice is all it takes, not even hard. Jk. It's hard as shit
Wow, perfect rim shots!!
Who knew that Chris Traeger was able to play the marching snare?!😂😂😂
who was 1st??
Bryce Gardner
nice!
I can do that... hold my beer
Peyton Graf bruh I’ve been waiting for this vid for a year now
@@garetwilliams6011 Yeah same
I would do anything to play on a system blue drum
Ethan Grubb duuuude I went to a BD rehearsal a week before championships, and I got to just touch a snare drum and even that was so satisfying 😂
U the one who said that on michaels tenor solo too lol
Go to PASIC in Indianapolis next year, if you volunteer you get a 4 day pass for free
There were so at dayton wgi champs but they put one of those mute pad things on like after the first or second day. There were tenors also
just cough up $800 and you can bro! 😅
Magic thumb roll
does anybody know what sticks he is using
John Abarca I'm guessing Promark TXDC17W
John Abarca BD uses dc50s
Why would bd use the dc50s over scott johnsons signed sticks
buttermantis C Corps uses TXDC51W, Blue Devils B uses the DC50’s, their world class corps used the TXDC17W
Sage Hebson I know this is late but b corps used 17s too that year
is there sheet music for this?
WHY DID HE LEAVE BLUECOATS!!!!
Ben Wilson championships my dude
Probably his favorite corps
Ben Wilson He's a boss in this Drum Corps
Medals and to get a west side perspective of drumming versus east which coats is primarily east.
Ben Wilson a snare drummer will do anything to play on system blue drums
Mm. Tasty.
haha, great job! :-)
I would choose this as my solo but I can't play tradish bcuz high school :(((
ThunderAnt See if you can get lessons from a nearby University, drum corps, or a guru like this dude.
UltraPercussion I mean they won't let me :(
ThunderAnt The trad is something you'll have to develop on your own. I almost had a similar problem when I was in high school. Matched is super important for developing killer trad tho.
