I (Russ) would have loved to have stumbled across Aesop Rock on Napster. To be honest, I'm shocked that I didn't! I am so glad Lauren found him though and glad to hear so many others dig the guy.
22 years now listening to Aesop Rock. It’s been amazing following his career from Labor Days to Tech Solutions, hard to think of many rappers or artists in general making unique and interesting projects for over 2 decades.
We've said something similar to a few others, but we mean it: we're VERY thankful that long time fans are liking what we had to say. We're also super stoked to get more suggestions from people in the know. Thank you VERY much :)
I believe I discovered him about 15 years ago but I can't even remember how, which is pretty wild considering he's my GOAT. He doesn't have much mainstream exposure, so just like you I could have easily missed out on him. You should definitely check out the Hail Mary Mallon - Bestiary album if you haven't already. It features Aesop Rock alongside Rob Sonic and DJ Big Whiz, and it might even be my favorite of his.
I've said this to a few others: but we're happy that his long time fans are digging that we just now found him. We have a LOT more to listen to from him and we both genuinely love what we've heard so far.

As lifelong Weird Al fans, we totally agree that dorks will change your life! haha. We are so glad that many of Aesop's long time fans are digging what we had to say as new fans. You and a few others gave us some homework, which we love :)
I love Aes and his discography, he's been putting out pure heat since day one! Those tracks are definitely good intro tracks, so I'll softball a few more that are easy to digest because, this guy gets DENSE with the lyrics. No Regrets, Pigs, Grace, Lazy Eye, The Sea, Abandoned Malls
We've been happy to see so many long time fans digging that we just now found him. Thanks for leaving a comment and for suggesting more songs for us. The guy is just SO talented. We're very happy we (finally) found him.
@@InfectiousGroovePodcast as a fan, we welcome you into the fold! If you choose to continue your musical journey, you'll not want for content! His discography is brilliant, dynamic and never hits a lull once! The truest 🐐
Like others, I’ve followed Aesop Rock for years. I have to agree with other comments and also default to some of the first tracks I heard by him. Daylight (first track ever heard) No Regrets Dorks Rings And, yes, L-L Larry is awesome! Agency! Empowerment! Humor! Amazing Beats! And then there are all the side projects from Hail Mary Mallon to Malibu Ken to Lice that are both fascinating and strange
I’m so happy to see so many people enjoying Aesop Rock recently. So many RUclipsrs have been discovering him and are now huge fans, and it feels great to know I wasn’t crazy for all these years. Dude is a legend, and about the only other one I believe to have been on his level was Eyedea
@@InfectiousGroovePodcast So happy to see Mystery Fish on there. Not always a fave for most but it's probably in my top 5 of all Aes. If you haven't gotten to it yet, make sure you give "Gopher Guts" a listen (from Skelethon). Aes at his most raw and shockingly intelligible. Keep rocking, and stay true like a wolf wearing wolf pants!
Been rocking with Aes since I met him when he released bazooka tooth. Nice list, I would love to see y’all do a deep dive of Aes. My 5 would be ( not in any particular order) Mars Attacks (bazooka tooth) Dog at the Door ( Spirit World Field Guide) That is Not a Wizard ( Garbology ) None Shall Pass ( None Shall Pass) Get Out of the Car ( the impossible kid)
Glad you dug our list and thank you for yours. We'd love to do a deep dive too. We have it on our list of things to get to and we hope to follow through sooner than later :)
To expand a little further, y’all should check out DJ Shadow’s work, from the early EPs to his Endtroducing album (also a Guinness World Record holder since the ENTIRE album is a beautiful pastiche of sampling); from Private Press to the two Mountain albums; from the one UNKLE album Shadow did (Psyence Fiction) to his newest work… He is always pushing himself and his music forward so each album is as he has indicated a glimpse into what is into, inspired by, and happening at those moments of his life. Without lyrics: Organ Grinder High Noon Midnight in a Perfect World Witches vs Warlocks Ghost Town With lyrics: Rocket Fuel Nobody Speak 3 Freaks But the best work is his live material & the first two are some of his best work as they show both his ability as a digger, a DJ, a performer, and a writer/producer: Brainfreeze (performed w/ Cut Chemist, all 45s on five turntables; the first of three projects but the best) Live in Manchester: The Mountain has Fallen (showcasing his ability to make work from different points in time blend together in unexpected and amazing ways) and floating around are other live albums and many bootlegs of live shows from the past 25 years
Oooo, you are speaking my (Russ) language! I grew up in Detroit so I used to go to DJ sets alllll the time. I'm'a look into everything you shared, thanks!
@nowlistenallison 0 seconds ago As far as I'm aware, Aes has always held all his songs are his children and he'd be hard-pressed to choose favorites - there was a time I heard he said he thinks "Pigs" is tops and that "Homemade Mummy" was a go-to for pulling out on the fly. I think a tip for finding the appreciation could be had in hearing this artist does not feel his work is abstract; he's described crafting a track like painting a picture and in his mind the goal is pinning down details in hyper-realistic detail. I could wax on and off and back on again discussing my concerning level of interest in Ian Matthias Bavitz (check the CBGB's women's room graffiti!) and while that high praise is absolutely earned imho, you might never hear the end of it, so! Here are a few I think possess that je ne sais quois: Ruby '81 Cat Food Spare a Match Acid King (Malibu Ken track) Gauze
Interesting note, the Wheatus song "Teenage Dirtbag" is a response to the same event as "Acid King" (and "Catacomb Kids"), see: Ricky Kasso - this is also an inspiration in Stranger Things S4, particularly with the Eddie Munson character (the monster he fears people will see him as).
Andre 3000 said he stopped rapping cause he can’t keep “hip” anymore and Aes is the same age but never raps about “cool” things, it’s all mental health or travel or real life events or memories
Have you heard #AesopRock ? If not, you should go listen now!
As an old head, Aesop Rock was a classic Napster find. Along with Atmosphere, Sage Francis and Jedi Mind Tricks. This was beautiful!

@@InfectiousGroovePodcast ya he’s stopped rapping and put out an album of him playing the flute? or some wind instrument
