    This is who Soundgarden were: disjointed time signatures, Chris’s voice, lyrics of passion, depression & despair.

    Words you say
    Never seem to live up to the ones inside your head
    The lives we make
    Never seem to ever get us anywhere but dead....
    Love Chris.. so very sadly missed!! He can do no wrong in my eyes!!

    "I appreciate the song more than I like it." Well said, Nick. The music (and video) seemed as unsettled as his state of mind, and eerily foreshadowed the manner of his death years later.

  • @crowfeedreactions
    @crowfeedreactions 5 месяцев назад +4

    The lyrics make this song. To admit to yourself that you're a liar... few men have that sort of bravery. The vocal performance is astonishing. I'm a fan of "build-up" songs and this is one of those and I think it's effective. The different time signature is interesting and it is unsettling, as was noted, and that was almost certainly intentional. Great track off that album.

    This has been my favorite Soundgarden song since Superunknown was released. I dealt with social anxiety and it really does give you the feeling that you never have success when dealing with others, even if they felt you did great or got a win. Every day is just so self-critical until you overcome it.

    Love this song! The layers of guitar, and lead and backing vocals on top of the plodding (in a good way) bass and drums is transcendent.
    Sorry you guys didn't see the dark beauty and prog-grunge-metal complexity of it. I guess it isn't for everyone but it is a masterpiece of 90s hard rock to those it hits with.

    I'm sure everyone ascribes their own meaning to this.. at the point in my life when I heard it, I felt like it was about being able to ignore all I could see that was wrong in the world and live a shallow, surface based life like all my friends seemed to be signing on to. Could I just work, have kids, wear a golf shirt and drive a mini-van? I'm sure to Chris it had a much more terrifying meaning. RIP and thanks for the music.

    ...but as much as: Superunknown became a commercial breakthrough for the band (and, in many ways,: " '90s music " " (OH yes!))

    I am a HUGE Soundgarden fan. I like grunge and Soundgarden is the best of the genre. Superunknown is a great album. Badmotorfinger is another. This song isn’t my favorite but I certainly like it a lot. I never saw them perform but I did get to see Audioslave. They did some Soundgarden songs, so that was almost as good. Great concert. Chris walked on water in my opinion and his death was hard to take. Yahoo reminded everyone his birthday was the other day and he would have been 60. That’s kind of hard to believe. I was a little sad to see that you guys didn’t like this song so much but thanks for bringing it on.

    Their best song imho, and certainly the best on the album. Like Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell wasn't a ray of sunshine in his lyrics, but this one definitely spoke to my 14 year-old self at the time it was released.

  • @aimfuldrifter
    @aimfuldrifter 6 месяцев назад +4

    I think the song was meant to be disturbing - I mean, come on, most of their songs were/are like this, even Black Hole Sun. I like the flaming guitars, the rhythm feels like 7/8 and the roaring sound of the guitar is great IMO, especially the "sliding" riff. They're breaking the overall, classic rhythm and it's a sensation of someone slowing down the vinyl. Chris sounds more like on Audioslave and I agree with you that he was kinda flat on this one. I mean his performance is strong like it usually is but I just wish he was more subtle/depressive during the verses. Good song but it doesn't bring the sensation like others do. You have to be honest to stay genuine and I appreciate it.

    It's hardcore in every way. It's not yacht rock or karaoke material obviously. I love it for what it is and says as a musician. I don't care for modern computerized music of today but that's to be expected. I was a teenager in the 80's and as result my music tastes are eclectic. I appreciate music on many levels. My age indicates my disinterest in modern music. Just soulless carbon copy music. Boring. Chris Cornell hitting crazy octaves without a dynatune is.........sadly gone.

    In my opinion, it's rubbish, there's no melody, no proper instruments, some kind of incomprehensible strumming on guitars, similar to rock music, actually, like all alternative music, music in the 90s has noticeably gotten worse! Sorry, but this is an honest opinion.

      Huh? How can you say there’s no proper instruments? Are you some kind of classical music elitist like wtf is half of this statement? Most of it isn’t even an opinion it’s just false statements.
      No Melody? Listen to the song theres a melody
      Incomprehensible guitar strumming? It’s pretty easy to follow
      You don’t like it that’s fine and if you can’t explain why you don’t like it that’s also fine but don’t make statements that are easily proven false.
      If you don’t like how it sounds just say that there isn’t always a quantifiable reason to why you don’t like something. Jesus
