I'm so glad that Disney decided against premium access for Soul because it's so awesome that this film is widely available. I absolutely adored this movie, the originality is off the charts. Plus, the themes that it explores with life, death, meaning, the essence of why we're here, it cuts deep. Soul is such a great example of what Pixar is capable of.

I really wonder why they didn’t made a relatable character for adults or teenager earlier. In my opinion it was the fear to upset the younger audiences, what could be the case on this one, despite being relatively funny. This movie is probably the most depressing and mature Pixar film I’ve seen, it gives such a great message to the audience and easy to understand, Jamie Foxx and the voice actor of 22 (forgot her name) did an excellent job in this film, it’s so heart warming and the visuals were amazing in this movie, it felt a much mature version of Inside out and I loved how it’s portrayed from a middle age man trying to find his meaning in life which is jazz, everyone in this world has a meaning and always would have a spark in them you just have to be patient about it, Pixar did such an amazing job on this movie this is coming from a 14 year old kid

    Just watched this tonight.
The story isn't as tight as UP or WALL-E, but damn if its not the most beautify rendered Pixar movie yet. The street scenes and the way they handle light. Its breath taking.
Also, the character design and movement is the next level up.
The last few shots (when they are panning up from New York), brought tears to my eyes with its beauty.
This is animation done with artistry, passion and love.

Yes, the character's motivations weren't on the same scale as in previous offerings (honoring a deceased wife's last wish or rescuing the human race from exile), they were humans doing what humans do.
I also agree that the movie really didn't come into focus until the 3rd act and that there were characters the story probably could have done without, and doing without them, the pacing would have been improved.

I thought Soul was going to be bad, but it was an amazing film. Really shows us that we don't have a purpose, or if we believe we have one, we don't necessarily need to achieve it too be "happy". Sometimes we enjoy life, whether we achieve a purpose or not, without even knowing. Life doesn't change in an instant once a purpose is achieved. There are many ways that someone could interpret the film.

I haven’t written a full in-depth review for a movie in a long time but Soul left me with a lot to say. Let me just get something out of the way first. I was really excited for this movie and went in with high expectations! I love Pixar pretty much all their movies other than a few. I also generally like animation movies because I mostly grew up with them and it’s been cool over the years seeing animation for these movies get better and better! I’m also a big fan of this movie’s director Pete Doctor! The man knows how to make beautiful and compelling movies and stories that are often really emotional! From Up to Inside Out and Monsters Inc. He knows the work and you could argue he perfected it. So I went in into this movie with a lot of high expectations, one of them being that I predicted that Soul may be my favourite movie from the entire year! Cause when I heard about the premise of the movie I was super intrigued and I felt like I resonated with it. I’m happy to say that this is a movie a lot of people will resonate with and connect with and even I resonated with it at some of its messages. Soul for me felt like one of Pixar’s most ambitious films yet. It’s wildly different then what you would expect from a family animated movie. I would argue that this movie is aimed at adults or students who are looking for explanations or purposes In their life. That’s how mature it is, and I think if young kids would watch this movie they wouldn’t like it and it would be far from them being able to understand this story and the messages it presents. This movie is really complex, deep, intimate, personal and unfortunately too complicated for its own good. I personally might have a disadvantage with understanding the story of this movie because I find myself often getting confused and not understanding what the filmmakers and writers of movies want to convey to me. So that might be an issue with me and not the movie’s but, I was pretty confused with the story and everything that is presented. Nonetheless, let me go back on how bold this movie is though because I honestly wasn’t expecting this from Pixar. This movie has a lot of layers it explores, it’s fast-paced at just ninety minutes and wildly different from anything else in its field. So it’s important to give credit where credits due. I didn’t even get started on how breathtaking and incredible the animation for this movie is. I could say so much more on the level of detail Pixar and their entire team put into with there animation for this movie. The movie was also unexpected at times when it gave me vibes from the movie Freaky Friday and how the events from this movie were similar to that movie at parts. It also had great music that it presented, astonishing world-building and well-realized characters that you end up caring for. Overall Soul was one of the most unique movies Pixar has to offer. With a dense and compacted plot and messages that will leave audiences pondering long after its over, humour that works for most of the time, clever dialogue, characters with a lot of personalities and just gorgeous animation makes Soul one of the best movies of the year. Unfortunately for me though I felt like I couldn’t appreciate and grasp all the messages, morals and the overall story that the movie had to offer. That’s alright though because I still had an amazing time with Soul!

This film has meaning for everyone. Every single person can benefit from the messages. Credit for the score also needs to go to Jon Batiste. He wrote original jazz music for a lot of the scenes in New York and it really added a cool atmosphere in conjunction with Reznor and Ross' score.

I was impressed by the editing in this film, you think it's going to go in a specific direction until it makes a sharp left turn. It got me a couple of times of trying to figure out where its headed. Also, Richard Ayaode's performance was outstanding and a big surprise for me.

I wish they had a different ending. I thought they were going to go all the way with it, but then you can see the Disney influence take over.
Wasn't as soulful as I thought it could be.
Into the spiderverse had more soul.
It was still a good film for what it was.
I like the little soul character after the introduction montage.

*Spolier Alert* Honestly I felt similarly about the ending. I feel like the ending should have resulted with him not going back to earth. It felt like that last bit was a little to cheap a way to try to end the movie in a satisfying way. Not to say that the messages weren't powerful, but I feel like the message would really drive home if he had gone to whatever the next life was.

I finished watching the movie and gotta admit,
I adored this movie and even though there is a few similarities compared to Inside Out (which is still my favorite Pixar Movie and Soul now being my close second) like for example, You go into a characters mind and experience what the character is thinking (to some extent) but the main difference with Soul and Inside Out is that Soul has life and death where Inside Out is mostly about emotion (well growth with emotions while being complicated) which is a nice contrast between the two!

I think soul is the single best movie that Pixar has ever created, the movie presents a complex idea a very philosophical idea in a very simplistic way the movie is all about abstract and the very meaning of life and existence itself, this is very complex and sincerely I say it: hats off to both the director and the screenwriter, this movie is a piece of genius!! Thank you Pixar for such movie.

My most awaited film of 2020, and it was everything I expected it to be. It made me laugh, cry (always a benchmark for a solid Pixar movie) and glad to have the gift of life.
But apart from this it's an astounding achievement in animation and imagination. Huge shout out to John Batiste as well as Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross for making this movie sound as lively and poignant as it should. It's hard to explain but Pixar is upping their game with the "texture" of their movies with every outing. Somehow it strikes a unique balance between the visuals seeming stoically "real", and yet maintaining the airiness and lightness of being a "cartoon". One of their best.

I am interested in seeing this movie but just like WW 1984 am not interested in paying for a whole other streaming service where the rest of their content is not to my interest. I already pay for two streaming services, theatre going is not an option where I am and would like to be able to purchase my viewing separate from these platforms. I'm just going to sit it out hopefully will be available to rent as stand alone at some point.

@@AzraelTay I’ve never had much interest in the Disney catalog even as a child. I know it’s weird but a few of us are just not the audience for majority of their offerings. I would like to see this film but I guess they are going for an all or nothing approach. I am happy others are enjoying.

    ***SPOILERS***
I may be in the minority here, but I thought Soul was just alright? As someone who has the same mentality as 22, this film didn't resonate with me as much as I hoped it would. I adored Joe as the main character so I was the hoping for a more well-developed build-up leading up to the third act and the climax to be more focused on him instead of him saving 22. 22 seemed like a such superfluous character. I saw in a tweet that said "Imagine if Soul had replaced Tina Fey's character with Joe's deceased father instead
. The spirit of a man, who only lived and died for his art, coming back to warn his son against repeating his mistakes and to live for more than just that". That would've been very deep and the rift between Joe and his mother would've carried more weight. And having Joe be given another chance at life was a cheap attempt at having a satisfying ending. Even though the film had some very beautiful moments, like the barber shop scene, the scene with Joe and his mother, and him being in the zone, and had stunning animation, I feel like it had so much potential to be better. Great message, mediocre execution. Maybe I'm just too jaded or have been watching too much good anime.

I really enjoyed the film. The animation is gorgeous. The voice acting is so good. So much of this film worked for me. The one exception was the "twist" halfway in, which I wasn't a big fan of. But I did like the representation here and the character designs.

Usually these movies get more in my feels. It was ok. But I think if they had spelled out his spark/purpose at the end then or he had called the one that got away or something it would have been better. Also they didn't show the lesson from the barbershop. That he was so focused on his dreams he was missing out on chance s to really know people he though of as friends like the barber etc.
