So many scammers steal other's info ... Then they come up with all these stories about why they need a deposit... Yes, incorrect English big red flag. I hope you reported this to FB. Thanks for sharing!
Yes. The person who had their ID stolen reported it as well.
its such a sh1ty game fb marketplace glad you dodged it mate 🍺
Me too. Just sad it is such a problem. But it hasn't stopped me from shopping on there since this incident.
Good on you Matt, that could have gone pear shaped 😎🤙🏻
Yep. I was close to leaving a deposit when I saw the licence. But something did not feel right. Especially when I offered to pay the asking price and pick it up and they still wanted a deposit.
Great advice Matty, thank you
No worries. Just thought I would share my experience.
Same situation with rental properties on Facebook atm, asking for a deposit.
Was not aware of that. Thanks for sharing.
I've run into this many times. The way I vet it out is that you can use Google to reverse and look up the photos being used in the ad. Usually, there will he several ads using the same photos. Great job sniffing out the scammer.
They are a good base for a project bike. That was my initial plan, but the Ducati 600 supersport came along.
Occasionally, when I am bored, I actively seek out these scam ads and have a bit of fun before abusing the f*ck out of them :-)
I have done that with other scams, but they were when I was at work. I messed with a scammer for about 6 hours. It was a bit of fun for me. I figured the more time they wasted trying to scam me, was time they were not scamming others.
Well done with the investigation work. Just shows how careful you need to be
It is very sad really. I have sold my last 5 bikes over the internet (buyer had to trust my description). Because of scams like what was on the video, it only makes it harder for honest people trying to sell bikes.
That’s interesting. Makes me wonder if buying a bike interstate from a private seller would be a bad idea. I was looking at a bike in QLD and had done the deal with the owner, organised a company to transfer it to Sydney when the seller got a better offer and cut me out. But if he hadn’t, I was prepared to transfer the money straight to his account. That could have been a costly mistake by me.
@@jeffarnie if you have been in direct contact with the seller. The risk is greatly reduced. I have sold a few bikes to interstate buyers. A bit of due diligence goes a long way. Like I said in the video, if there is an element of urgency to get a deposit from you. You may want to consider it a potential scam.
Hey Matt, almost “got got” myself about 3 months ago, similar circumstance but a ride on John Deere mower. Seller had to move house in next 3 days, there were other people coming and just needed a $500 dollar deposit to hold it till they got home that afternoon before I could look at it. Story fell apart when they clearly didn’t have enough local geographic knowledge. Two days later Facebook blew up with 4 or 5 local people all saying they got scammed. Thanks for raising this so we all think twice and trust our gut feeling a little more.
Always go with your gut. Alot of scammers stories fall apart when you do not go to their "script". Things like questioning the area they are from (weather or local known landmarks) or press them on the vehicle they are trying to sell (items specific to model they are selling). Well done on not getting caught out.
Gday Mat, unfortunately it’s a skill we all require nowadays when looking at buying things. I’ve lost $100 so far in my life and it was a lesson learned quickly to be more vigilant
It is a shame that these things happen. The internet was meant to open up the world for us. Sadly, at times it just gives scammers more opportunities.
Gotta have your wits about you on FBMP… sheesh!
It is becoming all too common. problem is, it is affecting genuine sellers trying to sell stuff at a decent price.
That is pretty wild - I wouldn't have expected someone to go to that much trouble for a scam, impressively evil. Glad you got it sorted and paid attention to your instincts.
Scammers are getting more and more organised. We just need to be vigilant. if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. But it does not hurt to investigate further. I have found some great bargains on marketplace.
Well that was well worth watching.
Thank you. Hope it was helpful.
Lucky you are alert to the scumbags!
I am not the most trusting person at the best of times. So it doesn't take much for me to not trust people I do not know.
Well spotted, Matt. Cheers
Thanks Moz.
English but I had to put on the subtitle.
Not English then
My thick Australian accent does not help. But thanks for watching.
@@RoadsOfOz You do not have a bad accent at all. People, imo, need to listen more.
