- Highgate Cemetery, London - Walking tour of Highgate Cemetery in London. Let's travel to London and let's visit the famous Highgate Cemetery which is a place of burial in north London, England. Opened in 1839, Highgate Cemetery one of London’s most infamous cemeteries, originally opened as one of London's “Magnificent Seven” park cemeteries.
Highgate Cemetery is England's finest Victorian burial ground. It is world famous for its romantic wooded landscape and ivy-clad tombs.
There are approximately 170,000 people buried in around 53,000 graves across the West Cemetery and the East Cemetery at Highgate Cemetery. Highgate Cemetery is notable both for some of the people buried there as well as for its de facto status as a nature reserve. The Cemetery is designated Grade I on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. It is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries in London.
Let's see the tombs scattered all over as nature reclaims itself around them.

I love the stone angels.... They really are beautiful...
Thank you for your comments!!
I've known a few stoned angels in my time . . . Mmmmmm . . . They REALLY are beautiful!
The most beautiful cemetery Ive ever been too..Spent the whole day there and didnt want to leave.
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed the video!! 😊😊😊
So beautiful, I would like to visit daily for months, I love the atmosphere of old cemeteries. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for viewing my videos!!
Someone described the old cemeteries the way I feel. To a sensitive person you feel that these past generations are like us.They Married,, went to church raised children., and lived Christmas and died. In Highgate I especially feel the presence of Dickens, and his Christmas Carol. The many Christmases that those people lived thru, and now silenced..
I sometimes refer to cemeteries as marble orchards of forgotten dreams. Very nice vid.
That has to be one of top three cemeteries ever.
Certainly one of the top three most popular cemeteries to visit in London!! Thank you for watching!
craftmanship on some of these graves are absolutely amazing for the time.....
No computer 3D tech just creative imagination it's deeply awe inspiring ❤️
I long for summer when I hear that bird sing :) nice video Highgate is on my bucket list
+hillena Hello, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!!
+hillena You'll love it!
Thank you for your wonderful and informative comments
Thanks for filming a beautiful historic place. Maybe some day I will get to see it. Love the bird song.
Wonderful video. Highgate is renowned all over the world for it's age, the beauty of it's funerary monuments, and historical significance. In the late 60's-early 70's, it was also the location of multiple reports of "vampire" sightings, and as a result, many trespassers were arrested by police for "staking-out" (pun intended) the place at night, in hopes of catching the undead in the act of coming/going (some reportedly going so far as opening crypts and vandalizing the coffins interred).
As a result, to this day, the people running the cemetery are extremely touchy about the subject, as a friend of mine and her daughter learned when they toured the place. When the daughter asked about the "vampires", my friend told me the tour guide looked as if she'd been slapped in the face with a cold fish, appeared extremely perturbed, paused briefly, ignored the question, and continued on with the tour.
Fascinating place, beautiful scenery, but avoid mention of Prince Dracul and his ilk, or risk incurring the wrath of the tour guides.
+cryptozoo22 Thank you for the information and for your comments!!
You can see part of the cemetery in the Hammer film "Taste the Blood of Dracula" with Sir Christopher Lee
vic i love your commentary and all vids was in munich last year and set for london in a month you rock my friend
Thank you for your wonderful comments my friend!
Thank you for sharing this, really enjoyed it.
Did anyone see the cat at 4:00?
Thank you for watching my videos, this place was full of cats, they were everywhere!
I heard the siren...I need to go back and check for the cats. Is the other side open for tours only or just for general visits.
I can see a white cat at the left corner of the vídeo.
Nice video t'he gravestones look interesting
I wish I was able to visit this while I was in London, but my time was limited. Thank you for making this video, it’s beautiful.
Hi Andrea, thank you for your comments. You can find more recent videos from this historic cemetery on my channel!!
I love the old graveyards - specially this one and pere la chaise....such beauty and peace. Sometimes I wish I was dead. Crazy life.
Hello and thank you for viewing my videos!!
Sr.Vic me encantan sus videos, los cementerios mas famosos del mundo.
Gracias por enseñarnoslo.
Cordial saludo desde Córdoba Argentina.
Hola mi amiga, gracias por ver mis videos !!
Makes you wonder if at night all these angels and sculptures chat at night?
Interesting comment, thank you!
I love old cemeteries
Great places for photos and videos!
I agree it is a good video, this will have historical value in years to come.
Thank you Vic for the early morning stroll I had this morning! One of my favorite authors George Eliot, a/k/a Mary Ann Evans is buried alongside her beloved life partner George Lewes. What a wonderful way to spend eternity in this beautiful place. Thanks again.
Natural video. Thanks a lot
Hello, thank you for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍
Brilliant video Vic, thank you. By the way you could read the inscription on some of the grave-stones after all every one of them tells a story of someone's life.
Hi, I have a newer video from Highgate where I have done exactly that.. thank you for your comments!
I've been to that cemetery..by total freak accident, walking around in London on a mega foggy day, couldn't see 3 meters in front of me and so i couldn't find where i was going on the map..Suddenly there was this cemetery beside me ..and i thought..Oh well what the heck..i'm lost anyway so lets go in here. It was like walking in a horror movie that day, nothing like this, lol.. i was just waiting for Jack the Ripper to appear or at least a really magnificent ghost of someone. After that, i went for a cup of tea.. don't think i've had one since then. ;D)
lol... thank you for sharing this experience of yours with us!!
Very interesting location - really must try to get there at some time. Thanks for posting a great video.
My Grandmother had her funeral here in 1984 when Highate was still dominated by gothic gloom, with weeds and self seeding trees obliterating the tombs. You could see why the 'Hammer' people set some of the Dracula films in Highgate. There's an excellent book by Felix Barker with photography from the late John Gay entitled:" Highgate Cemetery, Victorian Valhalla". The large masonry angel at 9:55 resembles the one on the front cover very closely.
Thanks for uploading such a well-filmed video.
Thanks for the video it was surprisingly different!! Not as well tended as I thought it would be... Still beautiful in a good creepy way!🤔🤗
Surprisingly, they cleaned up the whole place last year, let's see how long it will last all cleaned up..
That was a GREAT video!!! Thank you! I hope one day to visit there. In the meantime, I really enjoyed your video.
Eu gostaria de morar num lugar assim....amo o silêncio e é, num lugar como este que... encontramos nossa essência divina.
Olá, obrigado por esses comentários interessantes !!
Thanks for this video Vic.My mate and me visited in June 2012 and one of the graves you filmed we sat down on and had our lunch.Where this was you had stopped and panned round with your camera and I could see where we sat-you stood right next to it-amazing whats the chance of that eh?We did the the east side at 12am and went to that Egyptian part.it was midnight when we got there and we heard the midnight bells toll-SPOOKY.There was no bad vibe to the place atall, infact it was very peacefull
The silence is Gold from here and for the Eternity !
Wow !! What a beautiful vid ! I what are those houses you see in the background? Man you're lucky I wish I could visits this place !!

Beautiful nostalgia really they must have communities get together clean it up. Because soon all history of peoples names will be forested.
Thank you for your comments and for viewing my videos!!
In 1972 I lived in Balmore St,adjacent to the cemetry, the georgian houses were demolished to build apartments,so called progress.I was 15 back then and frequently walked through the cemetry as a shortcut to parliament hill fields,I vividly remember much neglect and the exposure of human skeletal remains due to collapsed tombs and graves, saddened and shocked I can never erase those images.Highgate is a poignant place of perpetual sleep for those who rest there.
Sooooo beautiful! Reminds me a lot of some of the more hidden cemeteries I've seen here in Ohio. Really, really old with that abandoned feel to it (creeping ivy and master weeds). Lakeview Cemetery near Coventry (OH) has some really nice gravestones....but I'll admit this Highgate one does take the cake. Very nice!
Thank you for your comments and for watching my videos
Have always wanted to visit.
Vic é muito sinistro!! Adorei esse vídeo bjs
Obrigado por comentários!
Here lies circa 154,000 of the greatest people from the greatest race who have or will ever live. They were lucky enough to live at the height of our once great empire and died before the third world came and destroyed what they had built!
Interesting comments, thank you!
Vic,do you know where the victims of Jack The Ripper are buried???
I have not seen anyone mention this.
Sorry James, I have no idea, it would be interesting to find out however...
...different all over the globe....thnX Vic...catch for me the greatest grave flower gardens please:)!!!
I went there twice and miss it
Hello i am Brasil great vídeo 😎🇧🇷
Thank you!
A great video vic lord rest all there souls im feeling a bit better now. And the birds singin so loudly. That u can have great life yet death in a cemetery.
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
My wife, kids and I visited in 1994. I recall that in the new section there was the grave of a girl who died during WWII around 1942-43. On her stone was a very moving poem which I copied down and have it around the house somewhere. I wondered if she was the victim of an aerial bombing, or whether it was natural causes.
+John Thomas I am not sure, I have not seen her grave.. I am going back within the next few weeks and I will look for it.. thank you for viewing my videos!!
Great footage of Highgate. This is awesome!!! Thanks!!
BTW, I just discovered that RUclips has an editing feature that fixes any shaky camera movements. It's like magic. I tried it with one of my own. You can get to it by going to your video, and clicking the "Enhancements" option. From there, click "AutoFix" and "Stabalize" and it will give you a preview so you can decide if you like it better. It made my video look much better. Not a criticism, because you did a great job.
Vic, I'm looking for English cemeteries from the 1500's. Do you know where I would find them on youtube?
No, but I have videotaped a few, type 'vstefanu cemetery england'... Thanks for watching my videos..
Vic Stefanu Thanks Vic, Great videos. I have British roots from Staffordshire. Hope to visit England someday....Cheers from Canada.
+Mark David There is a cemetery on the A-1 I believe north of London on the way to Warwicke on the grounds of an old church where there are graves with markings still discernible to the 12th century. We stopped there in 1986. I'm sorry that's all I can remember.
High Gate Cemetery looks so beautiful and so peaceful and I would love to pay a visit to it one day
How much would it cost me to go on one of the tours Vic Stefanu and how long does the tour go on for if you don't mind me asking
Hammer House of Horror shot some of their films in the 'Circle of Lebanon' and 'Egyptian Avenue' - both spectacular aspects of Highgate's West side. There were also several tombs broken into (back in the seventies) I believe and some regrettably bad treatment of the bodies concerned, for which someone went to jail.
It's in Felix Barker's book about the Cemetery, which I can thoroughly recommend for the supporting photography alone.
I'd love a close up of old headstones to read.
I have another video from Highgate, of the famous people buried there..
scarey looking wonder if it has any ghosts, great video thanks
Thank you for your comments and for watching my videos, please subscribe to my channel for more exciting videos from around the world
I have never heard any ghosts stories about Highgate (and have never seen any), but again, who knows, there may be some stories around from other people..
that was pretty spooky when you see that little headless statue and hear a child calling for its mummy.makes me feel sad to think of the soul of a lost child endlessly looking for it's mummy : {
You are right, thank you for your comments!
Good video!
Thank you for the historical info. Cryptozoo22!
Very good info.!

Vic Stefanu - World Travels and Adventures Yeah!!😆🙌💕
Some commentary would be nice. Nobody will be offended and by the look of it there hasn't been a mourner around for about 50 years. Where is the last caretaker buried?
Thank you for watching my videos! A very early video of mine, thus the lack of comments, there is another video on my channel where I speak of the famous people buried here.. Not sure of the caretaker..
gracias por compartirlo muy bueno¡¡
Highgate, clean your cemetery up, People payed good money to lay in a nice grave
The decay of
A grave yard is always a sad thing neglected graves over grown with vegetation is always heart breaking it’s like people and no longer gives a damn about the soul that once lived there i remember feeling this when I was in New Zealand on a sacred Maori par sight graves of once great tribal chiefs destroyed by farmers letting their cattle
Run free in that paddock it’s sad or do i just believe that the dead deserve more Dignity?
Hi Paul, thank you for your comments!!
I'd like to have a couple of those old urns in my garden.
nice video

By the way you have an EVP at 1:11...I think it sounds like "get away from me!!"
And another one at 11:14...I think it says..."I'm cold"??
uppanadam74 and at 11:56 there is another EVP...that says "Mummy"
I feel like I heard as well!
+uppanadam74 it sounded "ghostly" and echoed ... eerie
That's how EVP's sound!! You have to listen really closely and intently to here them!! But they are there!! :-)!!
Hello Sir can you please add vampire video of highgate cemetery in London
If I had videotaped the vampire, I would have been glad to upload that video..lol...
Vic Stefanu - World Travels and Adventures thank you so much for sharing..I've always had a fqcination for cemetarys but far too scared to walk around on my own..anyone fancy coming with me??
Thank you for your comments!!
one of the most haunted cemeteries in the US is the Bachelor Grove Cemetary near Chicago..
Hi, thank you for this information and for viewing my videos!!
Is this cemetery abandoned? It is not taken care for a long time?
It is not abandoned, but, they do not take very good care of it..
Thank you. You mean dead people are still buried there? It looks like a forest with big trees and bushes.
After being imprisoned for decades the Mekon came looking for Dan Dare there but only found his grave.
Pas mal pour un film de vampires 👍
tu as raison!
maybe time to cut back on some of the vines.nice video
They have, very recently, cleaned up the place a bit... thank you for viewing my videos!!
It is sad that this historic, old cemetery
Hello, thank you for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍
I see people are still trying to find out who was Jack The Ripper was.
Can't help but wonder why he killed all those women..
Vic,i like what you do!
Never knew there were so many people buried there.
Thank you for a very good work!
Hi, thank you for viewing my videos and for your wonderful comments!!
Good Job!......At least we can see everything...I imagine the place takes on a different atmosphere after dark, so keep up the good work;.....go in and re-shoot around mid-night......if you did it to Kate Bush' "Hammer Horror", you'd be famous....get on it, son!
Let's us not forget these poor victims...
Why is it that when the public could afford such beautiful monuments to the lives they are marking is where the most neglected (part of the) cemetery's are.
Will someone tell me why there are no videos about Highgate East?
I think because you are forced to take a tour there...
Marti Dickson West hi this is the east side of Highgate, it's Highgate West that you have to pay for a guided tour, this is where the most elaborate and historic graves and mausoleums are. Unfortunately you have to stay with the guide and are unable to explore at leisure, however the tour is very good although quite short but definitely worth a visit to both sides. Hope this helped, also there are a few videos on utube showing the Highgate West 👍🏻🤓🙂it also comes under "the magnificent seven" these are all on the borders of London.

los cementerios me facinan es bellicima la muerte no tengo miedo morir estoy listo para hirme
gracias por tus comentarios
How much does it cost to be buried there? Anyone knows?
Sorry, I have no idea...
Vic Stefanu - World Travels and Adventures I just read in British tabloids , that to buy a plot here can cost about £70k. But it all depends on location , you can get one for about £3k. Someone even paid over half a million quid for a mausoleum... I don't know if that is true , this is according to the British tabloids.
IN America, we have "Adopt a Highway" to pick up trash and litter along the one-mile stretches.
Couldn't London have the same thing with this historical cemetery?
Thank you for your comments and for watching my videos
The vampire has returned...
I have not seen a vampire there, yet...
wished you would of said the dates on them...
There is another video on my channel where we read the tombstones of the most famous people buried in this cemetery..

It's sad to see the amount of grave markers overgrown with vines and weeds. I have never seen that here in the US.
+Donna Gilhousen Hello, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!! Please do not forget to subscribe to my channel!!
+Donna Gilhousen , There are plenty of cemeteries here in the U.S. that are over grown. I have been to Highgate many times. It is beautiful and peaceful. I always feel that those who have been laid rest there are truly at rest.
I'm sure there are I have just never seen one. They are very beautiful where I live at.
+Donna Gilhousen Hello, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!!
I agree, thank you for all your comments here..
Good video but it would have been better if time had been taken to read epitaphs.

It almost does, they have allowed everything to overgrow...
Havent you heard of the highgate vampire? apperently a vampire walks this old victoriasn place? Facebook has a page 'The Highgate Vampire Appreciation Page' llok it up, how much u believe is up to you tho lol
one day they all will raise from their graves ,,
I hope not.. I live close to the cemetery..
+Vic Stefanu - World Travels and Adventures this is fact and reality no meter you believe or not ,,
one day every human will have to raise again from their graves when their God will call them and every human will have to give accountancy of their every single deeds ,,
:-)
This cemetery is in very bad shape. Allowing so much over growth, especially of vines, will destroy the stones and inscriptions. Once the information is gone, it's gone forever. I photographed and transcribed every grave stone in our local cemeteries. It took me over 3 years to complete and I donated the info to our local library. All of our local cemeteries, even the small ones, are maintained and regularly mowed.
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
I'd like to walk through at night!
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍 The cemetery is closed (and guarded) at night!
@@VicStefanu thank you for your video! It's a sad comment on human nature that nearly all cemeteries and memorial gardens have to locked at night. Vandals and grave robbers have ruined it for us all.
