  • UPDATE:
Hi all, Just wanted to update you on how the setups been going, i've recently had issues with the MPPT controller overcharging the battery, (overcharging to 15.6v) if you see this happening on your battery remove the unit ASAP, it should cut off at 14.5V and if it doesn't you have a faulty unit. leaving it to overcharge can kill your battery. I'm currently making a video to address this.
Today I went out an bought a real budget Kings 12v Solar Panel with a Kings MPPT controller and a Kings 1500w 240v Inverter for my 80 series Landcruiser. The question is, is it any good?

This panel can put out close to 100 watts ruclips.net/user/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

I too have Kings products in my set-up. But I also have high end & Aussie made gear (ie. GME, REDARC, Engel, Drifta etc). IMO the best value for money products from Kings are their solar panels/blankets and their rear drawers. I've had the Kings rear drawers on my 80 Series for 4 years now, and it's been doing the job well. I also have one of their early inverters (4 years old), and while it's rarely used, it still works fine. I also have their 200W solar blanket and after 10 months it did fail, but 4WD Supacentre replaced it under warranty, and the newer design replacement (now 3 years old), still works well. The 160W fixed solar is still going strong after 2.5 years. And a few knick-knacks like tool sets and driving lights. So I too have no issues with Kings gear. Though I'm not a full time overlander, and I will always choose Australian made gear if within or just outside my budget. 🦘🪃

Kings main issue for me is they are a 580km round trip to the nearest store. The other issue is freight. Today they are advertising many things free freight with a "Gigantic 1 Day Only Free Delivery* Blitz". Note the asterisk. That's important. When I get to the checkout there is freight on these freight free items. Worse, other items clearly indicate freight on the item page, but back in checkout it's more for my address. Lastly, they just keeping adding freight in for each item. There's no combining of freight costs. But one thing $15 freight, it's $17 in the checkout, by another thing $20 freight, now $23, that's $40 thanks very much.
We do own a bit of Kings gear, but to have made it worth our while we did a day trip with the box trailer to pick up a roof top tent, a set of rear drawers and a whole stack of other stuff, and saved about $600 in freight.

I have a mixed quality gear (high quality & budget gear) fitted in my LC80. Most of my budget gear are Kings. And I have to say most of them (160W fixed solar / 200W solar blanket, rear drawers etc), have so far worked well. And I've had them over 3 yrs. The only products I won't recommend is their steel platform roof racks. They are heavy (50kg approx), and will start to rust after a year. The other item I'd replaces immediately are the brackets of their light bars. Mine rusted after a few months even though they are supposed to be stainless steel (tho the light bar itself is working well).

    Good advice.
One question, why "Buy Australian"? We manufacture sweet f all here now, chances are the components the Australian manufacturers use to build their products are imported anyway, so they end up just being a middle man. By spending the extra $ on such "Australian made" stuff we are just making so called "Australian businesses" lazier and less efficient. I agree there are a few exceptions that actually add substantial value and are in fact owned by Australians, but they are few and far between. At least Kings don't pretend and their prices are ok. Look at some well known manufacturers of bull bars for example that are supposedly Australian, but are actually foreign owned and sucked up that Jobkeeper funding for every drop they could get and even though they increased revenue over the period it was offered refuse to return our TAX dollars, the filthy immoral scum.

The 12v box is starting to get messy.
    But there's no real solution.
Only to put the wires that go to the same place in sleeving and work from there. Yes you will still if the odd wire here and there that needs to go somewhere else.
But if you can put those large amounts of wire together in a sleeve it will make a huge improvement.

Set it up at home and the stitching between the canvas and the PVC floor had visible holes and leaked even in light rain. Took it into the store and they said they don't handle returns and to call the Eastern State number, after about 4 months of emails and pictures they wanted me to organise and pay for it to be delivered to them. Nothing wrong with being Budget conscious and whilst Kings gear is inexpensive it works most of the time.
For me anyway. and I cannot afford to spend many hundreds on Redarc or ARB.
I have the same dual battery charger and their LED lights and I have not had any issues.
My fold out solar panels work well and my fridge does seem to drain my battery in hot summer days.
But that could be my 98AH battery is just not sufficient to keep the fridge running when the cabin temp gets to 45 in the car park at work.
It can't seem to last more than 8 hrs of running time with my 45 ltr. fridge in summer.
If the fridge is running on 240 volt in the house the fridge works fine and only seems to have an issue once in the hot car.

Just saw this video. You have me worried. I have that MPPT controller as well as the same Giant 140AH battery. Tomorrow I will be checking the charging voltage. My setup is in a caravan.

I also have the same battery, I did have a kings mppt controller with a 120w solar panel. Literally first time I plugged it in it went straight to 18volts. Unplugged it straight away and threw it in the bin! Bought a victron 75/15 mppt and it’s the best!

Had there Kings 110w Semi flex solar panel it was a beast got smashed by hail, ordered another one and they sent me a 160w semi flex instead and its trash, the coating on the panel all degraded and has broken apart, and before it did that it stopped producing power, have a 110w hard mount and its going great, cant complain i brought a CTEK D250SA through them for $300 where as Repco charge $900 for the same thing

Might want to check out why the voltage is so high? Could cause some issues if it keeps charging that high.

Just took my 3rd one back today. The first one all lights were working correctly and was charging at 15.6v the other two the solar light wouldn't come on and only put 5.6v into the battery, i upgraded to the mppt kings plus and am waiting for the message to come pick it up fingers crossed I don't have any issues with this one

I apreciate that ur coming from the perspective of an everyday consumer and still making relevant content but i think there is certainly a middle ground of parts that arent top spec but are still reliable and reasonably cost effective. Getting Kings products may work very well for some people but as you mentioned it just comes down to chance if the parts will work or last so really isnt actually adding much value to people considering a solar setup. Im happy if its worked for you but as someone considering doing a solar setup this reviwe doesnt help at all because i have no confidence my $400 will make the same distance yours will.

You can’t connect the mppt controller straight up to the battery yiu need a dc to dc charger that you can change the setting

  • @geoffgeoff143
    @geoffgeoff143 2 года назад

You only needed a PWM charge controller in your setup. I don't mean it in an offensive way but you don't understand the difference. With cheaper devices, PWM is generally more reliable because they are less complex, are well proven with time and don't rely on software. If your DC input is close to your DC output, as yours will be, there is no advantage with MPPT. However, if your DC input is aignificantly higher, then yes, you do need an MPPT for best efficency. The quality of charge you get in your battery is down to the poor design of charger or installation. Another tip for vehicle mounted solar PV. If ypu add a second module, ake sure it is compatible. You cant just mix them up (although, in reality ,if its the same voltage and power, it should be okay). Connect them in parrallel. Yes, unless you have gone overboard on cable size( including upgrading the cable the module comes with or keeping the tails very short), you will lose some power due to voltage drop but, if one module is shaded, you are still getting full power out of the other. In this situation a PWM controller wil also work better. This is not the case if they are series connected.

    cheap inverter.. Giandel every time.
and a must to over spec, need 1000w? buy 2000w model.
and if you're using an MPPT controller, might as well go a used ex roof panel, can pick up 300+w 42v panels for sfa these days.
