It's the school of thought that if I'm not gonna knock him out why would I throw it? They don't see the jabs use as a foundational strike to build off of and how amazing it is even by itself
One of my favourite jabs is the “backfist” jab to the eye(aimed at right side/left eye of opponent, vice versa in southpaw), Lenox Lewis was really good at this. Blinds them really well and if you throw a “lazy” version you can really set up a power right hand. Also odd angle for the opponent to block.
2:10 in my op, hand should go from guard to punch in straight line, or you are telegraphing. Its a common mistake to pull down or back the hand before punching... And you lower your guard before a very basic and counterattacable move like a jab.
Good video Jeff, but I really wouldn't call the last jab a "hammerfist jab". The hammerfist is normally when you strike with the bottom of your fist (opposite side of the thumb) kind of like if you were holding a knife upside down and stabbing with it. The motion you're showing really has nothing in common with a hammerfist since you're not striking with the same part nor with the same trajectory/mechanics. Most people call the third jab a "vertical jab" because it's simply a jab with your fist tilted thumbs up instead of thumb sideways.
Side note I wish more unorthodox strikes would be used in mma more often such as standing hammer fists and (reverse hooks) if that makes sense. Anyways great video, thanks Jeff!
as an in fighter the flicker jab helps as a combo. not only for out fighter. it helps as an outcomes of what you wanted to do. focus on what you want continue to progress. thanks for the gem
Thanks for these videos Jeff. Love the variety. Dunno if you see it, but if you slow down the video I can see that you lower your hand a lil bit right before the jab. Not sure if this is telegraphing or not
Hey Jeff, I come from a boxing back round, don't know if this is a MMA thing as I've not really done it but after your jab you should try push back to your stance from the ball of your lead foot not your heel. Correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe you could be caught stuck in the mud if the right opponent catches you out while you're on that heel retreat. Hope this helps improve your game, keep up the videos dude always get some nice tips here and there when I pop by :)
I've found the flick jab to be the most effective in street fights because it causes less damage to your hands and can be used to set up something heavier the flaring of the elbows can be telegraphed tho it's a give away
hammerfist and quick jab are very similar but if you spar enough, you can really see a difference, great vid, new sub, happy to be following your talents :)
Reminds me of Lennox Lewis or Usyk. Multipurpose jabs for different situations. Trevor Wittman says a fighter with good jabs leavs their opponent confused and extremely annoyed.
Great video. Could you do a video on how to defend the jab when it comes to mma, though? There's lots of videos online about how to defend the jab, but in boxing. And whilst lots of boxing techniques carry over to MMA, some of the blocking and such doesn't really considering the difference in gloves.
Can you make a video about how Rob font and kamaru Usman was able to use the jab and dominate cody garbrandt and gilbert burns sort of like a jab tactics video
i learned that hammer fist jab as a teenager in Issinryu Karate .I thought it wasn’t useful as i got older because i never saw it outside of Issinryu . I was wrong again . lol
Hey quick question, in our gym we learn to square up more for a power jab, pushing back your lead shoulder to kind of make it a straight with the lead hand. In my experience its still pretty fast and powerfull, you just have a little less range, thoughts on this variant?
Have you ever tried throwing the flick jab follwed up by the power jab for a double jab if your opponent backs up? Jack Slack has said changing the dynmic of your jab can really confuse your opponent. I don't think I have the skill to pull it off but maybe you have done it?
Another great video! the flick jab is very effective I feel especially if you use philly shell! Quick question- which martial art should you start off with if you want to train MMA? If you can do a video on that, that would be great!
You may want to start with boxing or muay thai....because the older you get, the more subconsciously afraid you become of being hit....so, it's a little harder to get good at it when you're older. Also, judo or wrestling are easy to pick up the younger you are in part due to the same reasons...a fear of getting slamed through the air into the ground.
@@JCMcGee Thanks for the reply! Ive started with boxing first, will then add kicks and elbows by doing muay thai/dutch kickboxing once I am comfortable with boxing and then I will add wrestling and BJJ. Jeff...I love your stuff, it's always great. Can I just say that on both your power jab and hammer fist jab, you are telegraphing it every time by cocking your first before you throw it.....you drop it six inches....shouldn't be a problem if you mean to do it, but I don't think you are. Your flick jab is it basically a backfist? You're dropping your hand after every one...again, shouldn't really be a problem as you say you throw it as you're moving back...but still, for a demo... Anyway...as I said, love your stuff and learn a lot from it.

Me too. I first learned it in Kung Fu and realized right away it could be applied to boxing and MMA striking when I started training those.
