I am so pleased you reviewed the MD11 as I really love your comprehensive and calm descriptions. I have completed two short flights with this aircraft so far. I was very fearful of its complexity to begin with but soon learned that it’s airbustiness, and other automations make it very satisfying and enjoyable to operate in the sim. Hope to see you fly it again soon, thank you.
Great job reviewing a great aircraft. Couple of interesting points - the nose tires could be changed without use of a jack, because of the way one lifts off the ground when the tiller is turned to it's stop. The landing issues caused some of our pilots to call the airplane a "SCUD" - because you never knew where exactly it was going to land. And our contract maintainers in Paris referred to the aircraft as an "MD-41", with "41" being the delay code for maintenance/technical. :) Great work! -S. (Former Delta Air Lines mechanic..)
I love hos even in these glass cockpits you can feel the older ones, due to the displays. It feels like looking at a DOS terminal and graphics made with ANSI characters versus looking at a modern Windows OS and bitmap graphics :)
Hello, I'm an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer on Boeing and Airbus. I have never been or worked on an MD-11, but I find your way of explaining its complex systems to be very clear and straight forward! Please keep up the great work!
Been working for UPS MD-11 for a good while, sad to see her approaching her retirement time. Until then, she is a wild fun aircraft to fly with, special during landings. She has some automation that a little exceeds airbus in terms of its automated system.
I've been "flying" this aircraft since PMDG first released their version for FS9/FSX back in 2008 and found it's a nice hybrid between Boeing and Airbus which makes it quite unique.
33:08 - The APU bleed pumps air into the bleed #2 - which engine 2 also does. Once engine 2 starts, the Packs/Bleeds will automatically shut down the APU bleed... which in turn shuts down the APU. So essentially "Turning on Engine 2" also shuts down the APU (after several minutes for the bleeds to pressurize etc) Found a couple of niggly bugs: ILS will sometimes veer off course (fail to intercept) if you have set the ILS frequency manually in the FMS, And the elevator trim tends too far aft. At flap 50, you will sometimes run out of trim authority on approach. Finally, pulling the elevators past about 50% makes the MSFS rubber band pitch start oscillating. If they fix the trim authority this will hide the elevator issue again. Also had a few instances of the LNAV trying to turn back to the runway after takeoff. Have to direct-to the next waypoint to clear it. 3 bugs that I care about. Other than that, I'm liking it.
I'd like to add: engine model inaccuracies. Eng oil & nacelle temp always 0c-67c. Even when it's 35c, the cold temps are considerably less than ambient. Also, warm up takes less than 10 seconds. It's basically the default asobo turbofan. Spool times insane. After flying the Fenix where it almost feels like a real dynamic simulation (egt+oil+waste heat retains) this feels bad. If they can put some effort into the eng model I'd recommend it. They've done a lot of good with it and I don't wanna cut them down..but wow the engine model is bad
thanks for this video,, my first day with msfs md11 tfdi and i just landed from Lima (SPJC) to Trujillo (SPRU) in autoland. Gracias. Regards from Peru.
Great as always. I’m glad for the review. Having just purchased the PMDG 777 I wanted to see if this was worth buying. And I will get it. Many thanks!!
I think both A320 and MD-11 's MCDU are manufactured by Honeywell. Both were released in 1988 resp 1989, so it's stands to reason that the design was reused.
Great video. I’ve been flying the MD for a few days, and it’s still a bit like handling a Cobra! You’ve taught me a few more things. I’ve had the same Profile difficulties, and I’m not completely sure about the Speed button either! 🥴 I love it though.
It;s got some bugs but I'm loving it so far. Landings are a challenge, mainly because of the savage pitch movements with control inputs. When it all goes well it's incredibly satisfying and when it doesn't I have the chiropractor on speed-dial :-) Hopefully you'll also be reviewing the 2 727s we have on approach - FSS this month and FSR/SWS collab later in the year - it's great to have vintage planes available now.
I love this plane so much. I just did two flights and slammed it on the runway, it's really tricky and easy to get approach and final won't. Love your video and I learned a lot about the system. Only criticism I have... you didn't show the fire warning test, not because of the test, because of the sound. This sound is so awesome and special I think about coping it and using it on my mobile as the alarm tone. 😂😂😂
Great video. It's nice you see the positives. I hope they address the trim on final, you'll notice that she is at full nose up trim 15.5 deg, they are aware of it but l hope it is their priority. I think this is why many are finding the landings difficult, the nose up, getting slow, dropping like a stone.
@320SimPilot TIP: you can click-and-drag any rotary-knob in FS2020. I find it much easier than the mouse wheel especially with things like the heading selector knob.
For even more convinience the hyd aux 1 is also a push button next to the Autobrakes switch so you don’t need to go up to the hyd panel. You also need to make sure “alt Rpg” Switch is set to on for Your transponder
Thank you very much indeed for your lovely videos! Super well explained as ever. Is there any A320 Thrustmaster setup for using the joystick (reverse axis, etc…) with this 3 jet? Greetings from Spain
Fine presentation of a great aeroplane, thanks! However, you better file an FSR to your NP-FO - flying at CRZ LVL on LCL QNH1004 could get you in trouble in the real world🙂
Looking forward to flying this. I have it, but havent jumped in yet. Finishing up some other flight schedules that I had for the a330. Not a fan of TFDi, but the aircraft has some potential
Ima try out this beauty today, really looking forward to it. Your game looks beautiful btw are you using any light or runway addons to make your game looking that great?
39:03, a second click changes the primary autopilot from 1 to 2 (right side) so by clicking it twice, you've actually armed the First Officer's/Right side flight director to control the autoflight system :) V-speeds in White concerned me, They've been entered but then not clicked again to verify/bold them. Or it could be that you're taking off with manual speed 250 instead of the FMS managed speed... which is fine cos it will capture automatically the FMS managed after it hits climb mode anyway as it did at 40:50
I’m really interested in the MD11, now the 777 hypes died off. I suspected I wouldn’t really like the 777, as it’s so well designed and capable, it’s quite boring to fly. This old girls got some real character.
I love your instruction on the MD11, however I have one question. You are cleared for takeoff, you press the nav/prof and auto flight button. Push power up and the auto throttles engage, no problem. After you are airborne do you press the auto flight button again to activate ap1? When I do this the auto pilot is disengaged and it screams “AUTOPILOT “. I can’t seem to get past this
I purchased and installed the MD11 on P3Dv5.1, two days ago. First remarks and I think there will be many more. No pushback with Shift+P The wheels don't turn? No IRU alignment. I expected better, but unfortunately not at the level of those that PMDG had done. And there is no forum, support directs me to Discord, but impossible to enter
Another great video, thanks! There’s been some criticism of it being overly sensitive in the pitch axis, not sure if that’s true to the real aircraft. I have purchased it and quite like it. Very different from other airliners that I have though, takes some getting used to!
@@captainpiett765 I haven’t flown this version yet, but I did fly the PMDG version, which was also hard to land. In the real aircraft, LSAS was introduced to reduce pilot induced oscillations due to the length of the aircraft, so it would make sense for it to be sensitive in pitch. Whether it’s accurate or not - I can’t say. They did have an ex MD-11 pilot on the beta team…
Why is there a ticking sound as soon as you turn ON the battery? I've noticed that on some 737 versions. I find it annoying but I guess it has its use.
Amazing video, but that takeoff performance seems a bit unrealistic, you'd think they'd just reduce thrust to not climb at more than let's say 3.5-4k fpm on initial climb, even though the plane is totally capable of doing it, maybe it wouldn't be very comfortable for the passengers to just climb at almost 6k fpm and 25 degrees, or am I wrong? I'm really curious if that was ever the case, i've never seen the MD-11 take off. Maybe they didn't do such light takeoffs IRL too much.
I wish that, since this video is titled a "review", you would have added a chapter at the end where you summarize all your findings. Your video is 1h8m, and its only the last minute of the video that actually has the information I need, and it isn't even given it's own time stamp.
Has anyone else been experiencing the autopilot constantly disconnecting? It's as if my idle controls are acting like they're fighting the AP enough to disengage it.
Flew this for the first time today. While on autopilot, and everything going fine, it suddenly went into a nose dive. I manually took over etc, then about 30 minutes later it did the same. Anyone had issues with this and have any advice
Anyone having issue with the stab trim continuously increasing, auto warning for trim movement, and then the plane finally noses down due to speed protection
Options -> MANPAD Defense System That sure caught my eye. Ignored for a moment the frustrating linguistic contraption if you know what MANPAD stands for, does this mean this aircraft actually has a simulated something like CAMPS? Not sure how that would even work in MSFS but I found that interesting. Or maybe it's an easter egg of some kind for a reference I'm not familiar with?
@@cmaylo CAMPS is the Civil Aircraft Missile Protection System. It as basically a flare system. I wasn't aware MD had a special passive system for the MD-11 so that's interesting.

Yet another MSFS addon that handles like a Cessna. I'm starting to think that a lot of these developers are just running into the limitations of MSFS's arcade-like flight modeling and are realizing that it's almost impossible to properly model inertia and aircraft weight. It's something that's always plagued these large body aircraft in this sim.
This plane looks awful for 80$. Wear and tear is made poorly. Also lot of things like lights and openings on fuselage are just painted on texture and not actually modeled in. Textures are horrible. Spaces between modules inside cockpit. I can go on and on. This comes no where near PMDG, FBW, JustFlight or Fenix. I am not saying that they cannot do it but perhaps in a year or so they will manage to polish all those things. I cannot comment on flight characteristics and operation but also there I hear mixed opinions. This review is misleading.
"Dial-a-flap" oh god that name is SUCH a product of it's time hahaha
