Tool steel is always a good choice for a knife. If hardened well, a knife for life. There for ... as I can see you like challenges, you often ask what kind of knife to make, what materials and so on. So, Let me to give you a challenge: hunting knife like this one using the old file and shainsaw bar for san mai or damascus or both :-) , basicly scrap materials . What do you think?
Beautiful knife, but above all the video editing is a LOT better! Wow, the cinematic shots that were all edited to the beat of the music was on point man! There were so many Cool shots that added movement rather than a whole video of locked off shots. Really top notch video, keep up the good work man!
You make beautiful work. Excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. It makes me happy to see others putting in that effort. I’m 16yo from Colorado, USA and I’ve been making knives since I was 12. I started out with a filing jig and now I have a 2x72 and a heat treatment oven which I made by myself off of commissions from the knives. But seriously man you do the craft well and I appreciate the work. Have a good night.
one of a most beautiful and very well done handle i've ever watch. i wish could watch ur making tanto with that kindda beautiful wood grain. that would be awesome
Love the work. From old to new, great stuff man. Have made a decent kitchen knife out if an old flat fininishing file for my late mom. Her regular knife broke by some twist of fate right on the handle. Short tang shoved into the wood and then pinned down with some sort of crappy rivets. The tang itself broke and was unable to repair. So scrapped it and made a new one. That knife now STILL hangs in my kitchen and is in use daily.
A tool doubling as art, well done. I would either keep it as an heirloom with a story to tell, or have it in a shop with work waiting for it. Well done indeed
A beautiful knife, I've made a few file knives but I'm still at part time amateur hobbyist stage, the friends that now own them are all happy with them, I do need to work on my heat treat though, good video bud.
Incredible work. And your videos are delightful! You’ve got it figured out my friend ! I make knives and want to start a channel of my own soon. Your work is inspiring
I'm not a big fan of old file knives because you never really know what you are getting with the steel, but this was fun to watch and the final knife looks very well done. And I love that custom pin stock, that might be the coolest part.
What does FILE BLADE mean? 🙂 A great "ENVELOPE OPENER" 😄. This is a great work ... The handle and the pattern of the steel are great. The working environment is also pleasant. Health to your hands.👍🙌
Probably ur best vid yet.. so much to unpack. What do you look for on the spectrometer? After final handle sanding what was that you applied to spine and the other substance applied to handle itself? Thanks for any answers it’s a big help for a university of RUclips student like myself... great vid.
Tryin to improve with every vid :) We check the steel composition and compare it to steel types that we know files can be potentially made of. We applied cold oxide on the spine To the handle we have applied linen oil Thanks
Beautiful craftsmanship. I'm an amateur hobbyist knife maker and I use file's for my knives, I normally use old Sheffield and Nicholson files, could you give me any recommendations for other good file's to use, thank you. Paul.
Thanks Paul, the best way to find out whether the file is useful as a knife material is to check its composite with a spectrometer. You can probably ask at a nearest scrapyard if they could do it for you :)
XRF Spectrometers and Metal Analyzers. XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometry) is a non-destructive analytical technique used to identify and determine the concentrations of elements present in solid, powdered and liquid samples.
What do you think about knives made out of old files?
@josh major exactly, it can be a very good steel of you can great treat it properly
I like videos like this. Its nice to see the files get a second life instead of being discarded to rust away. Very nice work. 👍
I enjoy the process from scrap to beauty! It gives extra purpose to the file. Almost sentimental!
Sick

Love the design and the addition of the hamon line. I wish more knife makers would use it. Makes the blade look a lot cooler.
Beautiful knife with all the attention to all the small details that is required. Very well done sir!!
Thanks a lot!
That is a truly beautiful knife. I love the dark contrast of the blade on those scales.

@@BarbershopCustoms Yes it is.
@@BarbershopCustoms What temperature do you set your oven at and how long do leave your knife in for tempering ??
@@neanderthaloutdoors9202 depending on the steel, for this one it was 2h in 180 C

Hey man
what mark do you use on the needle file?
This is a beautiful piece of work. How many hours did it take to make?
Hi!
Which material did you apply before the quench, to get the hamon?
A temperature resistant silicone
What is that black coating he applied before heat treating the blade? Where can I get some of that?
It's an anti decarb paste
question, what was the scanner doing scanning the file? never seen that before.
