- I picked up this commercial leaf blower at a yard sale for $45 not running. lets take it apart and see if we can fix it. filmed this about 4 weeks ago, we will get back on the beaver project soon.

I used to pick up lawn mowers at the curb for disposal, and always asked the home owner to make sure it was being thrown out. Many a time I started these "discards" after adding gas! No really, I'm not making this up! There are people out there, some of them college educated, who do not know how the internal combustion engine works! I've started old mowers on the first pull,,,after changing the spark plug! I fixed A mower by replacing the lost bolt that held the handle to the deck. Yes, people can be dumb, and I loved them for it!
Mustie, Make a gasket from a cereal box (Waxed cardboard style) Learned this when I was 12, it works, its cheap, and it lasts for years. Dip the part in oil, lay on box cardboard to make a print. Then cut with a razor. double up if needed but it is 10000% better than a torn gasket any day.
That thing blows..... And does so better than any hand held or backpack style leaf blower than I have ever seen!! Holy crap!!!
Darren, You are on the mark with regard to the alcohol in fuel. I spent a decade working in the fuel business and I can fill in some blanks for your viewers. The ethanol that is added to gasoline is there for a couple reasons. First and foremost it's there to mitigate the ongoing issues of storage tank water volumes. Storage tanks at your local stations have vent pipes that allow the tank to breathe. As such when it is warm outside the tank temp increases and vapor is expelled. When the surface temp of the parking lot drops the tank cools a few degrees and it intakes outside air and with it some moisture. The ethanol is hygroscopic and the water will then be absorbed. This implies that you are in fact buying a tiny bit of water with your gasoline but it's generally kept at acceptable levels that most engines can tolerate. There is also the chance that storage tanks can have water issues with regard to water table. Some tank necks in the storage tanks may leak ground water in the tank and thus the ethanol helps to solve that issue. All in all it's an attempt to avoid that issue of the phone call from a customer complaining that your station gave me a dose of water so bad my car won't run.
The other reason that gas companies like ethanol is that it's a cheap and wonderful "filler". So for a 10 gallon fillup you have just recieved 1 full gallon of ethanol that is mostly worthless in engines not prepared to make power on alky. When an engine is prepped for running alcohol the jets are HUGE. That's because there are far less BTUs per gallon of alcohol. So in engines prepared for gasoline the alcohol acually produces less power but MOST people won't notice it.
The ill effects of ethanol in small gas engines are VAST. When possible running non alky gasoline in your mowers, motorcycles and chainsaws is best. IF you can find non ethanol 92 from a reputable station or in cans from the store as Darren does is ideal. Typically the octane rating at the pump is less than the sticker shows as gasoline degrades in octane rating fairly fast and unless the station moves a lot of volume it will decline. The premium tank might be a couple points down if they haven't had premium delivered in several weeks. Now don't misunderstand that I think your mower NEEDS 92. IT doesn't in any way NEED it. It will run on 87 regular just fine. My reasoning for running premium 92 in mowers is that it tends to stay above that 87 rating a tad longer and thus produces more consistent results in machines that are run occasionally. IF you live some place where you mow a lot or cut trees a lot...then your constantly refreshing your fuel and there is no reason for 92. In fact the machines may start easier on 87 as it's burn rate is a tad faster and it sparks off easier. They tend to run more efficient on 87 as the spark timing and cam profiles aren't designed for the slightly slower burn rate of 92. But bumping the octane a bit can be worthwhile in occasional use machines.
Engines in storage if left with gas over winter will degrade in octane rating to the point where it barely wants to run on it. The gasoline from our childhood was far more stable and often was the case that you could leave it without any kind of stabilizers for an entire winter....and it would crack off like it would last fall. Progress folks.... it makes me shake my head.

We've noticed the same thing in the states but we don't have an option to buy E0 fuel. I don't think I've seen regular E0 fuel unless it was 93 octane, and in my area it's $3.50 a gallon. I know that's cheap compared to European gas prices and even Canada's. I wish we had a choice between E0 and E10.
So that's part of the reason for the ethanol.. it does make sense, as methalated spirits can be used to dry water in a fuel tank. Was led to believe that in Australia, ethanol was to assist the sugar industry alone and the impression that it increased profits for government and oil companies. Thankfully, down here, e10 is a little rarer. Mostly the budget fuel stations that carry it in standard unleaded. Occasionally, it's the only standard unleaded fuel that's available.
Haven't seen the 87 octane since leaded fuel was phased out over a decade ago. It all starts at 91(94 with ethanol), then 95, then 98.. rarely see an octane level over 100 at the pump.
The ethanol blended fuels wreak with anything that's wasn't designed for the blend. Not only in running. Have seen it severely soften and almost liquify the diaphragms in sidedraft Stromberg carbys(175 CD2 and the like). Not to mention the cleaning it can do. Clogs up fuel filters and fuel pickups in no time if the fuel system has debris and dust in the system(common in country Australia). Haven't had too many issues with mechanical fuel pump diaphragms and old fuel lines though.
The fuels down here in Australia must be more stable though. Have had fuel sitting in cars and tins for mowers for 3 to 4 months... no starting or perceptable running issues. It still smells like petrol or gasoline for the US/Canada dwellers.
One problem with premium fuel for mower or small engine use, however- ethanol has an octane rating (anti-knock index) of about 110, and is cheaper for the fuel supplier than gasoline. As a result, many suppliers are using it as a quick and cheap way to nudge the octane rating a bit higher, allowing them to use less of the expensive additives. So some places are seeing as much as 15% ethanol in premium fuel, with regular remaining at 10%. This is even worse in places that have wide temperature swings that necessitate oxygenated fuel in the summer and conventional fuel in the winter. In those places, ethanol content can reach 17% in the summer months in premium fuel! In my opinion, the best thing to do is use regular fuel with a shot of fuel stabilizer in it at all times.
I must disagree with your assessment. First of all is that it is not a "cheap filler". Ethanol and methanol cost more. This is one of the many reasons gas costs more just before memorial day. They go to the summer blend that has alcohol in the gas. At least in my area. There is a reduced cost of the alcohols in gas due to gov subsidies. Please notice, I said reduced and not off setting cost.
I worked at a gas station in the late 70's and early 80's in Phoenix AZ. You wish to talk about temp swings. We had to test our tanks for water on a regular bases. Never found water in the tank. The reason alcohol is added to gas is because of it's high O2 level. It burns cleaner. If you go to rural areas near where I live, you can find ALL gas with out alcohol. This is because they are not under the thumb of the EPA to cut air pollution.
Final note. Alcohol is know as a renewable resource. Therefore it is good in the green eyes.

To anyone that has one of theses type blowers I strongly suggest doing a fan blade inspection for cracks. I had one break off and it was very violent. Hole in housing. Took out the shaft seal and side case gasket.

In 8th grade machine shop class in my school, we rebuilt lawnmower engines, and whenever we needed a missing gasket, we used paper bags from the grocery store. Just traced the outline with a pencil, then cut them out with razor blades.

Great field, and lot of money in that with the new fancy repair shops..there is a reason I tend to have neighbors bring down so many thing that use small engines to my house, sometimes on a weekend 5 or more each day!

love your videos! quick tip to share if you don't already know. when cleaning the small passages in the carb and the emulsion tube I have found using guitar strings work great. Available from .009- .060 and are inexpensive to keep on hand and last forever. Keep up the great work!.

Learnt an absolute ton of information from you .
I have a late 2006 VW Touareg.
A pretty complex vehicle.
I have now have the confidence to sort any issue I get with it .
After a normal 20k service . Oil . Oil filter . Fuel and air .
It decided to leak coolant .
Took me a while to sort but it's back on the road .
Fitted new thermostat and water pump . Couple of new hoses minor ones .
Cooling system now hold pressure for at least a couple of hours .
The car now feels a much nicer drive .
I'm not a trained mechanic. But never been scared to diagnose what's wrong .
But with garden machinery you can't just plug in a fault reader can you .
Thank you for giving me that little bit of confidence to have a look and diagnose what is going on .

Watching you rebuild carburetors is very soothing.
The whole air exchange thing is why I fill my fuel tanks to the cap for storage (with fuel that has stabilizer in it). Never had issue in spring with first start ever.
That Briggs is the generation of engines that I learned my skills on, they are a tough breed, I've abused several and wasn't able to kill them. The 5 hp aren't as durable, but I developed serious respect for the brand.

Mustie has the best attitude. I would have been so aggravated when the float bowl was leaking and he needed to pull the carb off and start again. Perhaps Mustie1's anger is left on the cutting room's floor. He never gets mad!
Once the rims have a rust spot, it will slowly travel under the paint and you're back to a flat tire. Best thing to do is... take the tire off and wire wheel the rim down to metal where the tire bead is and repaint it... On bent rims I use a body hammer and dolly... Remember... work the metal, don't let the metal work you.
That looks like an old Little Wonder blower. They are excellent blowers.

I've been more into small engines lately; I'm a computer guy but I know intermediately about v8's due to my dad's drag racing days and my first car, a 69 Firebird. Small engines are familiar but not. Your videos have helped me quite a bit in understanding the mechanics behind ATV/MOWER/GENERATOR, etc. I really enjoy the videos and the rawness of how you troubleshoot and your methodology. Keep it up! I look forward to what else you find and resurrect.
Oh, and your best video is the gas powered drill with the small plane engine. That is an impressive invention and troubleshooting genius!!

I've used oil soaked brown cardboard, the stuff you get on the back of lined paper refill packs, for replacement gasket.
Works pretty well and lasts quite a while too
Loctite 518 instant gasket is handy stuff. It sets only when air is excluded so no risk of cured lumps clogging important things.
Still great work Must ! Why folks dispose and don’t pay for repairs anymore. I fixed small machines, appliances, motorcycles cars and the biggest computers I can’t tell you about. Why I like your channel.

I bought one at a yard sale 5 years ago for $30 and put in fresh gas and it works great but some of the carbuerator linkage is missing and is no longer available so it runs full throttle only. I made a bracket and pull it behind my riding mower. I no longer rake - only blow a ton of leaves into the woods

I have the same blower i paid 150$ for it, it is so heavy and even starting it is exhausting but it is powerful. Don't let it run on the same spot or you will get a hole in your grass.

Nice man, I picked up a real nice giant vac blower last year for $25.00. It wouldn’t run because the spark plug hole was stripped out. Fixed that, runs like a charm, love running into deals !

When I have to "clean" holes and passages, I've found rifle bore cleaning brushes on a variable speed drill works wonders. They're available in nylon, brass, copper, and stainless steel.

Great sounding and torqueful (?) engine. I store old control cables in a pail with a mix of ATF and Diesel which eventually migrates through the spring to the wire if they are not vinyl coated. Then the entire cable goes inside the mix.
I switched to non-ethanol 92 octane premium for all of my yard tools three years ago and have not had a carburetor issue with any of them since then. I pay up for the fuel but it is well worth it to me.
Used these cleaning driveways and parking lots took a big bristled broom and scrubbed the dirt off while blowing with one of those . It’s was so powerful it could lift the pavement up if you blew underneath. Big heavy and hard to pull around or push hard to start hard to pull the chord to so if it isn’t running right you’ll be tired from pulling that rope ! Most powerful blower I ever ran, does a good job too ! Lawn furniture anything loose don’t stand a chance . That little door is adjustable also stay out of the rocks or you’ll pay for a paint job !
A long time ago, 27 yrs or so , I worked for the company that painted the housing for little wonder blowers , that's an earlier one that was done with automotive paint, later ones were powder coated and the finish lasts much longer

That motor sounds good. Idles good at a really low rpms with no knocking or clanking. Awesomely long stroke should have a lot of low end torque. Seems like it would be a good motor for a go-kart.

the word you're looking for is hygroscopic
ethanol alcohol is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water from the atmosphere. so you are absolutely correct.

Mustie, you are 100% correct!! When it's added to the gasoline, ethanol alcohol is 100% alcohol when it starts out... No water has been added at that point, however, ethanol is hygroscopic (attracts water) right out of the air ANYTIME it's exposed to atmosphere.. which starts right at the local gas station.. completely sealing the container OR keeping the tank as full as possible to limit atmosphere exposure are the best 2 ways to prevent the water in fuel problems.. this has been my experience in the automotive side at least 🙂 Love your videos BTW from Washington State.. I've learned a great deal from you about small engines

One thing that used to drive me crazy when those carbs would leak wasn't the needle, but the jet. There is a little tapered area right where the smallest diameter starts (the part that sticks through the throat of the carb.) That taper has to seat with a female taper in the carb body. If there's any corrosion on either part, it won't seal and it will leak. I kept an old jet with the threads ground off to use as a lap to lap the female taper in the body. I only had about a 50% success rate. I usually had to replace the body.
That engine might have had the carb body replaced as it appeared to be a more orange color than red, like the upper half. Maybe someone soaked it previously which changed the color. I've see Briggs engines that were a more orange color as well as white, black, yellow, gold and brown. Another oddity on that engine is the white plastic fuel tank. I don't recall Briggs using different color tanks. I thought everything on the engines were the same color and the plastic tanks were the same color as the engine. That fuel tank might have been replaced. The I/C [industrial/commercial] engines used the updraft carburetor.

I find with my ultrasonic cleaner, and I have the same one as you, what I do, and it makes it work better is, I turn the temp to 50,let it warm up for 1/2hr, then I turn off the heater and let it run, cleaning the carb or whatever is in there for 17 minutes, the reason I do this is, if you look inside, which I did, the temp and ultrasonic are on the same circuit, so having the heater and ultrasonic running at the same time makes the ultrasonic part not run at peak efficiency, and while just the ultrasonic part is running alone on the circuit it warms up the liquid all by its self, just a hint to make the cleaning process that much more efficient, great video.

Im just amazed that the air filter is still on it. Those are usually allways missing. And its the good old carb too.
Nice one, and I actually need parts for one of those, not the engine, but the blower itself, for my own use too..not a 'sell' one, although when leaves are falling, those are the easiest things to sell Ever! Even more so than backpack blowers, which tend to be beat when you get them. One thing I do is put a drop of oil on the threads and sealing area of the high speed and idle mixture assemblies before I put them together so it doesn't rip that packing or o-ring, also makes them easier to adjust when you're trying to when you get it first started. With the Flex seal trick, I use a spot wand and shoot some down through the valve stem, so it attacks that leak from the inside..but I do that trick too..and it does seem to work on bead leaks. One last trick I do with those leaf blowers,borrowed off the new ones, is to put a cheap 4" (or whatever size works from the new mount you make)swivel caster on the front..it makes them 100x easier to use, and if you're going to keep that one might think of doing that too ;)

now you have a fan to blow cool air in the shop in the summer. as for the fuel - yes the alcohol does want to collect water. where i live ( in WA. ) we have non alcohol fuel but if i didn't i would make my own by taking pump gas add water to it ; shake well ; set off to the side for a day then pour the gas off the top of the alcohol since the water intermixes with the alcohol ( on a molecular level) and is heaver than gas. to help with the machine - take a piece of plastic bag and cover the fuel fill and put the cap on (with a full tank). also what i do with equipment that gets not used all the time is to shut the fuel off and run it out of gas so the carb is empty. works for me.

My Wonder boy has a 16 hp Briggs . I used to have to rebuild the carb every year . I put a good fuel filter on it and glued the jets in place and haven't had to touch it in years. You had better luck than i did the first two hundred times I rebuilt that stupid carb . lol
I live in Minnesota there is ethanol in all of the gas, except certain places sell out of the pump non oxygenated feul. which is for non road use. this is meant for lawn mowers, yard equipment, etc. they don't want you to put it in cars and I believe that it doesn't have road tax on it even. It is suppose to be made to leave in things that you don't use much and sit for extended periods of time without problems. it seems to work but I haven't used it a lot as I have to drive like 30 miles to get it
That's a shame. Here in upstate NY we have no problem finding non-ethanol.
4 years ago I started using it exclusively in all my motors and my wife's car and the difference in performance was very noticeable. Even my wife noticed. Oddly I tried it in my 2002 SAAB Aero and it threw 'check engines', so had to stay with the 91/93 octane options.
You can adjust the float without taking it off by just using a smaller screw driver , to make it higher put it between the float needle tab and turn the screwdriver a little & to lower float put the screwdriver between the tab & seat housing each with slight pressure on the float . Well done !
Bought a ran last year riding mower one time, sigh was more like a decade, never seen a carb so full of crap, all the fuel evaporated. Was a fun project to get it running again.

One more great video. I agree with the fact that alcohol attracts water. This is why they say do not buy premix at a boat dock. Much lower turnover rate vs regular gas. Yes I own a 2 cycle boat motor. Next on proof. All vodka starts as grain alcohol. 190 proof or greater. Just add water to get the desired proof you want. You want cheap vodka, buy grain alcohol add equal amounts of water and alcohol together. What make the best vodka is the number of times it is filtered.

3.5 minutes in u mention is different than what use to seeing. My manco dingo came stock with pretty much that same 8hp briggs setup. Great motor. Was new in 1988 for me. My friend to this day has that briggs on his cement mixer.

We've had the same machine for 15+ years and it moves mountains of wet nasty leafs from my 5 acres in Michigan. I blow them onto a tarp a s drag it away. There's no better machine for fall.
Using the tarp is the way to move large quantities of leaves. This was my mode of operation in Auburn AL when the seasons changed and the trees in the backyard dropped massive amounts of leaves!!!
If you don't have a tarp, an old vinyl shower curtain works just fine. Lol.

That type of carburetor is called the leaker by the brigs and Stratton people. The simple way to fix the leak is a tiny plastic gasket that you install between the brass needle seat housing and the aluminum seat of the carburetor. Over time the aluminum corrodes and causes the carburetor to leak gas.
