There are very few artists who put out an album in which I like EVERY song on the album. This particular album of hers is one of those albums.

Her voice is PHENOMENAL. She uses her voice like a trumpet.

I play the trumpet and I respectfully disagree. More like a flugelhorn for sure. A darker, smoky tone.

Her voice is like a french horn, lush, rich, and precise, and can go from a slow simmer to bold belting, climbing octaves. She can make a love song sound like gospel! LOVE HER! My FAVORITE SONG of hers is "Been So Long" from her debut album, RAPTURE. Every single song on Rapture is phenomenal and I don't even say that about my favorite singer, there's always a dog or two, but not Rapture.

Anita is definitely her own style…classic and sultry soul ballads with beautiful poetic lyrics take send you on a journey…she takes her time to tell a story. I love the energy of her delivery here; her running her fingers through her hair and swaying to the music…she’s passionate and connecting to her audience. Although catchy and entertaining, so many pop performances also can feel a bit disconnected, with rehearsed and mechanical movements…microwaveable even…follow the formula and you’ve got a hit or take a group of guys or ladies and ‘mold’ them into a pop group. Anita is certainly among those very unique and organic type of artists and performers. Truly a gem.

I remember 4 scores and 7 years ago - they had on the cover of Ebony magazine - who is the best Whitney Houston, Anita baker or Janet Jackson - we loss our minds in Junior High at the lunch room tables. So funny. If you revisit her - maybe "No one in the worlds": sweet Love" "fairytales" "Just Because" Just because, just because, just because, just because and one more time - "just because"

Anita is still very much alive, but has recently retired, so yeah, no covers upcoming. Her music will live on though. She has one of the most unique mezzo soprano voices I’ve ever heard. I love her drama. Watch the video from her farewell tour where she sings this song with Regina Bell. Anita’s voice is like silk in that video as it always is imho. Blessings to you!

She won Grammys in three different genres (R&B, gospel and for her Christmas album), this wasn’t her top hit, her top hits from Rapture album are absolute classics in both R&B and pop. She inspired so many artists (including Mary J Bliges idol and Beyoncé’s favorite artists). Anita is a living legend, others try to cover her. She is mezzo soprano who can go low too. sweet Love is 80s gold (she wrote too)

'No One In The World'- Anita Baker, my fav. You mentioned hearing Anita cover a song, the inverse (sorta), is 'Love Should Have Brought You Home Last Night' by Toni Braxton. Just in that that song was written for Anita Baker by LA Reid and Babyface (and from the soundtrack of the movie Boomerang), Anita declined b/c she was late-term pregnant and said give it to the girl who sang the demo, who was Toni Braxton, relatively unknown at the time...Toni was singing Demo's and had a singing gig w/her sisters. 'Love Should Have...." became a major hit for Toni, so then we had Toni, but you can tell the song has Anita Baker all over it the way it was written, even though Anita never recorded it. (Edit is Toni SLAYED 'Love Should Have...', became her 1st hit, and hit BIG).

Pop music is easier to sing. That why we call it pop. The music of Anita and like wise are not easy to duplicate. Almost Everyone that have little singing voice go for pop song.
Anita is unique very few around will attempt this music and succeed. The one thing with pop is that they are hundreds of Celine Dion, Kelly clarkson , Pink. It like mass production.

Truly awesome!!! One of my favorites which is never been released. Impossible Dream and then she did Somewhere. Both awesome as well.

Being a Poet I pay attention to the lyrics as much as I do the melody. The verse " If I can no longer see your face than I will remember your smile" that right there is such a powerful set of words.
The reaons as to way you might not like this kind music is that you are siding with familiarity. There is a certain comfort and residence that comes up to mind when we hear something that is associated with a time in our life.
The problem with this type of music for some peope is the notes carry futher. While in Pop the notes are shorter and more to the point. Which is more accommodating to some that live a fast-paced life or would like to be more direct in their emotions and perception of life.
Back when Anita Baker was out in her prime she had to sing the longer notes to show her vocal dexterity and stamina because they were so many that were before her that had outstanding dexterity and stamina.
As such you had to showcase all your talents in every song to be able to compete and to remain relevant in that genre of music.
When i heard you bring up Mary J Blige as an example let me know why you said what you said. While MJB does havs range it is not a required for her to show it. She os more Hop Hop-R&B that was pioneered by the group Bell Biv DeVoe who are the 1 /3 of the group New Edition. Which came on the heels of New Jack swing genre which was pioneered by Teddy Riley Al b Sure and Keith Sweat.
So to sum it up you just like your melodies and cord arrangements to be precisely to the point. Which is not a bad thing.

I usually prefer live versions from artists, but her songs are better on the studio tracks. I think it is because her voice is so unique and complicated. She needs studio producers to capture it all and reign it in.

You’ve just described a preference for pop over gospel sensibilities. These are the things Clive Davis made Whitney Houston strip out of her music so she could have success with a mainstream (read white) audience.

Anita is a soul and Jazz singer. she cab definately do the pool stuff you like, but I don't believe it would fit Anita style. her tone is deep and rich, but yest string and Memorable. pip singers usually don't have a deep and rich tone like Anita. deep and rich times usually sound and work better with quiet storm and r and b music. I think you would like Anuta other songs and enjoy it, but you are more of a pip guy it looks like.

I really like you. You seem like a really kind person. But you don't understand music or artists. What you are saying about Anita Baker, who if you listen to her greatest hits compilation, you would not say, "oh, I would love her to sing Kelly Clarkson's song." Would you ask Beethoven to play jazz because you're not into classical music? Would you ask Bon Jovi to sing R&B? Appreciate music for what it is, it is great in it's own right and it shouldn't have to fit in your box of music you are used to. I don't like rock much and would never say, maybe they need to sing jazz music for me to like their singing. You are missing the point of musical styles. Anita Baker is one of the greatest singers ever! She definitely has a unique style and sound and that's her greatness, it's not to be watered down for anyone to digest. Her concerts are always sold out, that's enough. She sings what see wants and it's good enough. That's like someone telling you, I'd like to see you doing plumbing work instead of RUclips because your beard looks more like that of a plumber person. Come on man. Just love people for who they are and move on. I think Bon Jovi is a great band, but it's not my kind of music and that's it. I'm not going to change them or suggest they stop screaming, that's them, and people love them for who they are! To us who love her, she's a goddess of song and untouchable, like Kelly Clarkson is to her devotees!
