Some of the Chan Clan kids and Charlie Chan were voiced by actual Asian American performers with ace detective Charlie Chan being voiced by familiar actor Keye Luke (blind Master Po in the David Carradine Kung Fu series) and the oldest son Henry was played by Robert Ito of the Quincy M.E. series. The kids did not practice martial arts or work as servants for a positive change than the past cartoon portrayals of Asian characters.

Saturday mornings were more than just the cartoons, we had the toy company commercials with all the big brands competing against each other with great toy advertising. Cereal commercials, Mcdonalds hamburgers advertising and School House Rock! It was a time in history that can never be duplicated by the cartoons alone. We did not know at the time that we were living through a very historical moment.

Because they didn’t really have any competition back then. Up until the 1980’s, H&B had 80% percent of the cartoon viewership. It’s why they were pumping out so many shows during the 70’s; hence all the clones. Even though most of their 70’s shows only lasted a single season( except wait till your father gets home ), it didn’t really matter because H&B was such a monopoly that they had to rip off themselves, because they were all there was

My personal favorites: Scooby Doo, Josie & The Pussycats, The Funky Phantom, Speed Buggy, and Clue Club. I actually didn’t see Butch Cassidy until the late ‘80s, when USA aired it on their Cartoon Express compilation show.
My least favorites: Jabberjaw (at least until I got older and watched the reruns), the space-age treatment of Josie and the Partridge Family, and Captain Caveman.

Interesting alternate Cartoon series attempts back then at Scooby Doo. Herculoids, a cool series. I haven't gotten a chance to see some of these yet. Thanks. Scooby Doo's horror theme remained consistent for that franchise thankfully after all the series made, in that they most times didn't span out into just regular crimes or non-horror mysteries.

In the UK (IIRC) we only got Fangface, New Shmoo, Captain Caveman (possibly the best and the one that entered the cultural zeitgeist), Goober and the Ghost Chasers, The Funky Phantom and Jabberjaw and only CC was run on repeatedly over the next decade or so.
I like the titles to Butch Cassidy, the animation and art seems a step up from other show intros of the time, some rotoscoping going on?
And did I imagine a number of crossovers at the time? I'm sure Scooby met the team from Goobers at one point.

    • @GENXPERIENCE
      @GENXPERIENCE  6 месяцев назад +2

Love that you mentioned Rotoscoping, as I didn't have time...but it is such a unique technique used during the time and through the very early 80s. Yes, the opening Credits to BOTH Butch and Josie used Rotoscoping for when the band plays. It gives that fluid realistic human motion that I think made us buy into it more. Scooby did meet SPeed Buggy and more recently Funky, not sure about Goober (but quite possible) Thanks for the comment.

Interesting how the Scooby Doo characters were copied in the other shows, not only in personality, but looks, such as Shaggy and Tinker. Some, like Jabberjaw, I thought were just too silly. Dottie is my absolute favorite in Clue Club because she's sassy and spunky, but the only thing they really did wrong in the show is have the older kids act as jerks to Dottie, but its understandable, because in that line of work, you make enemies, so that was their way of protecting Dottie.

CC in Live Action would be interesting...especially if they get Dottie's voice actor Tara Talboy involved, since David Joliffe(Larry) and Patricia Stitch(Pepper are older now.
The only thing I'd really change is instead of Larry, Pepper, and D. D. act like jerks to Dottie is have them have a more heart to heart on why they don't want her on the field with them, because that actually could have backfired on them in a few ways.@@GENXPERIENCE

Hello there! I just discovered your channel. Great job on analyzing all these cartoons. One of my friends once told me that, in his opinion at least, the cartoon Meatballs & Spaghetti from the early 1980s was also a late addition to the emulators of Scooby-Doo. Meatballs & Spaghetti were a husband-and-wife team (matching their names, a big rotund long-haired guy and his hot blond thin wife) who were in a touring rock band with a dog playing the drums. The dog acted as the comic relief character in most episodes. Their vehicle was a mobile home, or RV, as they say, in which they travelled from town to town. The show was in re-runs several times in the 1990s and into the '00s in my area. It used the rock band trope and had a music video once per episode much like Jem had later.

It was even noted Rodan's The Thinker would appear in Archie comics outside Riverdale High, and that Dobie would pose with it as well.
From there, the Archie gang was derived from the Andy Hardy movies. Archie was Andy Hardy (MIckey Rooney) and Betty was Judy Garland. Jughead was derived from a sidekick named Geezy or something.
Reggie was added solely to be Archie's Rival, and Veronica would have two "origins" on how she came to be in Riverdale.
It's always been noted she was designed after debutante Veronical Hall.
What this does do is establish a connection between two of the most enigmatic cartoon characters, Shaggy and Jughead, that connection being Gilligan.

Because most of these aired several years before I was born or only a few years afterwards, I didn't get to see any of these cartoons until they came on in re-runs Weeknights and Sunday mornings on The USA Cartoon Express when throughout the '80s and then a few more of them on Cartoon Network in the late '90s when I was in college. Josie & The Pussycats was the only one I got to see in re-runs on Saturday mornings. I never watched a full episode of Shmoo or Fangface, so I can't make any judgement on either of those. My favorite show among the Scooby-Doo clones that I HAVE SEEN on this list, is a tie between Clue Club and Jabberjaw because I felt they each took the whole mystery-solving adventure trope into a more creative direction with intriguing stories and characters. At this point, I wouldn't mind if Warner Bros animation were to take a break from trying to update Scooby or The Looney Tunes for awhile and reboot Clue Club instead.

100% with you on CC...maybe even Live Action. I saw a lot of them in the late 70s and LOTS of Sat Reruns in the 80s

One more to add to the list: Casper and the Teen Angels.

That counts as a Scooby-Doo Clone?

I had to look it up, as I didn't remember it. I know Casper, for sure, but him as a guardian ghost to 2 cops in the future was new to me. Although a nice find, not sure I would give it the teen mystery solver treatment, but thanks for "clueing" me in.

I watched most of these religiously when they were originally on. But I have no memory of Clue Club. So for me . . .
    Captain Caaaaaavemaaaaaan!

Clue Club was my favorite of the ‘also rans’. Wish we had a chance to see Dottie get old enough to go out on adventures without using Woofer and Wimper as excuses to get to a crime scene. 😉

Jabberjaw was my favorite, but you left out Inch High Private Eye (though not sure the sidekicks were teens so maybe that's why), though Clue Club and Speed Buggy hold special places in my heart due to USA doing reruns of them on their Cartoon Express which is how I saw a lot of these cartoons for the first time. Captain Caveman was also a fav though I never cared for the Teen Angels as much, and while I became aware of Funky Phantom, Goober, and Josie later they never really captured my heart the same way (though Fangface came close). I was not aware of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids. That one never aired (to my knowledge) on USA's Cartoon Express or anywhere on cable at the time. (Maybe due to some licensing issues) as I recall all the others (except maybe Fangface, I think I just saw it syndicated somewhere) on Cartoon Express at one point or another. I was also unaware Shmoo had his own show, I didn't see him until The Flinstones meet the Shmoo where I remember Fred and Barney as cops, where Fred Flintstone had his much toned down more kid friendly 80s personality.
