    I felt the same way about a j 185 I just played. I went back and bought it. My first question was, “is this better than a burst?” Incredible percussive sound!

    I’m looking at a 000-18 and J45. Which would you pick if you had to choose?

    • @guitarmovies
      @guitarmovies  2 года назад

      That's such a hard choice because they sound quite a bit different. The Martin is definitely the "better" guitar in terms of feel and construction. But that Gibson has such a great sound. Playing style will be a huge consideration. I think if I absolutely had to pick one, it would be the Martin. I'd say I'm 50% fingerpicking and 50% strumming, and the dynamics on the Martin are incredible. And its body style is easier/more comfortable to play. It does get a little boomy on the low end when strumming, though. If I did more/heavier strumming styles, I'd go Gibson for sure. And it has such a wonderfully balanced sound. If I needed a guitar to record with, I'd also go with the Gibson. The Martin is brighter, and the Gibson is a warmer, more subdued tone. Finally, the neck differences are dramatic, with the Gibson being fatter. The Martin is thinner and much silkier to play. Again, it's a super tough choice, and I would be very, very happy with either one. If you can, play them both. That'll make the choice a little bit easier since your hands and ears will be your guide.

    I know people expect perfection for the money that these guitars cost but I genuinely don't mind seeing the odd tool mark or imperfections, it's a reminder that the guitar was hand built and not rolled off a CNC production line.

      Agreed! I like the proof of a handmade instrument, but not when it looks like a beaver gnawed on it.

    Are you putting Lollars into the Special? Or leaving the neck pick up out by choice?

    • @guitarmovies
      @guitarmovies  2 года назад +1

      I'm leaving the neck pickup out. It makes a pretty big difference, and I was on the bridge pickup 90% of the time anyway. I might put a hot Seymour Duncan P90-sized humbucker in the bridge, but I haven't decided.

      @@guitarmovies How does the sound of your Junior'd Special sound compared to your Eastman ?

    • @guitarmovies
      @guitarmovies  2 года назад +1

      In terms of sustain, I'd say they're equal now. The Eastman still has more clarity and dynamics, but that's the Lollar pickup.

  • @casualplay8555

    What made you take out the neck pickup in your les paul special ?

    • @guitarmovies
      @guitarmovies  Год назад +1

      I had an Eastman single pickup guitar, and it had so much more sustain and clarity. I'd read about how multiple pickups can impede string vibration due to their magnetic fields, but I never really believed it made that much of a difference. As an experiment, I took out the Special's neck pickup, and it definitely made a big difference. More sustain for sure. It has a more clear, slightly brighter sound to it. When I had both pickups in, I still was on the bridge 90+ percent of the time anyway. So I've just stuck with the bridge pickup and now I have a Les Paul Special Junior.
