For those complaining about the Frontier being outdated and lacking technology, that's less things that will break. The VQ engine is proven, the transmission is proven and it comes with a locking rear differential. This is a man's truck. No frills. Just solid as a rock. And Nissan still sells the hell out of this outdated truck. American made by the way.
Very well said. Trucks used to be built like this but somewhere along the way we lost the focus of a pickup truck meant. So now we have $70k+ picks up that focus on street jewelry appeal rather than workability and simplicity. Ridiculous in my opinion
You are correct. I'm on my second Frontier. Just bought a 2018 blacked out midnight edition. Reliable, versatile, a monster in the snow. Over all a massively under rated truck.
Yes you won't find any active learning transmission controlling your shift points here. No torque convertor failures or transmission shuddering like the Colorado. This is the last mid size transmission that has normal behavior and like you say, is now rated number one for reliability. This and the Tundra which is the other old school truck that was never updated to the nonsense active learning transmission to please CAFE and EPA. If you plan on buying a mid size and want to keep it when its out of warranty then look no further.
Spenser Hawk I just purchased this exact truck 2 hours ago. 18 with 22000mi on it. I had a 14 SV Crew V6 and like an idiot traded it away for a Hyundai Veloster. Well tonight I got back into a Frontier with the Pro4X package and I’m ecstatic. I drove a new 19 Canyon 2wd first and it was easily 7k more. Nice truck but the Frontier is just right.
I have a 2001 crew cab se and a 2018 pro 4x. I got the 2018 due to how reliable and tough my 2001 is. Hell i couldnt even bring myself to trade my old frontier in because, yeah it has over 250,000 miles on it, but it still runs good as new. Maintenance cost is never an issue. Love these trucks.
I have one and love it. I don't care about tech goodies so it's fine. It's the perfect go anywhere, anytime vehicle. The 4wd system is pretty formidable and better than just about anything else stock. With a tire upgrade and a minor suspension upgrade, it becomes virtually unstoppable.
I like it. Sure it's been around as long as LeBron James has played in the NBA, but that doesn't mean it's a bad vehicle. It's the only TRUE midsize truck left in the US. The rest of 'midsize' trucks keep getting larger and more expensive due to useless bells and whistles. It's a TRUCK. Frontier's are not supposed to be luxurious SUVs (which most full size trucks are becoming more and more).
I just got the exact same truck, same color same everything , ill tell you though, coming from a less than wealthy background finally getting something new to myself. (Not 2000 or older ) this truck is a dream to myself. I got 4 wheel drive and that's really all i need. 👌
Good review on a good truck. Nissan has the bugs worked out, and should keep this design for a long time. It is good that there is a pickup that is not crammed with gadgetry.
I've taken this truck to the track and have beaten tacomas and some other V8 trucks. Had mine for 3 years so far with 26K miles and not a single problem. I can manage 15 seconds in a quarter mile.
Excellent review. I’m looking at this and having difficulty telling the difference between the interior of this truck and my recently purchased 2011 xterra. The cabin and set up is almost identical. Since Nissan has discontinued the xterra I’ll definitely be looking at this frontier when I’m ready to change vehicles. My vehicle strategy is always buy used and I hang on to vehicles for at least ten years. So I’ll keep this review in mind.
No way! Honestly, I was an idiot for driving in the vortex. Luckily I didn't have any vehicle issues. Did the oil in your Honda eventually thaw out and return to normal?
Solid and really fun to drive. Gas mileage is not too great, but its a truck! I'm glad i decided to own one after driving it as a rental for a week, reason that there was no other vehicle available at the time. 2015 pro 4x.
Surprised Nissan hasn’t overhauled this truck yet. I mainly see older people driving them, which makes sense. I had one as a rental and the gas mileage was awful, the seats just felt like 2008 material wise. The ride wasn’t terrible though. I was annoyed my SV didn’t even have an mpg gauge!
As long as it plays my music and pairs with my phone reliably i could care less how big or fancy the infotainment is. Pioneer makes better and faster units than a lot of OEMs anyway if you really care about that stuff
It appears you were in 4x4 mode while driving on paved road, and when you were parked, you were still in 4x4 mode, did you experience any binding or drive train wind up? or did you ever feel the vehicle jerk forward suddenly when it released? or did it take a while to get back into 2wd? You mentioned cruising at 70mph, were you still in 4x4 mode? I believe It is not recommended to exceed 62 mph in 4hi mode in a Frontier
I really like that truck thinking of getting one in the beautiful Chicago winter I went to see the Colorado Z71 this past weekend, the price is well over $38,000 way to expensive when I can get this Nissan for $27,000.
I do love the Frontier. But be careful, the Colorado might be more expensive, but it is more updated. The interior of the Frontier feels like it was made in the 80s/90s, which is why I love it so much, but it's not for everyone. Anyway, good luck on your purchase. You're choosing between two excellent trucks, so I think you'll be happy either way
This truck takes you back to the mid 90's for mid size trucks, but I've driven a 92 Corolla and a drive a 03 GMC Envoy, to think this is dated compared to what I've been driving makes me laugh. I think this is a perfect midsize with some bells and whistles to get you by and be happy with. Happy trails guys!
These trucks savings aren't in the new market but second is where it's at. You can find a pro-4x for 26K maybe lower with under 30k miles easy. I have 2007 frontier XE 4 banger and the interior is still the same. My truck just won't quit. I tried to blow the engine still solid as a rock...😂
I mainly watched for the rear seat room, as I have 3 children one is 9 and the 2 others are 5 I've been thinking of trading my car in for one but was told they don't have room. From seeing you sit back there seemed fine, but hard to tell without looking in person yet
I think they'd probably fit fine, although the backseat isn't super comfortable. You have to sit fairly upright. It is a great truck though, so I'd HIGHLY recommend you go check it out in person.
I have 2 kids 4 and 2 year old they fit just fine I had a 2006 4x4 le frontier traded it a month ago got 2017 sv 4x4 frontier I love these trucks u will too
Just bought a 2019 pro4x its a great truck in not a bunch bs i dont want anyway. It has all the tech i need 4x4 rear locking diff bilstein shocks bluetooth heated seats leather power evevrything and sunroof cant think of anything else id want
Good review there I just wish they would overhaul the entire truck it’s old design is not aging well also wanted to ask if they ever have any of the new Nissan Titans you could try out would love to hear your comments on those and please keep up the good work
Never seen a Titan on a rental car lot; however, I did see one earlier this week at the Auto Show and it looked amazing! Hopefully someday soon I'll get a chance to drive one. Do you own one?
That is a thermometer. Not a thermostat. One measures temperature, the other changes temperature around a setpoint as well as measuring the temperature. There is no internal thermostat in this truck as it's not climate controlled. It's 100% a simple thermometer with a digital output. You sound ignorant when you talk about the "gear shift type" lever in the Jeep. It's more dependable than an electronic transfer case selector. There's a reason why Jeep uses those.
Good video, but since you are asking for quality criticism: you failed to mention that the truck comes with a rear diff (or at least didn't highlight it enough for me to remember it). Thats a big deal for off roaders. Otherwise, good job :)
I like the "oldness". Its the only midsize you can still get with a manual transmission. Which is stronger than the automatic janco they have on it. Electronics tend to start failing around the decade mark which is why inlike simple mechanical vehicles like the frontier. I may be in the market for a midsize soon...ill be taking a hard look at the fronteir
Crew cab has 4 full doors and a shorter loading bed, while the king cab has the half rear doors and a longer bed. The rear seat on the King cabs are smaller.
Wow this truck has been on the same platform for almost 20 years with little if any updates, I guess if it's not broke don't fix it mantra. I owned a 2005 pathfinder which is similar in design and that was a lemon so was a 05 murano and 06 Maxima and last 13 Maxima, so for me Nissan is no longer welcome. Great review non the less 😊
Neither, the guys and gals at my local Enterprise have just been very nice to me. I don't even ask, they just give me 4x4s whenever the road conditions are bad.
I bought my 2018 fronty SV 4x4 6 speed stick back December 21st. Brand new had to go through a Nebraska dealer being they had the only manual transmission truck within 500 miles of me. Anyways... I dont know if it's because the truck isnt truly broken in yet or if I'm just not getting the shifting down or what but I'm only getting 8 miles a gallon in town...currently the truck has 1800 miles on it. The dealer drove it to my house so they put the first 500 miles on and our winter has been pretty bitter in south dakota...and I know weather plays a factor in economy. Also have had the truck switched into 4 wheel high majority of ownership so far due to the good bit of snow we've been getting. Lot to read I know I'm sorry guys and thanks
Tons of them out there with high mileage. I've got a 2008 4x4 crew SE long bed with over 250,000 on it now and plan to get another 100,000 on it before I retire it. Only things I've done to it mechanically are replacing the radiator on it around 100,000 after I found out about the potential trans cooler leak in the earlier models (Pre 2010 models) Luckily no issue and no strawberry milkshake in my truck. If you get a 2010 or newer I hear there is no potential trans cooler issue. Also replaced front wheel bearing hubs and ball joints. Also have of course replaced brakes and tires. It's been a pretty great truck imo! And It replaced my all time fav truck, my previous 2001 Toyota Tundra extended 4x4 limited. I loved my first gen tundra but if I'm honest my frontier has ben a more reliable truck. My tundra suffered an overhead cam issue at around 225,000 that pretty much toasted the engine. Both are great trucks and I almost bought a Tacoma because I loved the tundra so much but couldn't justify the price, and after a good bit of research I found the frontier to be a better truck for me in almost all categories compared to the Tacoma accept resale value and looks. And over the years the frontiers looks have grown on me and I kinda quite like its look now and think its look has aged well. Anyhow sorry for the long rant reply but as you can see I'm Very fond of my Fronty and honestly I will probably buy another one when my current truck finally gets retired. I'm crossing my fingers that nissan will bring a diesel frontier to the states, as that would be my perfect truck.
Thanks for the replies fellas! I'm glad to hear that they last a long time, I've always trusted Toyotas and Nissans. And I'm glad y'all have you enjoyed your trucks!
I've got a 2015 Frontier 4.0 V6. Currently at 26k miles. I drive 70 miles everyday and I'm happy with it. On a full tank of gas mainly on the highway I can manage 350-400 Miles on one tank. I love mine from top to bottom. Would definitely recommend.
My first Frontier was a used 2010. It had 30,000 when I bought it and I added 155,000 miles over next 5 years. At 185,000 it started and ran great. Virtually everything in the engine was original. Traded it in when I saw the 2018 black midnight edition. For the money, this truck has no competition. Nothing is even close.
It is outdated and while I can't see myself spending $30K on something so outdated I would spend $23K tops and thats because it's a good truck. If I was going to a 4x4 and shelling out $32K + then yeah i'm going to get a modern something else but heck of a truck and deal if you get the lesser model.
My job chooses where I rent from, otherwise I would try out Hertz. And, Enterprise does have points. I'm saving up right now to rent from their "exotics" location. I'm hoping to get a Ferrari.
They would have to jack the price up and likely abandon the manual transmission on the V6 4x4. Paying more and reaping a nicer dash with an Android auto 12" screen is just not worth it for a vehicle like this.
Insurance has me in one for rental following car accident. Been in it for a month. I love the truck, but not the MPG. It's everything a truck should be except for the gear shift in the center console as opposed to steering wheel column.
Came back from the Nissan garage on a snow storm yesterday and i was like: shit i am proud of my choise! 2019 pro4x we have a lot of good ride to come! 😍 fuck my 2015 ford escape! 😂 i was about 80 000 kilo and feel the problem incoming.
In Nissan terms, they call this the D40 Frontier. I kinda like them but barely. I own a 2000 Frontier regular cab (D22 chassis, the previous gen) and love the fuel economy that I get from the 4-cylinder & 5-speed. I average 24-27 MPG. I cannot get the same economy out of the D40 Frontier (current gen) no matter what engine combination or cab configuration. They are much larger, taller, wider & heavier than the truly compact 1st Gen Frontier trucks like my own. You might as well get a 1/2 ton truck since they are 80% the size of them. However despite all of this, the Frontier is the cheapest way into getting a brand new truck in the U.S.: $20-$21K for a King Cab, 4-cylinder, 5-speed, no options. Even that model will not get the fuel economy that my current one will. The laws of physics and aerodynamics hurt today's Frontier. The one I own unfortunately is an end of an era, the end of the 1980s size of compact pickups that doesn't exist anymore. Great review though!
I wanted a Frontier but the V6 is a gas hog. They had a prototype with a Cummins turbodiesel which would have beem amazing. Instead I have a Chevy Colorado duramax that gets 30-38mpgs
For those complaining about the Frontier being outdated and lacking technology, that's less things that will break. The VQ engine is proven, the transmission is proven and it comes with a locking rear differential. This is a man's truck. No frills. Just solid as a rock. Bought a 2019 Nissan Pro 4x two weeks ago for $29k out the door. I was looking for a V6 midsize truck 4x4 with a proven history and this was it!!
John Wick drives a Pro4x? I can die happy now. 😀. Congratulations by the way. Amazing truck. I know you're gonna love it.
I love my 2017 Pro 4x Frontier! Yes, gas mileage could be better, but its a solid truck as you mentioned in your review.

Yup. My f150 gets better mpg and it's a V8
The Frontier is a simple and reliable truck. I have a 2016 SV with all features, and its really cool. And I get 22 MPG.

I bought a 2018 used Nissan Pro 4x for $21k out the door. Buy Nissan used because they depreciate fast.
Have a 2019 SV crew cab. The gas mileage sucks and the road and wind noise sucks
Question, why don't you rent from like Hertz or Avis to earn points to get free rentals? Enterprise sucks
My job chooses where I rent from, otherwise I would try out Hertz. And, Enterprise does have points. I'm saving up right now to rent from their "exotics" location. I'm hoping to get a Ferrari.
@@100RentalCars Cool man! Keep up the great videos!
Thanks!
Nissan should redesign the frontier because it looks like the 2010 pathfinder. And the technology isn’t that great.
Donavin Roberts that makes the Frontier an outdated vehicle
They would have to jack the price up and likely abandon the manual transmission on the V6 4x4. Paying more and reaping a nicer dash with an Android auto 12" screen is just not worth it for a vehicle like this.
I hope they never do. The truck is perfect.
Insurance has me in one for rental following car accident. Been in it for a month. I love the truck, but not the MPG. It's everything a truck should be except for the gear shift in the center console as opposed to steering wheel column.
The rear seat folds down too
Really? I'm sorry I missed that.
Came back from the Nissan garage on a snow storm yesterday and i was like: shit i am proud of my choise! 2019 pro4x we have a lot of good ride to come! 😍 fuck my 2015 ford escape! 😂 i was about 80 000 kilo and feel the problem incoming.
Pro 4 x with no roof rack
I have a Pro 4x with no roof rack. They're fuggin ugly with it.
Do the pro4x come in manual?
No, no manual option on the 2020 Frontier.
Is it just me but I watch a lot of car review guys and there all 6 foot.🚶♂️
We're all related. 😄
Audio books LMAO
This truck's ugly as hell! .................lol, j/k. It's a beautiful truck and much less expensive than the Toyota Turd!
I wanted a Frontier but the V6 is a gas hog. They had a prototype with a Cummins turbodiesel which would have beem amazing. Instead I have a Chevy Colorado duramax that gets 30-38mpgs
Nice "car"
Thats a funny looking car, I never seen one with a cargo bed an tail gate
That interior is dated
Yep. I hate to say it, but the 2019 is the same too.
Only 3 real trucks. RAM,Ford,Chevy. 👍
Define real...?
Replace RAM with Toyota. Fiat trucks are no good.
That must be why they hold their value so well. 😂
Nissan is crap I would buy a Toyota Tacoma now I’m turned off on my Nissan junk
You need to proofread what you write.
Toyota is having transmission problems on their new 3rd gens.
