*I missed the lumbar support! It has the lever on the inside part of the driver’s seat! 👍* Thanks for watching! With the Frontier being the oldest midsize truck by far...would you still consider it over the competition?
@@arbl1992 You can swap tons of stuff from xterras and pathfinders. I'm finding some xterra fold down front seats for my 18 frontier. As well as a pathfinder heated steering wheel and center consol + the pathfinders shifter with "manual mode"
What's wrong with push button? I can leave my key on me and the engine running while I run into a quick run? The car also shuts down if anyone tries to take it without a key. I have this truck. But my Infiniti M37 is a Push button. I don't see how it's gay. It actually eats more gas if you keep taking out your keys and starting up the engine. So I leave the engine running rather than turning it off just to run in the store to grab a snack.
@@khmerbraveheart It doesn't. After about 7 seconds running on idle your engine will have consumed more than it takes to start it. This myth has been debunked a while back.
@@IbangedYaMama Is that right? Where was the video? But regardless. I don't see anything wrong with a push button to even complain about. Don't you think?
i love the simplicity and lack of gimmicks and fancy tech. just a straight up quality truck, good frame, locking diff, and decent power, all at an affordable price.
Drove my 2008 that I bought in 2009 just shy of 560,000 miles. Never dripped a drop of oil. Ran right in and bought another specifically because it’s essentially the same now.
Apparently not, our 2013 desert runner has one electronic problem after another. Ac switch cutting out every time it’s turned off now, electric door lock button going out, airbag light blinking started this week, rust where there shouldn’t be.. illogical under hood layout, difficult to work on.. never felt confident in this truck. never again Nissan.
In terms of reliability and value the Frontier is not getting the respect that it deserves. Great running and dependable is my experience. The way I see it, after the onset of the apocalypse and after electromagnetic weapons have decimated everything high-tech ... my Frontier will still get me around at least untill the tank empties ... which in a Frontier will happen fairly quickly but great MPG was never part of the deal.
Pretty sure both trucks will be dead after an emp. Any vehicle that doesnt use a points type ignition or similar caveman tech probably wont be running.
@A M - Your right, it's not all that bad, my 07, well maintained since new, manages about 18 mpg combined. Don't put that much mileage on it and so the mpg not a huge concern, and is offset IMO by the positives of dependability , solid construction and otherwise low operating costs. Zero complaints after 11 years.
@@benpitt3012 maybe wait for the new 2021 model that is supposed to be coming out, maybe that will be more fuel efficient, which is the only major drawback (imo) of the current Frontier.
Nissan Frontier = Fully boxed titan frame, Dana 44 locking rear, Dana front diff and spicer transfer case. Tacoma = C channel frame , rear drum brakes and toyota tax.
Nissan is screwing the pooch. Old tech is not necessarily a good thing with the competition. Sure, the ranger sucks, but the colorado/canyon and tacoma are hands down better trucks.
Just purchased my 2nd generation Frontier. I've also had a '03 Xterra SE with the old Naturally aspirated V-6 which only put out I believe 176hp for a heavy truck. This, by far, is the best product I've bought from Nissan. I own the SV 4x4 Magnetic Black and couldn't be happier with it. The motor is strong, the truck is stiff...just no nonsense. In this day and age people are soft....this truck isn't. Great product. No need for sensors that will go south in the end....we live in the country and this beauty does it all. Even drove the Tacoma before I made the choice on this one. Durability, longevity, and btw we also own a 2013 Siverado Z71. Thanks for the video, good stuff.
Best truck value out there. You can get a 4x4 crew cab SV with heated seats, power everything, BT, satellite radio, rear camera, alloys, bed liner, and tow package for $27,000 brand new.
I recently bought a 2019 Pro 4x with the premium package. I got the dealer to throw in a bed extender and B-B 84 month 100k mile warranty. I ended up getting it for 5K off of MSRP. I've been driving a 2013 Silverado Crew Cab Z71 and really loved it, but it was not a reasonable daily driver and was difficult to maneuver & hard to get in and out of (had a 1.5" front lift - my wife, kids and I are all sub-average height). I also grew tired of trying to maneuver the Chevy into the grarage. The bed height of the Silverado also presented some issues for me (short dude). So Far the Pro 4x has been great! Amazing off road capability! I did own a 2000 Jeep Wrangler sport and I have to say that the Pro 4X with the rear locker climbs better and is better in the soft sand than the Wrangler and is a lot more comfortable and infinitely better on highway. The Frontier fits in the garage without any issues. I test drove the 2019 Tacoma Base and TRD models. Amazing that they did not have a moon roof (available on the TRD) or power adjustable seats. The TRD was priced around 47K. I liked the drive of the Tacoma, but not the looks--particularly that extensive nose projection. I prefer the power train in the Frontier. It felt more responsive and the torque advantage of the Frontier made a big difference in its performance. Off road the Tacoma was more smooth and refined, but the traction control system was obnoxiously intrusive at times off road and may be a technology nanny that may offend and annoy experienced off road drivers. The seating position of the Tacoma was not flattering to my short stature and was the ultimate deal breaker. I couldn't adjust the seat enough to eliminate feeling like a 5 year old sitting in the Tacoma's driver's seat. The bed height of the Tacoma was nearly identical to that of my Silverado. The bed of the Frontier is low enough that I nearly reach to the center region of the bed without a step latter or having to climb into the bed. I do wish the Frontier offered lane keep assist, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, Apple CarPlay, better MPG (although I'm averaging 18+ overall) etc. etc. My Pro 4x so far seems to be an honest, albeit old, truck. Just a raw, tough old truck that hopefully will be there for my grandkids to drive. One more thing, for my size, the seats in the Frontier are perfect. My wife and two teen kids were in it today for 6 hours (3 of them off road) in reasonable comfort - no complaints.
@@jackinla7747 Its been a really solid truck. For the '08 year there was a recall for coolant leaking into the transmission and the fuel gauge float unit going bad but other than that its just been regular maintenance. I will say the paint quality leaves something to be desired.
@@red6743 thanks for your response and feedback. I saw a Frontier on my way to work and I thought, thats a good size truck for Home Depot trips, etc... Thanks for the info!
I had a 2000 Frontier mt for 13 yrs, most reliable truck I've ever had, taught my kids to drive mt in it and it was very forgiving at their learning stage. Traded in with over 100k with no issues. I drive a 2014 Taco now which is a good truck but there are times I miss my old fronty when it comes to seat comfort, the Taco just doesn't have it.
I learned how to drive in my dads 06 nismo edition. Bought that truck from him when my HS car crapped out. I park in grass and missed an oil leak. She spun a bearing two weeks ago at almost 300k miles. I only ever had to replace a coil pack, serpentine belt, and a wheel bearing up until then. Bought my dads 2020 pro4 today. I’ll miss my manual trans but frontiers are solid trucks. Can’t hardly find used ones for sale.
Just got a pro4x. No frills. Nice responsive handling and quick off the mark. Brakes could be a little stiffer but still good. Arm rest could be a little longer. Great sound system.
I just put new brakes on mine and it's much better at braking then the stock brakes pads and rotors it came with.. that's was my only dislike before it's great now
Came here from watching the 2020 Chevy Colorado>2020 Toyota Tacoma, and now I'm here watching this 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Review. Loving these reviews! Keep up the great work!
I own a 2018 Tacoma, ironically this “old” truck has some features that my “newly redesigned Tacoma” does not have. Like rear backup radar and power adjustable seats.
I have this rented on a work truck and agree with your review entirely. I was like "Damn, this thing is kind of simple and has some cheap materials, but it feels like a solid truck that would get you through some shit!". I'm actually pretty pleased with it, and like the basic design and the sturdy capable feel with good power range. Thanks for the detailed review!
The main reason I'd want one of these is due to the fact that because it is mostly unchanged for the years it's been out, there are plenty of parts out there for the vehicle.
And hopefully I won't need warranty work, but if I do, the mechanics will most certainly have knowledge of such and old design. Good luck at Ford with that new blown Ranger. I never had one good experience with them. The lying bothered me as much as the incompetent mechanics.
Just ordered a white Pro-4X - for the purpose of daily commute and overland trips. After a long discussion with me, myself, and I, torn between Tacoma TRD Pro vs Pro-4X vs ZR-2 vs new Ranger FX4 (and Yes, I've looked at Gladiator too...at $60k..that is too much for questionable quality of Jeep), I've decided I needed something that can tank through Los Angeles traffics as well as sand dunes and rocks of the Death Valley desert. FYI, I've test driven all - and have driven alot on 2017 TRD Sport from work. Winning points are as followings: 1. Dana 44 rear and locker - cant beat that! 2. Beefier Transfer case (ZR-2 one is better but ZR-2 does NOT have sunroof~!) than Tacoma. 3. Yes, Sunroof...did I mention sunroof? Nicely tucked between roof rack where I can tie down Mad Max victims 4. Bilstein shocks. Personally I prefer them over Fox because of comfort (yes i will be spending over 90% of time on paved road). Fox is good on off road, but so as Bilstein - and its way more coushier than Fox. Personally! 5. Price - its reasonable...I wouldn't call $35~37k a low price but, it sure is better than close to $45k ~ $50k for TRD Pro or ZR-2...almost $10k cheaper. 6. No non-sense infotainment system (Toyota...you listening?)...well it really doesn't have one. I don't need one from the manufacturer. I can upgrade the infotainment system myself with 7" Samsung Galaxy and root it with CyanogenMod or SlimRoms - which will perform better than ANY infotainment system out there in the market - GUARANTEED! (it will cost me about $2~300 including a bracket - and few hours tuning it). 7. Reliable - nearly 15 years of design which is unchanged allowed Nissan to work out all the bugs - sure, it still looks pretty...I guess...it's like you are still dating your girlfriend from highschool into your mid-40s...oh, wait. 8. Ride quality - Much better than Tacoma for sure. Could be as good as ZR-2 if driven properly. On par with Ranger...and anything is better than Gladiator. 4.0L engine is much more livelier than that of Tacoma. Even though Ranger and ZR-2 is smoother (on 3.6L GM), Frontier is close enough...but it gets thirsty easily I hear. Anyhoo - you cannot go wrong with any of 4 trucks mentioned above - Gladiator too...just my take on it. May the 4X4 be with you.
@@robain79 Can't go wrong with either Taco or Fronti. I chose Fronti because of its tough undercarriage and no-frill approach - and cost most of all. When it comes to usage, you can't go wrong with either. Get one with the best deal.
I own a '15 sv cc I bought with 46k now at 64ish k and I love it. Crappy turn radius but mechanically reliable and thats a bigger concern for me. Talked to a few owners before I bought and they were all very happy with it. It has all the comforts I need/expect in a truck
Great reviews with your pickups. I want a V6 with a 4x4 (not AWD) and it came down to the Colorado and Frontier. Initially, I was all in the Chevy, but I changed my mine because the Frontier is SIMPLE and it works without breaking the bank.
The frontier may not have all the bells and whistle‘s that the newer trucks have but it is simply hard-core truck. The engine has great torque and is strong even for towing. The nice thing about this truck is it has the five speed and unlike the newer trucks isn’t always searching for gears. If you’re looking for a truck that is decently equipped and can take anything you want to throw out it, then this is the one. We’ve had Frontier’s in the family since 2007 and never had a problem in any way. They work, haul, tow all the time and have been flawless even at higher mileage.
I own a 2017 SV 4WD, bought it from a dealer last July for $21.5k w 35k miles on it. Great truck, haven't had any issues with it yet and drive all over VA, NC and SC with it. The 4 wheel drive works great in the snow too. I've done a couple of minor mods (backup camera, led fog lights). Yup, it's 'outdated' but compared to others and is in need of a redo in the states, the price is a steal and honestly, a truck should be a truck, not a caddy with so many bells and whistles its like driving a space shuttle. They seem to have worked all the bugs from when they did the 2nd gen design in 2005 with very minor updates, as stated, like the bluetooth, dual climate control, etc. I would have bought a 2018 Taco ext cab 4wd SR5 but that was more stripped down and the price on that was $27k.
I traded in my new 2016 Chevy Colorado for a new 2017 Nissan PRO-4X because of all the electronic issues I was having with the Colorado. Not one problem with the Frontier so far!
I have a 2010 Pro 4X. You can get 2 mpg more with 3 simple things. Good synthetic oil. Tonneau cover, and an AEM high performance flow dry air filter. If you want to use a tuner, you can use regular unleaded instead of mid grade. I did and kept the same gas mileage so it paid for itself in the first year.
@@PrimeAutotainment I get 21 to 22 mpg on the highway in 2WD and the truck will hold 85 mph up the 7%, approx 8 mile grade, to Eisenhower tunnel w/o flooring it or working hard. But it won't get 21 mpg doing that ;-)
At 18:49 you mentioned a very important differentiating feature of the VQ40 5 Speed tune. "It does NOT short change shifts and gets every bit of rev out" This is because this engine/trans tune was done way back in the days BEFORE oems were pressured by the EPA and CAFE goals. Yes this was before adaptive learning transmission that like to shift early, kill torque, or search gears endlessly (looking at you toyota) to get a couple extra MPG's. This transmission unlike the GM/Toy has NORMAL shift behaviors and is reliable. The Ranger might be the first modern transmission that offers good performance but it costs 10K more to get the features that this Pro 4X has. Plus it offers a MT. So IMO, both the 5 speed and MT offer decent performance on the Nissan. With the Tacoma, only the MT offers good performance. Their 6 speed auto is a hot mess. GM quit making the MT this year and only offers the problematic 8 speed that can shudder and have torque convertor failures. Yes there is yet another fluid fix for that but I have my doubts as for the longevity of that transmission. Its a dud if you ask me. Plus both the GM/Toy products are now less reliable then the Nissan. This is proven with the 2018 long term reliability ratings. This is a bullet proof truck. Only the Tundra will get you this kind of bullet proof truck. And that too is an old school truck that has not been updated in years.
Could not have said that any better. Bought a 2019 Pro 4X in December and could not be happier . If you want this truck buy NOW. Dealer told me the 2020 model will be redesigned.
I'd buy a 2nd gen Tacoma if I were looking for Tacoma's. Preferably 2012-2015. But I like my 2008 Nissan Pathfinder with 159k. Just have the dreaded timing chain whine.
Got a 2017 Pro-4X used at the beginning of the year, has been an amazing truck. Been at the beach with people getting stuck in the sand left and right so just for fun I kept the truck In 2WD and got through the same stuff truck where getting stuck in. This truck is very capable have towed a boat with full weight around 4,500 pounds no problem. And can tow out a stuck Titan V8 from the sand no problem. For the price it’s the best mid size truck out there.
Wow dude this is a really awesome review. Good speaking voice and pace. Seriously please keep it up! 👍 I’m 46 y.o. and looking to buy my first pickup truck and this is my 1st choice (this variant or SV or SL) over the Ridgeline. Oh I do hav a burning question- out of all the midsize trucks you’ve driven or reviewed, which would you say is most kid friendly? For example, are there any with rear seats that can lean back a little so kids can rest or sleep somewhat comfortably? And with booster seats? Thx.
Thanks so much, I truly appreciate it! Mmm good question! That’s tough. I can’t remember exactly how much space each truck has back there, but I think Tacoma is the smallest in terms of legroom and car seat friendliness. The Ridgeline has the softest ride and feels more like a car if that matters, it also has “stadium seats” so the backseat sits up higher relative to the front seats and gives people more visibility. I don’t believe any of them slow the backseat to recline at all unless you move to a full size Ram (not sure if anyone else does that). I really like the frontier simplicity and power train. You could probably take each one home for a night and throw the family in there to get a good feel for them. Good luck picking one!
I bought a 2013 pro 4x exactly the same as this one. I bought it used I love it. This truck is a great bargain as a used. truck. The refresh is coming to north america soon. In Australia its called the navara. It's been out for 2 years already. Bi- turbo diesel 4 cyl 332lbs/tq.
Fantastic review! I own a first gen Nissan Titan king cab and am considering going back to a Frontier and this review gave me some in depth information on this truck.
I think this truck is the best value in this segment. The new Ranger here in Canada is 50k with the Fx4 package. The Colorado Z71 about the same and so is the Tacoma Off road, forget about the TRD Pro. Forget about the Jeep Gladiator, it's pricing is outrageous. The Frontier has everything you need and nothing you don't. The Pro 4x will go offroad just fine in stock trim. It's dependable and not complicated to maintain. I'm seriously considering one.
Purchased a 2018 just like this one, minus the silly roof rack and leather seats. 21,000 miles on it but drives like new. Went from a 2003 f150 Lariat to this and don't miss it one bit! Would definitely recommend. Haven't gone offroading yet but I'm ready!
i LOVE my 2010 nissan frontier pro 4x. i never considered a nissan when truck shopping, until i came upon mine, and took it for a test drive. it was love at first sight and drive. i know it gets knocked for being dated, but i think of it more as a timeless design. its a handsome vehicle.
I had a 2014 Pro4x and just bought a 2019 Pro4x. Extremely happy. Soft but sturdy ride. These trucks don’t rattle. They just do what do really well. Pro reviews are usually “well it doesn’t have a push button start”. Who cares? I liked your review and I would take that truck over the others you mentioned.
The only flaw is having to say "Where do I sign?"...We're getting one of them very soon...Awesome truck..we want to put a bed rack on it so we can put a roof top tent there. I want as little wind resistance as possible so on the bed is the place to install it. We can still have the inside bed for storage...this truck is the best option
I love mine. I have the 4x4 with a camper shell. I bought it new for $24,000. It is the SV. I put a deer guards on, steps and the top rack! She goes everywhere. People are always complementing me on the gal.
I've got a 2012 Pro-4X. 105K on it now and it never has gone back to the dealer for ANYTHING! Best truck I've ever owned. I know I'll get another 100K of problem free miles. Knock on wood!!!
Drove top 3 I liked best.. of ALL new midsize trucks. Picked new Ranger XLT FX4 crew cab! Besides superior powertrain..design/technology & Fords excellent FX4 off rd package (like offered on F150s) just made it easier to choose. Ranger is expensive but u get what u pay for folks..as always. None of new trucks are a bad choice theres just a couple that are much superior.
I wish my wallet could afford a taco or full size - but I came across a 2016 frontier with only 13k miles one owner manual shift for $14,000 out the door- so no brainer I bought the Nissan Frontier and 2 weeks in -I’m very happy and my wallet is too!!!!!
i bought a 2016 frontier in 2018. but i dont need the 4X. it might be a simple truck. but iam a simple guy.. LOL. LOL but i would like a REAL posi trak. the off idle throttle response is very torquey
I have no issue with tech, I just never use it. The same way that I never use my phone for more than a few things. I really like Bluetooth. The lady at the dealership set it up for me. I didn't watch. She had most of the top buttons on her blouse unbuttoned. And I do miss the push button start. Eventually I'll stop looking for it.
When I saw this video posted, I said to myself “great, a nice no nonsense truck!” Then I watched it and you said the same things. Haha. The Frontier is great in my opinion. It’s not the prettiest, most luxurious, best riding or best handling truck out there, but it still looks good and gets the job done by doing what it was meant to do. I wish it had keyless access, and the safety tech, but it takes ya back to a time when trucks were trucks. I’m sure the next Frontier will have all the updated tech though. I agree with you about the color, it’s sharp! Great seeing this video!
Haha that’s great, we seem to think alike! It was really refreshing being in a truck like this. I enjoyed it but yeah I’m sure the new one will be decked out with a lot of available stuff. Thanks and have a great weekend!
I'm actually renting a 2019 Nissan Frontier right now due to a 80 year old lady t-boning my car thinking she could shoot across a 6 lane road from a side street and it's nice. I'm 5'11" and just over 200lbs. It feels like good height getting in and out. Seat is just right. Don't feel like I'm getting crushed nor do I feel like I'm gonna slide around. You really do feel like you become one with it when driving I don't care for the front bumper as it's more contoured the rest of the truck and looks out of place. Otherwise it's a blocky/muscular looking truck. Overall I'd recommend it.
I own this truck (a 2017 manual) and I love it. It's actually my 2nd Frontier, so I'm obviously a fan of this truck. It is BY FAR the best midsize truck option because of its proven reliability and capability, as well as just easy to use simplicity. Perhaps most importantly, the Frontier doesn't cost a fortune like its 3 competitors, which each have issues. I paid $32k otd for my truck, which is at least $7k less than a comparable Taco or GM twin, and the Ranger is even more absurdly priced than those. The Frontier is the only midsize truck I would own right now.
Very nice and thorough review. I had a Pro 4x Frontier a few years ago and traded it in on a new Xterra. Love my xterra and would absolutely get the frontier again. Great job again on the video.
I have Xterra, it's awesome though I wish turning radius was a bit better but other than that, the Xterra and Frontier are probably the ultimate no-nonsense vehicles today :P
There was no need to change it as it was near perfection except for the large turning radius. Built for Africa! Comfortable ride, great sounding stereo, too. Trustworthy when you find yourself in the middle of nowhere and that's important!
I bought this exact truck back in 2017, and it's been great to own. Nice looking, well put together, and fun to drive. I wanted something simple and easy to maintain, and this truck fits the bill perfectly. One question about the post-2017 models: why did they change the door handles on the Pro-4X to the cheap black plastic of the SV instead of the previous body-color handles like the ones on my truck? That was disappointing to see on what is an otherwise fantastic truck.
I noticed that too but with my 2019 white Pro 4X I think the black handles make it look better. Gives it some contrast. But no doubt much cheaper to make just one set (black) then a bunch of different color ones. But they feel cheaper to be sure. My 05 pathfinder had color matching and they felt more solid.
Ok, I'm glad someone else noticed the door handles besides me! Silly as it sounds, this is one of the features that made me really like the Pro 4X so much. The body-color door handles gave the truck a nice, "finished" look in my mind that some other trucks didn't have. So I was really surprised to see the 2018 with flat black handles. Not a big deal, but something that definitely caught my eye. Congrats on your 2019 model - you will love it!
I think they could squeeze this body out for another few years. Update the interior, new color options, and maybe some modern LED lights. I've had 3 Frontiers. No issues at all.
@@lenny7577 I test drove a 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-road, and it was....just ok. 1. Entirely to many buttons and switches for my taste. 2. The factory tires sucked. 3. The newish 3.5v6 had no power. I know it's better on paper, but the previous 4.0v6 they had was better imo. That's why I still love the Frontier. Its the only truck left with the big, unchanged, proven engine.
@MotorcycleMan think of it like a gun? Some people want the newest, latest and greatest design. Higher price, more electronics, fancier interior etc ....some people are perfectly happy with an old, outdated 1911.
I have a 2016 SV 4x4 with the value package. I don't get the hate for the Frontier. Sure, it's a little dated but it has everything I want in a vehicle. My friend has a Tacoma and while it has a bit more tech it does nothing worth the extra cost. Not to mention the Tacoma still has DRUM brakes in the rear! This is the least rattly vehicle I've owned. It rides smooth unless the roads are really rough. My biggest complaint about my Frontier is the gas mileage.
Nice review. As a loyal toyota owner, the price of a Tocoma is way out of my reach. Plus, today's trucks are made way to fancy for "fancy lads" and the Tocomas have swelled up to a size where I might as well go Tundra or F150. The top Tocoma trim has breached the 50 grand mark for a socalled compact truck thats almost as big as Chevy Silverado? With a more sane price point and it being closest to a true compact truck as you can get today, I'm going to give the Frontier a try and its at the top of my list. I still love Toyota but ,the price of all these trucks have gotten to be way out of hand. People who belly ache about how this truck is outdated and is lacking more bells and whistles crack me up. What the hell do they want, a tri-fin rear spoiler with special edition louis vuitton trim interior? Too many posers who buy an offroad truck that will never take them off road and use them as daily drivers in the city by metrosexual hipster types are to blame the prices of trucks running amok. Heck, I think ths cool truck has even too many luxury amenities than I need or want. Don't need leather interior or rockford sterio system. I've done more off roading with my Camry (I call, Ole Betsey) to go fishing and exploring than my hipster cousin with a fricken Raptor and my buddy with a TRD Pro and they're giving me crap because I'm about to pull the trigger in getting my Pro 4x. 🙄
Thanks Raymond! That’s great haha, excellent points. I don’t blame you one bit for going for a Frontier! Such a solid truck and great prices nowadays with discounts on new ones. Thanks again!
@@spartanswerve7575 I don't disagree with you that the Tacoma is the better truck. Remember, that I started out my original comment that I am a Toyota person? However, I disagree with you that a top trimmed truck that cost over 45 grand are worth every penny. They cost so much because people are willing to pay ridiculous prices and because people who really have no need for a truck making them the "in" vehicle have made them a high demand product. Did you ever believe that there would ever be a production truck breaking the 100 grand mark? Well, there are some today! Yes, I'd love a Tacoma, but I'm not going to pay the money for one when a Frontier is still a great truck that is up to par with its rivals offroading for a superior price and Everyone I know who has one loves the truck. Sell me a new Tacoma or even a Ford 4x4 for a comparable price and I'll take it, but that's never going to happen so Nissan wins me over for the sale. You say that the Tacoma is worth every penny... unfortunately, not everyone (especially me) has enough pennies to get one.
Have a 2015 Pro-4X bought new. Never had a single issue. Pull an enclosed car hauler at 6000 lbs well on level ground at 70 MPH around 2800 RPM. On steeper grades jumps up to 4000 RPM.
Was same for me. Wanted a midsize truck! Test drove them all in class 2× some even 3. Was easy decision after drove new Ranger! Superior powertrain..chassis..tech features..design/build quality feel. To name a few. Get what u pay for! The best costs a bit more. Love my '19 Ranger XLT FX4.
@@TheLegendandjaguar Yea they are awesome. It's over engineered . That's a good thing. Tuning can get 80hp more from simple hand tuner! Livernoismotorsports.com
@@Davido50 wow didn't know that, I jumped in the Tacoma, Tundra and Titan. Funny thing is I felt pretty good in the Ranger definitely have to give it a test ride. If wasn't for the upcoming Bronco, I would chose this as a winner. I think it's that Mustang engine that gives it that spark.
I’m looking into a pro 4x that was a “Canadian fleet” vehicle. They said Km were already set back to miles but navigation and temp reading was still different. Hmmm? Different, but has low miles and price seems right for my budget. Would appreciate a update on your truck sometime if you get a chance thanks
I was able to change the outside temp on the touch screen to Fahrenheit but haven't been able to figure out how to change the kilometers to miles. There is a setting on the touch screen to reset to factory settings but I haven't tried that yet without looking for more information. I suspect it's got to be an easy fix - It's electronic and I saw a video for a 2016 Murano and it was very simple to change - can't imagine Nissan would make 2 dash clusters.
I feel like the cons most people list about this truck are actually the pros. It's a low tech, no-nonsense truck. That is what I love about it. If you want luxury, there are plenty of other options. If you want a "truck", the Frontier is awesome. I used to own a 2004 Armada, which was a tremendous powerhouse of a truck at $35K. Now it got popular, and you can't touch a new one under $60K after they added all the creature comforts. Nissan priced that vehicle outside what I'm willing to pay. I hope that doesn't happen to the Frontier.
Seriously Nolan? Another fantastic review? I’ve always liked that truck. Was thinking of buying a used one, if I can find it in good shape. Used Frontiers are rarer than hens teeth in my area. People hang on to them, I probably would too. I’d go basic trim level with manual trans.
Thanks so much Vince, I appreciate it! No kidding...it seems like a very solid truck and sounds like they’re reliable as well. Good choice too...I definitely believe they’re hard to find!
There was no less than 3 slightly used 18 P4Xs within 15 miles of me when I bought my 18. It had 22k on the odo and it is a fantastic truck. My second Fronty.
Had a lot near me when I was looking but I wanted a 4x4 SV with value package which for some reason was hard to find. Ended up finding a 2016 with 18K miles and I paid $22K for it.
One of my employees has an older model of these and he loads it up with his compressor and air keg with all his tools and nail guns, you can’t even tell is hauling
I had a 2007. Good truck. Had 1 problem with the fuel sending unit....other than that. It ran good. The girl I sold it to is still driving it...nismo edition. But it needs to be updated badly...15 years is to long for a body style on any vehicle
2016 Crew Cab 4X4 owner here: My list of requested updates: 1) 7 speed transmission for higher final drive ratio when cruising on the interstate. This thing achieves best mpg at 55 mpg on country roads. A 7 speed would make it a proper 80-90 mph cruiser. 2) Direct injection on the V6, which Nissan already has on the newer V6's in the pathfinder for even better economy. 3) Raise and lengthen the rear seat. There's plenty of room to do so and would properly fit an adult. Add a slight recline to the rear seat. Also, add center headrest for middle child. 4) Enlarge screen on center console. 5) Maybe a start/stop option on the engine. I've experienced it on both a Chrysler van and a Chevy traverse and it seems simple enough. 6) Aluminum hood, doors, and tailgate to shave weight. 7) Tailgate strut. It's a little too heavy for my kids to handle well. All of the things I've listed are commonplace on modern cars and I hope they make it into the update. Other than that, I wouldn't change a single thing structurally or aesthetically.
it's funny that you mentioned the steering wheel. I never realized how heavy it was after owning the truck for 8 years. I never realized how heavy it was until I got a rental for about 2 weeks while traveling. When I got back into the frontier, I thought my power steering was out or something.
Still one of the best looking trucks after all these years. My Dad had a 2003 CC Long Bed and put over 250 K miles on it. Two things though. Awful turning circle and tight rear legroom in CC. If Nissan corrects these issues I'd get one for my business ASAP.
What does the “Camera” button do??? If it goes to rear-view camera automatically when you put it in reverse what is this button for? Does it allow you to turn on the rear-view camera while driving forward down the road?
Good review! I've been vying for a midsize for years now. Have an suv and a year old Elantra for commuting purposes but am looking to trade it in for something more trucky. The Tacoma caught my eye early but it sits too low and it's a rough ride. The Colorado is my other choice and not entirely sold on the Ranger yet. As simple as the Frontier is, the price is attractive (maybe not on fuel) but it has the essentials I want in a truck plus a sunroof. And it looks pretty customizable if need be 👍
*I missed the lumbar support! It has the lever on the inside part of the driver’s seat! 👍*
Thanks for watching! With the Frontier being the oldest midsize truck by far...would you still consider it over the competition?
yes absolutely I looked at all of em and bought a frontier better value and I love the motor and jumpy first gear in 5 and auto
Yes, used 2015-2017 models are an amazing deal
I’m actually fairly surprised that the interior is very similar to 05-15 Xterras. AND YES, YOU MISSING THE LUMBER SUPPORT DROVE ME NUTS!!!!!
Arbl my bad!
@@arbl1992 You can swap tons of stuff from xterras and pathfinders. I'm finding some xterra fold down front seats for my 18 frontier. As well as a pathfinder heated steering wheel and center consol + the pathfinders shifter with "manual mode"
I'm just happy that I can buy a brand new truck that still uses a key!
@OBServe Garage anyone who unironically uses soy boy as an insult is a beta trying to pass themselves off as an alpha.
Push button had a MAJOR draw back. Your key fob can be copied digitally and Someone can enter your car with your code and leave
i love the simplicity and lack of gimmicks and fancy tech. just a straight up quality truck, good frame, locking diff, and decent power, all at an affordable price.
Drove my 2008 that I bought in 2009 just shy of 560,000 miles. Never dripped a drop of oil. Ran right in and bought another specifically because it’s essentially the same now.
Jerry Mrozek 4.0 V6?
@@elonsus97474 years later still a 4.0 😊
For the money this is the best midsize truck on the road. Literally has no competition.

One thing about not changing a pickup it gives manufacturer the opportunity to work out all the little bugs adding reliability
This is the bottom line for me and why I'm considering picking one up. Outdated means reliable here I think.
That's why I bought mine 5 years ago and am still happy I did
I have my 2008 fronti from new 11yrs later no issues.
Exactly! This truck simply works. I am planning to buy a new Pro 4x BEFORE they changed model.
I'm actually really loving the simplicity here.
JM great truck but no Taco. Still looks like garbage. Nobody is paying up for a used Frontier.
JM my Tacoma will see your apocalypse and raise you an EMP.
Pretty sure both trucks will be dead after an emp. Any vehicle that doesnt use a points type ignition or similar caveman tech probably wont be running.
I just said today that the apocalypse should always be considered when buying a vehicle 😂😂
@A M - Your right, it's not all that bad, my 07, well maintained since new, manages about 18 mpg combined. Don't put that much mileage on it and so the mpg not a huge concern, and is offset IMO by the positives of dependability , solid construction and otherwise low operating costs. Zero complaints after 11 years.
my favorite truck....simple, sturdy, and affordable.
My 2014 Frontier Pro-4x is happiest in snow storms and dirt roads, it's a beast!
that's why i want one!
The Tacoma Frame is a hybrid of boxed and C Channel, Look at the crash tests between the 2 and you will see it's plenty strong.

Your the man!!
@@Shakerhood69 also look up the toyota C channel frame massive rust recall and you will see how strong it is....
Nissan all day. I use to be a Toyota guy
This truck with the engine and transmission it has is a complete winner! Can’t go wrong with this truck, great bang for your buck!
Love the simplicity of the frontier. No stupid shiny plastics covered in greasy fingerprints and dust. Just wish the turning radius was better.
I would have to totally agree!! That's the only thing I would say about mine, the turning radius ain't the best.
Because it's from 2005 where things were simple lol. It's not like they did that on purpose.
Turning radius of a 250! lol
Nissan is screwing the pooch. Old tech is not necessarily a good thing with the competition. Sure, the ranger sucks, but the colorado/canyon and tacoma are hands down better trucks.
@@austinwhite8773 Turns like a school bus. Doesn't help that the steering gets really heavy when turning.
Solid as a rock. I got this over the colarado 3yrs ago with no regrets.
That’s awesome, I’m glad to hear it! I’m sure it’ll be a great truck for many years! Thanks for watching 👍
Best truck value out there. You can get a 4x4 crew cab SV with heated seats, power everything, BT, satellite radio, rear camera, alloys, bed liner, and tow package for $27,000 brand new.
No doubt, that’s awesome!
You could talk the dealer down to that price but sticker is 33k
True that
Yes! 100% agreed. Own one ssme specs & price
@@HumpDaddy01 Sticker is 33k...no talking down.
I’m glad to hear it! Sounds like you made a good decision and I’m sure you’ll continue to enjoy it! It’s a great no fuss truck. Thanks for writing in!
I own this truck. Why am I here watching a review lol
Haha that’s great! Well thanks for stopping by! 👍
I'm doing the same lol
how has it been treating you?
I bought a 2019 and absolutely love it very first truck and I would very much recommend
I used to own a 2006 Nismo Frontier and it never left me stranded in the 6 years I had it. Very solidly built.
Just got a pro4x. No frills. Nice responsive handling and quick off the mark. Brakes could be a little stiffer but still good. Arm rest could be a little longer. Great sound system.
I just put new brakes on mine and it's much better at braking then the stock brakes pads and rotors it came with.. that's was my only dislike before it's great now
Just got my 2019 frontier and love it .the frontier rides great and drives great too.im a no thrills for trucks and this is a fun truck.
How did it hold up over the years?
Just gotta say, this was one of the most real reviews (that ultimately landed me with a 2015 Xterra Pro-4X). Thanks man!
Came here from watching the 2020 Chevy Colorado>2020 Toyota Tacoma, and now I'm here watching this 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Review. Loving these reviews! Keep up the great work!
Such a nice simple affordable truck. The last of a dying breed. If only Nissan could keep it as it is, with just minor upgrades ahead.
I like my Frontier a lot. It’s a good value,
This is why I love my 2011 Ranger, old school like me!
Just bought a 2012 w/ 200k loaded , well maintained, it feels brand new , great motor, I’m sold on Nissan!!!
I own a 2018 Tacoma, ironically this “old” truck has some features that my “newly redesigned Tacoma” does not have. Like rear backup radar and power adjustable seats.
Jacob Hicks good deal my friend!
We have a 2019, and love this truck!
Nigel Hutchinson that’s awesome, thanks for stopping by! I appreciate it!
Winning points are as followings:
1. Dana 44 rear and locker - cant beat that!
2. Beefier Transfer case (ZR-2 one is better but ZR-2 does NOT have sunroof~!) than Tacoma.
3. Yes, Sunroof...did I mention sunroof? Nicely tucked between roof rack where I can tie down Mad Max victims
This helped me a lot...I have been torn between a taco and frontier...
@@robain79 Can't go wrong with either Taco or Fronti. I chose Fronti because of its tough undercarriage and no-frill approach - and cost most of all. When it comes to usage, you can't go wrong with either. Get one with the best deal.
Thanks for this i'm going to go look at pro 4x today's
I'm definitely in the minority but i hate sunroofs and any automatic features.
That pro4x is so strong I loved driving in heavy rain in south cali , I can't go wrong with that little truck.
Honest, reliable, tough mid size with more than plenty of power. Turning radius sucks though. But love my Fronty.
For sure! Glad to hear it!
Same here 2018 pro4x and I Love it
I own a '15 sv cc I bought with 46k now at 64ish k and I love it. Crappy turn radius but mechanically reliable and thats a bigger concern for me. Talked to a few owners before I bought and they were all very happy with it. It has all the comforts I need/expect in a truck
My brother in law has a 2007 frontier loaded like that one and till this day is still looking good. It might be old, but is still a great truck !
Old equals paid off and can't complain about that.
Great reviews with your pickups. I want a V6 with a 4x4 (not AWD) and it came down to the Colorado and Frontier. Initially, I was all in the Chevy, but I changed my mine because the Frontier is SIMPLE and it works without breaking the bank.
Thank you! I would go a frontier as well and you can’t beat the simplicity!
I own a 2018 SV 4X4 long bed. I love it, solid, simple yet effective truck. Tows when needed, never been stuck either.
TomMJH that’s great to hear, hopefully it continues!
That’s awesome, thanks for the info! 👍
@@PrimeAutotainment I get 21 to 22 mpg on the highway in 2WD and the truck will hold 85 mph up the 7%, approx 8 mile grade, to Eisenhower tunnel w/o flooring it or working hard.
But it won't get 21 mpg doing that ;-)
Thanks for the review, you just sold me on this truck!
HiPlains1 thanks for the info! That’s awesome...I really liked the way it behaved. It was refreshing. Glad you spotted that!
I traded my 2013 frontier SV and upgraded to a 2017 pro 4x frontier. I only wish there was more accessories for this truck.
This guy not only give a good review he also like all the comments legend 👍
Haha thank you!
Looking into this as my first vehicle, nice review, pushing me into getting it
Thank you, it should be a great first vehicle for you!
Very nice! Glad to hear it and thanks for sharing that info...I’m looking forward to it!
Fantastic review! I own a first gen Nissan Titan king cab and am considering going back to a Frontier and this review gave me some in depth information on this truck.
Thank you very much and I’m glad to hear that!
The last real midsized truck. Oh and it doesn't have direct injection!!! Simple and plain. That's the best feature.
I’m probably getting this in 2020 so I appreciate your detailed review. Hopefully they don’t change it too much.
Awesome! There’s a redesigned Frontier on its way but not sure if it’s going to be the 2020 or 2021 model..
i LOVE my 2010 nissan frontier pro 4x. i never considered a nissan when truck shopping, until i came upon mine, and took it for a test drive. it was love at first sight and drive. i know it gets knocked for being dated, but i think of it more as a timeless design. its a handsome vehicle.
Mine has 256,000 on it. Still use it, just change the fluids it will run for ever. Good truck.
Good to hear. I'm renting one cause of a car accident and really like it. Just wasn't sure how good they last.
old, low tech. an anachronism. just like me. love it!
I love mine. I have the 4x4 with a camper shell. I bought it new for $24,000. It is the SV. I put a deer guards on, steps and the top rack! She goes everywhere. People are always complementing me on the gal.
Own a 2009, love this truck dependable good on gas good power got the 4.0 after a few add on I pumped HP up to 310 .
I've got a 2012 Pro-4X. 105K on it now and it never has gone back to the dealer for ANYTHING! Best truck I've ever owned. I know I'll get another 100K of problem free miles. Knock on wood!!!
That’s great! 👍
you did change engine/tranny oil though right?
Have had sever frontiers make it to 300,000 miles.
In my opinion it’s more dependable than the Titan. This is nice even though it’s design is 100 years old. Good thorough review Nolan!!!
Yea it should be! Thanks man, always appreciate you! 👍
I'm renting one cause of a car accident and really liking it. If they toss chump change at me for my car I'd seriously consider going the same route.
$14k coulda got you a 1999 Tacoma with 250k miles. 🤣
All the 2016 frontiers with low mileage are closer to 20k in my area.
Great find!
i bought a 2016 frontier in 2018. but i dont need the 4X. it might be a simple truck. but iam a simple guy..
Thank you! Very nice, I miss the Xterra!
They should of added a supercharged on it... best Frontier I own was the CS v6 2001 that came out with supercharge 👍👍
I have had two frontiers. A 2003 Crew cab 2wd and I currently have a 1999 4wd. Great trucks for light duty daily driving.
That’s great to hear! It was very solid and of course it’s capable. That’s interesting with the door handles...idk why either. Thanks for stopping by!
I agree. Once they update and jack up the price people will most likely opt for a Tacoma. They should leave it as is.
Does it tell you how many miles you have left untill empty?
Amen
Raymond Abella really? Tacoma’s will go 800+ miles before spark plug change. Worth every penny..this is a nice truck but the Tacoma trumps all.
800k without plugs... lol good luck bud, maybe you should drain the oil and go for a ride while you're at it lmao
I'm not even truck shopping but your review is so awesome. Why does nobody talk about all the things you do? Excellent job. Subbed.
Thank you very much, I appreciate it 😁👍
Have a 2015 Pro-4X bought new. Never had a single issue. Pull an enclosed car hauler at 6000 lbs well on level ground at 70 MPH around 2800 RPM. On steeper grades jumps up to 4000 RPM.
Next Year is my year, so giving all offroad trucks and suvs a chance to win me over.
@@Davido50 dam tested the Ranger like it a lot
@@TheLegendandjaguar Yea they are awesome. It's over engineered . That's a good thing. Tuning can get 80hp more from simple hand tuner! Livernoismotorsports.com
@@Davido50 wow didn't know that, I jumped in the Tacoma, Tundra and Titan. Funny thing is I felt pretty good in the Ranger definitely have to give it a test ride.
If wasn't for the upcoming Bronco, I would chose this as a winner. I think it's that Mustang engine that gives it that spark.
Great review! I love this truck!! It is honest and old school and reliable!!
Just purchased a twin to this truck! nice video.
That’s awesome, thanks!
@@PrimeAutotainment now I need to figure out how to change the odometer from kilometers to miles. It was a Canadian truck. :-(
I’m looking into a pro 4x that was a “Canadian fleet” vehicle.
I got a base with 4x4. With the money saved will purchase a city driving car.
One of my employees has an older model of these and he loads it up with his compressor and air keg with all his tools and nail guns, you can’t even tell is hauling
a beast off road
I love my Nissan vehicles. 2015 Titan pro 4x and a 2015 Armada platinum reserve.
I had a 2007. Good truck. Had 1 problem with the fuel sending unit....other than that. It ran good. The girl I sold it to is still driving it...nismo edition. But it needs to be updated badly...15 years is to long for a body style on any vehicle
My rangers 23 years old. Drive it 3 times a week lol
2016 Crew Cab 4X4 owner here: My list of requested updates:
1) 7 speed transmission for higher final drive ratio when cruising on the interstate.
2016 standard shift pro4x with 20k. I love it. The only complaint I have is the small gas tank. I'm averaging 16+ MPG.
valley I.get 18 usually, lot of highway mine is 5 speed auto. 310 0n a 17 gallon tank if I run it to E. I never do
it's funny that you mentioned the steering wheel.
Phil Pine This one is much larger than your dads 2003 version. You should check it out
What does the “Camera” button do???
And it looks pretty customizable if need be 👍
good video man! Straight to the point.
Love these trucks. You can get such a good deal on these and they are all truck and no excitement.
It looks smaller than the other mid sizers out there too, which is a good thing.
