I remember back in 1981 watching MTV as teenager after midnight and "I got you" came on. I had never heard of the Split Enz before, but it was different, a very well done video, and the musical chemistry of the band was excellent. I have been a fan ever since.
I swear my story is the same as yours. It was the first video I saw on MTV and I was hooked - my whole world changed that day. Saw their 1982 Time and Tide tour. It was awesome!!
I was at an Enz with a Bang Concert at the Morley Generator in Perth, it must have been about 1983, great show obviously, what was more memorable was what happened after the show, you had to be there.
SPLiT ENZ !!! what a GREAT KiWi band they were, they made Odd Ball quirkyness so damn COOL !! 👍👍🙂👍👍 I was 14yr old high school student when I remember seeing them for the first time on NZ TV talent show in 1971 or 72.. one "so called" talent judge( Phil Warren?) didn't rate them very well saying they won't get anywhere being a band of circus clowns( becos of the wierd costumes they wore) HAH.. how Wrong he was !!! SPLiT ENZ morphed into CROWDED HOUSE and as the saying goes: The rest is history!
Kathy Brown I saw them about a dozen times including the Farewell tour at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, saw a Tim perform his Escapade album. Saw Crowded House, Finn Brothers tour. Started as a Frenz in 1979. Still have all their Christmas singles, badges etc that Peter Green probably organised for club members.
1st time I saw them 1974 ? was before they adopted the costumes.Next time I saw them 1975 ? on national tour they had progressed to costumes and it blew us away.
Thoroughly enjoying this! Thanks Peter! And I'm very glad to find you again after many years of loving your work. Was a member of your 'friends of the enz' club back in the 80s and met you at an Enz merch stand many years later at a reunion show in Brisbane. You were very kind and answered my fanboy questions with patience and good humor.
Just found this! Great stuff. Whangarei Kensington Stadium was my first ever concert at 14yo. What a bloody thrill that was, several thousand smelly kids squeezed into an oversized basketball court bouncing around to these blokes. ('Stadium' is a slight exaggeration....).
glad that I subscribed to this channel thanks to Mr. Peter Green for the upload living in Scotland didn't discover Split Enz until after they split when a friend of mine knew I liked Crowded House gave me a few of his Split Enz albums and that was me hooked found some great stuff on youtube so those of you that have Split Enz stuff keep uploading were all #friendsoftheenzhere
brilliant ive got the one out of the bag dvd a superb live show sound on it is so good and Split Enz are playing great but one of my fave songs Give It A Whirl isn't on it but you uploaded that as well so thanks I could listen to Neil Finn all day not just singing just so interesting to hear him speak
This brings back some amazing memories. Peter, I wrote to you almost 40 years ago wanting to become a Frenz of the Enz. I'm not sure if you will see this but I understand you managed the fan group for the best part of 40 years. Dude you're a bloody legend.
I got my first job at A&M Records thanks to Noel and the Finns. Great people, great artists, great band. I missed this farewell tour by a whisker - and a few thousand air miles...so great to see it finally! Thanks for posting Peter.
Thank you so much Peter. You will never how much I appreciate what you have documented. They have always been my favorite band, they inspired me to write and record music, even if it's awkward and different 🙂
Um, Tim, You and the boys ARE LEGEND! I’ve always loved your hits since I first heard/seen ‘I Got You’ on Satellite Music Videos, the precursor to MTV. However, I’ve been diving deep into everything Split Enz. You guys went from maybe 20-30 on my favorite list during the last 40 years, but you all have moved up to top five with Rush, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Oingo Boingo, pushing INXS (unbelievably) to 6th. That’s beating the likes of ELO, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Peter Gabriel/Genesis, AC/DC, The Cars, Simple Minds, aHa, ZZ Top, Billy Idol, Queen….get the picture?
Love the suits! Latecomer to the Enz - partly age, partly accessibility. The net has enabled us to discover so much in hindsight, and much as I love Crowded House, i find Tim's voice better than Neil's a lot of the time. And once you strip away the more gimmicky early image, the actual musicianship is awe-inspiring. Some of Tim's songs are very raw emotionally in comparison to Neil's but that would be due to age and life experience as much as anything else.
Paul Hester wasn't just a great drummer, I think he gave Crowded House it's personality, too. A lot of charisma. Maybe he should have taken comfort - which is difficult on your depressively bad days- to what the lyrics to Enz's Dirty Creature was about. But there's a lot of coulda/woulda/shoulda's in life, especially for we bi-polar strugglers at the best of times. I completely empathised with him when he made his final, fatal decision in his short life. :(
@@nickdryad I don't agree. I think it had a great sense of wanting to recapture the magic, and there is still plenty of magic between Neil and Nick (the others, while excellent musicians, are later additions), but it is a more sober magic. The three together were really something special that cannot be recaptured though.
You must be an Australian trying too make out a drummer from Australia that joined a band after the fact with the great NZ Finn brothers in it was anything but a drummer who joined an existing band. Look he was a great guy but dont over sell his influence this was all Finn.
@@nickdryad Like re-forming INXS after the death of Michael Hutchence. A really bad choice of replacements, too - except for Terence Trent D'arby when they played New Years Eve '99. What a farce.
hellovanite Neil Finn and Paul were in Split Enz together before Crowded House, they added Nick Seymour later (after Split Enz collapsed) and they had Craig Hooper for a few weeks while they were the Mullanes. Finn was obviously ambivalent about the nature of the band but Hester and Finn were tight and I believe it was always going to be about Hester and Finn, at least in 85’ and 86. There’s a telling story, that can be found in Something So Strong, the biographical account, where Finn says to Nick and Hester while they were in LA, that he wasn’t even sure they were a band at that point. They even had Jim Keltner on drums because Hester couldn’t get the shuffle-feel on Now We’re Getting Somewhere and Froom hired other session men, like Tim Pearce. It’s highly debatable and in my view, also improbable that Neil Finn would have made it on his own. Having followed The Enz, CH and The Finn brothers since 1979 it’s pretty tough to Imagine Neil as a solo act until after Crowded House. Not impossible but difficult. Hester was great on See Ya Round. Hester was so funny in live shows. Nationality had nothing to do with it.
Yes it is. There is also footage of him interviewing Neil for Shazam online. i think he is British but made a name in NZ before coming back to do kids tv?
Weird how a band could get progressively worse yet more successful the longer it went on. For me, the ‘main stream years’ post 1979 weren’t at all good.
I see someone doesn't recognise the Hester brand of humour. I bet he really put the wind up a lot of people back in school too, with so many people thinking he was being serious. You need to watch more footage with him talking, and you will get it.
@@greggregson9687 I thought it was pretty obvious it was tongue in cheek! Especially with the previous comments from others about sitting back waiting for reunions and watching from out front. Sadly not all humour translates internationally. Despite our common language, Brits, Americans and Antipodeans have very different humour styles.
Not that serious. He said he was doing a project with Neil (C House) so that was probably where his interest and heart was, it would be something to look forward to. Not the same as tagging onto an existing band.

Split Enz were like New Zealand’s answer to the Beatles. Just magnificent.
God I love Tims voice. One of the best males singer of all time, along with Sam Cooke, Art Garfunkel and Marvin Gaye.
I totally agree. Such a unique, beautiful voice.
Otis Redding Al Green Jimi Hendrix [ I agree with Jools Holland] Jim Morrison Luther Vandross James Brown

this band was the single most influential band in my life

I've been a huge fan ever since i saw the Sight and Sound concert in 1977, they were and still are unique . The soundtrack to a huge part of my life.
No bands come close to the genuine quality these guys exude.
I agree that Split Enz are the top New Zealand band of all time.
Huh?
Beatles, Floyd, Led Zeppelin..
So great to see Hessie singing 'Massive'... thanks for posting this great show

Eddie Rayner was the man!
I thought the Spellbound doc was great (and it is!), but this gem is priceless. Good stuff, gang.
yes a fun look back. Good times.

I thought Neil caught up somewhat later. I adore his stuff, too. And his voice.
Philip Schofield of Shazam TV show NZ. He ran back to UK eventually and became a big performer himself.
I remember their last concert here in Australia. Cried my heart out at the end.
Festival Hall. I remember it like it was 1984. : )
So much fun. Ended up on stage with a few others during the encore. Amazing band, amazing night.
a fun tour for all of us ... Festival Hall shows were mighty.
'Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water'. Such a great tour.
awesome tour.
No cellphones ....maybe one glo-stick!
This has to be the most amicable split up ever.
thank you, peter! wonderful.... absolutely epic :D
glad you enjoyed it Carie.

I love this song!!!!
Damn good band@
Epic Noel'Fro!
where can I get I walk away as a download?
Peter, is that toddler Liam Finn?
It is, he would always escape from us at side stage and head straight for the drum kit. Musician dna.
Nini Kneez Up was excellent!! 23:24
Please...what's the title song at 14:00? Thanks!
"Years Go By"
I walk away
is that Philip Schofield interviewing the band? I know he originated from NZ
Hmm think so, sorry so long ago my memory a bit rusty.
Yes it is. There is also footage of him interviewing Neil for Shazam online. i think he is British but made a name in NZ before coming back to do kids tv?
It is Philip Schofield. He is English but worked in kid's tv in New Zealand in the 80s before returning to Britain.
I couldn't stand his presenting style, so irritating for some reason.
In similar style oingo boingo was so much better live band
