Apologies for the occasional speaker feedback noise but this was on the original recording.
SPLIT ENZ - Live in Melbourne, Australia 07.01.1980
Double Happy * I Wouldn't Dream of it * Hermit McDermitt * I Got You * How Can I Resist Her
Charlie * Poor Boy * What's The Matter With You * Outer Mongolia * Shark Attack * I Hope I Never * Give It a Whirl * Nobody Takes Me Seriously * I See Red * My Mistake * Mind Over Matter
I'm genuinely surprised this doesn't have more views, but then I'm genuinely surprised Split Enz never got more popular. The bass player is a magician.
Solid proof, with or without the colourful makeup and stage clownery, The Enz were an amazing hugely talented Kiwi musical force. Still waiting for their 50-year reunion....Noel get out yer spoons!
A f**king fantastic band ... and a guy that plays the spoons!! What more do you want??
I think they should. And get over to the UK too!! Been far too long since I saw them live.
Word. Could not have said it better myself 🔥♾️
Yes, the world needs Split Enz now more than ever. Please come to America!
These guys need to do a post-COVID reunion tour to get fans back into the arenas.
Prog colliding with punk, pop and new wave. A truly fantastic ensemble.
I hope I never ….words cannot describe how fucking awesome that song is …
Tim vocal on I hope I never, Wow. Great song. Talent from down under..Great Band
That song is a MASTERPIECE.
Listening to it now just magnificent
Eddie Rayner keyboards make up the layers along with the other instruments in a unique way giving us an experience we had never had, they were an awesome live band
Thank you for sharing this gem. Gosh, they were just kids and the talent was already bursting. A range of songs from melodic pop, a beautiful ballad to frenzied, manic 80's joy. Such great music, lyrics & natural showmanship, (esp.Tim). And damn, they're all so hot,(still are 🔥!).When vinyl "left' us, I was moving from NY to LA. I had over 500 LP", & only took one box of 50 with me. Two S. Endz are in there & will be spun, (loudly), this weekend. Thank you to the Finn Brothers for 45 years of magic. AND You are & still going strong. 💜
I LOVE all iterations of NZ, but this lineup of Tim, Neil, Noel, Eddie, Nigel and Mal are The Living Enz!
Jonathon & Emlyn were a better rhythm section (and the sound of the instruments, they had)
OMG Tim’s voice at the end of Charlie is phenomenal.
Tim Finn's voice is so good. He's like a modern ( at the time ) Elvis.. Man were these guys underrated
Not so good now, but probably just lack of use. He should do more vocal training to set it up a while before he performs.
Total #Legend 🔥♾️
@@1970brenzI just went to his concert x 2 and he was brilliant
The 80s clothes, electro sound, vocals are fabulousss!
Glad you liked it Ruth
and barely a week into the 80's
Love this band my whole life. Severely underrated geniuses. Thanks so much for this vid.
Tim is definitely the star of the band at this time 1980 but you can see Neil starting to make ground with his songs in this set. I’m amazed what a tight sounding band split enz were at this point ! In the middle of pub rock in 1980 and competing with chisel and midnight oil they more than hold their own ! It’s hard to generate much of an atmosphere in a sterile TV studio with a handful of dedicated fans in the audience. And as Tim points out no booze ! Lol
Tim has the better voice I think anyone can tell. Also has more style.
Split Enz was Tim’s band - Crowded House Neil’s. They each invited the other in and both were better for it IMHO. But I’ve always loved Tim’s songs, Charlie might be my favourite song (period as the yanks say).
@@smidonadore Charlie
Love everything this band does they were truly ahead of their time.unique and diverse New Zealand has a lot of great bands that became successful in Australia.
Absolutely awesome - one of my all time favourite bands, and I believe one of the best bands of all time - especially looking at their whole trajectory from the start.
Agree 💯%!!!
This was sold officially at the time, as the very first pre-recorded music video released in Australia (and presumably NZ). On "Mushroom Video LP". I remember this because I bought it at the time - just under $70 in 1980 money!
Wonderfully talented bunch of fellas
I always say Split Enz was even better live than on their studio albums, which I don’t say about any other band.
Heya Bryce, you can add to your live band list the unheralded - Shihad. Play Loud. 🤘
Tim Finn was a great front man ! Dynamic !
An amazing band. ❤
cant turn off...brilliant...from my 13 year old self in 1980
Who knew then they’d go on to almost singlehandedly write the soundtrack to our entire teens and 20s? ❤️
1980 was the year I ‘discovered’ them, and I was 14. Perfect age at the perfect time. The turn of the decade from the 70’s to the 80’s was such a great time to be a teenager, getting turned on to all the amazing new sounds and scenes that were exploding all around me. My home life was a nightmare at the time, but all the great music and live gigs got me through it. Incredible time, and Split Enz were a huge part of it.
@@Shikta-poobah67 it was amazing, my mate had Back in Black as well, I had The Wall, and another had this album, we would get together and sing all the songs together,
I can relate to that absolutely. My school work unfortunately went south but they made me so happy. Years later I reconnected with old school friends on FB and I was reminded as Frenz of the Enz. Myself and my two best friends were the only fans at a Cold Chisel school. Lets just say we stood out.
* remembered
Tim has the better voice of the brothers , but together they
are better than each .
SO TRUE 🚶♂️🚶♂️🎶
Tim's vox IS Split Enz
yes , very much .@@BloggStandard
I only discovered the ENZ the year following this concert (1981) thanks to MTV that started broadcasting in the U.S. via cable service in August 1981. I would have given anything to see this concert in those days. What a gem!
I learned of Split Enz in the fall of 1980 (in the U.S.), only it was through one of the local college radio stations in my hometown. It was “I Got You”, and I was immediately hooked. A year later MTV came on the air and I saw several of their videos, which were all great. Definitely one of my favorite new wave bands of that era.
They were so brilliant live. Neil would even play the spoons, truly talented.
Tape flickered at most discordant jazz part of I See Red. Perfect!!!!
This is so great. One of my favorite bands and I wore this cassette ( remember those) out in 1980-81. Killer band. Should have been as big as Genesis.
Bigger! Genesis had a rather limited sound.
Who knows what tomorrow may bring though? 🔥♾️ #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy3
Split Enz were *WAAAAY* better than Genesis! Like, no comparison. Not even in the same league.
Brilliant band. Brilliant.
Tim on How could I resist her
Brilliant band of total global level musically equal to any other. Can't believe only 404 likes come on where are all the Split Enz fans for Christ's sake?
A great live performance with one great song after another
Tim finn...... 😍
Malcolm Green excellent as always on drums
A fantastic meld of prog and new wave.
CLASSIC BAND SPLIT ENZ GREAT LIVE PERFORMANCE THEIR EXTRAORDINARY BOTH TIM AND NEIL FINN R GENIUS SO CREATIVE A FANTASTIC MUSICIANS THEN AND STILL NOW WITH CROWDED HOUSE REMARKABLE.
I saw them a couple of times at the Hammersmith Odeon in London a couple of times, fantastic band.
I saw them on this tour, and the next. Fantastic band! Part of “Mongolia” became part of “Fire Drill.”
Yes "Fire Drill" is on the Rear Enz CD. Rather too good to keep in the can.
I think they should have included it as a Bonus Track on the Remastered "Time & Tide".
Tim Finn Neil Finn geniuses even crowded house love them schnell fenster.fush and chips anyone.
Superb upload from a stunningly original band.
I will never forget receiving the brilliant True Colours album for Xmas of 1981 and seeing those prism shapes on the album. That album was glued to our turntable for a year.
Reunion?? Please??!!
Reunion was in 2006. The Finn Brothers were found together on the 3rd or 4th Crowded House album, on some things they did together, and bot have released alot of their own stuff.
Oh, and Neil Finn...git invited, successfully to replace Lindsey Buckgham in Fleetwood Mac! Mick especially contacted him personally, and lured him to join on their live tour. He did Fabulously well :)
I was at the very last gig they did before the release of the album. The band was always respected but never thought of being something huge. On the Monday True colors was released and the rest as they say was history lol
Saw them in 1977 came onstage to a background of London in the blitz - searchlights, sirens, strobe lights and Olympic style air summersaults. Performed all the tracks off dizrythmia. Sheer artistic brilliance all in surreally fitting suits and full punky clown makeup!
rewatching How Can I resist her, turn it up
Thank you for this, so hoping for a future Blu-Ray or DVD release of this show. Love the Enz and the Finn Brothers.
Awesome Show. Wish I had a Time Machine. Thanks for sharing👍
moved to tears, this is so good, thank you
Very entertaining .. ❤ this❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
They definitely did some great songs. Would love if they did some new songs. They together are so many talented folks, be interesting to see how they have musically grown through the years.
Neil looks about 18! I didn't realise how young he was.
The music is either so relaxing or fun dance numbers. Thanks SE in every configuration you're unique!! 🤩
I had the purple version of the album cover and the vinyl was laser cut with prism designs🤩
Dragon another brilliant band.
Exceptional old-school footage. Hilarious less than one thousand views. Cheers 4 this.
Most welcome
I’ve been listening to Enz at the Paradise in Boston Oct. ‘80. I was there so the great taped audio is such an unbelievable memory. This show is firmly in my top 5. They play mostly new inc a few from as yet unreleased Waiata. FYI it’s available on Wolfgang’s Vault.
Thank you for mentioning the source. Just finished listening to the Boston audio. What an absolute gem of a recording! I’m discovering the Enz for the first time (forgive me, I’m young-ish) and spending many sleepless nights sifting through the archives - and striking gold everywhere, it seems. Thanks again
Aagh the good old days
The Enz are The Beatles of the South Pacific!
This is great, shows the last vestiges of the Enz stage makeup before they went full casual.
Saw them at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA for the True Colors tour back in the day. Bringing my kids to Crowded House tour this spring. Hope they play us of these greats!
so good 💯💕
I HAVE ON REPLAY 🎶
Thanks so much for posting this! I've always loved the sound and the quality of Split Enz from the True Colours --> Time and Tide era.
The Kiwi Beatles
Chris this is wonderful. Thank you so much for uploading. Singing along, taking me right back to my early teens😘
So glad you enjoyed......sorry this is my other account lol
For a VHS recording, the sound is really good. Thank you for posting
Wonderful
IT WAS A GREAT GIG, THX GUYS🚶♂️🎸💙🎶
I so loved this trip down memory lane. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this..
Tim is a touch hyped by the end. haha
Great vid with Mal on the cans.
just a heads up for you art rockers out there - if you go to 1.03.36 the tape bends in the middle of Eddie's frantic as hell keys solo in "I See Red" giving it some new level mind twist. Its beautiful.
15:17 I Got You
God gives
Hey Chris, great vid. Was the prominent earth-loop audio buzz on the vhs tape?
Yes it was sadly
WTF are there seriously only 20 people there???
All i can say is just "Really Good" Band
Where on earth did you get this in such great quality?
Took ages to upload LOL
Can see why Neil got the gig with Fleetwood Mac
I thought Mac got the gig in Neil?
Turn your knobs up
Jeez, were there like 75 people in the room?
Hey Chris, was this at Festival Hall?
Was this January 1980 or July 1980 (I read 07.01.1980 as 7th January. Is that right?)
January 1980. It was stated somewhere in the video that it would be released at the end of the month (True Colours came out late January 1980)
Yes January is correct...not the way round they have it in the states
30:42 what prompted him to say this
No spoons?
With Malcolm Green. An enigmatic drummer. Coulda' been refined but didn't. Still, great tub thumper.
basic
You're missing something. The complex changes in the songs are difficult to negotiate. Nevertheless, this isn't prog rog. It's art Rock. It's not about having a Bruford or a Collins playing complex time signatures. It's something in between. Songs like I Got You are pop songs but Tim's songs are more complex. Mal was perfect for the job. When Noel took over, the drumming was excellent but still essentially basic rudiments. Mal's drumming is Like Ringo's: not technical but tight and very musical.
Not really missing anything. In fact Noel's sound was better than Mal's. After Geoff Emerick ruined Enz sound, too much reverb and sloppy mix, the drums being so alwful, especially the snare. Unlike Phil Manzanera, who knew what he was doing. "It's somewhere in between" is true though: Art Rock. Phill Judd being the most complex off them all. @@woohoolabtheory
I think they borrowed a lot from genesis and then in turn genesis and Peter Gabriel them
Nightmoves wasnt quite as good as In concert or Midnight special but it had something
If it wasn't for Neil Finn, Split Enz would have been just a footnote in musical history. What always makes me wonder, is how he managed to put up with all that progressive shite from Phil and his brother for as long as he had to, before they finally realised that pop music is (and has always been) about appealing to POPULAR values, not ''arty farty'' bullshit.
Neil only fully joined after Phil was told to leave by Tim.
well, because you don't get something doesn't mean it's shite. Those early albums are for musicians. Ahead of their time still.
Eddie Rayner was a huge fan of Yes and Genesis.
He idolised Phil, this band is 2.0 and hits were needed... fair play, but the depth was NEVER the same
Eddie brought it - massive talent @@deanbaird
