Hello Michael, I think because of the history behind the Diddley Bow with a slide and the one string, these 3 string CBG's have come a long way, because their, Nice looking, Easier to play and as you say, can play a variety of bar chords up and down the neck with one finger and get a nice riff, bit easier and enjoyable for beginners, also easily portable/carried, and last but not least, your Brilliant videos and Lessons, which without, we would not know anything about CBG's, You have the best channel on youtube and your Home-Made CBG's, I know because I've got one, A Black Lightening with matching Stomp Box, which are both Outstanding, Thank you Michael and God Bless you all, PS. If RON WOOD of the Rolling Stones has got one, That's a cracking reason to buy one from you.
Have you ever watched a cow run? The backend doesn't know what the front end is doing. Yet, somehow the cow makes it back to the barn. That's me playing the guitar. Right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Yet, every once in a while I get a tune out. Thanks for your lessons. They show use how to get it all together.
Truer words are never spoken. For me, with my short stubby fingers and poorly healed broken thumb, the narrow neck of a 3 string cbg makes the notes on the fret board easily accessible. That alone opened up a whole new world to me. Great channel Michael. I appreciate your content and your honesty. I've learned a lot from you and refer to your videos over and over again. Your new postings make my morning coffee that much better.
Hi Greg. Its a song I wrote called "Tin Roof" You can hear it in this video ruclips.net/video/w1QlacBaAwI/видео.html Also you can download it from my website www.southernfireguitars.com/
Nice. I love these little lessons. They really help me. But one of my biggest problems while trying to learn is no matter what I'm playing I always end up going to the first thing that learned, which wasn't much. SO WITH THAT BEING SAID, I'm not trying to put work on anyone, can you do some RUclips shorts on some generic turnarounds so I don't get stuck in my loop LOL
Good video Michael. I understand why you dumbed it down, although with only 3 strings and the tuning you are using, a little bit of theory (by way of explanation of what you are doing), probably wouldn't get too hard. Regards.
Thanks, I agree, you should have one. lol Most pickups are installed in the box, and some are surface mounted on the top of the box. My website will have the specs on each one :) www.southernfireguitars.com/
Everything you said, plus: they're fun. I'll add, there is something that appeals to people on a primal level, because CBGs are DELIBERATELY imperfect. There is something unsettling about something too perfect including musical instruments . In computer terms its called "uncanny valley". The little imperfections make the CBG....human. Not something created for angels or robots. They also piss off guitar snobs, so there's that LOL
Can your open G (GDGB) tuned 4 string guitars be tuned to to DGBE instead? I bought a cigar box guitar from another vendor, and a string snapped almost immediately when I tried to tune it. Hoping yours can be adjusted!
Hi nheimi, Yes, my 4 string guitar can be tuned to DGBE. Also make sure your tuner is set to Chromatic, that's for open tuning. If your tuner is set to 6 string standard tuning, you will break strings tying to get it in tune. M~
Hi SouthernDonkey. Of course I would recommend one of mine. I set the action so it comfortable with finger style playing, but not too close that your clanking your slide on the frets. 😀
The odd thing is, I actually began learning music theory because of the 3 sting cbg. I was not even trying and had played a 6 sting for decades Also Michael, have you ever seen a cow ride a bicycle?
Music Theory, very important to learn how music works and to understand it. The more you, the MORE you know. I totally agree. For a beginner I may be a bit confusing. NO, I never seen a cow ride a bike :)
Ease to learn, the fun it retains gives a person/ people. An the snooty folks that played guitars that wanted to be treated special, would make it harder to learn. I love working with wood, an loved making music ..good or bad. Lol.. they are simple, fun, an let's folks be that lead guitar player they liked growing up. With a little effort you can play, it's the love of music. Simple. An play slide slide is just F#_@& ing cool. My pups like it. Lol
A finely built CBG is part art and part science. You're not paying for the guitar, you are paying for the skill and knowledge the builder acquired building many, many guitar's.

@@gregmarquis1886 A little tip, their like those potato chips, you can't build JUST one. lol

What kind of fretted CBG would you recommend that is also good for slide play? What kind of action
Hi SouthernDonkey. Of course I would recommend one of mine. I set the action so it comfortable with finger style playing, but not too close that your clanking your slide on the frets. 😀
I cant do that unfortunately because I dont have any frets on my instruments.
Fret less CBG's are fun to play, but it does limit, what you can play. You can do both with a guitar with frets. M~
👍👍👍

Why are they so much?
A lot of skill goes into the building, along with quality woods and hardware. There not much compared to some. M~
