SEPTA AEM-7's and ALP-44 get fired up in Trenton, NJ 5/15/2019 Warning: Terrible Quality

  • WARNING: My phone decided tonight that it would be bad with audio.
    SEPTA 2303, 2304, 2305, 2308, 2306, 2301 and 2307 get brought back into SEPTA's possession.
    The crew tried to start up all seven of them but had to eventually accept that 2306 and 2301 were not going to start up.
    One thing I never realized was that the light on the top of the cab was a strobe light. Just about every engine had at least one go off when I was here. Within this, you can also hear 2308's startup and a few others as well. Pity the audio quality wasn't good.
    Although after my audio decided to act rationally again, SEPTA Engineer Jackie blew the horn on the way out.

      Andrew Lieb NJT's ALP-44s are just stored, but in derelict condition. 2308 will be the best survivor of the class.

      Andrew Lieb Yup. Unfortunately the vandalism and damage they have sustained may caused them to be beyond repair at this point.

      SEPTA unfortunately doesn't believe in preservation.

      Well we need to convince them. It’s the last surviving ALP-44 in existence not counting the deteriorating and rotting NJT ones.

      The original market St. El cars were first scrapped at 69th St, THEN the press release was issued.
      SEPTA's Management continues to viscerally despise railfans to this day.

    If these units run off of thr overhead wires, then where do they get the power to raise the pantograph?

      I'm sure there's a plethora of different springs, batteries, capacitors, etc... that are capable of making that happen.

      Usually, the batteries provide enough power to drive an auxiliary air compressor which will charge the pantograph & main circuit breaker air supply to 100psi which is enough to raise the pantograph and close the main circuit breaker. In a case like this, where the locomotives were sitting for an extended period of time, if the battery power is not sufficient, theres an auxiliary air supply that can be charged by other locomotives in the consist (In this case, that NJT ALP-46 that towed them to Trenton). In the engine room, theres a cock that will allow the main reservoir (primary air supply, charged by other locomotives) to charge the auxiliary air apply. This air supply is enough to raise the pantograph and close the main circuit breaker, which will get power flowing. So, theres a few ways the AEM-7s and ALP-44s can be given enough power without the pantograph.

      They went back to Frazer. What SEPTA will do with them after is honestly not of my knowledge

      @@pashon4percushon NJT was starting to fall behind too close to the deadline for PTC so they borrowed engines from SEPTA so they could boost the numbers for PTC equipped engines.
