When to Start Training your New Snake

Welcome to Training Tuesday for November 14, 2023.
When should I offer my new snake their first meal? In general, right away to let them know food resources are available in their new home (whether they eat it or not doesn’t matter).
When should I start target training my new snake? With their first meal! If they’re eating, if you’re offering food, they should be training because the first session and then the next few you’re just pairing the target with food to build the association. At first the target should predict food and later you modify the training so the snake learns the target signals an opportunity to earn food contingent upon performing a behavior.
Always keep an eye on body language and stop the interaction if there are signs of fear, anxiety or distress lasting more than a second or two from your snake.
