Macklot’s Python Update: Shran
Welcome to this update about our Macklot's Python (Liasis mackloti), Shran. Today is October 20, 2024 and Shran has been with us now for over a year. He arrived on July 12, 2023 and I feel that I have now had time to evaluate him to a point where I can answer some of the questions about what I think of this species., of course based on just one animal. I love him! He is active, intelligent, easy to manage and handle, and has been a joy to develop a relationship with over the past year. Shran burrows part of the time but also spends a lot of time climbing and is so active he really needed a much larger enclosure than the 4x2x2 he started out in. I just moved him into a 4x2x4 which will dou...

    I have two royals. One is named Mesmer, believe it or not - named after Franz Mesmer. What a funny coincidence. Mesmer was my first snake simply because a year and a half ago, when I got him, someone else was giving him up after an impulse buy cuz she learned she couldnt care for him. I did a bunch of research (and I mean two weeks of watching your channel, reptifiles, fb pages, reddit...)! Kept him in a 50 gal tub until he grew out of it then got him a 120 gal. He's phenomenal. I'm a night owl too so thankfully I get to observe his behavior and while you're right, he's quite shy, he loves cryptic basking and he gets most active just after an enclosure clean or rearrangement. My other little guy I got a few days ago and is still acclimating to Mesmer's old tub. It's got a modified side with hinges and stuff so it's front-opening, with a big hole cut and chicken wire used so I could set up overhead lighting. I don't know much about little Odysseus' personality yet because I got him from a breeder who didn't work much one on one and couldn't give me any info. But he was surprisingly calm and confident during his transition from bag to terrarium, so seems like a good sign. I guess I'd probably agree they don't make good pets for most people, but I've never had much of a problem giving critters the space they need, restraining myself, and respecting them. If I wanted an extremely interactable pet, I'd get another dog, or a cat! I've yet to target train either but it's in the internary. Mesmer is three years old, he's not too old for it right? Maybe one day I'll get a bredli and have a blast with a "friendlier" snake. But that's when I have some more money and space.

    Do the snakes bite you when you let them out for locking them up? Do they get angry? or do you have snakes that don't bite or what is their character, if I get a snake.

    • @LoriTorrini

      Animals bite for two reasons: to acquire food and to create distance. Any animal can bite but won’t if they have no reason to. It sounds like from your questions you are new to snakes and their behavior. My whole channel is about behavior and I would start by going through the playlists to see where you want to start learning. There is also a playlist about choosing a snake.

    • @LoriTorrini
      @LoriTorrini 24 дня назад

      Snakes bite for two reasons: to acquire food and to create distance. So to not get bitten, make sure your snake does not mistake you for food and make sure you are not something they find aversive, threatening, or that causes them fear, anxiety, or distress. Thank you lori for your content and sharing your expertise. I have previously used more intrusive methods to handle my snake but don't have an onscreen relationship with him similarly to you and bob from green room pythons and it upsets me. I'm going to try to use your animal plan to fix this. I have a few questions regarding this video and part 1 that if you had time to answer would be greatly appreciated. 1) How does this fit in with enclosure husbandry? I have a bioactive enclosure and have to refill water (obviously) and spot clean urids as well as fix plants. I currently do this whilst my snake is in it's hide and am very aware of his presence as he will be coiled defensively in one of his hides and is known to investigate slightly beyond. This means I'm never comfortable doing these tasks and unfortunately will refrain from doing these depending on his position. 2) How does this fit in with feeding? Do you do the proximity method a few days after feeding? I know my snake will move to the cold hide after a few days so i assume that would be a good indicator that he is now able to be interacted with. 3) (Not really a question) My snake use to associate the sound of it's old encosure sliding open with feeding, now he's in a exoterra hinged enclosure and I'm showing a target before presenting the rat to start target training. I hope these thing help break the association that has been built 4) Does the snake have to be active to start training? my ball python is very active and exsplority and is very enriched at night climbing or crushing some plants and laying across the support on the wall (Desinged for him to rest on) as he has always wanted to have a vertical aspect to exploring, He'll pause in my presence but will then continue unphased by me. But in the day is normally balled in a hide. He responds by protruding his head and tongue flicking if i go buy his enclosure but isn't actively out. I hope this makes sense, thanks again for your help.

      Sorry to ask again Lori as I know you're busy but your help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @LoriTorrini
      @LoriTorrini 18 дней назад

      You can do spot cleaning and some enclosure maintenance while the snake is in his hide, since he sounds like he is scared while in his hide with you cleaning, I would cover the entrance to make if feel safer and so that he doesn’t suddenly come out and surprise you, a non-planned interaction at this point could go badly and set you back. If you have to do extensive maintenance, lift the entire hide out with your snake in it and put him someplace safe and contained, like a bin or exercise tent and then just move him back when finished. I have videos about this. Feeding doesn’t change anything. The snake will let you know if they want to engage or not and if you are still at the stage where you are doing gradual desensitization to your presence and proximity, the snake having eaten won’t impact what you are doing. Nothing about how I interact with my snakes changes just because they eat. Eating, drinking, thermoregulating, and eliminating are just natural things the snakes do. Yes, I recommend to teach the snake a signal that means they will be fed, a signal that means they will be handled and cannot opt out, a signal that the door will be opened, etc. Predictability maintains low-stress interactions; surprises are stressful. Yes, training and any facilitated interactions should take place when the snake is naturally awake and active. Royal Pythons are typically active during the night, so I accommodate their schedule. They are usually asleep or resting during the day, not always, but nighttime is usually when they are most alert and ready to train.

    Hi Lori, thanks for sharing this on RUclips. I was interested to hear that savuensis are fossorial by daytime (makes sense with their small fine scalation?). One keeper relayed that they were advised that one way to stimulate breeding was to switch adults onto wood shavings ( from coconut husk) to make conditions very dry and simulate the dry season? Unsure that I will adopt that approach in future, but I certainly will increase substrate depth. I have noted one of three juveniles burrowing in the substrate but will increase the depth from 1 inch to 3+.
