great video he looks just like my new baby king
You lucky duck, Savu's are so friggin cool! As always love the videos! Got a Bredl's and an everglades ratsnake both on target training!
She's doing so great!!
Thanks Lori!
Has Vashti calmed down at all?? haha. She's like shifting a tiger, but the tiger is thrashing about the whole time. OMG, she always makes me jump.
@@nataliaprado5 No and yes. She is calmer in winter 🥶
So refreshing to see someone talking about other things besides building the largest enclosure that engulfs your home
One thing that seems tough is reinforcing a snake like an adult boa, who only eats like once a month. I guess it's that much more important to train while they are young, but how would you reward a snake even when it's not feeding time?
I have adult boas here and they learn very well with the training sessions spaced out with their meals; however, as I mentioned in the webinar, the snake often finds the experience itself or stimuli they engage with during the activity as reinforcing. Once the routine and/or opportunity to shift out is established as reinforcing you can use food to intermittently reinforce the behavior and use freedom, enrichment activities, or other things you have found are reinforcing for your snake to reinforce the behavior.
@LoriTorrini thanks for your help
Teach your snake to s**t

Excellent content, thank you.
This clarified some questions I had but didn't know how to ask. This video really helped me understand how shift training really works. I think I know where to go next with my snake. Thank you.
Lori would love a video on your thoughts around ball python hunger strikes, whether they're inevitable, what might cause them etc
@@nancydrew-qu7ox I did a video about Python regius strike performance based on a recent published research study. You can find the video and a link to the paper here ruclips.net/video/79q0ArUSB7Y/видео.htmlsi=N65ZwXIx862kOxi4

What is the best like beginner snake ? Im thinking like a small green one. I don't know much about snake thats why your channel is my fav now beacuse it helps me alot thnx Love Safi super excited. 😮
If you are considering adding a snake to your family I recommend, first watching the videos in this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLNbZzsRecQ2bV0jlXTrAHQWj6kaLMiONI&si=pO1_WRnYxG9HBs0R There is no one "best pet snake" or "best first snake" or a "beginner snake". The species of snake that best suits your lifestyle, situation, personality, and care abilities will be the best one for YOU.
@LoriTorrini ah OK thank you so much
I am sooo glad I found your Channel. Really great Help. Thank you❤
I have 4 cats amd will buy a pvc plastic with glass at front. Thank you for this video. Soo helpful. Im so excited about getting a snake. My friend had snakes. She didn't really know how to take care of them they all died. Im gonna go and do alot of research about snakes. I would love a green one . I recently just fell in love with snakes theyre amazing. Again thank you for the video also i will make a dedicated room for the snake. Imma watch more of your videos. And question dk you still have cats?
Yes. We have several cats here.
do you notice a difference in behavior when you are not filming? auto focusing cameras emit light invisible to the human eye. my dogs and cats, and i suspect, my snakes, react differently as soon as i start trying to take pictures or video.
Phones and cameras do normally emit IR which pythons and boas along with some other animals can perceive. I don’t notice any difference in behavior when I am filming during training and not filming during training. Animals learn to ignore what is irrelevant to them and pay attention to the cues that impact them, such as the training target.
You and Bob over at Green Tree Pythons have changed how I keep snakes. Being keeping snakes for half a century and I have always provided much larger enclosures than what most would use. I've always kept live plants, real wood as well as DIY items but looking back now this was done more for my pleasure not the snakes. Training a snake was laughable, until watching your videos. I have a young male Ball Python who learned that when the enclosure door is left open and I'm not doing something in his enclosure this is his clue that he can come out, which 75% of the time, he does. I'm ordering one of these play pens today. Thank you and Bob both for teaching this old dog some new tricks, lol!!!! Now it's up to to the rest of us to get these videos out there so others can realize what I have. God Bless
Rodney is looking so good! Love the set up
That's sick! I don't think I can tame a leopard gecko to do that. The best I have is for her to climb on my hand. I wouldn't want a loose gecko
@@G.r.e.g.g.l.e.s I am training one right now. It’s going really well and as long as you shaping the behavior incrementally using successive approximations you shouldn’t lose your Gecko. 🦎
That's awesome! I would love to set up stuff like that for my Cuban false chameleon but lack of space and renting makes it hard.
From personal experience all the 6 macklots I have/have had (except one) have been pretty much identical to yours in personality....I always describe them as inquisitive, gentle, interactive and bold. I really do not understand the reputation they seem to have gotten.
Do you have any recommendations for target training geckos that eat a Pangea paste diet instead of individual food “items”?
Yes, put small amounts on a spoon or on the target itself and deliver the food that way. I have some video of our gecko being trained that way as an alternative to tong feeding insects. He does both.
Incredible
I always tell myself if I want to handle something to get the cat instead- she loves to be rubbed and held and I have to remember snakes are wired much different
What bedding do you use for him??
He is rarely on the ground so I use whatever is handy. I think he has some kind of mulch on the bottom this time but he has had aspen, paper, coco husk, eco-earth, reptisoil.
Vala’s chirps are ridiculously cute! Love kitties. Would love to see some training videos on them as I work with my own cat.
I have done some target training with the cats. I’ll try to film some of the sessions.
What graduate school did you decide on?!
None of the vets in my state as fear-free certified. Those that are are 2+ hours away. Wondering if it would be better to have a fear-free vet out of state for check-ups and minor issues and another one close by for emergencies
How do you determine if they’re big/thick enough for the rodent cage?
How would you suggest dealing with a snake that is glass-surfing because they want out but you don’t have the time to let them out at that moment? Maybe offer them an enrichment item?
If my snake is comfortable with my presence in her enclosure, is it still necessary to wait until they’re in a hide box or to block off the hide box exit?
i have a corn snake shes 2,5 years and im afraid to pick her up and i want to over come that but im not exactly sure how exactly to pick her up without her getting stressed and i need some advice. And i need to move her into a bigger cage and idk how to introduce the new cage the best without her getting stressed! Helppppp!!
I have a playlist on Gradual Desensitization, a Choice-based Handling playlist, and one on managing shy snakes as well as several videos on transitioning snakes to new enclosures in ways to minimize stress. Those should all help you a lot! Please let me know if you can't find them and I can link them.
Every time I let my 3 cornsnakes out of their enclosure (individually, not at once) i rest my hand somewhat far away but still accessible, so they can come up to me if they want to, and maybe climb on me a bit, and every time they end up coming right to my hand, as relaxed as they could be, flick their tongue at it a bit, and then do the slowest bites you could imagine. I generally just let them currently since i don't want to accidentally do more harm than good, but i really would like it if they would stop doing that. Any tips regarding this? they all are relatively young i think (got them earlier this year from a neighbor that moved away). I always use long tongs when feeding, and never let the mice touch me directly. Olus i wash my hands after every feeding (additionally to the regular day to day hand washing) so i don't think it's a kind of scent.
@@KhaziirEverflight how are you communicating to them when food is available. If you don’t have a clear signal to tell them food is imminent they may be associating your hand with food and in the absence of something indicating a meal is available, they are tasting your warm mammal hand. I and many of my clients use a specific target of signal food but you can use winching else.
@LoriTorrini I usually use a small tupperware with a distinctly turquoise lid that i hold up to their enclosure before feeding them. I never have anything of that color near their enclosures otherwise.
Well that was the most polite and gentle nom ever. 😂😂
Hey Lori, I'm also in CO and I'm looking to get a first snake. Heard you talk about how these are great for folks living in Colorado because they have less humidity requirements. Any other snakes you recommend? Are these good snakes for beginners?
@@DMoneys36 Bredli and Inland Carpet Python adapt super well in pet homes and both adapt well to living in Colorado.
So true!!! Exactly my experience
Thanks Lori ,,,, u is a great one
I really love the 4x2x4 terrariums, they look so cool and fun
The second pothos sadly looks a bit overwatered, they should not stay sitting in water longer that 1h or they will develop root rot
@@JohannaPlants thank you. I was told the opposite, that they can grow in water with ok soil and that their roots need to stay wet.
@@LoriTorriniI’ve also read the same
It looks like the pothos has major root rot, maybe from being too dry for too long and then being watered, they can sometimes recover from this if they are being watered consistently. :)
Thank you! I’m new to plants and spend all my time researching reptiles, I need to make time to research the pothos.
A friend pointed me to EE's burrow buddy hides - truly the most ingenious snake hides I've EVER seen - and got one of those and an "Epic" size playground hoping it'd be big enough for my Brazilian rainbow boa; ended up having a great conversation with the owner and found out he's a sponsor of your channel - which was awesome because your videos have gone a long way to improve my husbandry and my relationships with my snakes! I just got them in yesterday. QUESTION: How do you suspend your playgrounds from the tops of the tanks? Drill a hole & use zip-ties, or something else?
If i could teleport up there I’d build out the rest of the enclosures for you!! Tell those guyscto hang on for a few months and I’ll do it when I can come up next!
I love this tour of the property and the animals. Had no idea you had that many horses and dogs 😊. Busy 24/7 around there. Late watching this: so weird considering I’ve never known snow unless we drove to it. Right now here in San Diego there’s a Santa Ana wind and 74 degrees.
I really want some but couldn't afford them right now. Will be part of when I can do enclosure upgrades since they won't fit yet, would only be able to do them in the playpen. I did get burrow buddies for my 2 royals a few weeks ago and they really like them! They ignored the first couple days as expected, but now most of the time I check on them, they are in them. I love they fit in well and can have something on top. I got the ones with the lid just so I could check on them if needed. I also crocheted them yarn hides but those have been mostly ignored haha. I can tell they've sat on them so I'll take it. I think they aren't finding the entry hole.
Those are VERY cool. What a nice addition to an enclosure. I like how the “rainbow “ one in the black cage looks. Some happy snakes right there👍
Not a big fan of pink, but I love the design. Fixing to the rear wall or ceiling is going to be a winner with all of my snakes!
Love it that’s a great enrichment item For the devils Ivy not doing so well It’s probably humidity The enclosure looks mesh or screen and devils ivy ( pothos ) dose better with its roots damp Add moss to the pot, mist the plant! Give it an brighter led growth light
@@the_animal_ark Thanks for the info about the plant. 🌱 🪴 I was afraid of watering it too much! I have been misting it so I will try more water. 💦
I wondered when stuff like this was going to start being made...
What size did you get? I have a 6 mo old ball python and I was considering these.
@@tanadv8145 These are the standard size but they do make a larger one. These would work for juvenile Royal Pythons or small adults.
My adult royals have the largest size but it does require some assembly and gluing.
I just bought two of these, one for each twin's enclosure! You must have gotten one of each I wanted because I had to get them in different colors. LOL
