5 Common Mistakes with the Back Kick (ft. KWONKICKER)

- Опубликовано: 20 мар 2019
- W.T.F. Taekwondo blackbelt Micah 'KWONKICKER' Brock shares 5 back kick mistakes that are common when throwing this spinning attack, including:
1. Spinning/over-rotating (this is a linear strike)
2. Stepping across with the lead foot (instead of stepping towards the target)
3. Not following through/stopping at impact (extend your leg through the target for maximum damage)
4. Keeping the support leg stationary (you should slide your grounded foot towards the target)
5. Striking with the ball of the foot (you must strike with the heel for maximum impact)

1. Kick straight, not spin
2. Step forward, not side step
3. Follow through with the kick
4. Slide with the kick
5. Hit with the heel (knee pointing downward)
Timestamp it
Side step is also powerful with the Joe Rogan kick -ushiro yoko geri/ dweet yop chagui- if you feint first with a low kick from opposite leg.
Was not expecting that voice
exactly what i said
sorry I can't hear you, speak with another voice
I wanted to write this comment if there wasn`t 😂😂
Hahahaa.. I was about to grab my coffee that's when he said "ok" and I was like what???😹😹😹
Sounds like Aziz Ansari huh lol
OMG, this is my favorite kick. Idk how many hours I've spend trying to perfect this kick. It's one of if not my most strongest arsenal when it comes to kicks. I've won tournaments with the "spinning" back kick lol I love the video and u guys are amazing. Thanks for the advice!
Then you would benefit from reading my corrections (on the main thread) to some of the bad advice given here.
Damn I wasn't ready for his voice lol. Wouldn't want to mess with him tho 0.o
James LaRoche 😂😂 me too
Man, I think I might make all of these mistakes 😂 at least now I know!
Unfortunately, he is actually incorrect about a few points. See my comments on the main thread.
Dude ur dumb right? I never trained mma in a gym just at home and i still can't understand how people can make here mistakes like its just dumb. If u work out in a gym for a long time and u did that mistakes u just don't have talent for that
@@al.ss11 bro most gyms don’t teach spinning back kicks they focus on fundamentals for months. That’s something you learn on your own usually which will result in mistakes
@@al.ss11 the reason you're saying that is because you're never done it lol clearly. you do realize you're calling a pro muay thai fighter dumb right? Nick Salvatore is right also. when mma, kickboxing or muay thai gym is packed with 40 people instructor cant come to each and every one of them and keep repeating what they're doing wrong. when so many guys train on one mat there is always the same advice an instructor gives you and thats "keep your hands up". there is not really anything else they'll stop by to tell you unless to tell you that you're going too hard. unless you have a personal trainer chances are you'll make a lot of mistakes with literally every technique even with something as simple as a jab.
WOW! I just practiced it for one year, but now i practice it for half and hour and i get it correctly! Thanks a lot! It would be great of you would do a hook kick video mistakes!!!
I did WT sparring way back (before e hogus) and they never taught us to use the back kick for straight-up offense. As noted, the sideways stance is a good deterrent against this. It was instead, taught as a counter attack. When your opponent throws a roundhouse (specially to the body, as is common in WT matches), they move their trunk forward, opening up a chance to nail them with this straight at the solar plexus.
This is a good point. The 'turning' back kick should only be used defensively or as a follow-up technique in combinations.
Also, when I'm using it defensively, I personally like the jumping version. That way, if I'm late on the draw, instead of getting jammed up and being pushed over, I can push off the opponent and land back in my stance
True. The spinning back kick, or dwit chagi, should never be used in offense as the lead kick. The same follows with and spinning kick, except maybe the helicopter kick/killer/360 roundhouse (whichever way you prefer to call it), since missing it or having it blocked can and most often will leave you open for a counter.
@@rockerguy9683 I prefer the side kick counter to a roundhouse rather than a back kick. Yeah the back kick has power but it has the potential to glance off the opponent due to the turning motion of the roundhouse so you have to know exactly were to throw it, while with the front leg side kick your able to maintain constant visual of your opponent so you can adjust your aim. Also the front leg side kick beats them to the punch due to it being a direct bee line to the opponent
Yeah but you got to be quick LOL
Thankyou so much for these segments, they are hugely informative. It’s a joy to watch the evolution of you, day one since your Dread days
I love this channel. So technical and well dissected. Keep up the amazing work guys!
I learned this as the "turning" back kick - better name I think
love your videos bro...keep doing the excellent job 🤜🤛
Thank you a million times over. I was always throwing more of a spinning hook kick, but that breakdown of how to turn has helped tremendously. Now i just have to work on set up and speed
How did you not include a clip of him actually showing the kick on the bag -.-
Why would you need that, hes showing you what to do. Do it on the bag yourself lol
Cuz he's already showing us
Yes!
@@jamiewalsh9184 really?
There is a million clips online of kwonkicker he’s a RUclips vet
This was so well conveyed. Many thanks!!
What I find tremendously interesting, is that a lot of people with amazing spinning back kicks seem to do/teach them very differently. Knee pointing down vs knee up by the hip. I think that all of them are right to some degree and that, with any technique really, they're variations that are useful in different scenarios. It's helpful to understand the logic behind those variations.
Damn Zodiak Those are two different techniques: back kick and turning side kick. The former is a bit more sneaky, the latter is a bit more powerful.
Knee down is less effective (like throwing a straight right from down to up) as it diminishes the power potential of body dynamics. Knee up is optimal.
@@-WiseGuy- no..you do not think that. At least not if you're a fighter. They're diffetent kicks with different applications and different pros and cons. Saying knee up is optimal is bullshit.
Shane I have really been watching a lot of your videos lately and... Your teachings and techniques are a gold fine for me... Thank you keep up the good work and enjoy your journey as a martial artist
Amazingly educational video. Have rewatched 3 times already and still learning practicing etc...
Ma man, been waiting for this one
Always been a big fan of Shane and kwon, keep it coming guys👍
Amazing detailed explanation. You both are simply awesome.Learning everyday.
I just finished 3 rounds of 2 minutes shadow boxing and started watching this, Keep up the good work.
I truly appreciate the attention to detail you guys give your videos!...
Especially, the emphasis on injury prevention!...
I have a background in Taekwondo, karate, wrestling, and, of course, BJJ. ...
But, after suffering a debilitating back injury,... I had to take a few years off. .. :-\
But, now that I got the "All Clear" from my doctor,... the MMA bug bit me, and I'm ready to begin training, again!.. :-)
I feel like I'm starting from square 1, again!.. :'-(
But, this time around I'm being extra careful so as to reduce the possibility of reinjurying my back!.. :-!
So, keep up the good work, guys!...
And, I will keep watching,... and training!.. :-P
I will only write two words. Muscle memory. 😊
Great videos a lot to learn here. Amazing content. Ouss
Excellent work you have really helped me as I continue in my kickboxing class.
you guys are awesome for teaching all this stuff for free. Liked and subbed.

Great video
Really well explained !
Very good pointing out the difference between a spinning side kick (generally used for forms) and a proper back kick (used for sparring). Also, it's nice that Kwonkicker points out the paint-the-line analogy. It helps to practice just that painting move ending in a deep step backward with your rear to the opponent. As you may have guessed, this position compromises the kicker against grapplers going for the back, but as in anything, it's a calculated risk with potentially big payoff in the form of a KO more painful/demoralizing than a headshot.
Umm . . .NO! a turning side kick is much better for sparring, you have more control and far easier to sight your target before extending the kick. And NO again! He did not show any proper spinning side kick. IF you throw a spinning back kick in tkd competition it is very likely your opponent will jam the kick and you could get a penality for showing your back to your opponent. It has happened to me when trying to throw a reverse side kick when I was too tired.
7:47 playing mortal combat knowing only one combo but still somehow winning
Great explanation.
YESS ! I got my rib cracked by one of these kicks a few weeks back and have been trying to learn it ever since.
Thank you sir for your brilliant advice, I will practice this
Thank you very much for this video !
Great stuff. Just was practicing this exactly today
great video!! I just learned to do this kick yesterday!
A video on tornado kick would be a real help !!🙏🙏
DIVYANSH AGRAWAL he allerady coverd it
he already did a few
Check out his conor mcgregor 360 kick
Thats easy
Excellent instructions!
Thank you 🙏🏼 it only took me te tries to get the gist of the back kick! You guys are good teachers 👊🏼
Two, 2
GREAT TEACHER!
Thanks guys
Glad to see you cooperate with one another
first time i get to this cahnnel, checked another video and i am subbing, the only comment is that i would like to see abit more of a practical demostration at the end, watch some action with focus on the demostrated technique. i practice martial arts and for the most part i already knew this, but still helps with the tips.
I am really glad to hear that the ball of the toe thing with the ankle pain happens occasionally even when they were competing.
Good stuff. Especially good to hear someone else pointing out the knee should be pointing down.
Can you make a video about muay thai kicks? How to trow them, where to aim...Nice video btw 😉😉
sometimes when doing heavy back kicks on my thai bag, if the ball of my foot lands first, it hurts like hell on the tendon on top of my foot. (whoa as im typing this shane says it! lol
We learn more from our mistakes than from our successes.
Your foot is crushing and causing too much tibial stress. Do a tibial raise and look at how far your foot can go upwards. When you hit the bag full force and don't hit directly on the heel you will bend your foot beyond it's farthest natural limit and it will hurt due to hyperextension. Speaking from experience!
Very good tutorial! I will apply this. it is a mistake not to push after kicking
Shan I'd like to say that your work is awesome and I'm so sad that I don't have enough time to see every one of your useful clips.
I don't know whether you see my comment or not, but I wish you health and goal achievements.
Nice video, back kick was something I always replaced with a back sidekick as I never quite grasped it
Great tips!
I especially appreciate the point about it not being a spinning technique-I made a video about that very thing a couple of weeks ago. :)
Solid solid!!
Thanks shane ive been working on my back kick
Wow amazing. I didn't know people could get the back kick wrong in so many ways lol
Great point of striking with heel/edge-of-foot technique. Majority of practitioners forget the importance of its purpose.
Good video. Mistake #6.., telegraphing your kick
Key points to improve myself
Hi Shane 🤘, please make a video on hook kick mistakes
All the mistakes mentioned in the description are correct. I have seen so many people claiming that the spinning back kick is useless, only because they have been doing it wrong the whole time. Good job on the video.
I'm so glad that he brought up people crushing their feet with this kick. I stopped throwing this for a bit because I didn't want to break or sprain my foot
I want video on back kick and here thnx sir❤🤙
This guy is spot on, I don't why people nowadays even call back kicks "spinning". Being brought up through Taekwondo myself with the philosophy of turning on the ball of your foot rather than "spnning", (should be most cases with Taekwondo practitioners)as the back kick originated from Japanese/Korean martial arts(correct me if I'm wrong), while this "spinning back kick" is some term generated by the MMA and UFC base.
No. The traditional schools I went to as a kid were INCORRECTLY calling it a "spinning back kick" long before the rise of MMA & the UFC.
I am a master and hearing them sing the mistakes that people make that I've seen it's good refreshing remind.
Thank ya 👌🏼
Good man.
Joe Rogan said bring the knee up high...gives more power🤔
Yeah I watched the same video. His kicks are insane. But it's sad that those videos are super old and he hasn't filmed any since :(
Joe's back kick has more mass behind it because of the chambering of the knee, but this style of back kick has more acceleration. Force = mass * acceleration. Depends on what you are looking for. Though, granted, Joe got so good at this particular style, that the acceleration ended up being very high in addition to a higher amount of mass behind it.
My kenpo teacher taught it to us like both ways.
Rogan's video is a turning SIDEkick not back kick
@@jimmgreenharvest906 spot on
Oh yeah! awesomeeeee
You and kwonkicker make a good team.
Lovely, best tip was well worth waiting for at 08:35. Keep the knee pointing down. As an observation; one of the main tips you've shown went unmentioned but you automatically did it nearly everytime you initiated the kick---use your left jab or hook first to set up the kick. As others have mentioned, a little demo, full blast on the heavy bag would have been good, especially since you had Shane to 'spot' the bag for you.
This is actually one of the mistakes he makes in his suggestions. Would you throw a right cross from down to up? No. Maximum linear power requires the technique the begin perpendicular to the target.
It's sad to know Kwonkicker is no longer doing this tyoe of content. But his choreo channel is awesome!
Number 1 mistake: attempting the spinning back-kick without knowing how to.
I disagree: Number 1 mistake: attempting the spinning side kick and calling it a spinning back kick when you don't really know the difference.
Thank you
You should invite us on sometime. We could show you both striking and grappling.
😂😂🤣🤣🤣

Great details. Can you get kwonkicker to show some setups for this kick
Very nice
Please, Shane. Do a video about combat fundamentals, like fighting philosophy, fighting basics and strategies. Don't know how to call it.
"your never too good at a back kick to warm up that accuracy" VERY TRUE!!
I love back kick
Fight tips assemble!!!!
great vid guys but you should also show it on a training shield to get a full sense of the kick in normal speed
That Guy is a great teacher.
Basics.. people really need to watch this Step by step video. Lol I still call it spinning back kick and the first person to tell me it’s a half spin but Technically you’re correct. But love the videos keep em up. I remember coach would be mad if I didn’t step up for a back hand, back kick and heel hook and I never put power on em during sparring. funny thing was I was the only person in the gym who didn’t get in troubled for using em and I know why to with only 10 to 20% of power I was cutting people and if u didn’t practice correctly u would be just throwing back hand or kicks and not even landing but for some reason I was a sniper with em and like I said coach would get piss and tell me step up before I throw em and i remember if anyone else would do it they would have to do push up... which was Weird he hated people doing em but didn’t mine me.
I’m so happy I figured out how to do this...favorite kick😂😂Jesus I’m so dizzy 🥴
Now learn jumping back kick. Instead of knee down, its knee to chest. Imagen jumping and spinning 180 degree with your knees on your chest. Then through the kick. Crazy power on that one
Thank you! This was extremely helpful, since I've been having trouble with back kick
NICE
Damn I remember learning to kick from this guy's videos many years ago, he's aged so noticeably
i love kwonkicker
It sounds like the mistake is in the naming conventions, not the various techniques.
Like a spinning back fist involves the spinning torque. The same should be true of a spinning kick.
However, a regular back kick does not really involve spinning torque and is really just a back kick with minimal torque.
Agree/disagree, anyone???
The Sapien I personally call it a turning back kick as opposed to a spin because of that factor
For whatever reason kicking techniques have weird English names compared to their original names in Korean/Japanese. It's just called the back kick if translated properly.
If I understand you correctly, I agree. It is a 'turning' back kick (180 degree turn), not a 'spinning' back kick (360 degree spin). But the misnomenclature does suggest a flawed approach to the technique.
@@ORTIZ17113
Indeed.
@@brandonrim836
Incorrect. A back kick is done backwards with the lead leg. A 'turning' back kick is necessary to execute forward and is performed with the rear leg.
Good
Love this type of video, but next time could you add a shot at the end of someone doing the technique perfectly on a bag 2 or 3 times. please !
kwonkicker uploaded a tutorial on his channel
Benny The Jet Urquidez had the best turning back kick hands down. He stopped many of fights with it.
Joe rogan:"hold my beer"
@@nazgulbarakas5767 Except Joe Rogan throws turning side kicks NOT BACK KICKS!
A lot of people are doing the spinning side kick 🤷 This guy is doing the back kick properly 👏
Would be interested for jumping back and tornado kick details.
