  • The most common types of roundhouse kicks thrown in MMA are usually a Thai-style, powerful swinging of the leg aiming for the leg, body, or head. However, by changing the angles and positioning of our foot, we can modify how we throw these kicks.
    1. Snap Kick ("Mawashi Geri" in Japanese)
    2. Thai-Style Roundhouse Kick ("Te Tat" in Thai)
    3. Mawashi Geri Chusoku
    4. Twist Kick or Inverted Roundhouse
    5. Ankle Sweep

the so called pivoting: you need to lift the achilles heel up before you can actually pivot, that will ease the process.
By pivoting the foot the rest of the body will follow (especially hips which grant the acceleration to hit strong).
You can precede to ease the lifting up of heel with a certain coordination of the body, I mean, you throw your forward arm ahead-up - this will lift up the body and consequently will make very easy to lift up the Achilles heel so the pivoting will flow (just check some Bruce Lee video in slow motion, Lee used the finger jab to hit, to defend and to do this kinda coordination).

ALMIGHTY GOD KABIR is the father of all souls that JESUS, MOHAMMAD, GURU NANAK, VEDH was telling in BIBLE, QURAN, GURU GRANTHA SAHEB
.. In OLD Orthodox Jewish Bible KABIR is mentioned...KABIR means (ALMIGHTY GOD) in hebrew...but when translated in different languages translator removed KABIR word.....Quran written in arabic has also KABIR word....KABIR means Supreme in arabic.....In vedh also Kabir is mentioned.....U will get surprised that in Holy book of SIkh called PRAANSANGALI…. GURU NANAK himself described that Lord Kabir is his Guru and Lord KABIR met him..and in GURU GRANTHA SAHEB Guru Nanak called Lord kabir as kartar (GOD)..but todays Sikh says that GURU NANAK had no Guru........Just by reading holy books it is impossible to get depth knowledge of Holy text because we are just a living beings.. In vedhas also KABIR is mentioned...our brain isnot capable and doesnot understands the secrets behind the words and world.....JESUS AND MOHAMMAD both were aware of LORD KABIR but later followers were not able to get depth knowledge .....In bible it is written that Jesus was son of FATHER... then WHO IS THE FATHER?
Brother/SISTER LORD KABIR has send the messenger in present time in the form of SAINT RAMPALJI MAHARAJ... BIBLE, QURAN, VEDH, GURU GRANTHA SAHEB are holy books of Christain, Hindu, MUlsim, SIKh & all these holy books are suggesting one ALMIGHTY GOD KABIR but today preachers of different religion doesnot understand the secrets thats why HUMAN society cannot get full benefits from ALMIGHTY GOD...As a result more and more people are becoming non believer.....

The ankle sweep in karate is also called Sokubo Kake Uke, and the last kick you can called it soto mawashi geri, there is a kick called Gyaku mawashi geri with the same principle of a front kick but you penetrate in an inverted way like a half moon from the outside to the inside, kind of hard to explain but look for it, as always very pleased with your videos Shane!

in Savat, doing this with the outside of the foot is called the Outside Kick. with the ball of the foot, is the Comma Kick, with the heel is the Hook Kick. Unless you're a Freak Athlete, trying to perform these kicks in a Real Fight is a Terrible Idea. But for sport fighting, you can land something slappy for a cool highlight...

Furthermore, the knee chamber for taekwondo for snap kicks have the role of lowering telegraph. Taekwondo sacrifices power for speed/telegraph reduction. Since virtually all kicks in taekwondo start with a knee chamber, it's more difficult for the receiver to determine if resulting kick will be a mid roundhouse, a high roundhouse, an axe kick, a cut/push/side kick, a hook kick, etc.

Cool video. Two minor corrections: Don't straighten your support leg on the snap kick. Keep a slight bend and sit on the kick as you pivot.
For the "twist" kick, sit more, keep the sole of the foot planted (don't come up on your toes so much) and twist the hips more. It's kind of a counter spin motion. Rick Hatton has a great video on this specific technique. Check it out.

Shane, you don't need to worry about your toes with the #3 kick if you have footwear in a street fight (boots should help). I like to add #6. It's #3 but instead of going around, from the chamber position, you pivot then unroll your kick with the foot going straight ahead. You can say it's a mixture of front snap and roundhouse snap to fool the opponent.

Could also try a Chaiya kick, which is a short ranged roundhouse kick. When you're on the inside (or at least too close for a traditional Thai kick) you just fire your leg up (with a 90degree bend), torque the same side shoulder (without swinging) and come up right into their ribs. I've recently started using this in sparring and seen some decent results in it as they keep expecting a knee down the centre or into the side.

Do you have a video of what youre talking about? Im having a hard time picturing what youre saying and i did a search for a chaiya kick and didnt find anything that described what youre saying here. Thanks.

I was hoping for a question mark kick since you mentioned Saenchai. Great Video, anyway!

In karate you don’t actually lift you foot to the front when doing a mawashigeri(roundhouse kick), but you lift it from the side

I agree, it allows to use the rotation of the hips to drive the power in rather than just a snap.

When we practiced the snap kick, i flopped so hard on my back and it was painful. I really need to work out my balance.

When I was young during elementary school sometimes I get into fights and I didn’t know martial arts at that time.I didn’t know to kick so I always kicked with the balls of my feet. When I got introduced to Muay Thai, I realised I was wrong but now that I’ve watched ur video I will definitely use the third kick again and tell ppl I’m not wrong xd

For all these years of practicing taekwondo , I never realized I actually turned my kick into a Thai kick with a snap at the end.

The last kick is what I call an Inside Front Kick. It's used mainly for body kicks. Good job on the kicks anyways.

I thought there is only one kind of roundhouse kick but there are 3 kinds of impacting the kick: 1. SHIN impact, 2. IN-STEP impact, and 3. BALL -Of- THE- FOOT impact.
