Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

Awh thankyou I thought only 1 looked like me lilly the ginger one🤣 but possibly not 😍 Oliver guessed 400 so he will be right. Yes he's great in all aspects of farming and machinery he buys well and makes sure they pay.so I have every confidence in him. He makes the right decisions for us and I admire him for that!.

Yes I have every faith in him, he nos what he's doing! He will earn it back with work this summer, so I leave him to get on with it. 😂

He's not grumpy all the time. He's right in what he says, tho🤣 up bringings show through He's had a rough time I havnt .so.... I respect him and how he is and loved him for 16 years 🤣 I wouldn't be with him if the bad outweigh the good. He's a good egg. We can't afford a wedding at the moment so he's my fiancee still 🤣🤣

Letting the UK down? Haha, dont be silly. we are a good example of first-generation farmers of the UK
The people that come to the countryside getting in your way probably live in sone shitheap if a city; so don't begrudge them a bit of fresh air; It is annoying that townies regard the countrside as a leisure facility not a place of work; with your channel you can help teach them how to behave (like your bit about cows being dangerous). when I was a kid there was something called the Countryside Code (there were posters about shutting gates and not letting your dogs chase sheep etc.) I wonder what happened to that?
Seems like visas cycle to keep up with replacing repairing & upgrading.
a lot of fert spreaders aren't making big money .........the cost of the fertiliser i suppose. those silage trailers will make fair money i reckon.. some almost new stuff there makes you wonder why there selling it when it's nearly new. i'd be interested in what that MF390T makes ........i got one the same as that .........always nice to know what the trade is. good price for your sheep i reckon........don't spend it all on machinery
Trust me, I won't be going on machinery 🤣 it's gone to some rent that's due. ! No i reckon it won't make much but better than Sat there doing nothing all year. I will record it for you on Friday 👍

Trade is slipping a bit now with ewes and lambs. We usually stick to bentham wich is our main auction. But turned them out see previous video or one b4 that We fancied a change really and never sold at skipton before. So tried them :) and are happy

They have Facebook and its on website. Not sure its a live or online bidding .but anything impaticular you wanted to see I can film 😄

Driving through Settle……….no seat belts. It’s not your driving it’s the others on the road you have to worry about. I know those roads really well and there are hundreds of trucks up and down all day.

That machinery sale fills me with envy. Here in Guernsey where I live we have nothing like that. I have a tiny farm and I spotted one or two things I’d love to have…. 🥲
No machinery sales ? Have you many auctions? Is it all small scale at gurnsey? Verry interested. Ah I feel for you ! What we're you after ? I will film the sale if that helps... or might not.
We only have a dozen farms left looking after about 2,000 cows in total. So not a lot of surplus machinery for sale at any one time.
