    Possibly the darkest of all the Alien films. Absolute hopelessness and dread. As good cosmic horror should be. Great cast and acting as well. Nice to see people watching it.

      I completely agree on the assessment of the tone of the movie. I don't think it classifies as cosmic horror though. Not every hopeless scifi movie is cosmic horror. Xenomorphs are pretty cool and for their preys they are pretty terrifying/traumatizing, but at the end of the day they are just very dangerous animals.

    • @chestbuster1987
      @chestbuster1987 5 месяцев назад

      @@IceCenders to my mind, the alien represents death or the uncaring nature of the universe. It cannot be reasoned with. You don't know where it comes from. You don't know its goals. All you know is that it wants to use you or kill you. I'm saying this from the perspective of the characters in the film of course. For the, I would say that it is very much the fear of the unknown.

    • @IceCenders
      @IceCenders 5 месяцев назад

      @@chestbuster1987 its goals are not particularly mysterious. Also that reasoning could be applied to absolutely any deadly enemy in any scifi movie or TV show. The wraiths in stargate? Cosmic horror. The sith in starwars? Cosmic horror. The borg in star trek? Cosmic horror. IMO that's not the case.
      To me a deadly enemy in space does not imply cosmic horror. It's scifi horror, space horror, sure, but cosmic horror has a much more precise definition that isn't just about having a very threatening and mysterious evil thing roaming free in the universe. It's not enough. You need the idea that it defies all human ability to comprehend it, that it drives you completely mad (and not just terrified), that the universe itself is indeed uncaring, but not in a metaphorical way, more like in a literal way. You need the protagonist to be put face to face not with some acid-blooded giant parasitic insect, but to something that they simply can't process, that defies all logic of any kind, that isn't just dangerous and something they've never seen before, but something they can barely describe or comprehend. The shark in Jaws is scary and its existence is a mystery, but it's still not cosmic horror. That's the same for Alien(s) even if the setting is in space (cosmic horror doesn't even require the sci-fi or space element).
      Otherwise you could say that any scifi horror (or indeed just sci-fi action movie/TV show) is cosmic horror just because it implies that the universe is full of evil and "doesn't care" about the fate of humanity.

    Newt was supposed to be the lead. The studios forced Sigourney/Ripley into the writer's script and made them kill her off. Another version before that was she went to earth and the script focused on Hicks and Ripley.

    • @Painocus
      @Painocus 26 дней назад

      Newt was never supposed to be the lead. The earliest scripts have Bishop and Hicks be the leads, Ripley be unconscious for most of the film, and Newt get sent to her grandparents on earth. The next script had Newt, Hicks and Ripley all die off-screen before the film even begins. The next had two versions, one with an all new cast, and one with just Ripley. Next script killed off Newt, Hicks and Bishop at the start, with the author specifically saying he wanted to kill her off asap. The next script after that, which is the earliest version of the one actually used in the film, has the lines "it spears Hicks through the head" and "Newt's jerking and twitching carcass" in the first scene, so I bet you can guess how that one turned out. None of what you said happened, except that Newt was sent off to earth in an early script. In all of the scripts where Ripley is not in it she is killed along with Newt, except one where all their faiths are never explained. So when was she "forced" into the script? And which writer was it that was forced to do it? The film had like 10 different writers if we count all versions of the script, and in the scrip of the second-to-last set of writers Ripley lives (admittedly by very contrived means, basically the script's closest equivalent to Dillon makes the xenomorph inside Ripley leave her and go into him instead by beating on her chest), while in the last set of writers' scrips she always dies. So who was forced to change it? Or to add Ripley for that matter, since both these scripts always had her as the only survivor, and the only ones to feature an alive Newt at all were the ones by the very first writer?

  • @Fettman89
    @Fettman89 Месяц назад

    To be fair though, they'll never really get rid of all the known Xenomorphs until they destroy the derelict ship found in alien 1, there were hundreds on there and only one egg hatched and latched onto Kane, then in Aliens, in the extended cut at least, only 1 from the same ship latched onto Newt's dad, so that's like 2 out of hundreds. It's assumed the one facehugger from aliens basically became the queen who then started laying her own eggs, so all those other eggs in the derelict ship theoretically are still there, intact.

    • @mdroid7755
      @mdroid7755 Месяц назад

      Bishop said the blast radius would be 30km, just under 20 miles. Assuming the derelict was within such a short driving distance from Hadley's Hope, and that's likely given the Jordans brought their kids out for the prospecting trip in the Daihotai like going on a day drive, it could have been wiped out when the atmosphere processor blew up. And it seems that was the case since General Perez in Resurrection says that Ripley had succeeded in wiping the xenomorphs out for the the 200 years until they remade her.
      That's just going from the information presented in the films, but I think in a comic or game they do eventually go back to LV-426 and find some lingering irradiated xenomorphs in the colony ruins. Either way, I think those get wiped out too in their respective story arcs.

    I saw the documentary for Alien 3. The original first director had two brilliant ideas and the studios or Walter Hill shut them down. The first idea was to bring the story to the aliens home planet and the studio said, "No one wants to see that". Then he wrote a script where they came to earth and the studios said "It's not believable. No will believe aliens will come to earth", so he quit. They went through multiple directors with crappy ideas and some good ideas and ended up just hiring a rookie who will puppet what they tell him. And rushed this out because if they waited too long Sigourney Weaver's contract would expire. That was the big reason they rushed it. The original idea from the original director didn't even need Ripley. She was a last resort last idea by the studios.

    • @miller-joel
      @miller-joel 6 месяцев назад

      It's not about Sigourney Weaver's contract "expiring." It was pay or play, so she was going to get her paycheck even if the movie didn't get made. So from the studio's point of view, making the worst movie ever was still better than not making it at all. They had to pay her either way.

    Hey, Reema! I commend you for reacting to this! This is the bleakest of the Alien Trilogy but my favorite of the series! Unfortunately, you didn't see the superior ASSEMBLY CUT version aka the Special Edition available on Prime and YT.
    The ASSEMBLY CUT is the closest to David Fincher's original edit before 20th Century Fox interfered and restructured the entire film eliminating the CAPTURE AND RELEASE of the alien as well as many character-building scenes which made the convicts less homogeneous. The theatrical release is functional but hurried and choppy with hardly any time spent building relationships or differentiating convicts.
    You are one of only a few reactors to the Alien franchise not to be scared off by the negative reputation the movie has but, unfortunately, you didn't get to see the full picture which might have enhanced your experience.
    Once one gets over the hump of the unceremonious deaths of Hicks and Newt, the film immediately draws you in to a new, harsher environment with terrific new characters and a horrible dilemma for Ripley.
    You DID NOTICE that the xenomorph takes on physical characteristics of the host in this case emerging as a QUADRUPED because the host was an ox. In the Theatrical Cut, the host is a dog. Previous hosts were human and the xenomorph was BIPEDAL. In the "Alien vs. Predator" films, the xenomorph takes on Predator characteristics! This fact alone makes this film an ESSENTIAL part of the franchise!
    There is another aspect of alien physiology that is touched on briefly. When the COMATOSE ox is brought into the slaughterhouse, one convict briefly holds up a dead facehugger he finds on the flatbed they hauled the animal in on thinking it's a crab-like critter from Fiorina they've never seen before. It's darker-colored with spiny, webbed appendages. The speculation is that facehuggers that produce queen embryos have the capacity to carry TWO OVA: a queen and a protective drone that prepares the nest. This is why the surprise egg the "Aliens" Queen left aboard the 'Sulaco' produces a single ROYAL FACEHUGGER that impregnates both Ripley and the ox.
    The xenomorph doesn't spit acid. It just projects its inner jaw to pierce flesh and bone. All the mouth slobber is just saliva.
    Bad pre-"Jurassic Park" CGI doesn't bother me when the story and characters compensate but many detractors roast the film for the sub-par CGI inserts of the xenomorph.
    A woman in a situation where men have been denied female contact for decades is in a precarious position because everyone wants a piece of her but Ripley commands any room she walks into!
    I liked the juxtaposition of birth and death during the funeral scene. It creates an atmosphere of inescapable doom.
    This is the only Alien film in which we see the xenomorph actually FEED on its kills.
    The title card states that Fiorina is a DOUBLE-Y CHROMOSOME penitentiary. That's why Dillon refers to the inmates as 'Y-chromos'. Whether they are naturally-occurring or genetically modified mutations is never made clear.
    The characters were well-drawn and vividly brought to life by a terrific British cast!
    Unflappable Dr. Clemens was a young CHARLES DANCE who later played Tywin Lannister on "Game of Thrones".
    Stern Preacher Dillon was CHARLES DUTTON who was then the star of a popular dramedy called "Roc". Before becoming an actor, he spent time behind bars for real!
    Snide Warden Andrews was BRIAN GLOVER who played the superstitious Yorkshireman in "An American Werewolf in London".
    Assistant Warden "85" was RALPH BROWN who later played Naboo pilot Ric Olie in "The Phantom Menace", Dr. Faustus in "Agent Carter" and Gen. Clinton in "Turn".
    Smelly, crazy Golic was a young PAUL MCGANN who later played an iteration of Doctor Who.
    Firebug David was PETE POSTLETHWAITE, a prolific British character actor with a distinctive mug who has had too many high profile roles to mention!
    Murphy, who gets diced by the industrial fan, was CHRISTOPHER FAIRBANK, another prolific British character actor who appeared in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise.
    Rapist Junior, who sacrificed himself to trap the alien in the Assembly Cut, was HOLT MCCALLANY, a prolific American character actor. His sacrifice redeems his attempted rape of Ripley!
    LANCE HENRIKSEN reprises his role as a battered Bishop and plays Company Exec John Bishop Weyland, the 22nd-century descendant of Company co-founder Charles Bishop Weyland seen in "Alien vs. Predator".
    MICHAEL BIEHN was so angry Hicks was killed in the script that he refused the use of his likeness for a dummy which is why his corpse's face is bashed in! He finally permitted use of his face for a computer image and was paid more for that than for his role in "Aliens"!
    The studio refused to schedule the scene where Ripley confronts the xenomorph alone to test her theory that it won't harm her so Fincher took Sigourney Weaver aside and filmed the sequence by himself at the end of a shooting day to make sure it was included.
    Andrews' death is spectacular and surprising.
    Clemens' death is shocking and tragic.
    Dillon's death is brutal and noble.
    Both Ripley and Dillon give ROUSING SPEECHES to embolden the inmates!
    The Theatrical Cut shows the Queen larva BURSTING FROM RIPLEY'S CHEST as she plummets into the foundry clutching it to her breast as it wriggles helplessly! A great shot I wish was in the Assembly Cut.
    These men are the worst of the worst and the lowest of the low yet they rally heroically against a dreadful threat in sharp contrast to the soulless elitists behind the Company.
    This is a movie about REDEMPTION and SACRIFICE which provides a tragic yet heroic end to Ripley's tale.
    If you intend to see the "ALIEN vs. PREDATOR" films, then you need to acquaint yourself with the PREDATOR franchise. The first is an action classic with Schwarzenegger. Danny Glover's underrated urban-set "PREDATOR 2" features some memorable set pieces. Dark Horse comics explored the crossover concept inspiring Hollywood to make two crossover films with moderately successful to excellent results. They're fun and exciting guilty pleasures with the second one, "ALIENS vs. PREDATOR: REQUIEM", being particularly lean and mean. There is also a "PREDATORS" film produced by Robert Rodriguez that is definitely worth a look. "THE PREDATOR" (2018) REBOOT, however, nearly killed the franchise and should be approached with a great deal of trepidation! "PREY" is an 18th-century-set prequel to the original film that was released on Hulu! The Alien films have a RICHER SUBTEXT while the Predator films are more ACTION FARE but they're both fun sci-fi thrillers.

Most drafts of the script that was actually used for the film, as well as the work print, had it soft-retconed to just be a facehugger, which would be much easier to explain, but then the studio had to go back to the implication of Aliens and add in a new shot of an egg in the opening credits.
      I also have no idea what it means that they were "killed off with no explanation/backstory". We know how they died. Do you means show it on screen? Did you want to see Newt drown?
