Hi JT - evening. I am in Northern OH and was duck hunting last weekend around Sandusky Bay. It was a little rough on the Bay for my 16" Jon so we decided to try one of the local marshes.....with my 9.9 Merc that I bought new last Summer. Well... we didn't get very far. One of the other boats on the ramp had a Swamp Runner set up, I chatted them up and they love it. I watched them power out of the launch area w/out a problem. After watching a number of your videos (I subscribed too!) I think I am hooked. I'll keep the Merc for fishing in the Summer but I am definitely going to get one of these for Fall hunting in OH and for when I go up state MI for a few weeks every fall to duck hunt. For a 16" Jon I think I would need to go with the SwampRunner mid range set up with a 13hp motor, would you agree that is correct for that size boat?? Thanx again for what you do and stay safe! - Harvey
Hey Harvey, thank you very much for your support! so the main thing to consider with a longtail is your bottom width. I did make a video where it goes over the boat size, engine size, and shaft length - ruclips.net/video/AyV6SsOjh3A/видео.html most people put the 13hp on a 1436. I've had a few people put the 13hp engine on the tracker 1542 but said it was sluggish. Most people with the 1542 use the 22hp predator engine and large swamp runner kit. Check what your boat is rated for. Swamp Runner has great service so you could give them a call and they'll guide the best direction for what you need it to do. I'm glad to answer any questions you have too. Being a 16 foot jon boat, I would probably do the 22hp engine, the 13hp may get it on plane, but its going to struggle if you're trying to beat your way through mud and grass
Thx JTgatoring for your videos. Last spring, I bought one these units with the 6.5 Predator. I'm very happy with it and it took me places I can't go with an outboard. Question: I am thinking of putting rubber engine mounts to try and lessen the vibration on my tiller hand. Any feedback or recommendation would be great.
Thank you for the support Jari R! A few tips that may help...1)the swamp runner weedless props run smoother than the standard props. 2)if you are running the stock throttle&grip, order their black rubber grip by calling them or emailing them. If you look at my recent videos that what I'm talking about. It handles the vibration a lot better due to the extra thickness of the grip. 3)make sure your shaft is fully engaged and that there is no play or slop in the shaft by the prop or a wore out flange bushing. 4)make sure all your bolts and everything else are tightened down good.
Yes they were designed for use in saltwater. The shaft is galvanized and swamp runner has a saltwater shaft that has a stainless steel inner shaft that would require less maintenance.
Have you had any problems with it kicking out if the water, and having to force it to hold it in the water? Or does it just glide and you dont have to force it?
If its properly adjusted, you don't need to force it. Both of my longtails ride smoothly without forcing the prop in the water. I'm able to drive with one finger on the throttle.
You can customize your engine to meet your needs. Most people will keep it stock to keep it quiet. Some will run the exhaust down the tail and point it down toward the water but I don't think I've seen it in the water.
I would not think so. The predator engine sizes in Horsepower are 6.5, 8, 13, and 22. I do not know of an 18hp predator engine. I've run my 13hp predator for an hour straight at full throttle without any issues.
I’m looking for new Jon Boat. Just need more room than my 12 footer. I’m either gonna go with the 15 ft Alumacraft from Academy or the 15 ft Tracker Jon Boat from Bass Pro Shops. I’ve heard that the Alumacraft was slightly thicker by .? I can’t go any bigger because its got to fit in the garage per our HOA rules and I want to have 4 people max if I want to just get out on the water. Which do you think is the better boat?
I would go with the Tracker. I am running into transom issues with my Alumacraft 1436lt. I contacted Alumacraft about it and after a very long discussion they will not fix it or help to fix it because they said I voided my warranty by making a modification to the boat by installing the mud motor onto the boat. With the my Alumacraft, the transom support is off to one side and it didn't support my transom good enough and my transom has started to fail so that will be my next video series: fixing my transom issue. Also the Tracker transom has the support in the middle and the whole transom is fastened with bolts and nuts so you can add extra support or replace the wood if you needed to with ease. With Alumacraft, its all rivets so you would have to drill them out, bend some metal and fabricate something. Also the supports, or the ribs inside the boat, for the Tracker they are cylindrical, and in the Alumacraft they are square. The cylindrical ribs will be stronger. The Tracker 1542 is also 50lbs lighter and has the same HP rating, Max Capacity, and the same thickness of metal as the Alumacraft and the Tracker will cost less. The Tracker also comes with that hatch in the center seat. I would go with the Tracker if I were in your shoes. The only negative I see is that the height of the transom for the Tracker 1542 is 16.5" and on the Alumacraft the transom height is 15". The lower the transom, the better the longtail mud motor will run. You should still be fine but something to keep in mind!
+snikwad003 I got in a very long email conversation with them, I didn't call because I wanted it all documented, and they said clamping the motor on the boat was a modification 😐
I always use the 6.5 weedless prop from Swamp Runner. I used the regular 6.5 inch prop and it was fine, but the weedless road smoother and was the same speed if not a little quicker. I never went down to a 6.25 inch prop. A bigger prop with make you go faster but it will either; become harder to handle once you start to over prop the motor, or your motor will start to bog down. When you have a heavy load, and it sounds like your motor isn't reaching the full RPMs, then you need to step down your prop size. Just experiment and have fun with it! With the change from 6.25 to 6.5, on paper, you should get a better speed.
JT - Please answer this question. Is the exhaust on this motor under or above the water. I want to buy a motor that's more environmental friendly and this is my main deciding factor. Thank you.
Yes. There are many people that run rivers and rapids with a longtail. Depending on the current, the 6.5hp engine may not be enough and it may be beneficial to move up to the 13hp engine if you are in a 1436 jon boat
It depends what you need it to do and what you want. I enjoyed my 212cc engine. Finominal on fuel, light, and pushed the boat 12 mph. I have been running the 420cc engine for a year now and its still really good on fuel, a little heavier and more to handle, and I can go 20-23 mph. I am happy with both of the engines. If you are constantly picking your boat up and moving it, then get the 212cc engine but with just me in the boat, the 420cc engine will move the boat as long as the prop can reach water/mud to operate in. 212cc is also cheaper the 420cc engine. Any more questions, just ask!
What about over heating. I'm almost 16 and getting ready to buy a boat, this looks like it could be a good cheap motor will it over heat easily, will it make it 10 miles?!?
This engine does not overheat. It is air-cooled. Running it constantly in the Florida summers for miles and no issues. Sips gas too, a whole day of fishing and running around and I fill it up every other outing.
I ran this for about a year, did great. I wanted a little more power so I switched to the 13hp engine and have been running that for 2-ish year now and both the engine and the mud motor kit have been great without having any issues. Thank you for taking the time to comment Thomas 😁
I know the motor and kit holds up. I would think the jon boat would too so I would think it would be fine for saltwater. I have a different boat for saltwater. I only ride this in freshwater
I just ordered the mud skipper longtail kit and I’m getting an 18 hp duromax engine for it and it’s going on a 14 ft boat, what type of speed should I expect?
It depends on your hull width. Assuming you got a 1436 (not a 1432 [may go faster] or a 1448 [will go slower]) I get a standard 18mph with the normal fishing gear riding solo. This is with an SPS medium kit and 420cc engine. The "18hp" Duramax is 440cc so it's not too much bigger, definitely not 4hp more so I would expect the same results from it. I did not have the best experience with the mud skipper kit, but if you can get it to run correctly, you may get 18mph.
@@brandonwhite874 Alright, well longtail mud motors like skinnier hulls. So a 32" bottom will ride faster and easier compared to a 42" or 48" bottom. This is the measurement at the bottom of the transom, NOT from side to side.
It was easy to assemble the Swamp Runner kit to the Predator engine, and I was able to pick up and move this motor by myself to put it on the boat so I would say its easy.
The 6.5hp predator engine with the Small SPS Swamp Runner kit went 12 mph on this 1436 jon boat. It was on plane, and I would think it would plane any boat smaller than the 1436 without any issues.
It's a good experience and something that will build confidence. It will take a couple of hours, but you will be able to do it. The swamp runner kits come with very good instructions and if you can't figure something out, they are just a phone call away. You will be able to do it.
Their way to loud. They will ring your ears . but their easy to work on. Air cooled engine . i heard you can put bigger muffler on them to quit them down
With the stock muffler on the engine, its not that load. I normally wear hearing protection for everything and the 6.5hp engine doesn't bother me. Especially when you're moving. Now once you upgrade them and put on an aftermarket exhaust, yes, they are loud, obnoxiously loud.
It works very well! I can use this for bass fishing or when hunting season comes around I can remove the deck, to make it a little lighter, and use it for hunting!
When you are on the water, it doesn't feel like you're going fast at all. For me in my area, it is perfect because most of the water is no wake or idle speed😐 So if you are wanting to go faster than 12mph then you could do the 13hp. I also did it for cost because the 6.5hp motor and kit is half the price of the 13hp motor and kit.
The motor is a predator 6.5hp engine from harbor freight - www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engines/65-hp-212cc-ohv-horizontal-shaft-gas-engine-epa-69730.html and then you have the SPS Swamp Runner small kit that bolts onto the engine - mudmotorkit.com/catalog/product/view/id/2/s/mud-motor-kits/category/24/?___store=default I will check the links on the website and add these links to the articles where they should be located. Thank you for letting me know!
It would depend where you are located. In florida I just need a tag for a vessel and then a trailer tag. I know that some states require tags for engines, but they are starting to get popular enough to where the tag office knows what you are talking about and is able to classify as needed if you do need a tag
As I am looking at my alerts I see you may have found the video on the unboxing of the kit. I have many more videos coming out about the clp kit, including an assembly video and a water test.
If you have a flat back on your canoe or someplace to mount the motor too, yes you could. Swamp Runner makes kits for engines that are 2.5 hp all the way up to 40 hp. A good amount of duck hunters use the 2.5hp on canoes because it's so light and quiet.
In Florida motors do not have to be registered. I know a few people had the same question. That would be best answered on a facebook group or contacting swamp runner about it
Neither. Whatever speed you're getting is whatever speed you're getting.I don't know all the factors at play in your situation. I've seen people get high and lower speeds. There isn't a speed you should be getting. I generally have slower speeds than most people because I generally haul more weight than most people.
Well that was what I was asking. If you were surprised I got that speed or if that seemed on the lower end. I can put other 150lb person in the boat with me and it does not change the speed at all. I still get a solid 12 mph
I got a legitimate question and I'm wondering if anyone here in any other states have I ever ran into this problem in the state of Missouri where I live you have to have a tag on your motor that means you have to have Bill of origin or title for your motor so I don't see any way I can make a home built motor and get it licensed see here in Missouri are required to have your boat itself registered like everywhere of course your trailer of course has to be titled and license plates now trolling motors don't need anything that's what I'm currently using but any gas powered outboard motors also have to have a state sticker I guess it's the cut down on outboard motor theft
Someone has also mentioned this for another state. There are a few longtail mud motor groups on facebook where this question has a better chance of getting answered. These are the groups I am apart of - facebook.com/groups/1159407327494878/ and facebook.com/groups/306577453294922/
What is the bottom width of your 17ft boat? These motors do not handle well on boats wider than 48". If your boat is at or under 48" and is somewhat on the lighter side, the economical route would be a 22hp Predator and a Large SPS kit, or you can bump up the motor size all the way to a 40hp v twin Briggs that SPS makes a kit for.
Yeah... but after looking at it, it would still be a $600 kit though... $450 for the kit and $50 shipping and then get the predator 6.5hp engine on sale for $100 and you're right there, right?
The taiwanese do not call these a mud motor ! A Mud Motor is a American term ! These are not go devils ! They are not really meant to be mud motors ! Amazing as they are they are not mud motors ! How bout call them thai long tail motors ! Which is what they are !

Thank you for the support Let's Go Fishing! South Florida! As long as you can mount it on there and it can support it, it'll be fun hahaha
+Bills BuildAll The over all weight of everything should be around 85lbs
Let's Go Fishing! South Florida state
Just saw your video, pretty cool. How does your set up work in salt water?
I know the motor and kit holds up. I would think the jon boat would too so I would think it would be fine for saltwater. I have a different boat for saltwater. I only ride this in freshwater
DAMN DUDE! thats a crazy idea! I'm definitely sharing this video with a couple buddies
Thank you Rush Voorhis Outdoors! I hope find it useful!
Thanks for sharing!
I’ll have to check the width, it was my great grandpas boat so I’m not sure
@@brandonwhite874 Alright, well longtail mud motors like skinnier hulls. So a 32" bottom will ride faster and easier compared to a 42" or 48" bottom. This is the measurement at the bottom of the transom, NOT from side to side.
Nice ! Was it hard to mount the motor to it ?
It was easy to assemble the Swamp Runner kit to the Predator engine, and I was able to pick up and move this motor by myself to put it on the boat so I would say its easy.
Hi, how are you ?. Where did you buy the motor support fit? I'm interested in that, I'm from Paraguay.
Greetings and thank you.
Will this engine get on plane with a 10 12 or 14 foot jon boat?
The 6.5hp predator engine with the Small SPS Swamp Runner kit went 12 mph on this 1436 jon boat. It was on plane, and I would think it would plane any boat smaller than the 1436 without any issues.
@@JTgatoring thanks
How hard is it to put together I'm 16 and getting into this, and I have no experience dealing with engines
It's a good experience and something that will build confidence. It will take a couple of hours, but you will be able to do it. The swamp runner kits come with very good instructions and if you can't figure something out, they are just a phone call away. You will be able to do it.
@@JTgatoring thanks!
@@andrewvu1752 No problem! Have fun!
Did you use PVC board for your deck
I did not. It was the cheapest plywood I could find and then I panted it
Their way to loud.
That's a nice set up for a decent price.
It works very well! I can use this for bass fishing or when hunting season comes around I can remove the deck, to make it a little lighter, and use it for hunting!
Cheap enough for a second motor? It would be nice to have reverse
How to get a mud motor kit sps and at what price for Croatia Europa
I do not know. You would have to contact the manufacturer SPS Longtails
Keep helping people save Good
What size prop are you using in this video. And is it aluminum or stainless
6.5" SPS weedless aluminum prop
I cannot get ahold of sps. I've been trying for a month.
You don't try to get a hold of sps, you try to get a hold of swamp runner. They are the SPS dealer in the united states
Is the 13hp much faster than the 6.5hp
Yes. It is twice as fast for me
Do you feel it's fast enough for that size of boat or would one want to go up to the 11 or 13hp motor?
When you are on the water, it doesn't feel like you're going fast at all. For me in my area, it is perfect because most of the water is no wake or idle speed😐 So if you are wanting to go faster than 12mph then you could do the 13hp. I also did it for cost because the 6.5hp motor and kit is half the price of the 13hp motor and kit.
Where do I even buy it from? I’ve clicked all of the articles and what not but can’t find a way to purchase it!
The motor is a predator 6.5hp engine from harbor freight - www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engines/65-hp-212cc-ohv-horizontal-shaft-gas-engine-epa-69730.html and then you have the SPS Swamp Runner small kit that bolts onto the engine - mudmotorkit.com/catalog/product/view/id/2/s/mud-motor-kits/category/24/?___store=default
I will check the links on the website and add these links to the articles where they should be located. Thank you for letting me know!
I have the 22hp and it's very powerful for my 1648. I'm thinking about downgrading lol
Hahaha I bet! How fast does it go?
I just posted a video. I'm actually getting quite comfy with it. Also, did you pick your kit up at the local dealer?
Very nice.! I'll go take a look at it. Yes, I picked my kit up at a local dealer
With these motors r u still required to have tags and registration
It would depend where you are located. In florida I just need a tag for a vessel and then a trailer tag. I know that some states require tags for engines, but they are starting to get popular enough to where the tag office knows what you are talking about and is able to classify as needed if you do need a tag
JT when is the clap kit review coming out
Clp
As I am looking at my alerts I see you may have found the video on the unboxing of the kit. I have many more videos coming out about the clp kit, including an assembly video and a water test.
Does it reverse?
There is no reverse on this motor
Would this work on a canoe??
If you have a flat back on your canoe or someplace to mount the motor too, yes you could. Swamp Runner makes kits for engines that are 2.5 hp all the way up to 40 hp. A good amount of duck hunters use the 2.5hp on canoes because it's so light and quiet.
How u go about it being registered
In Florida motors do not have to be registered. I know a few people had the same question. That would be best answered on a facebook group or contacting swamp runner about it
I'm curious what would happen if ya tried to put this motor on something like those hand operated outboard motor???
I do not know what you mean.
Man, I don't see how you get 12 mph. I'm doing good to get 9 mph out of my 196cc motor, but I'm a big heavy guy.
So do you think I should be getting a lower mph or a higher mph?
Oh, that explains it, you a 150 lbs man. I'm more like 250. So, yes, you're getting faster speeds than me, but most people get that kind of speed.
These are the groups I am apart of -
facebook.com/groups/1159407327494878/ and facebook.com/groups/306577453294922/
Looks good👍
Thank you Jake!
What's that groovy song in the beginning?
It is linked in the description - Hip Hop Beat Instrumental - Chapter 26 - Eldienne Productions
JTgatoring sorry didn't see if in the description. Thanks!
Would one push my 17ft
What is the bottom width of your 17ft boat? These motors do not handle well on boats wider than 48". If your boat is at or under 48" and is somewhat on the lighter side, the economical route would be a 22hp Predator and a Large SPS kit, or you can bump up the motor size all the way to a 40hp v twin Briggs that SPS makes a kit for.
What kind of motor is that my guy
It is a Harbor Freight 6.5hp Predator engine and a SPS Swamp Runner Longtiail Mud Motor Small Kit
Wow thanks man . Just insane lol
👍
Reverse?
No reverse on the engine.
I had to skip past the glitching, but a good video
Thank you for watching and for the feedback👍
And it has no reverse
Correct
There now like 450 dollars a kit😭😭😭
Yeah... but after looking at it, it would still be a $600 kit though... $450 for the kit and $50 shipping and then get the predator 6.5hp engine on sale for $100 and you're right there, right?
Co ai biet teng viet nan kg
