🏰 Coimbra: Portugal’s First Capital & The Birth of a Nation!
Coimbra is more than just a university town-it's where Portugal was truly born! Join me as we explore the strategic, historical, and cultural importance of Coimbra, the first capital of Portugal and a city that shaped the nation.
💡 Fun Facts About Coimbra:
✅ Portugal’s 4th largest city with 115,000 residents
✅ Home to the 7th oldest university in the world 🎓 (UNESCO site since 2013)
✅ Former capital of Portugal before Lisbon took over in 1255
✅ Once a Roman settlement with an ancient aqueduct still standing today
📜 History Crash Course:
Remember the 7 major periods of Portuguese history? Today, we dive into Period 2: The Foundation of Portugal (1149), when King Afonso Henriques rebelled against his mother, won the Battle of São Mamede, and declared Portugal’s independence in 1139. But why did he move the capital from Guimarães to Coimbra in 1131?
🌍 Why Coimbra?
📍 Almost equidistant between Lisbon & Porto
🌊 Close to the ocean & the Mondego River for trade
🌿 Surrounded by fertile farmland & forests
🛡️ A strategic stronghold for Afonso Henriques’ conquest of Lisbon in 1147
🎥 We explore:
🏛️ The Royal Palace of Alcáçova - once Afonso’s throne room, now part of the University!
⛪ Igreja Santa Cruz - the resting place of Portugal’s first king
🏛️ The Aqueduto de São Sebastião - a Roman legacy that still stands today

Our first visit to Portugal about 2 years ago was to Coimbra. Beautiful! We will return..
As always … awesome videos … gorgeous city of Coimbra 🇵🇹❤️🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
Cheers Andy 🙏🏼
Thanks, Nick, for this video. My husband and I are moving to Portugal this year (2025) and Coimbra and the surrounding countryside are on our list of possible places to find a home. Before we found your channel, we already had retained a firm to help us with our relocation to Portugal and we have a Buyer’s Agent in the Algarve and a Buyer’s Agent in Coimbra to help us find a long term rental while we look for a permanent home. Otherwise, we would have contacted you. But, I did sign up for your newsletter!😊 Thank you (and Nick) for this very well done video. We are very appreciative, sir. 🙏🏼
You're welcome Jay, good luck with the move.

Welcome to Portugal
Don't forget to visit the Roman Ruins on the outskirts of Coimbra.
Bem vindo a Portugal
Não se esqueça de visitar as Ruína Romanas em arredores de Coimbra.
Absolutely loving this series so far! Thank you, Nick. We haven't explored central yet, I can't wait to go to Coimbra. A great video, informative but enough teasers to urge me to explore further. ❤
Fantastic! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I've just come back from 5 days filming up north and I can't wait to start editing it all.

I was taught at school that Guimarães was the first capital of Portugal, then it became Coimbra. King D. Anfonso III took the Court and moved to Lisbon in 1255, but the King did not sign any official document stating that Lisbon is the Capital of Portugal.
Beautiful city! I was there in 2022! I hope to return. Thank you Nick!🎉
It is lovely, thanks for watching 😄
nice, you've done your homework diligently. that is a good sign.
you should have visited portugal dos pequenitos...
i'm liking this series through portugal, keep it up!
Maybe we should have, it didn't really pique my interest though... Maybe I missed a trick!
The actual name of presente Coimbra was Aeminium. It change to Coimbra because after the destruction of Conimbriga the Bishop came to live in Aeminium.
Nowadays Conimbriga is a famous roman ruins. Maybe some 20 km from Coimbra.
10km
You know that the building where Passaporte is now, used to be the ‘Governo Civil’ - the ‘civil government’, a sort of administrative representative of the government in each district. They were extinct some years ago.
Obrigado Ana 👍🏼
I love that city, the history, the old centre and in the evening alot of good music on the streets. And thank you for telling some history, makes it more interesting and the city more beautyful. I like the channel very much, love the trips you make. Some of them i will try to make this year... a fan from the Netherlands
Hey there 👋🏼 Thanks for watching!
Thank you Nick & Nick for this video.
We visited Coimbra twice-stayed once. Wish we knew about Passaporte.
The riverfront is delightful, old town is very interesting and hilly (so not for living IMO), flat/livable areas appeared to be along river and near Coimbra Stadium-although Santa Clara across the river looked like a possible option. We heard about healthcare-in Coimbra, both good & bad so not sure. 🤷 Cheers. 👋🏻
Very interesting. Have flown above many times and always noticed the river, not knowing exactly where it was.Worth a look thanks to your heads up 😊
Are you a pilot?
stop this videos.
Why?
@@AlgarveAddictsthey drive massive property and live cost increases, and overturism. This is harfull for the locals, and their life style.
Nope
That feijoada de javali looks delicious!
Mm mm - too much good food in Portugal!
I was born about 15 KM from Coimbra.
If i had not moved to the USA i would haved attended Coimbra University.
One Fun Fact and one place worth visiting that you didn't mention in the video:
- Fun Fact: Coimbra is split by the river, unlike Lisbon and Porto, which are located only on one side of the respective rivers.
- Place worth visiting: the Portugal dos Pequenitos, a theme park dedicated to the portuguese culture and patrimony in Portugal and around the world. What makes it special is that all the buildings there are kids' size and they even have a replica of the old university building! 😃
Cool, thanks for sharing 👍🏼
Show ❤
É COIMBRA e não QUIMBRA!
Aí que tradução! 😂😂😂
Whiskey in the Jar! Cheers
I AM portugueses and was born on Coimbra. Ir you check history books you'll see that Coimbra still is the capital of Portugal! The document to change Coimbra to lisbon was never signed by the King.... Just check...
Obrigado por partilhar.👌🏼
Guimarães was the first capital of Portugal. And technically, Coimbra is still the true capital of Portugal since there was no official document transferring the capital to Lisbon like there was for Coimbra.
You're right, I'll change the title.
From what I've read, Guimaraes was the base of Afonso I and Portugal was a COUNTY (not a country yet) at that stage. In 1179 Portugal was recognized as a country by the Pope. However the general consensus is that the Treaty of Zamora was signed in 1143. Coimbra was the capital of Portugal as a burgeoning nation since 1131. So technicslly Coimbra IS the first capital of Portugal /changes the title of this video back.
@AlgarveAddicts So, Braga is not Portugal, yet it was capital of Celts Bragaerea, capital of the roman province of Galeacea and the only capital the Germanics Swabians had. Plus it was the spiritual capital of the Hispanias. The father of Henrique I is buried in Braga, not in a new town just from the 10th century called Guimaraes.
3rd biggest city 😀
Nope, that's Braga...
@@AlgarveAddicts Thanks Nick, I always thought that Coimbra was bigger 🤣
Yes Braga has about 200k population of I recall correctly.
V. N. Gaia, Sintra, Cascais… all have more population than Braga or Coimbra
@@Pedro-Martins6
Cascais?
Não é possível!
