December 2019 I stayed at the Radisson blue hotel for three days and to me it was just overrated because they didn’t even offer me complementary breakfast for what I paid almost $200 a night and I ended up switching and reserve a couple nights at the bayfront hotel and I paid maybe $27 and it included breakfast continental breakfast for two so I had a good time there for a couple nights...and also some good memories at the seven eleven right next to it with red horse beer in my hands...boy that beer was strong...good people in the Philippines and I can’t wait to visit again.

Hello Pea...as always your spot on...newbies have no idea whats in store for them...haha...they need your help for sure.
Also before I fly to the philipines I always send myself 2 Western unions to myself for when I arrive I go straight to wu and pick up the first one...thats a hell of a lot cheaper than the money exchange kiosk. I only pick up my 2nd western union only if there is an emergency like my cards get lost or stolen or I need cash to go to the hospital...and yes that happened in 2016, I had broke my ankle jumping off a big rock....and lucky I had that 2nd western union for the Chung wai hospitaI bill and meds at rose pharmacy in cebu..i always say think like a Marine when traveling abroad, if it can go bad it probably will. lol .. I always have a back up plan intact for emergencies.

I travel to the Philippines every couple of years for a week or two. The first thing I do is find (via the Internet) a hotel that has a safety deposit box in the room. Then I make a reservation. Next, I contact a reputable transportation service to take me to the hotel with a stopover at a good money exchange area. Then, I go straight to the hotel and put my passport, phone, credit card and any extra money in the safe. I always carry a copy of my passport photo page, a comb, and the money I plan to spend for the day. If I need more money, I just come back and get it. Lastly, I travel in casual clothes that make me look like an average person in the Philippines. That has worked for me.

You should inform your American viewers that there is a U.S. consulate office in the basement of the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City. It is open 8-12 am on weekdays, without prior appointment. If you will be in Cebu anyway, it's easier to go there than to the U.S Embassy in Manila. I have lived in the Philippines for 11 years, and your advice to newcomers here for a visit is priceless. Your knowledge of American slang is very good, too.

Saying thank you for all your vlog's & videos doesn't in any way pay you what you truly deserve. Please know that everything you're sharing is life changing, and I know in my case is taken to heart. Lots of good advice here. Thanks Pea. I learned years ago the benefits of traveling light. Less size and weight to carry around, easier to keep everything secure. When traveling I've used a money belt, positioned just below my waist, underneath my pants/shorts. That has always kept my money and documents safe. A small fanny pack worn with the compartments placed in front of my stomach, under a shirt when possible, has kept my phone, backup power cell, charger, etc safe. Staying on my body, in front where I can see/feel any attempt to take items from, has even stopped pick pockets so far. And after having had a bad experience, I never do checked baggage. If it won't fit in my carry on, it stays behind. With the exception of a coat, boots, etc that may be needed for cold/wet weather. These I will wear when boarding the plane, so not counted as carry on luggage. I simply strap them to my carry on when exiting the plane, if not needed right away. But such items won't be needed in the Philippines so will stay behind. And the items I never travel without now, my mini remote motion sensor alarms. One stays in my carry on bag at all times as an anti theft device. So everyone will know if someone tries to move it without permission. One also stays in my backpack. Plus I can place one on my hotel door to know when someone tries to enter my room. They have proven to be true life savers.

Don't be freaked out by the seemingly endless number of heavily armed police everywhere... even guarding the door of the local 7-11. Just give them a big smile when you have to interact with them, and they'll smile back at you and treat you okay.

That is great advice. One time when I was at a pizza joint in Turkey I had about 50 kids/teenagers around me all out of curiosity. Then after 10 minutes 2 armed police came by to break up the fun, lol. I was confused 🤔. One teenager told me that I looked like the 6 million dollar man..So I signed a autograph for him ie Lee Majors.......

So much great information from the most creative and well spoken channel about Philippines. What she said is true for many countries. She said the most important thing...travel light with just one carry on! I have done 2 months in Thailand with just 3 pair of underware, 1 tee shirt, 2 polo, 3 shorts, flip flops and a pair of jeans for the temples with all the toilet things. Laundry is cheap and easy to find all over. Many hotels have service. There won't be a chance to lose your luggage which is important to any travel and will instantly lead to stress right away.

To my surprise, my girlfriend didnt pick me up at the airport as she was working but she did keep very close track of my flight and had me go to her work at the market to meet her for the first time, in front of all her friends, have to say it was a wonderful moment of joy and happiness that I will never forget. To get there I had to ride a single motorcycle with a second rider behind me, good times, I loved every minute of the adventure actually.

Pretty much all good advice here... I might differ on advice for one or two things (I speak as a Westerner that has made 15 trips to the Philippines since 2016). In my experience, the airport actually DOES have a better exchange rate than most other places. Its also far more convenient, so that's where I usually change money. I would, however, suggest only changing about half of it there, in case you do find a better place. Also, you might not spend as much money as you think, and then you will lose out when you have to exchange it back again when you leave.
Also, I agree with taking taxis - far better than Jeepneys (and mostly air-conditioned too!), but Grab can also work and is usually cheaper than a taxi, but you might have to wait 10-15 minutes. Grab bought out Uber in Asia a few years ago and that's the main ride hailing app there now.
And about buying clothes there - if you are a BIG GUY (I am 6'4", 250 pounds), don't count on finding anything in your size! Filipinos are generally smaller than Westerners and the selection for large size clothing is tiny. The airlines misplaced my luggage on two different trips (once for 6 days going to Boracay and once for 3 days going to Subic). Boracay is a small island, and they don't have many places to shop for clothes, and they have NOTHING to fit a guy my size. I did find a t-shirt and some shorts at the SM Mall in Subic, the selection was ONE shirt and ONE pair of shorts in my size. Make sure that you pack a change of clothes in your carry-on in case your luggage is lost!

Good advice about flying into Cebu rather than Manila. The taxi ride through Manila is almost as challenging as the international flight. Get a hotel reasonably close to the airport on the 1st day. Your priorities will be 1) air conditioning, 2) stiff drink, and 3) comfortable bed. Also, try to avoid check-in luggage, your trip will go more smoothly. If you are a smoker, the Marlboro's aren't too bad, but be aware, occasionally counterfeit packs are sold.

A tip of my hat to you Pea, it would be better to go to the Philippines without having a lady meet you at the airport. A lot of what the Philippines has to offer may never be experienced, it may surprise some that the best of the Filipinas available are not on the internet a lot of those girls are running a scam, some are legit but most are not. Half the fun of finding a new partner is the journey and if you don't belive that go home fringe.( edit for spelling) new edit, hey Pea, the most fun I ever had in the PI was getting lost on a jeepny. It was a blast. Most people can communicate in English and the people are so helpful. I found some of the nicest people and the best food I ate there. And as long as you don't get to far off the beaten path you are safe, as long as you don't act the fool.

One very important thing to be aware of is the mob of people who will immediately swarm you the moment you step out the secure area of the terminal into the lobby. They will try to take your bags if you let them because they want you to ride in their taxis. I strongly suggest you firmly hold onto your luggage and say no. There are plenty of legitimate taxis outside the terminal.
As for packing, i find it best to travel with no bags at all. You avoid the hassle of customs inspection and to be completely honest you can literally buy everything you will need during your stay in the open markets which are everywhere.
If you are going to be barhopping i strongly suggest you go with a friend whom you can trust so just in case there is any trouble you have a witness on your behalf and by all means stick together and use the buddy system.
    Great video Pea!

Agree accessing local WiFi for WhatsApp - free calls or Facebook Messenger; for leaving messages back home, but local sim card suggestion is great. If your phone has a feature where you can load 2 sim cards you may be well covered. Going online - you can book a local Uber driver through your downloaded App or use Grab. With Grab, passenger safety is paramount. Grab drivers must undergo stringent character checks, including clearance by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

another excellent video as usual Pea. It is fun watching them in RANDOM order lol. Here are a few of my tips...never been there but made lots of long distance friends (and gfs lol) over the past four years. don't even bring a phone (well not your apple pro 12... a cheap older one is fine)
(unless you have dozens of numbers to input) ... just bring the contact numbers or load them into a cloud u can access... buy a vivo or reasonably priced phone in the 8-12 K PHP range at the airport (i suggest Globe, based on my friends' input). prefer a DUAL simm. (i will explain why later). Yes load up the 1000 load. Personally I find handbags a pain. Perhaps before travelling find a wallet/belt that can hold your phone, passport, and wallet... this should be worn under the shirt (and ideally be waterproof for beaches). Also, don't even tell ANY gf that you are coming to visit. By the time you spend an hour there you may be overloaded with women anyway. Also, ALWAYS have ways to send extra funds to yourself, be it gcash, Western Union, Zoom, or whatever. Bank to Bank transfers (for the first time) can take several business days) ... assuming you have a Phillipine bank even. In another video Pea recommends a $10K USD emergency reserve back home.... totally agree with that.
now the reason to buy a phone is to GIVE it to the girl you want to stay in touch with as a parting gift. This is one of the most popular gifts (other than cash ) that women there appreciate. I did make a mistake though, i should have ordered a dozen lmao. The dual simm can be used by your lady to get a loader simm. (assuming she is not well off). Pinays can make a little money selling load to people with this. I guess most of the people I chat tend to be on the poorer side. Even educated people who have completed a nursing degree have to pass a final exam, and many cannot afford the cost of it. Be careful not to be their banker. If you genuinely want to help someone, offer to pay DIRECTLY to the educational institution. Right away you will find a million excuse why that is not possible... which is total bs.
Personally i don't mind a little erring on the generous side, as it is hard for many there, but outright scammers are to be avoided like the plague.
Last two comments: after EXTENSIVE use of date site (i will not name it as i don't want the headache) they are NOT WORTH IT. Use social media, or better yet... if you wish to meet a lady, it will be easier to do it in the Phillipines.
I wish all who seek true love and happiness, and remember do not abuse your relative position of wealth. We westerners simply won the lottery by being born in a land of opportunity.

Call your credit card companies and banks and let them know when you will be out of the home country, your email, and at which lodgings you can be contacted. It will keep your card from being rejected outright or have you standing around waiting for the approvals. Object lesson!! I was at the Marriott in Manila near the airport. Somehow someone got ahold of my AMEX information (probably a store clerk) and charged a $10,000 ticket(s) to Dubai. Thank goodness AMEX was able to reach me and ask if I really meant to go there. Ironically my Filipina gf, now wife, HAD been there and was impressed how quickly that information had gotten out and speculated who the facilitator was! She had also been a ticket agent for a Filipino airline, so again I was impressed by her breadth of knowledge on carriers and pricing.

I certainly don't agree with not bothering to learn Tagalog. Sure, outside Manila Tagalog is not "popular", but appearing to understand at least Tagalog, means that people are less likely to talk behind your back, and the level of respect increases because you have taken the trouble to go to the effort to try to communicate in the local language. Also, and probably more importantly, culture is embedded in language. Learning a language is invaluable in learning the culture.

Hi Ms Pea, great video. I use the ATM at the airport instead of the Currency Exchange house. I get the going International rate and the conversion fee is cheap.
Also, my International phone plan with T-Mobile (US) worked perfectly while in Cebu City and the Island of Bohol. It also worked great in Taiwan for that matter!
I used a tour guide when I visited and she helped out big time. I don't think it would have been as good if I had not used her services. The only thing I was disappointed with is that she arrived late to the airport to pick me up. I was ready to just move on without her (she was 35 minutes late). Can't complain too much because everything else worked out perfectly!!!

Great points. I first visited the Philippines in April 2005 landing in Cebu City (Mactan) when I had a girlfriend there. Been back several times but last year September I decided to spend time in metro Manila. Manila has a lot of history and really worth visiting. But if you want to relax then Cebu is ideal on a first trip.
Only last year I traveled in jeepneys. It's an experience worth doing. Only thing I had to buy one pair of shorts at Robinson's. One day climbing into the jeepney to go to UP at Diliman the shorts ripped. I had no choice but to laugh. Most of my suitcase I filled up with foodstuff to give to a couple friends so I had little clothes. It's a good thing my stop was in Quezon City otherwise carrying all that food the airline would really charge for overweight going to another city like Cebu.
The taxi scamming I solved when I decided to download the app for Grab. I bought a sim card then sat in the arrival area behind Globe and Smart and put in my credit card number and contacted Grab to come get me. I don't have Grab where I live so the app won't allow me to input my credit card number before leaving home. So that's my advice to anyone arriving in Manila. Download Grab app. Register an account. Then if you can't input your credit or debit card details do it at the airport after you buy a sim card. Be sure your phone is unlocked and can accept a sim card.

@@TheFilipinaPea regarding it's not necessary to learn the local language: I have to agree unless one lives there and stays in one area than it would be worthwhile learning some of the local language. When my girlfriend and I went to Palawan we needed some directions so she went over to a local man to ask him. She came back laughing. I asked her what's so funny? She said "that man could not understand me and I could not understand him." Yet she speaks Visayan and Tagalog, and of course English. We finally found a traffic agent who understood her. So that's another tip if you are out of main cities like Manila not everyone might understand English. But people dressed in uniform who work for the government will most likely understand Tagalog, and English.

A standard rule for international travel is to pack half as much as you think you need, and bring twice as much money as you were planning.
No mustard in the Philippines. If you need mustard to enjoy your meals then stock up on little packages from the fast food joints and take your own.
No long hair. Keep it as short as you can deal with. Makes grooming in a tropical country with undependable water/hot water much easier.
The "Rough Guide" travel series books has a great one on the Philippines. We use our digital version on our phone every trip in.
Grab is the PI version of Uber. Works well, but if you use your credit card your provider may not be quick to pay, which means that you can't use your credit card for subsequent rides.
Greenhills Mall in Manila is a must visit, but plan on spending almost the complete day there and probably half your budget (and you will still miss 50% of what they have available.)
T-Mobil is the best US plan to have while in the PI. You get unlimited text and data, and free WIFI calls to back home.
If you're over 5 foot 10 inches, plan on bumping your head on low hanging items at least once a day. Especially in local markets. Trust me on this.
Take a hat with a wide brim. Preferably one designed for hiking and warm weather.
Kultura in the Mall of Asia (Manila) is a great place to buy souvenirs to take back home, but it can be a little pricey.
Pack a big bottle of Pepto Bismol in the luggage and take a swig each morning and night from the moment you get there. It really does help minimize the changes of getting stomach problems (minimize, not guaranteed).
If you like to try differing alcoholic drinks then there are plenty you can bring back home... such as seaweed wine, cashew wine, mango rum, and other exotics. Nothing says friendship quite like giving someone back home the gift of a bottle of seaweed wine.
Massages are one of the real perks of being in the PI. You can get an hour massage for about $5 US dollars. Be sure to go to a real spa, though, and not one down in the bar area. And don't be a jerk and ask for a happy ending.

Its a Tropical Island so why bring more and there are no checked bags for the airlines to lose. Its an International flight so the bag could end up anywhere - lol. I try to stay at resorts or condos that I can reserve on airbnb. I find they have everything I need or want when compared to a Hotel and are a little cheaper or nicer plus easier to make the reservations online using my card. I learned no one takes plastic there and everyone wants cash. So I setup a seperate travel account here and I use my Debit Card in the ATM there to pull cash. Make sure its part of the Plus Network. Any Country that has Tourists visiting is going to have pick-pockets and other negative things, so a person must think and prepare a smart defense against these things, including the bars.
