Several years ago when we were on holidays in The Philippines, we visited relatives on Sunday. The church is on their property as their grandfather started a community for that denomination. We also sat thru the mass. The minister, as it was around Christmas, compared Joseph's role as father to Jesus who wasn't his biological son to today's world. "What stops you from following his footsteps?" he asked the community.
Something similar happened to a relative in the 60's. He met a woman that had a child from a irresponsible boyfriend. When his mother demanded the priest to advise her son not to marry this woman, the priest replied: "Why would I do such a thing? Can't you see that your son make now not only him and his future wife happy but a whole family? I'll pray for you so you may see what a good christian your son is."
Keeping in mind that it easier when the child is young and just rolls into the new family.
The trouble start in Western countries when:
      1. the child(ren) have to adapt to a new dad/mom every few months.
      2. the parent want the new partner to support the child(ren) but may not have any say in its/their behaviour.
      3. the absent bio-parent make the life of the step-parent a living hell.

Um it's not the same thing. Her dad married a widow, not a single mother aka baby momma. A widow is just as honorable even if she has kids from the previous husband as marrying a childless unmarried woman. Most men, at least the ones I know, would take little to no issue marrying a widow.

That was AMAZING coming from humble beginnings. Educated yourself, college degree and a self made woman that speaks fluent English and a heart of gold, ethics, values integrity?
I was just the opposite? Born into a wealthy family, BEAUTIFUL 3000 sf apartment with gold plated faucets. Has a Corvette in high school. We had a BEAUTIFUL lake cottage and Chris Craft boat and my own lil racer. I had it all....
But I have seen both sides, been homeless, bathed in gas stations and lived in my car?
Caught my wife cheating on me the whole time we were married, so I took out the trash, joined the Army who made a man out of me and a helicopter pilot and I changed my life 1000% for the better which has taken me to 1742 cities in 22 countries and living in my 9th country now in Panglao Bohol

Lenny, now if you can tell your story to all the guys out there in the same marital mess so they'll stop thinking it's the end of the world, that would be awesome. I knew a fine young man once who hung himself because his wife asked for a divorce. I just wished I could've spoken to him had I known. Glad you turned your life around😊

The real pride and love that you exude towards your stepfather and your mother and the real pride about your upbringing. You really gave us a better understanding of your culture, the soul of your people, and the richness of your society. The gift of the TV at the end of the segment so you can share your world with your parents was priceless. Thank you for a great lesson in humanities. Your country is very proud of you, I am sure. @@TheFilipinaPea The average American ESPECIALLY needs to see this. This is the status quo for probably 80% of Filipinos -- one could argue that it's sub-middle-class. Meanwhile Americans are clutching their pearls insisting that they could never live like that and the word "humble" isn't in their lexicon. Shit, America has some of the richest poor on the planet, and yet they all still think America stinks. They wouldn't last one weekend in the province.
What it taught me after travelling the world and marrying a Filipina is that love and love of family is universal, and is not conditioned on wealth. Obviously if given a choice we'd all like to aspire to something better; who wouldn't? But what good would it be without love and love of family? Pretty damned empty. I'm glad you opened up so that viewers understand that you're real, genuine, that nothing was handed to you, and you have a firm grasp on the big picture. You're rich beyond measure, and your parents must be proud as hell. They should be.

@@TheFilipinaPea You've helped me conjure up some blessed memories from when I first dated and married my asawa. Their (our) barangay is on Luzon between Clark and Lingayen Gulf, in the flatlands, and it was equally humble and austere back in the late 70s -- farming and fishing were the only real industries out there and only produced a sustenance living for those large families there, including my wife's. In our little barrio all they had for transportation were kalesas and "skates" (the little railroad platform cars that the driver would manually push with his legs along the railroad tracks). And still, people were happy and content.
I can tell just by your stoic parents that you were a firecracker growing up, but a girl who wouldn't settle and wouldn't be denied the opportunity to make her life better and more prosperous. Just listening to you shows that all those medals you earned in school were EARNED -- not "participation trophies" like we in the U.S. are wont to give out. In a lot of ways you remind me of my late wife and you have my admiration and my prayers for great success from your project here. Send all my best to your tatang and inang (We're Ilocano; don't know your dialect so I don't know what you call your mom & pop).
