    Great review Matt. Your take on the gap between EVs and the charging infrastructure is spot on. The Government needs to realise this is why the uptake is so slow on EVs not set targets for the manufacturers..

    Thanks Matt
    I agree with pretty much everything. I have owned one, in the UK, for eleven months, and I am very happy with it. It's great to have silent luxury when you want it. And then the power of a small rocket when needed. It's been 100% reliable in that time. Yes, it's range is not the best, but that does not bother me at all. I am lucky to have a home charger, and have only used public chargers a few times in nearly a year. I can charge from 20% to 80% overnight for about £4. That will last me a week.
    There are things that annoy me. The unnecessary bongs when you turn on, for example. And the warning noise for pedestrians at low speed is very audible in the cabin.
    One thing you did not mention was that there is a five-year warranty and also free servicing for 5 years. They also collect and return your car for you. It also has a UK three-pin mains socket. Very useful when our for a picnic or camping.
    All in all, a great place to be when travelling.

      I hired a Polestar for three weeks over summer to go around the Cotswalds and south-west England. I was expecting a disaster but it was actually fine. There are many caveats to that, mostly that I was on holidays and could afford the time, but I was surprised because, as you say, I found the rest of the country has turned into a basket case. Mind you, if I didn't have the ability to charge at home, I wouldn't even consider an EV.

    • @davidperry3531

      It’s obvious that the UK is just not ready for EVs for most car owners so it’s no wonder the date for ban of sale of ICs has blown out by 5 years. Even then, there are so many other factors that come into play during the next few years, the major one being affordability to purchase and the huge depreciation factor and of course the ease (or difficulty ) of charging and of course the range. If I was living in the UK, I would be buying an economical IC car now not an EV.

    I completely agree with the charging ordeal. Last year I went with my dad to Israel and we swapped homes and cars with these people, I’m from the Netherlands btw. They had a electric Volvo xc40 which was a nice car to use, but when we wanted to make a far trip which required charging we ran in to problems, first we had to download an app (with expensive data) then it was in Hebrew without and option for English. And we weren’t allow to register because we’re Dutch. Then we went to the next one and it didn’t allow a Dutch phone number on their stupid app. We went inside the gas station to ask if we can pay by card and it was impossible. I have no idea why it works like this, just imagine you go to Shell and the force you to use an app, it’s insane.

    It's a lovely car, we've had one in for a review for about 2 weeks. The beeping is highly annoying, the suspension is too firm for their luxury approach - but other than that, probably one of the best midsize-SUV-EV's out there..

    • @pomerau
      @pomerau 11 месяцев назад

      Curious ... which beeping sounds? (I haven't been in one)
      Parking / door opening / seat belt / fart alerter (one day ... !)
      Also interested in the ride. Is it on the same EV design wheels? and I presume there is no suspension settings option, whicjh I'll look in to.
      A Chinese gent I drive for will be looking at an SUV for school runs etc as a second car, but is hooked on a British brand so more likely a Range Rover.
      (I don't know what the Chinese attitude is to Korean brands!)
      I like the genesis models I've seen, and spoke to a salesman once in a Westfield SC store.

    • @onemorelap
      @onemorelap 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@pomerau There is a Korean-style 8-bit bell-kinda welcome-tune (you can turn that off), but the driver alerts, trunk operations and many more things beep at you. It's a high pitch beep, so I thought it was annoying. I would have loved to see an air-suspension like in the e-tron - but that's the weak-point for me in the Genesis lineup currently, GV80 and GV70 are too firm and riding "too cheap", like going over potholes and so on, for what the rest of the car is / wants to be. I drove it on Swiss back roads, which are comparable to your b-roads.

    • @pomerau
      @pomerau 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@onemorelap Thanks. I know what you mean now.
      I would hope they could dial that out, or have silenced most of them for the UK. I don't know. Kinda takes away from the prestige image. "You own our expensive car but it looks like you're an idiot so we'll keep reminding you and when you learn we'll keep reminding you anyway".
      I drove a standard 3.0 Cayenne for a family on mostly school runs over 3 years from 2018. They / she involved me in configuring it. Smallest wheel size 19" but better alloy design, but they decided against PASM and regretted it.
      It could really rock diagonally over poor surfaces at town speeds however hard I tried to steer and balance it.
      Sorry for the meandering autobiography!
      I'm glad you are mostly enjoying the GV70, and hope that it's just a bit bumpy and hard in a straight line but you can put up with it.
      I hope they listen to feedback for the next generation, though at your expense.
      Both the standard Porsche and also the Jaguar I-Pace were terrible at rocking you and your passengers around at low speeds.

      I own an i3 and I concur the infrastructure is appalling, my i3 meets my local needs but panning a longer journey is stressful due to, charging points listed as available to find they are not or only the trickle charge is available, then there are the - you need to download an app, enter all credentials (hugely time consuming) and no guarantee the account will activate (first hand experience). I charge my i3 at home over night, very inexpensive via the 3 pin plug, and I own a (W209) 2005 CLK for longer journeys or emergency use. Considering the number of EV’s on the road and the government are pushing for more car drivers to switch, the country is not prepared now, it’s already behind.

    Your rant at the end said it all Matt. It's time that there was a roll-out of charging machines at fuel stations and elsewhere where you simply plug in, then pay (by card at the machine or at the same pay desk as everyone else). That'll immediately remove one of the biggest concerns of many of us older, less IT savvy motorists about the switch to electric. Perhaps it should become a legal requirement that all electric cars and car charging points should work this way........

    • @gw4182

    An excellent looking vehicle, glad you’ve run it for a few weeks before giving a review, too many ‘reviews’ are from driving for an hour or two. The only bad bit being the range at 230 its not practical for tripping especially as Genesis don’t have their own charging network, pity. I imagine they will eventually produce the same car with a 400 to 500 mile range, its only a matter of time as things settle down in the electric car market. Having had EV’s since 2014 we settled for our ‘retirement’ car last year, yes its a Tesla the only folk who include charging in their car package !

    Totally agree with your views on EVs Matt in fact from a couple of years back when everyone was focusing on "Range Anxiety", my view was that really wasn't the main problem, it was the time it takes to recharge them. As to why this is the "real problem" is because most people who live in cities won't have the chance of overnight charging at home because they live in flats etc so the amount of public charging points becomes: number of vehicles x charging time equals y thousand charging points per 10,000 cars and that just won't happen :)

    Evening Matt - Genesis is very popular here in Qatar and both this and the larger GV80 are quite common among those 'in the know' - the larger GV80 is extremely popular. Not available as an EV but at the equivalent of 45p a litre for petrol, EVs are yet to be widely seen, although the charging infrastructure is growing now. Interestingly, it is the luxury EV (Audi eTron, Porsche Taycan, etc) that is mostly seen and these are bought by the wealthy who already have the Land Cruiser, Silverado/Sierra, Porsche and Ferrari tucked up in the garage and are viewed as another toy to own and be seen in. And with Qatar only being 200km north to south and 100km east to west, there is never much need to be concerned about range anxiety - and if you do want to travel the length or breadth of the place (and most do not) then take the Land Cruiser. Excellent vehicles these - great video and nice to see a review that is not focussed on badge snobbery.

    I'm a fully paid up petrol head and proud of it. I love the automobile have done since I was 10. Now, old age ( I'M 75 at Christmas) and getting into my E class coupe is frankly comical add to this my beloved struggles to push the door open far enough to get out! So my choice of a 500SL as my last car is out of the question. My motoring needs as opposed to want says small SUV, my usage ie 40 miles per week average an electric car is my best option.

    Great review and totally agree with your take on the ownership experience / infrastructure - it currently ruins what are becoming really good cars - I have tried running three separate EV’s (E-Tron / Q4 E-Tron & ipace) great cars in themselves but the experience is ruined by being full of range anxiety and stress to charge up…. sadly the equation just does not work so not for me 😊

    I get range anxiety if my laptop goes below 50% - God knows how I would feel in an EV ! The odd occasion I come across someone with a house to sell that has a home charger I mention in the property details but that is only once or twice a year. Don't understand why there can't be a uniform charging system. After all one round peg fits the same size hole in all petrol stations in the world!

    I think you put across a really balanced point of view, my experience of ev's is really good. they're more reliable relaxing and actually really fun to drive! The biggest problem is the complete lack of charging infrastructure and as you say standardization. But if that got sorted i feel like it could be a really exciting future!

    Great Review Matt! I was in Edinbroough on Tuesday, and I was blown away when I saw the Genesis in the car park - they had a test drive part corerend off, and my jaw dropped and the interior was that good! Even the quirky nature sounds (okay some are questionable), but they thought of everything and a cracking interior!!! I'm seriously thinking about it as my next car - I agree on EV's, as much as I want to go EV's! I feel like we're in a HD-DVD vs BluRay moment right now - what about Hydrogen cars? That surely is the next logical step.....Philiosphical I know but I could definitely go for a beer and talk about that!

    I was told that the GV70 has all around cameras which are fine for situational awareness but are useless for security because they don’t record, as the Teslas do. Is that correct? If so, it is quite an oversight by Genesis if the car has the cameras anyway, especially at this price. It is a very valuable and practical facility to have and not a gimmick.

    Most EV owners are evangelical to the point of being deranged. They have to try and justify what is turning out to be a terrible buying decision - worse for the environment, more expensive, horrific depreciation, short life span ,limited range and more expensive to charge than petrol if using public chargers .

    • @Brian-om2hh
      @Brian-om2hh 11 месяцев назад +1

      My public charging costs me 38p per kwh using my subscription. That still works out at around a 3rd of the cost of using petrol. Charging at home is cheaper still, at around a 10th of the cost of using petrol.

    The charging infrastructure really is the elephant in the room. Not just availability but we need standardised plugs (if you have a Nissan Leaf you have Chademo and, increasingly fewer and fewer cars use this). Also the App nonsense needs dealing with - there is, quite literally no excuse for it. Having said all that I am one of those who could live quite happily with an EV (off road parking, low mileage) but there are plenty who can't. Looks like a fabulous car though.

    I note that the prime minister has today stated that the ban on existing ICE vehicle’s manufacturing has been extended from 2030 until 2035 in line with the rest of Europe. This act acknowledges that our infrastructure isn’t ready for EVs in the UK. I also predict that Kia Hyundais market share will eclipse the German manufacturers within 20 years. Nice to see that at 07:31 the boot cover appears to be the same as my 2017 Sportage too!

    Genesis are a top drawer product Matt. Well designed and engineered. Hyundai are a huge industrial concern. Shipbuilding, civil engineering and car manufacturing. The South Korean EV's are among the most efficient around.... Why buy an Audi eTron, or Jaguar iPace? A Bentley (almost?) for less than half the cost? BP do indeed do 350kw charging Matt, as do Gridserve, who are building a network of 100 charging hubs on all of Britain's main road routes. Matt, if you use public charging regularly, you can subscribe to the network and save a bit of money on the cost. My local charge network charges 38p per kwh with a subscription. That's not much more than the daytime rate at home. Of course the off-peak nighttime rate is much less, at 7.5p per kwh, if you go with a decent tariff.

  • @alantheskinhead

    What you said is exactly what I have been saying for months, even with my local MP and councillors in north London. I would of have gone fully electric but, like many people in London we live in a flat with no parking other than the road. The nearest charging point is on a lamppost that is often blocked by non electric or plug-in/PHEV's. The next major charging station is a BP garage this often full with other EV's, then it's a Shell garage in Highgate which is a tube journey away.
    EV's are fine if you own a drive and now have deep pockets as electric is not that cheap, more so at the EV station. Add to this the fact the EV makers basically "lie" about the range. London is packed of EV's from private cars, minicabs, taxis and now even our local DPD vans are EV's. If I go to my other place in Leicester and drive around you'll be lucky to see one or two and they are treated as a curiosity. Where I am in London there are twelve EV's outside my door alone. Then there is the new problem of "Charger Rage"! Forget range anxiety, the new thing around here is Charger Rage where like the other day I saw a Porche driver come to blows with a Ioniq driver over a charger. Then there is the theft of the cables, which is a surprise as for anyone who has cut through their lawnmower cable will know.. blue flash and a bang. Add to this the local gangsters have twigged that you nick the electric by bypassing the QR reader thing and tapping on the cables at pavement level! Add to this there are faulty, damaged chargers Then an APP for this, that, other, bla-bla-bla, and lack of standardisation of chargers, no wonder EV sales have stalled. Not to mention the rubbish resale losses! I am now out of breath.... !
    This was the main reason I bought a self charging hybrid, it's the best of both worlds. I get better ICE milage and I don't need a plug, drive or charger. Alas the government has not thought all this EV thing out one bit, the infrastructure is simply not here yet. I bet there are not as many flats in Romily than there are around here Crouch End/Muswell Hill? I can see the population of a large town from my lounge window. In fact the only person I know with a drive in London is my 90 year old mother who can't drive anymore after 50 years of doing so. We have to remember the UK basically runs on a power grid that is antiquated and runs at near 97% of capacity. My late father who was a heavy electrical engineer and industrialist who made power grids for countries after the war always said the old adage "electric does not grow on trees", yet people think this. EV's are plugged into something no matter if it's nuclear to a wind turbine in Scotland or a extension cable from France! There is only so much you can generate, electricity is only available as it's in effect man made. EV's are not the way forward, there was the old Water/Petrol engine that was buried and the inventor then vanished! Hydrogen is good but you turn your car into the Enola Gay!
    My confession is that after years of procrastination I took the plunge and bought a new Dacia Jogger Hybrid (Yes, I hear the giggles across RUclips). But the test drive showed me that the car did in fact run 75% of the time on batteries and I got 68mpg. I have no interest in cars par-se but I do like to keep up to date with things. I have owned everything from a Roller to countless Dyanes, but the older you get, the less you want.....and that want includes easiness!

    I was behind one of these coming back from work the other day: comes in under the radar, not too ostentatious from the outside and round my way it’d be way less likely to get nicked than something like a Range or Bentayga! You’d think if the continent can get everyone using USB-C for mobile devices they’d be able to get some charging standards in place for cars (unless you have/can use the Tesla network which is still a distant 1st for mile munchers) but early days still hence the delay on the petrol/diesel ban in the news today.

    Imagine if they did that with petrol stations?
