Easily your most complex main character I've encountered to date. I have no idea if he is ultimately evil or good. There's zero black and white thinking in his actions. While people tend to cling to black and white, it's simply not reality and Auto is an excellent example of that understanding. Your skill at writing is a direct reflection of Auto's own rapid progress from abused boy to master wizard. You never fail to impress me with each story. I had thought children of the void was your best work and said as much. I was so very wrong and I'm happy to be so.
keep doing what you do my friend. It is making a lot of people's lives much less boring and expanding perspectives.
    Bravo!!!👏👏👏👏

Otto is ambitious and amoral. Likely due to his horrible childhood, in which he was humiliated and beaten and told he would amount to nothing by all the male members of his family, especially his even more amoral father. He does seem to care about the poor, and children, and of course those with magic powers. He is an anti-hero, and I am curious to see if his ambition will push him to be more villainous over time.

Dear James, holy crap! What started out "a bit sinister" in book one developed into something really nasty (which means, great story) and I am absolutely hooked. Trying to avoid spoilers for anyone who reads this, I can only use hints: once the guard loyal to the old king found out the truth, I admit it staggered me. I was not sure whether to keep supporting the new king and his advisor or the guard, purely for moral reasons. That thought has been lingering in the memory ever since. Very interesting :) And now I'm going to start with book three, can't wait :) Excellent story arc so far, great developments, and very entertaining. Thank you so much for sharing and all the best to you.

@@JamesEWisherbooks it also always puts a smile on my face reading your replies - I thoroughly enjoy this interaction. When I was a kid, before the internet was known to the public, I thought how wonderful it would be to read books by authors still living (as opposed to, say, Shakespeare and the likes) and once I actually got my hands on books by living authors, I thought how wonderful it would be to let them know my appreciation. And now you are actually the first author whose books I've been enjoying who even responds to me. Heaven :) I'm not far from completing the third book and I will let you know what I think. Until then, take good care of yourself, all the best and have a wonderful day.

Kelton reminds me of a Paladin from Dungeons and Dragons. That is to say, he embodies the "lawful stupid" paradigm. He sees someone has done an injustice and demands punishment even if it would doom the entire kingdom around him. Perhaps he would pat himself on the back even as enemy forces were marching on the capital and nobles the kingdom over were in the process of cutting deals of betrayal in order to save their own hides.

EDIT also as a side note it’s a nice change having Otto not being the classic infallible main character… it’s nice seeing he’s not perfect as it makes him seem like a real person.

Really appreciate you making these available for us! It's an epic series. Can't wait to move on to book 3! This might annoy you a little, knowing how long it takes to actually write a book, but I've listened to the first 2 in 2 days, haha.
As for this book, my only complaint would be that through the whole of it I didn't really feel the immersion. It felt a little like you're a plotter and that you're working towards hitting those plot points and that makes some of the scenes feel a little flat. In short I didn't *feel* much. There wasn't much tension, except a certain point with regards to a certain closet, it didn't feel like anyone was ever in real danger.
Other than that you are an excellent writer, sir, and I look forward to more!
