This wasn’t the issue I’m having with my mower, but I’ll be damned I learned a LOT with this video alone. I greatly appreciate how in depth you went into troubleshooting
Your procedure solved my problem. I couldn't solve the surging and dying problem when trying to adjust my new carb. By checking the fuel flow back to the fuel tank like you showed I found the orifice on the bottom of the fuel tank was blocked and only allowing gas to trickle out, once I blew it out I was able to get the carb adjusted quickly and easily. Others had posted that surging is always the carburetor, they were wrong.
Thanks, we tried cleaning our carb and replacing it about 3 times trying to figure this out. We figured if the line was clogged it would never turn on to begin with, but we had these exact same symptoms. This video got us to look upstream of the fuel filter, and sure enough, clogged fuel line. Saved us a lot more time and money!
Thank you for showing how to fix the surging stalling problem my mower still does this and I changed the complete fuel line I will check the fitting at the bottom of the gas tank I have had the tank out three times!
Thank you sir: I have rebuilt the carburetor got a new one then I watched your video and went back to the old carburetor and changed all my lines working properly
@@RaleysSmallEngines THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! SUCCESS thanks to you!!! It's embarrassing that my clues were when I realized the trickle that I have had for so long was NOT supposed to trickle AND when I saw I could remove the tank's elbow without starting a leak. Thanks again!!!!
Thank you , I never would have known about the rubber on the solenoid blocking fuel flow. I am going to replace the fuel line anyway now that the tank is drained. It couldn't hurt.
Thank you I just watched another video took the whole carb down cleaned up and had some gunk but didn’t fixed the surge. Now I’m going to try the fuel line.
Great video alot of great information you provided and expert troubleshooting as well, now I have to dig into my Ariens 17.5 and fix surging issues. Thank You Sir!!
I have a similar Airens with the 22HP V Twin engine and looking for a video on adjusting the carburetor and came across this one. Did not answer my questions but I enjoyed it still. Well done sir.
Great video. My mower has been sitting and now won't run, but will with starting fluid. Gonna change the fuel filter and check the lines when I get home
Just found your channel great information, It's spring just changed the oil filter checked the plug changed the air filter, now I ordered one of those fuel filters from your video. Every year I start the mowing season lawnmower stays on a battery tender when not in use. The tips you gave are very helpful and just wanted to say thank you.
Just subscribed after watching a few of your videos. I like the thoroughness of your service and your explanations. If it were my machine, I would have added a fuel valve for running the carb dry at end of season.
Be alert that the valve can clog as well. I had a partial clog in my valve. Came on here to see if there was anything else. I had gas still flowing without the valve, but still kept shutting down after 3 or 4 minutes of running. So I guess my tank or my fuel line is like this one.
Have you ran into the camshaft compression release breaking off yet? My 17.5 broke on mine early this year. Briggs and Stratton Amazon store's reviews had bad reviews of late about the new ones were breaking within 3 months of replacement. I took the bottom off of my engine and cleaned all the free parts out of it and put it back together. It's a 2017 model so the oil seal on the bottom was still good. I can crank it ok now, just removing the filter and covering it with my hand. I don't have any bad vibrations from the compression release not being on there. So I hope she'll make it. I also found that my shut off valve was clogged yesterday; but not entirely my engine's shut off problem. Like yours, it is taking about 3 to 15 minutes to start acting up. Thanks for the information you gave here. I think you have found my problem. Even though it is a Troy Bilt, the Briggs engine is acting much the same as yours.
Excellent presentation of not only the repair itself but of your systematic troubleshooting skills. A really nice simple repair that I’m sure many would have missed. I’ve been doing large and small engine repairs for 50 years and I’ve never come across this problem. I wonder if it’s the quality of the rubber that’s being made these days. None the less, I have subscribed to your channel…I’m looking forward to watching other videos that you have made. Thanks for the education! You did a very nice job.
Thanks for the nice complement my friend. Thank you for subscribing also. We are trying to do better videos as we go forward with our channel. We just want to help people save money and teach a trade. Thanks for your support.
Like your diagnosis process. I’ve got a Briggs v twin. It’s been stumbling and backfire occasionally. I changed plugs and fuel filter over the weekend. Mowed for three hours and it ran pretty good. Now tonight started acting squirrelly. Surging a bit and then die. Would start back up. Acted like it was out of gas but without out that run a bit faster just before dying. Even so I opened the gas tank thinking it’d run dry but there was still maybe 1/4 tank. I’m convinced it is simple. Managed to limp up the hill 1/10 mile back to my shop. Let it cool off and restarted it and it ran good for a couple minutes then just started sounding funny again. After watching you, I’m wondering if it’s fuel line or debris in the tank. As I’m writing it did seem to run fine when tank was full. Hmmm. Subscribed btw.
Thanks for a Great Video. Simple explainations for someone like me learning, so I can do it myself. I'd love to see a video with this problem going toward the carberator
My 13 year old 22hp v-twin was dying out and hard to start. It has a fuel pump that was pulsing fuel. I thought it was good but it wasn't pumping enough fuel. Bought a new fuel pump starts and runs great again.
You need to use that brake cleaner to check for vacuum leaks is what was needed. We all know the fuel tank is partially plugged, fuel line is deteriorating internally causing running issues and the carb it filthy. Clean the tank out. Install new fuel line and shut off valve. Just watched the vid. At 7:30 he found this issue.
@@RaleysSmallEngines Just subscribed to your site the other day ,I own the same Ariens tractor. I’m the one who had the tank elbow fuel line block. Steve A . Thanks Again !
First time watcher, love your video, very helpful and informative. I definitely subscribed to your channel, now I'm off to binge watch all your others.
I bought a rider with the same engine. The guy I bought it from said it would only run for 10 minutes and quit. Sears had serviced it for him twice changing fuel line and filter, then the carb. I tried it and, sure enough, 10 minutes and die. I noticed that the fuel line was so long that it dipped down almost to the frame. I shortened it up considerably and have never had a problem since.
I was wondering about the droop myself. My line is long enough the filter leaves an air pocket in the top corner of it. I might have to take that into consideration when I reline my tank to my carb as well... Also found out my shut off valve was clogged yesterday. But didn't totally fix my issue. Here's to new fuel line!
Exactly what was wrong with mine today replaced the fuel line and filter .. thank you !! Also had an issue with the blades not spinning fast enough, ended up being a loose pulley , sat out side over the winter so it needed maintenance awesome video 👍
I had a similar problem with a Briggs, the coil turned out to be bad, I used the same procedure to find the bad coil. Run good for a few minutes then die, wait 5 minutes would restart then die again, watching the for spark, and sure enough lost spark.

Hey brother great video just subscribed. So I got a free Husqvarna rider 20hp single cylinder kohler doing the same thing almost, except all the time. It’s been sitting for like 4-5yrs but its in really good shape. It was dumping fuel out the bowl so it’s got a new carb fresh gas, new plug, got spark and starts and runs fine everytime…..only runs bad above 1/4 throttle, like with the air cleaner lid off and you try and give it more gas it starts breaking up and blowing fuel back out the carb…..like choking itself out. I’ve even took it off the fuel tank and ran it on another tank milk jug with fresh fuel also just as a separate fuel source and same thing. I checked all the linkages for the choke flap and throttle and all seems fine. Any ideas? It did the same exact thing with the old carb on it also besides it dumping fuel out the bowl and I was confident the carb wud fix it but nope. After seeing this video it confirms to me I need to prolly break out the speak tester also and see if maybe the coil is breaking up when I try and go above 1/4 throttle like maybe the flywheels rust isn’t letting it make the spark like it should as she spins faster and thus not burning the fuel and it splashing back out the carbs intake
Exactly what is happening w mower - - question I have is there is a hole in carburetor area which may regulate air - does it need to be closed ? Seems to stop surging ? Taft
I have that exact same Ariens mower. It runs well and then out of no where I get that same spark in the exhaust. And then slowly more and more white smoke. My gas line is fine.
