I had a major in the Army who singlehandedly (and for no good reason) denied me a career as a helicopter pilot. I can't remember her name. It was a doctor who accused me of not disclosing information (not true) and wouldn't sign my medical packet to send to Ft. Rucker. And that was only maybe 5 years ago. I remember, as a boy, watching Sea Hunt starring Lloyd Bridges and reading about Jacques Cousteau and being enthralled with SCUBA diving. I quit school in my junior year in 1971 as a troubled 17 year old to join the Navy and become a frogman. After some mighty arguments with my Dad, he finally relented and agreed to sign for me to join the Navy. I went to talk to the Navy recruiter only to be told I needed a high school diploma to go into UDT. I went back to school, after having to apologize to my high school guidance counselor, and several others (lol). On 31 May 1972 I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on the delayed entry program and on 3 October 1972 found myself on Paris Island SC. I spent 20 years in Marine Aviation and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant in 1992. Proud of my service and never felt the need to embellish it. I did learn to SCUBA dive while stationed at KMCAS Kaneohe Bay Hawaii though. Was stationed on several Naval Air Stations and aboard a couple of aircraft carriers (Kennedy and America) while the squadron did carrier “quals”. Liked the sailors I was stationed with, by and large. Anyway, you never know how life is going to go. Keep up the good work Don!

    "Hello?"
    "Calvin....Don Shipley!"
I stood my skinny ass up so fast you would think George S Patton had called my name from beyond the grave. I'm nervous now, wondering what in the hell can of worms have I opened up that I'm getting a call from Don Shipley himself. Keep in mind, the website says they'll email you back. Not to mention I'm thinking, "how the hell did he get my number from a PayPal payment" (I never use PP) lol. Nope...he was just taking time out of his day to call me and tell me his findings and explain to me why SWCC guys like to claim they are SEALs, and how they're good at convincing people with it. I enjoyed the chat, but when you hear that voice on the other end...you can't help but get nervous lol.

My dad retired from the Navy in the very early 70’s. He started his career as a cook and then eventually changed rates, after a bunch of schools, to become a radioman. He was in Vietnam (1967-68) during Operation Market Time while serving on a Destroyer Escort Radar (USS Finch DER-328). Market Time was quite an operation when you research it. The “brown water Navy” has some of its roots from Market Time. He retired in 1971 if I remember correctly. Passed away 6 1/2 years ago. He also served in Korea.
My brother enlisted in the USMC just before dad retired. My sister married a sailor who went on to be an LDO and retired as a LtCdr. 3 of my 4 children are in or have served in the US Navy. My son-in-law is now a Chief.
Me? I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1976 and only served during the Cold War. Peace time. I make the cut as a Vietnam era veteran, but not a veteran of the actual war. All I have to show for my time is a DD-214 and a few pictures. The VA is serving my health care needs though.

I suck at math really bad, I have about a 7th grade math education and I had to quit school because I needed to work to help my parent get by because my dad broke his back. So when I turned 17 I joined the Army so I could send even more money to my parents and the Military was always good to me and I received the rest of my education during my service and them some. I soaked up every class and training school I could go to. I served 20 yrs and I’m proud of everything I have done and would do it again. I was company Training NCO as a young SGT and I had a really hard time sending emails and info back to my CO and 1SG and over people higher up and my 1SG called me into his office one day and sat me down in the chair in his office and he said to me SGT H you suck at writing professional. He spent a lot of time helping me with this problem, he asked me if I dropped out of school and I told he my story and boy after that he sent me to college writing courses. But any ways because his son ended up being my daughters BF lol him and I became really good friends and he was a great Mentor. This part of the training actually entails quite a bit of Algebra/Math and the physics of gases, i.e., Boyle's Law, to make the necessary calculations and APPLY them. A Diver/SEAL's life and the lives of his buddies actually depend on one's ability to quickly think on his feet and make these calculations. A fellow would have to at least have a good grasp of ratios/proportions and how to apply the math to the physical characteristics of gases at different temperatures and pressures, etc. Certainly, it doesn't require a degree in mathematics, but one will have to remember his high school physics/Boyle's Law and how to practically apply this information. Most guys don't take High School Physics. Many do not take Algebra in High School and only take a general math course. Therefore, the equivalent would be an introductory college-level physics class and refreshers in college math. Even for those who are able to understand the math and the physics, many will have difficulty with the practical application which is where it is going to count...Furthermore, a SEAL/Diver needs to be able to do this on the fly. Even if he can't do the math in his head down to the minute or PSI, he has to be able to calculate this stuff rapidly and accurately.
I would point out that Don is also very correct about how the service branches will expend the resources necessary to get a good or great candidate through these courses. While there are some areas that the military will be very strict and you must make the cut or you are OUT, for those service members who present well and your commanders within your chain of command are confident that a particular service member is worth the investment, resources are found to help a good candidate get through and learn the required information.
I was by no means a SEAL or anything close. However, I left active duty related to the death of my wife and being left with 3 small children each just turning 2, 3, and 4. The commanders within my chain of command believed me to be an officer with the right makings for advancement. I was promised what is referred to "fast track to colonel," if I would remain on active duty. In the end, I did not think it was fair to my kids as my next PCS assignment was to be Iraklion, Greece. [Often, the required overseas PCS assignments may be front-loaded early on so that as one advances through the ranks, he can be watched by the chain of command here at home state-side.] I left active duty and remained in the reserves for some years. As Don said, the various branches will try to keep the best.

While in basics we had a guy from our flight go try to get into pararescue. We thought it was incredible that he would want to try. He made it all the way to the end but failed a final swim test and was not allowed into pararescue. When he came back to the flight, we all cheered him for his effort, respected him for going through all of that with no reward at the end, except knowing he'd given his best to something very difficult. He had so much respect for the guys that made it through and were in pararescue, that he would never think to disrespect them by claiming he was one of them. He went on to have a great career in the service.
