  • The rulebooks say one thing and the meet directors decide another....this discrepancy does not make sense! Lets change the rulebooks to be the same at every level so that javelin throwers always have the option to wear 12mm spikes.

thank you for being the sole voice of reason on this issue. You are correct: shorter spikes rip up mondo tracks faster than spikes that hold plant. In this year’s college meets in which i competed, each one has dictated and checked for 1/4” spikes, despite rainy conditions. keep up the good fighr

Props to you, Christian, for addressing this issue! Your thoughts regarding Vetter's block slippage at the recent Olympic games? I assume that he was wearing long spikes.

I would assume he was too! The challenge there is that he runs so fast and the surface used at the Olympics was developed with runners in mind so it’s extremely good at handling vertical forces and not so good at the javelin. He also might have a longer back foot to front foot separation which combined with his speed was too much for the runway to handle. Great question!
I would love to see surface manufacturers make a special type of surface for HJ and Javelin and use it on the takeoff area and the last few meters of runway

btw, this will surprise many, but the best surface i have thrown from is Astroturf. It not only is more cushioned, but is fast, holds the plant everytime, and NEVER seems to wear out. My training partner and i have thrown off such a surface for more than a decade and no one would know. Even the maintenance staff mentioned that they can’t tell where we throw from. I wonder if it would work for high jumpers

Two weeks ago, my best high school senior thrower experienced his first ever 'block step spike failure'. His left foot, after initial planting, slid a good 12 inches before the spiked shoe stopped. I learned that he hadn't changed his javelin spikes from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch! The upcoming District Qualifier and Regional Qualifier Meets are on grass, but the State Meet will on a synthetic runway. Question: In high school and college, are 3/8 inch spikes allowed on a synthetic runway or is 1/4 inch required? (I am enjoying your RUclips Channel very much!)

It just depends on the meet. The rules are setup so the host of the meet can decide with the limit being 3/8 for high jump or javelin when the competition is on a track surface

My state lets jacelin throwers and high jumpers use the 3/8 inch spikes instead of 1/4 inch spikes

At ANY MEET. it's not allowed for coaches to limit the high jump or javelin spikes
