Do you think that this hints at lego consistently remaking classic sets?
I felt with the pirates of barracuda bay and the lion knights castle that they were one-offs.
The blacktron cruiser that came out felt like the space equivalent of the forest hide out gift with purchase.
But this is a large set to complement the barracuda bay, so maybe these themes are making a bit of a comeback?
Furthermore it uses a very similar modular system to the black falcon castle, so maybe there is a long term plan to this

I can see why not having the molded baseplate would be a strike against the aet in your opinion, but I'll point out that being forced to build it instead means you've got more room for the hidden festures, as well as more bricks to be used for other stone structures when the set gets taken apart. Funny you mentioned LEGO jail cells always have an escape route; one of my favorite LEGO sets was a wild west 'bank heist' set. I distinctly remember a technic shock absorber being used to knock down the wall of the jail cell when a dynamite 'brick' was inserted just right.
As a child, i thought that was just the coolest thing ever. No doubt this set would be incredible to play with.

The molded base plates were nice back in the day but even as a kid I wished a little that they were brick built. But that's mainly because the sets contained SO few parts.

    • @IzunaSlap
      @IzunaSlap Год назад +73

Baseplates are nostalgic, but tend to warp, bend, discolor or crack over time if not cared for very well. You have to be gentle with them and store them well. And honestly, its more satisfying to build the terrain yourself.

I feel like Lego is going in the direction of making everything out of system bricks, and that's pretty amazing for its simplicity and the amount of detail you can get. I would take a bunch of grey bricks that I can potentially use in other builds, rather than a baseplate that only has one purpose.

If there were raised baseplates there would be no room to place figures. That not only takes away playability, but also would drive this sets price way up. Instead of spending 200 you would probably be spending close to 300. Just my opinion, but I think building the rocks was kinda fun.

I still have my El Dorado fortress from back in the day. Loved the pirate line. I do prefer the block terrain versus the molded foundation. Plus all the extra bits and accessories is awesome. The benefit of the block base leads to all the cool tunnels and escape routes not available in the original molded foundation. It’s actually brilliant and a sign that the designers are old school legoheads like myself.

As an older person, Ive been buying legos since before minifigs had arms or faces. My age gives me some perspective on the evolution of Lego. Legos today are no longer throw away toys for kids but collectible models for adults typically targeted at those who grew up in the 90s. Sets were available for years instead of discontinuing sets quickly to promote collectability. The baseplates were great for a kids toy providing stability and imagination. No kid wants to spend hours building rocks instead of a fortress. I also have the thought that Lego has been justifying it's insane pricing by unnecessarily boosting it's part count. As an adult model it makes sense but I've never agreed with Legos shift in philosophy so I no longer buy them. Since these high prices are heavily supported by nostalgia from the generations who played with them as kids back when they were affordable and prior to competing interests like computers (during the 80s) it will be interesting to see what happens when those generations die. I don't think the interest is there in current kids to justify current or future increases in prices. But I'll be long dead by then 😂

I am an absolute Lego Pirates fan and Barracuda Bay is my favorite set ever. But this set doesn't do it for me.
I understand the choices made but this is too much of a remake. I mean, big nostalgia and all, but Barracuda Bay, the castle and the Galaxy Explorer where full of clever techniques, new interesting pieces and a never seen before layout. This one doesn't offer much more compared to the original aside from the pretty cool modular option.
And biggest gripe of mine is a petty one but i dont like that the palmtree leaves are not the same as the ones used in Barracuda Bay. They looks so much better and this set is meant to be paired with the big Pirates set for many people, and the trees are ruining it. Yeah i get it, retro parts pack for Pirates lovers, but still

there are advantages to both.... a large base plate would cost less and let them build a larger castle part, (based on his build testimony there must be 80-100$ of base bricks here) A base should have cost like 20$ extra. but the brick built rocks are better for MOCing two of these together.

I'm just happy for the boat. Fun fact, the boat isn't actually an Imperial Navy Ship, rather, it's an Imperial Merchant Ship. Which is kinda odd, as the only other Merchant Ship from the pirates line is actually the vessel this ship was based one, that being the ship from Imperial Trading Post, set 6277. Why is it odd you may ask? Well, all this time we see pirates like Brickbeard, Metalbeard, Redbeard, Iron Hook, Jack Knife, etc., having stolen loot, and Imperials like Governer Broadside trying to retrieve it. But sadly, we usually never get to see just where the pirates got their loot from, and historically speaking, they most likely would've gotten it by raiding Merchant Ships like this one. So the fact that we've only seen two Merchant Ship as of 2023 for the Pirates line seems kinda odd, as there should logically be many more than that, but we simply don't see them. Darn shame. Oh well, I really enjoy this set, and will definitely be picking it up! Rockatoa, Brickticks out!

While building the rocks and base for this set probably isn't as fun or interesting, it does seem superior in every other way over a baseplate. I think the primary advantage of the baseplate is reducing cost of the set, which is particularly important for ones that are not targeted to 18+.

I haven't build this yet, but am heavily nostalgic for it. Pirates was always my theme growing up.
And yet, I do not love this set either. I think the old one looks better with a healthy mix of bricks and wall panels. You would think building elements from bricks is better, but it makes the fortress look so incredibly clutteree. This is especially visible in the cranetower where two corner elements would have made the whole thing look so much better. To my eyes there is such a thing as too much "detail".
Pair this with the modern instructionbooks and you have this weird building experience where you often don't see what you are building and suddenly it's done. I liked the old books where you turned the page and thought "ooh sweet, this is what we're doing next?"

Price per piece is not a good way of assessing the value of the set (esp. for sets with a ton of small parts); price for the overall VOLUME of stuff is much better so I would recommend using that going forward.

    • @TiagoCatarino
      @TiagoCatarino  Год назад

Ok. So I would dump every bag on a container (who needs numbered bags anyways) to get the volume of bricks and then assess the value? I've been hearing that argument a lot but it's flawed. The volume of the cloth sails is near zero for instance and I can assure you, their internal production cost prices are nowhere near zero...
Price per piece ratio goes out the window for sets like Dots or Art sets because 90% of the pieces are small round plates. Same with let's say Jurassic Park sets because the moulded dinosaurs are crazy expensive to produce.
For "normal" type LEGO sets there's usually a good balance of small parts vs big one that even things out on the PPP ratio. This set in particular, while having that good balance also has 8 minifigures, cloth elements (and I forgot the cannons which must also be expensive to produce) and a lot of big plates and regular bricks used for all of the landscaping. I would argue that the PPP is a great way to assess the brick value of this set.

@@TiagoCatarino as a consumer who pays for the set, the "volume of stuff" I get to play with matters greatly to me. Take the Trafalgar Square set as an example... this was an $80 set of 1,200 parts with "great" PPP of $0.07. But I felt cheated on in the end as I built a great looking but super miniscule model, as vast majority of those parts were tiny plates. Confronted with Hogwarts Clock Tower from the same year - slightly more expensive, 900 parts with PPP at $0.10 yet I feel I get much more of an actual set simply because the overall volume of stuff is so much bigger. Hence my previous argument.
Anyway, love your stuff, and your storage tutorial inspired me a great deal and for that I thank you. Two thumbs up, Tiago. Great job you are doing here!

Architecture sets are usually overpriced and like you said, pieces are tiny. That theme kinda fits the same boat of LEGO Art as far as PPP go.
Again, for “normal” themes PPP is a good measure of value in my eyes! Duplo, 4+, Technic, Mindstorms, Architecture and Jurassic would be themes that need a deeper look into pricing where the simple PPP ratio doesn’t really make sense.
Appreciate the conversation though, and the feedback about the other video! Enjoy :)

@@TiagoCatarino Tiago, appreciate your input. Perhaps worth considering _also_ commenting about "how much LEGO you get for your money" as an additional metric, aside from PPP which many still care about hearing, especially the above or below the magical 10c per piece cost. Cheers and all the best.

I feel like there were a lot of sacrifices made to a good design in order for the modular function to work. I was really excited when I heard that this remake was coming, but the execution of it is kind of disappointing. There are very few spots in the final build that I think are clever techniques or interesting visually (which is what I usually like in a model, but to each their own)

I want to see ship designer "MOC Your Bricks" get ahold of this set. I bought 2x Barracuda Bay after seeing his video. My main theme is Castle, but Pirates are preindustrial as well, so they fit in with my layout. You're right when you say this set is ready to be 2x or 3x size. I want to see a Pirate theme LUG get ahold of this!

I'm a Lego fan that's only interested in Lego pirate sets. Honestly, the thing that I disliked most about the old Eldorado is the baseplate. It makes the set look and feel cheap. I wouldn't display a set with a baseplate. But you're right that building the grey base can be tedious.
