  • Wuthering Waves has released in full, and I want to talk about. Amongst the discussions that will occur online, some of it has been in favor of the game's quality, and some... not so much. In this first impressions video, I'm going to break down the discourse surrounding the game, and give my own thoughts about my experiences and how I think the game will go from here on.

Funny how just the other day Mihoyo devs and employees were taking selfies with WuWa posters before it's release. Talent recognises talent. Kuro games and Mihoyo never showed themselves as rivals, it's the player base that just sets these arguements like little children fighting over whose toy car is better. Kuro and Mihoyo both have very talented devs and at this point I can only say that gacha games' communities cannot be saved; they're filled with too narrow minded individuals who think they are somehow superior to others for preferring one game over the other as if their lives depend on it. Why cant people just play the damn games? Arent we gamers first? Is it really THAT hard? Well I guess for some it is...

The problem is that I don't even notice the edm in the open world? It's not really acquired taste. Genshin's overworld ost enhances the experiment while the edm in the game it just feels there? Doesn't make the game feel magical or anything. Very very generic edm it definitely needs more style or something that it's going for.

11:22 Taste in music is a subjective, that's true. What WuWa missed is in its music direction as music feels uninspired. There are times that genre do matter as games with different stages, locations, and scenarios, variety and distinction is important. In case of WuWa, It's hard to get immersed in its open world if the music lacks identity and direction. You heard the term "generic music" and likely heard how one sounds like; it's uncaptivating and no part of it ever "sticks." What's make it worse is that some try to compare it to Genshin, and Genshin as you know it is over-the-top when it doesn't even have to. Kuro Games made PGR and its music is highly praised and yet WuWa never get that same treatment. Hopefully it's just a temporary thing.

  • @DreamyAileen
    @DreamyAileen 27 дней назад +148

11:57 Dude, sound is literally the central theme of Wuthering Waves's worldbuilding. If ever there's a game that _needs_ a phenomenal OST, it's Wuthering Waves. And WuWa just does not deliver. The OST isn't bad, but it's not special either. It lacks identity. It just sounds like sci-fi game music. Genshin's OST on the other hand sounds like *Genshin.*
Like, you hear a Genshin track, you just know it's Genshin. And that's in spite of the range of musical styles and moods present in Genshin's OST -- be it orchestral, traditional Chinese, traditional Japanese, EDM, rock, whatever the fuck Scaramouche's boss theme is -- they all sound like *Genshin.* And that's why Genshin's OST is *objectively* better than WuWa's OST.
And I say this as someone who personally prefers the predominantly techno/EDM/lofi style of WuWa's OST over the predominantly orchestral/traditional style of Genshin's OST.

    • @Hieulegen27
      @Hieulegen27 26 дней назад +36

This yea. Not saying Wuwa's OST is bad but it does severely lack an identity, it does not stand out and does not fit the mood. The EDM choice isn't bad but a lot of it is just normal dubstep with beats, there aren't significant or notable pieces that really stand out either.
Also people usually underplays the importance of OSTs a lot. It isn't simply to just sound good, it's also to alleviate the experience to another level by giving you some sort of emotion or vibe when playing. The greatest example has to be AK, a lot of its fights may not look as flashy or as intense as most gacha games but its OSTs alleviates the experiences to another level. Turning off its OST will make the gameplay severely less intense.
If you just want to see how normal/generic Wuwa's soundtrack is, try to play while turning off your music, it will barely be any different from having it on.

10:05 I see people often comparing the current state of Wuthering Waves to the initial release of Genshin Impact. While I do agree that it is fair to compare both games in their initial release states, I also think that its a useless comparison to make. At the end of the day, when Wuthering Waves competes with Genshin Impact, it competes against its current iteration, and not the initial release version. Of course Wuthering Waves is likely to get polished as it gets updated, likely receiving attaining a similar quality level to Genshin Impact. The difficulty is that Genshin is already out in a fairly polished state. Genshin has the advantage of being out for many years before Wuthering Waves, and as a result, has a level of polish and content that Wuthering Waves does not yet have. I can see how the comparison would be beneficial if it is being used to judge how Wuthering Waves might become more polished over time, but it isn't useful when trying to compare the quality of the two games.
TLDR: While its more fair to compare both games at their initial release, I think its not a useful comparison because Wuthering Waves, when competing with Genshin, competes against its current version and not its Initial release.

from my own experience wuwa was NOT ready to be released with its infinite glitches, there's some more subjective things like the fact that when the first location of the game is china it makes some problems, i don't have any problems with the region itself but it's rather the fact that the game should give a good first introduction: genshin gave us a basic medieval city with magic in fantasy setting - mondstadt, hsr literally begins in a space station, name a better location where you begin your journey in a science fiction world, and then we have wuwa with post apocalyptic china
thus so far i have tof flashbacks:
    - being hyped up as a genshin killer but turning out to just be an OK game that can't compete with hoyo (you say tof marketed itself as a competitor to genshin while wuwa didn't but other people under your video about tof already explained otherwise)
    - niche colour palette / open world design
    - relatively often appearing dry en voice acting
    - bugs which make your gameplay experience straight up horrible, they did fix _most_ of them but i don't understand why they didn't have a third cbt or at least had more time fixing the game BEFORE its release
and about the competition - wuwa is straight up not genshin's competitor, it has to do with their core gameplay and playerbase focus: as you said when mentioning dodging mechanics, they're targeted at more casual players who are not tryhards and usually will spend 5 minutes in a game a day at most, since it doesn't take long to spend all your daily in-game energy and do your dailies (kinda like hsr but it's a fundamentally different game though), and more importantly echoes gacha makes it easier to get what you need meaning it's very easy to get bored if you're spending a lot of time in the game, in other words - you don't have to delete genshin to play wuwa, meaning hoyo don't care

@@ars-br1ms That is very true, it is very niche. I guess the entire game is based on “music” or “rhythm” or “sound,” but I do agree that the entire starting location doesn’t exactly match that.
Plus, your thoughts on the strange themes of guns + magic is valid. In Genshin, magic is slightly more understandable because of its fantasy genre. However, in WuWa, however, magic is a little bit strange. If the “resonance mark” gives you magical powers, why would one need to use guns if they can obliterate enemies with magic? And what does a mark even do to make you stronger, does it make your gun shoot “stronger” bullets? A bullet is a bullet! Then again, you can argue that Genshin has the same problem with its bow, however, it just makes more sense because you are imbuing your arrows with a specific type of magic such as Pyro or Dendro.
Still though, I have high hopes for this game as it has more “meat” than the flayed fat that was the release of Genshin. It’s story is more complete, yet it could’ve been better if some pathetic kids from CN did not complain about how “the characters are so aggressive” and how they “can’t get immersed because they want their self insert to be greeted like a GOD!”

I mean genshin made like 60mill in its first week on mobile alone with CN+global and it kept going UP, and pretty significantly at that.
Im not saying 25m isnt a lot of money, of course it is and they made a lot more than that when factoring pc. But as i also said its a lot more expensive to upkeep a 3D open world game than a simple png or 2d turn based game. 25million for a 2d chibi turn based game like that means they are raking in huge gains, but 25mill for an open world you have to keep updating and making content for is not nearly the same amount of gains as its going to be taking a larger cut of that revenue to produce more stuff. Especially when there's a chance a lot of whales in one of the largest spending region in the world for gachas mostly back out of swiping due to the fiasco so the first week isn't representative of that situation.
Im not saying the game is dead or the servers are shutting down, but there are financial targets that can fail to be reached and it's not a good look for your revenue to be hyper inconsistent, like nikke for example which flip flops between 10m and 30m.

I’m about UL 38. The story was fine. Started off rough, but got better as it went on. The zone and character stories (not you lion boy) were surprisingly good. There are lots of areas for improvement overall.
The combat carries the game hard. Almost every issue I’ve had with the game has just been overshadowed by how much fun I have playing it. Even just getting into world map encounters feels good.
It’s clear they picked one area to focus on and let other aspects of the game take a bit of a back seat. I think that’s fine for a 1.0 release. They’ve showed that they can make the gameplay good. Now they just need to show the community they can also do the rest of it in updates.

I only play Star Rail so I watch these videos for fun but I got a whiplash when I got to the music part of the video. Now I havent heard WW's OST but I'm a musician and yes, music is an EXTREMELY important part of video gaming experiences, and one of the reason why Genshin is so highly acclaimed. Using the "subjectivity" argument is very very weak, because you can say that about pretty much anything. (See: Joseph Anderson's "Subjectivity Is Implied") People watch these videos to hear your takes and opinions, so you playing defense for the negative criticisms instead of airing your own positive opinion makes you seem like, I'm sorry to say it, a shill.

It's quite unfortunate how it became the norm to release buggy games, unoptimized or lacking features and players will be fine with that, waiting for fixes. Remember how we got games back in the day it was a complete experience? Yeah...😢
(For the record I understand why this happens, just irritated from devs being overworked and marketing pushing the release dates when the game is half cooked, and it being the norm. It would've been better if we got the game later and it would have good optimization, instead of them doing damage control after damage control)

You could use the argument that Kuro is a smaller company, however the current state of the game can instead deter players instead of trying to attract them before other games release (ZZZ). I think one of the aspects that really need to be a standard in games with verbose dialogues is having a summary shown when you're in the skip confirmation window. Arknights, Blue Archives and Snowbreak all have this and it makes you at the very least know what and why you're going to do X when you're back in the gameplay section. Players then can also immediately make the decision whether to read or watch the story later in RUclips or dedicated wiki pages once they're done with the story quest.

I consider myself rather competent with music, and imo wuthering waves ost is just there. It's not bad, it's not good, it's just there. It doesn't stand out in terms of any creative arrangements, it has quite simple and generic sound design, it's melodies and chord progressions are rather unrecognisable (maybe login theme is cool in that regard but still it's quite repetitive).
What I hate, is when people go around and start boasting how their game has the best music. It's really subjective and doesn't bring anything, other than unneeded arguing that wastes everyone's time. There is no way to convince me with logic to like rap, just like it is hard to convince a normal person to love artcore.
As for everything else, I hate when people compare 1.0 wuwa to 1.0 genshin. Genshin was there, publicly. Wuwa team had years. I mean, isn't it common knowledge that you should learn from other's mistakes, instead of repeating them?
TL;DR - stop forcing you music tastes on others. do not compare 1.0 wuwa to 1.0 genshin cuz we should learn from others mistakes, instead of repeatjng them.

3:45 That's not telling the full story. Each character has 10 Stamina, and there are 3 Towers. Two of them (let's call them Tower A and Tower B) have 4 floors. Floor 1 takes 1 Stamina, Floor 2 takes 2, and so on. The third one (let's call it Tower Z) has 2 floors that each take 5 Stamina.
The important things to note here are:
    1. You can swap weapons and Echoes between characters as they do not have Stamina, only the characters do.
    2. You can plan how to use the Stamina. For instance, you can use your 2nd strongest team against Tower A's 1st and 4th floors and Tower B's 1st and 4th floors. If levels are indicative of the floor's difficulty, then Floor 1 has Lv70 enemies, 2 has Lv75, 3 has Lv80, but 4 has Lv90 enemies, a larger jump. Hence you can use your 2nd strongest team against 2 of the hardest floors. Though you'd probably want to save your strongest team for Tower Z. However, say an enemy in Tower Z's 2nd floor resists your main DPS's element. Then you can use your strongest team for Tower Z, 1st floor, Tower A, 1st and 4th floors, and your 2nd strongest team for Tower Z, 2nd floor, Tower B, 1st and 4th floors.
Also btw 7:45 afaik the "Genshin Killer" is just misinformation. Meanwhile, the picture shown can be translated to Competing with Genshin, but 对标 (as per Google) is closer to "benchmarked", in other words it means something closer to "Comparable (in quality) to Genshin"; not necessarily "competing" in the sense of "I'm trying to be a better version of this game" but rather "Our playerbases overlap and I'm as good as that game" (I'm not well-versed in Chinese though, so idk, but I'm pretty sure there are many stronger phrases they could use if they do truly mean competing, which admittedly may just be to remain corporate)

11:00 Ok, I'll offer an argument against skip buttons then: Skip buttons are a shitty band-aid fix to a bullet-hole problem. If players want a skip button for dialogue, then that means the game has failed in some way, either in writing or in game design. Most gacha games, including Genshin and WuWa, suffer from both at once -- firstly, the dialogue is often needlessly wordy or bloated with non-essential filler; secondly, there's just too damn many non-gameplay dialogue scenes happening constantly.
Game writers and designers should aim to keep non-gameplay dialogue scenes infrequent and concise, packing as much characterization and relevant exposition into as small of a package as possible. In the meantime, non-essential dialogue, such as non-plot-relevant lore or banter, should be relegated to in-gameplay dialogue.
Take a look at God of War Ragnarok. That game has literal hours' worth of dialogue, but no first-time player thinks "I wish I had a skip button right now". Because non-gameplay dialogue scenes are fairly rare and reserved only for the most important character interactions; the rest of the dialogue occurs during gameplay. So you never feel like you're just waiting around. _That's_ how you do video game dialogue right.

My point is that a skip button is not a solution and shouldn't be praised as such. If MiHoYo and Kuro want to actually _fix_ the problem, they've got to make it so that the _average first-time player_ doesn't think about skipping cutscenes in the first place. Players like you -- those with second accounts, or those who don't want to see the story even once -- are not "average first-time players".

I've put maybe 60-70 hours in wuwa now, maxed exploration and data bank all that. I know a few friends that have performance issues due to hardware, but it wasnt a problem for me personally.
exploration still feels fulfilling, despite the increased movement potential, there is a chance that this is because chests feel a bit harder to find by the eye (but that could just be my eyesight declining). overall the launch of the game isn't as polished as it should be, but it's still a great experience, if you have the hardware to run it relatively smoothly of course. though currently, my main issue is definitely with progression and the availability of leveling materials. ESPECIALLY echo exp. it just feels very scarce, though it might still be a bit early to decide since most players are hovering level 20-30 and the amount of exp provided will increase with level.
I haven't payed too much attention to the story, but so far huanglong seems to be very focused on world building and helping players understand the new environment. i can definitely see it improving throughout the patches. I do have pretty high standards for plots in games but thats mainly due to what a couple of gachas have shown me in the last few years. currently the story of wuwa isnt the strongest, but i can see it becoming something that is very immersive and interesting.
PGR wasn't a game i played for too long, but with the way they handled player feedback there, im confident the game will see a lot of improvement over time, since right now, basically a new patch is being added every day. hope the devs are taking care of themselves the most if anything.

The game is also themed around music and sound design puns, so i feel like it makes sense. I think a lot of people are saying the OST is bad because it's edm which is more of an aquired taste. I mean, some of the soundtracks in genshin have electronic/edm elements too but wuwa is more heavily focused on an electric sound. The only issue i have with the soundtrack is that some of the songs feels more like it would be in a movie trailer than something you'd hear traveling an open world, but its more of a nitpick.

Final thoughts: I've hit level 30, beaten all story content and never had any performance issues outside of that no sound into a crash bug that happened 2x for me. So performance for me has been flawless. Combat is significantly better than ToF and obviously better than Genshin since well that's just combine elements simulator. Music is great for both games and as a musician for over 20yrs saying music is objectively bad or good is still moronic lol. Graphically I prefer Wuwa's art style but Genshin still looks great in it's own art style. ToF graphics were much lower quality. Wuwa's story isn't great at first but yeah towards the end I actually found myself paying attention and the final hour is an incredible experience. Genshin is obviously known for it's story like Star Rail and is very good. Comparing the open world and exploration of Wuwa and Genshin 1.0 and there's no comparison Wuwa wins easily. The map is bigger, there's actual interesting sub locations like huge mineshafts and underwaterfall caves and Wuwa rarely has more than a few inches of dead space in it's open world unlike Genshins 1.0 release. Genshin drones will talk so much shit about Wuwa and that's because they feel threatened by it's quality if they think back to how their own 1.0 was it's not even in the same league. Genshin now is a great game and Wuwa if given that much development time and the devs don't fuck it up will absolutely be the best open world gacha game. Only time will tell. One last thing that all these fanboys don't think about....competition is what breeds quality. If Genshin doesn't have competition the devs are free to do whatever they want with no threat of "I'm leaving to _____ game" this is how the games industry thrives. Embrace the competition so that both games can become their best versions.

I'm for sure going to play WuWa for a bit but idk if it's going to hold onto me.
I didn't really like the story. The world building felt hard to understand a lot of the terms come off as jargon. It feels like the Rover has no goals and I can't even tell what their role is, even when everyone is calling the Rover special.
The combat is for sure more complicated than genshin, WuWa characters just do more. Swap canceling or parrying is the hardest part.

I hope that wuwa success in the market, I am playing it and having a lot of fun, and if genshin's devs starts managing the game better (like changing the absurd amount of pulls for the weapon banner) it will be an win to win situation for the devs and players

I just hope that later on Kuro doesn't make the gacha in WuWa the same as in PGR.
For context, I tried PGR out early this year and was absolutely confused with PGR banners, there are two limited banner for the same character, that I couldn't figured out on my own which to pull and then you absolutely have to pull weapon banners for the best weapons because better weapons have higher level cap, and there's a Un banner and CUB banners that competing for my gacha currency.
It almost feels like there's 10 different banners running at the same time, I only sticked with it for a month.

It's a bit confusing at first, but I wish wuwa would be as generous as pgr. In pgr, if you log in daily and do weekly challenges, you can get every new 5 star guaranteed, no 50 50 bs.

the music is serviceable at best even compared to PGR which is also made by kuro games. i think music does elevate the experience of any game gacha or otherwise and i think that Wuthering Waves music is by far the weakest part about the game. there isnt a single track in the 30 hours of Wuthering Waves that ive played and listened to and went wow that sounds really nice, where as i listen to a bunch of track from PGR even when not playing the game.
overall i think saying that the music is subjective is only partly true and i think most people will agree that the music is very lacking in quality especially compared to games like PGR or Genshin impact.

The only other gacha i've played is Nikke so i dont really have anything to compare to but this game is really overwhelming for me. So many different currencies and plants and so many mechanics tied to your resonator and so many ways to level up different aspects of them i just dont know what to do when i play. I kill 1 enemy and get like 10 different item drops i have no clue what any of it is.

I' m a genshin player and I have been enjoying the game a lot. I'm one of the ones having problems with the optimization, but I can play it well enough to enjoy it and to wait for the fixes for my long term experience. I also buyed the monthly pass to support the game, competition does matter and we even got more resin and new endgame in genshin already. That said... Music IS desapointing, sorry. For a game with sound waves as a main theme, the music is just... There. You don't need to beba musicologist to feel when something is just not working and when this is the case. PGR has great music so kuro has the talent but this time they underdelivered.

So glad you made this video. I personally am not super interested in WuWa, but I heard there was drama about it for some reason. It's good that you included the "gameplay is king" quote and that only a small minority of people actually follow gaming news/drama. The majority doesn't care.
Also glad you shined a spotlight on the idea that competition is good. It's better for us, the consumer. Instead of hating on the game Genshin players should try it out. Considering I hear things about their game isn't that generous when it comes to getting free stuff. If they don't like it when they try it then that's fair. If they have no interest in playing WuWa at all that is also fair. Great video!

Hmmm... Combat mechanics dosent seem far off from PGR but in a sense its like a mix of that with Genshin
Also did they managed to somehow implement the matrix system? (Basically once you evade everything slows down temporarily, giving you an upperhand on attacks)

video 5 of asking psy to review guardian tales: i played wuwa literally the hour it came out and my first impressions were absolutely fantastic, the controls were responsive, combat was great, the game looked beautiful and this lasted for a grand total of like... 1 hour? maybe? the optimization was an ABSOLUTE MESS, i dont have that bad of a pc, its quite decent, but not being able to get even 30 fps at the LOWEST settings was atrocious. the voice quality was all over the place. some characters are voiced perfectly in my opinion (scar my beloved) and some were, just, not good man. yangyang was especially a great offender of this. it sounded like everytime she spoke it was asmr, which i HATED. i did hear ppl having issues with female rovers voicelines especially in the scar cutscene however i picked male rover and he did a pretty good job tbh. moving on from optimization and voice issues, trying to level echoes feels atrocious. you get so many echoes form just playing, but the resources required to level said echoes are very VERY scarce, youre gonna spend alot of time on just echoes, which i dont really think is a good thing. and the fact that the overworld bosses, weekly bosses, and echo fields all cost a whopping 60 waveplates also feels really bad, since you feel like youre barely making any progress every time you log in. i know this game has just released, and i know kuro games will eventually fix probably most of the issues that we have, but i do feel they shouldve taken a little more time in developing the game so that it was more finished on launch. i have high hopes for this game, the highs are really high but the lows are so many it kinda drags down the experience. great video psy!

For me, the main disappointment of this game is its combat system. It is so mainstream and mechanical I don't even have any desire to learn it. Comparing it to Genshin, where I had enough interest to actually research and experiment with the combat mechanics to understand how it works, in WuWa I don't even think there is any room for research. I may be wrong, no I actually pray to be wrong about it, but so far, I don't see it. And that's a real shame, because I really love the game's world and aesthetics, basically everything outside of combat experience. Grindy echo system? Low rewards? Pffft, no problem, as long as I enjoy the gameplay. But the thing is, I don't enjoy a huge part of it, which is the combat.

if you are wandering if the echo system is good or bad, it bad because you can't just feed other echo to level, you have no exp to level them. you can only "recover" exp from pieces you level.
kuro say they will address it.

I used to be a hardcore Genshin player, and picking up WuWa was literal music to my ears. Satisfying combat and open world traversal mechanics, dialogue skip button and a more immersive main story plot. Sure enough it takes a lot of "inspiration" from Genshin in many of its core gameplay, but a lot more polished. Like what you quoted, I don't care if it is supposed to be competitive to Genshin, I'm playing it because I'm enjoying it, more than Genshin as it turned out to be :)
